Sure, you could be plundering the Coldplay back catalogue, but you know whatever you're getting yourself into, it's not going to be easy listening. In the 12 months where fun got banned, nostalgia for packed dancefloors, lasers and big fish little fish dance moves has peaked; the sound of British hardcore being reproduced by kids who weren't even a glint in their parents' massively enlarged pupils, and hipster Instagram accounts ramping up the likes with crackly VHS footage. It's easy to forget, though, that there was huge prejudice at the time toward these raves and their music; and from the dance music community itself.

They say time heals, and for the hedonistic sound of hardcore, it's a nailed on truism; its sheer joy as infectious as it was back then, without any of the unnecessary and unpleasant elitist sneering that accompanied it. As disco in its spiritual home of New York's debauched nightclubs fell out of vogue, European producers inspired by the sound persisted with gusto; taking their scene to the mainstream with chart successes moulded in the manner of the Warhol Factory cookie cutter process. Once a dirty word, Italo Disco has won a devout new following, its catalogues plundered for synth-heavy camp classics with inimitable feeling. While the sound wouldn't resonate in the English speaking West at its peak during the 1980s, its influence can be felt in the distinctive electro-pop of Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode and New Order; today its new audience has made cult classics of one-hit-wonders from obscure artists and aliases.

The circle would be complete when Italo made its way into the nightclubs of New York and Chicago via American producers inspired by the high energy sound, the likes of Bobby O and Patrick Cowley evolving the scene as those in the UK had. For his latest deep dive, Øhm Sweet Øhm takes us on an uptempo ride through the individual sound of Italo Disco, the evocative scene that didn't know when it was beaten. Italians love synthesizers. And so do we.

From a Croydon record shop called Big Apple to sold-out arenas in the city that goes by the same name, in the mid part of the 2000s to early in the following decade, a scene was born, exploded and its cultured ashes pissed on from a great height by an ugly American wave known ominously as EDM. Digital Mystikz, Coki and Mala, Loefah, Kode 9 a young Skream and Benga and many more helped transform a dark offshoot of UK garage into a dub-inspired haven of crackling tension and claustrophobic bass that would thunder through sound systems and onto dark and dank dancefloors. Those familiar with the sound's post-2010 demise may struggle to comprehend the gravity of this movement on electronic music at large. For those few years, dubstep was London's new punk. A blistering, DIY bolt of energy that warped sounds, crossed genres, and made clubbing exciting again. Honouring the scene's true sound, DJ Simm takes us on a quick tour from the underground to the edge of crossover with a selection of dubstep classics that stay true to their roots from beginning to end.

Fresh Soup 096: Øhm Sweet Øhm presents Space Disconauts

First standing behind the decks in 1969 at a club in a small town near Rimini, a young Italian DJ would spend the 1970s honing both his craft and a unique slant on the disco music that was being pioneered across the Atlantic. By the 1980s, Daniele Baldelli's Cosmic Disco was ready to lift off, literally; his DJ booth at Cosmic, an influential nightclub by Lake Garda, designed to replicate the cockpit of a spaceship.

Informing a more esoteric brand of disco the world over, Baldelli's tendency to dig out unknown gems, to spin 45s at 33, incorporate instruments and live elements into his sets, had rubbed off onto a generation of space disconauts; a sound that has endured to this day through artists such as Lindstrøm and Prins Thomas. For his latest deep dive, Øhm Sweet Øhm takes us back to the 1970s and '80s via an ethereal realm of otherworldliness, a cosmic 60 minutes of dancefloor wooziness guaranteed to take you to places you could never have imagined. Get ready for lift off.

James Dewitt Yancey—better known as J Dilla, or Jay Dee—was a quiet genius taken to soon, dying of a cardiac arrest after a long illness with a rare blood disease. He had just turned 32. Described as "jazz's latest great innovator" and 'the Mozart of hip-hop', among other plaudits, and hailed by the biggest names in the scene, Yancey himself remained humble and shunned the spotlight.

With production credits for all from De La Soul to Erykah Badu, his solo work remained unheralded in his lifetime; posthumously he is now regarded as hip hop's greatest ever beat-maker. In a Fresh Soup special, DJ Simm pays homage to a modern musical magician.

Simm discovered electronic music at the age of 11, back in 1991. From there he followed the rave scene through hardcore to jungle and drum and bass. At 16 he got his first pair of decks and started collecting vinyl. Throughout the years he’s been involved in various genres, but drum and bass is always the sound closest to his heart.

This first mix for Fresh Soup is a selection of some of his favourite releases from 1996, the year he began DJ'ing. Tech step through to Jump Up and some of the more deeper cuts, DJ Simm provides a short journey through that seminal year.
