Black hair - specifically, black women's hair - has been the subject of legislative control in America since the early 1700s to the present day. In this episode, we discuss this history of attempts to control black American's relationship with their hair over the centuries - a practice that is alive and well in contemporary America. The discussion covers a recent slew of natural hair discrimination cases; and laws either passed, or currently being presented in various state and city legislatures, to end discriminatory practices around black hair in the U.S.

Hosted on Acast.
In this episode, we chat recent discoveries that led to finding family members separated by slavery. We also chat about the power of reuniting family lines for kin who were split apart by slavery. One very recent DNA discovery reunited the lines of two Edgefield, SC-born sisters after a 163-year separation. Sisters Martha and Maria Brooks last saw one other in 1857, when Mariah was sold away from her enslaving Brooks relations and her enslaved Brooks family. Mariah was taken away to Mississippi while Martha remained in Edgefield, SC. Their descendants found each other via DNA 163 years after the sisters were separated. We also reference online resources that helped us in our discoveries...and dropped a few black history facts.

Hosted on Acast. All too often, contributions from professional & experienced genealogists are overlooked when it comes to conversations about American history.
In this episode, we chat with educator, historian, and author Kevin M. Levin about his book "Searching for Black Confederates: The Civil War's Most Persistent Myth".To be clear, the discussion wasn't about whether enslaved and free black men were part of the Confederate Army. They were. What is under discussion is the capacity in which they served and the distinction between body servants, camp slaves, and soldiers. We cover quite a bit of ground in this episode, including records, repositories, and archives you can access to research enslaved and free men who were part of the body of the Confederate Army.Join us live every Sunday at 4pm EST via:1. https://listenvision.com/wlvs-radio OR2. https://www.facebook.com/genealogyadventuresusa

Hosted on Acast.
Have you ever tried to join a Lineage or Heritage society just to be turned away because you didn't have enough documentation. This episode will focus on issues surrounding poorly documented ancestors and the need for more societies to accept and incorporate DNA research as part of the application process. It’s not just prestige that gets people interested in joining lineage societies. Some societies have genealogical libraries that are only open to members (or only open for free to members). The opportunity to network with other people who have similar ancestry is also a benefit. There is also a very strong possibility of you meeting a genetic relative in a lineage society (someone who is descended from the same person as you), which gives you the opportunity to exchange family information, and maybe even discover new family artifacts, documents, records, and photos that you never knew still existed.Other reasons for joining a lineage society include bringing awareness to the particular group or time in history that the society celebrates, participating in the society’s charitable endeavors (some engage in charity and public service, while some do not), getting that membership certificate for your wall, being able to contribute your own genealogy research to the society, the thrill of accomplishment when you are accepted as a member, and the opportunity to get out and socialize with people of similar interests to yours at meetings. Illustrating a far richer and diverse American history is also a benefit.Last, but by no means least, understanding a society's research requirements will introduce you to genealogical best practice when it comes to your research. We apologize for the technical glitches in this broadcast.Join us every Sunday at 4pm via https://www.facebook.com/genealogyadventuresusa

Hosted on Acast.
Female ancestors are notoriously difficult to find. Once they get married, and you don't know the family they married into, they disappear into the ether. Was the maiden name given or a marriage certificate her correct maiden name - or a married name from a previous marriage?Have you only searched under her full or formal first name? Or did you search using the popular nicknames/diminutive forms of the day (Mary/Molly, Sarah/Sally, etc?)Were you looking in the correct County during the time she lived (remember, State and County boundaries changed...and changed often!)?In this episode, we discuss - and give plenty of tips - on how to find those hard to find female ancestorsCatch us live every Sunday at 4pm EST via https://www.facebook.com/genealogyadventuresusa

Hosted on Acast.
We had another powerful & amazing show this Sunday. We had a great time chatting with Toni Carrier and Robin Foster about the new International African American Museum coming in 2020 in Charleston, South Carolina - and their department within the museum: the Family History Center, which is already up and running. We had a lot of questions about what will make the museum a unique and compelling place to visit. We also found out more about the records, resources, and educational activities the IAAM's Family History Center has, and its plans for the future. You can always catch our live show on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of every month at 4pm via https://www.facebook.com/genealogyadventuresusa/If you like our Facebook page, you'll receive a notification when were about to go live too!

Hosted on Acast.

GA Live S01 E09: Why Changing State & County Boundary Lines MatterIn this episide, co-hosts Brian Sheffey and Donya Williams - and special guest Loretta Bellamy - chat about how shifting state and county lines can affect your genealogy research. Not knowing how the boundaries of colonial territories, states, and counties radically shifted over time can seriously trip you up when it comes to researching your ancestry. As I'm writing this, I'm thinking about one of my ancestors who seemed to bounce between two states and three counties. Not a bit of it.
Genealogical research is filled with mysteries, conundrums, conflicting information, and dubious claims...which needs solving in some way shape or form to reach a resolution and the truth. Critical thinking is an essential tool/skill every serious genealogist and family historian ought to use in the course of his or her research. So what is critical thinking?Criticalthinking.org says that critical thinking is:“...that mode of thinking — about any subject, content, or problem — in which the thinker improves the quality of his or her thinking by skillfully analyzing, assessing, and reconstructing it [thinking about how you think]. Critical thinking is self-directed, self-disciplined, self-monitored, and self-corrective thinking. It entails effective communication and problem-solving abilities, as well as a commitment to overcome our native egocentrism [not making everything about us or our viewpoint] and sociocentrism [a tendency to assume the superiority or rightness of one's own social group]."A well-cultivated critical thinker:• Raises vital questions and problems, formulating them clearly and precisely;• Gathers and assesses relevant information, using abstract ideas to interpret it effectively;• Comes to well-reasoned conclusions and solutions, testing them against relevant criteria and standards;• Thinks openmindedly within alternative systems of thought, recognizing and assessing, as needs be, their assumptions, implications, and practical consequences; and• Communicates effectively with others in figuring out solutions to complex problemsJoin Donya and Brian as they chat about how critical thinking is embedded in their genealogical research...And the amazing successes they've had piecing lost branches of their family via this essential skill.See you on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of every month at 4 pm EST for Genealogy Adventures Live!Follow our Facebook page to catch our live broadcasts via https://www.facebook.com/genealogyadventuresusa

Hosted on Acast.
So you've taken a DNA test....and discovered you have cousins who don't look like you or pray like you. This shouldn't be seen as the end of the world. Nor should it feel like the worst thing to happen to you in the entirety of your life. It's an opportunity. When it comes to Americans, it's an opportunity to cross the rubicon and actually reach out to people you may not ordinarily speak to. As well as an opportunity to learn more about your family's journey and history. Here at Genealogy Adventures, we have tales about the good, the bad, and the ugly when it comes to first contact with folks who do not look like us.There are no etiquette guides for this tricky subject. Where's Ms. Manners when you need her 😉 However, in this episode, Brian Sheffey and Donya Papoose Williams will share their thoughts and advice...especially where the unexpected family connection comes via slavery.LINKS:Beyond Kin Project Facebook Page:https://www.facebook.com/beyondkinBeyond Kin Project Website:https://beyondkin.org

Hosted on Acast.
