If These Eyes Could Talk

In this week's episode of "If You Knew Me," host Jamie Yuenger presents a captivating interview with Tonje Thoresen, a multi-talented woman whose life took unexpected turns.

The show is transitioning to an interview style, and this episode provides a glimpse into Tonje's extraordinary journey.

Tonje, originally from Norway, went on a global exploration in her early 20s. From studying art and fashion in Berlin to immersing herself in the fashion scene of Paris, she eventually launched her own ready-to-wear fashion line. Despite the boutique's closure, Tonje seamlessly transitioned to photography, capturing political debates, sporting events, and haute couture fashion shows.

However, in 2018, Tonje's world took a dark turn. Mysterious symptoms, including migraines, heart issues, and leg pains, plagued her. By 2020, an abrupt and life-altering event unfolded in her brain, leading to the permanent loss of her eyesight. The subsequent life-saving operation marked the beginning of a challenging journey, during which Tonje spent one and a half years learning to navigate life without vision

Sister Monica Clare, an Episcopal nun from Mendham, New Jersey, embraced her authentic self later in life and gained recognition from Oprah. With a TikTok following of nearly 180,000, she has inspired many. Claudette Powell's journey is pretty intriguing. Once married and working at Paramount Pictures, she felt drawn to the nun's life. In the episode "Nicey Nicey" we unravel Claudette's unusual path, combining her voice with intermittent narration.

Join us in this special episode of "If You Knew Me" as we reconnect with Kerry Jones, who bravely shared her story on the show a year ago. Kerry opens up about her life since her previous appearance and provides an update on her journey. In the original episode titled "Living with Lipedema," Kerry discussed her diagnosis of lipedema, a condition that causes abnormal fat buildup and can lead to pain and difficulties in daily activities. Although there is no cure for lipedema, Kerry explored various treatments, including plastic surgery.

Unlike our regular episodes, this series features a conversation format, allowing Kerry to share her experiences in her own words. Tune in as Kerry discusses the challenges she faced, the progress she has made, and her inspiring resilience throughout the journey.

I thought the whole problem was me

Beth grew up like all of us, thinking that what was happening in her home with her parents was normal. Her dad’s behavior seemed fine, because she didn’t know anything different. But as she grew old, she felt something was off. Her dad was cruel. He was hard to predict. Because, sometimes he was really nice, too. It took Beth a long time to unravel the story of her dad.

This episode is about how to deal with your own parent when they struggling and their struggle negatively affects you. It’s about what happens when a parent has a mental illness, but doesn’t seek support. Beth found her way. She decided to tell her story on the show in the hope that by sharing it, she might help a listener recognize her own experience.

Beth’s story is entitled “I thought the whole Problem was Me”

I Feel Like A Fraud

Libby is internet famous. Most of you who know Libby, know her by her Instagram and TikTok handle Diary of an Honest Mom. Libby has over a million followers on TikTok and half million on Instagram. She is also a mother, speaker, writer, and mental health advocate. She started her platforms in 2020 and uses them to shine a light on the hardships of motherhood, as well as the pleasures of it. She is transparent about her personal struggles and growth.

I have followed Libby and Diary of an Honest Mom for a year or so, and I’ve been impressed, like so many of you, by Libby’s candor, humor, and depth. There’s a reason she’s been so successful. Her willingness to be vulnerable is a big part of it.

In this episode, Libby courageously discusses her childhood and upbringing but also how it relates so intensely with her current feelings of being an imposter. Ironically, this woman who has built her reputation on being open, honest, REAL, is still contending with the issue of whether she’s honestly portraying herself, her abilities and her value. I kept losing my voice

Stephanie Sprenger is the co-host of the Mother Plus Podcast, a co-producer of the live storytelling event 'Listen to your mother', a writer, and a music therapist. Stephanie's story is about one of the biggest life questions that we all face: What should I actually be doing with my life? What is my work in this world and am I doing it? For many years, Stephanie had a decent job. She actually designed it herself. She liked it, sort of, but for years she felt the pull to change her career. Her only problem was that she didn't know how. And she didn't know what to do next.

This episode is entitled “I kept losing my voice”.

BONUS: The Shift

This is a special message about some shifts we are making with this show. For the last little while, we’ve been putting out one episode every week. It’s been amazing and also an amazing amount of work. Just lately, Piet and I have realized that we cannot keep up with the production schedule that we set out for ourselves. We are shifting. Instead of putting out a new story every week, we are going to put out a new story once a month. This is deep work, and it’s the type of work that requires patience and trust. We are going to give each woman’s story more time to develop, and we are going to give ourselves more time to create each episode. We trust that this will improve how we bring you stories and the kind of stories we bring you.

Our next episode will be published on April 1st, and we plan to publish all subsequent stories on or around the first of the month. We encourage you to sign up for our once-a-month newsletter. For two reasons, first we will announce the new episode release, and secondly, we will be sharing more in the newsletter that we won’t be sharing on the show itself. Organize with Love at the Center

Heather Booth began speaking out against injustice. In her early twenties, she founded an underground network called Jane. The network eventually helped over 11,000 women get safe, illegal abortions before it was made legal in the U.S. with Roe v. Wade.

Heather grew up Jewish and was raised by loving parents. Her mom and dad shared an important Hebrew idiom with her and her brothers: “Tikkun Olam,” which means, “heal the world.” And that’s indeed what she’s been doing her whole life.

In 1966, Heather led a sit-in against the war in Vietnam, becoming the first college campus in U.S. where the students took over an administration building. She co-founded the Chicago Women's Liberation Union.

Her husband Paul Booth was also an activist and her partner in justice.

Today she’s 78 years old and still giving talks, press conferences and showing up physically when the movement calls.

Unbeliever

What does breaking from the fundamentalist Christian church and forging your own identify and sense of sanctuary look like? Hannah Aldridge’s story paints a picture.

Hannah Aldridge’s music has been described as “dark country”. She grew up in a musical family. Her dad worked as a musician in Fame Studios, a recording studio in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, where some of the most well-known singers of our time cut records, including the Rolling Stones and Aretha Franklin. Hannah grew up running around in that studio. She also grew up in a family that was fundamentalist Christian. In her early twenties, she started playing music on stages close to home. After she broke from the church, she started playing on stages all around the world. Her songs strike a delicate balance between rebellion and self-discovery. This episode is the first story on our show where we will weave a woman’s story with her own, original music. You’ll hear snippets of Hannah’s music throughout. Hannah came-of-age in the South but she’s spent a lifetime trying to create an identity outside of it.

Hannah Aldridge’s forthcoming album ‘Dream of America’ will be released in early 2023.

Kidney Sisters

This week we have a story from a woman named Catriona Ni Aolain. Her friends and family call her Kate. Kate’s story, on the surface, looks like the story of a hero - a heroine. She does something incredibly generous. After learning that a woman in her neighborhood needs a kidney donation, Kate decides to donate her own kidney. She goes through with it, gets the operation, and gives away one of her kidneys. But it’s not so simple. The emotions that Kate ends up having aren’t what she expects them to be.
