This week we have two of the researchers, editors, coordinators and co authors of Tricontinental Research Institute’s, “Hyper-Imperialism: A Dangerous Decadent New Stage”, Gisela Cernadas and Mika Nhondo Erskog.

In episode 69 of Global Majority for Peace, economist and researcher, Gisela Cernadas and researcher and editor at Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research, Mika Nhondo Erskog join Ileana Chan to break down their landmark study "Hyperimperialism: A Dangerous, Decadent New Stage", and answer a critical question: why does the US spend nearly $2 trillion on its military yet continue to lose ground?

Gisela and Mika explain the shift from US productive hegemony to coercive dominance, how China's rise fundamentally changes global power, and why this moment can be described as "the imperialism of a drowning billionaire who firmly believes he ought to be in the yacht." They walk through the study's findings, from 750 to 900 US military bases worldwide to sanctions affecting a third of all countries, and offer a sober assessment of where the anti-imperialist movement stands today.

They also unpack the study's categorization of Global South and Global North, explain why hyperimperialism is a distinct stage from earlier theories of imperialism, and discuss the growing resistance in Africa's Sahel region, the shifting alliances of the Global South, and the central contradiction of our time: a declining US-led imperialism versus an emergent China-led socialism.

Gisela Cernadas is an Argentine economist, independent researcher and member of the No Cold War collective. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Political Economy at the National University of San Martin in Argentina.

Mika Nhondo Erskog is a researcher and editor at Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research and co-cordinator of the regional Pan-Africa office of Tricontinental. She is also part of Pan Africanism Today Secretariat, which coordinates the regional articulation of the International People's Assembly, and a coordinator of No Cold War, an international peace platform. She is based in Shanghai, currently pursuing her PhD in the School of International Relations and Public Affairs at Fudan University.

David traces his political awakening to his father's preventable death, which launched him into a confrontation with the Nigerian establishment and a career of full-contact investigative journalism. He details his explosive exposé of Nigeria's current president as a convicted U.S. drug dealer and CIA asset, the subsequent lawsuit against the CIA, FBI, and DEA, and how he was placed on a no-fly list after the 2020 Lekki massacre before fleeing into exile.

David Hundeyin is a Nigerian investigative journalist, author, and founder of West Africa Weekly and The Spearhead. His sophomore nonfiction book titled ‘Breaking Point’ won the 2025 ANA Prize for Nonfiction. Hundeyin currently lives under political asylum protection in Ghana where he is working on his third book.

Author and China scholar Jenny Clegg joins Ileana Chan on episode 66 of Global Majority for Peace to discuss her new book "Storming the Heavens: Peasants and Revolution in China, 1925-1949", and why China's revolutionary history matters more than ever. Jenny brings a lifetime of experience to this conversation, daughter of communist anti-imperialists, she studied Marxism with Rose Dugdale, visited China during the Cultural Revolution, worked in factories, organized on council estates, and eventually wrote the definitive Marxist account of China's agrarian transformation. She dismantles the two dominant Western myths about China's revolution: that the Communist Party imposed ideology on peasants who just wanted land, or that Mao was merely a populist. She shows how Marx's methods were adapted to Chinese conditions, and why that's precisely why the revolution succeeded in 1949.

Jenny explains why China's private entrepreneurs "can't organize as a class" and must follow the government's lead, because "they had a revolution and power was in the hands of the people." She unpacks the mass line as genuine democratic practice, contrasts it with the instability of Western electoralism, and draws lessons for today's movements in the imperial core.

Jenny Clegg is a China specialist, scholar of international political economy, and long‑time anti‑imperialist researcher whose work bridges Marxist theory, global development, and contemporary geopolitics. A former senior lecturer in Asia Pacific Studies, she has written extensively on China’s revolutionary history, agrarian transformation, and the evolution of the country’s socialist project from Mao to the present. Ricardo Vaz | What’s really happening in Venezuela

In episode 64 of Global Majority for Peace, Ileana Chan speaks with Ricardo Vaz, political analyst and editor at Venezuelanalysis @venanalysis about what is really happening in Venezuela two months after the January 3rd US attack and kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores. Reporting from Caracas, Ricardo describes the shock of the bombings, the power outages, and the confusion as Venezuelans tried to understand the situation in real time , all while Western media rushed to present the assault as a fait accompli, even implying a “regime change” that never occurred.

He explains how grassroots organisation and the continuity of state institutions allowed daily life to stabilise quickly, with Acting President Delcy Rodríguez stepping in under the constitutional clause for a temporary absence. Yet the trauma of a foreign power abducting a head of state, and the media’s willingness to normalise it, continues to shape the political atmosphere. Ricardo breaks down how the US strategy of shock, combined with a blitz of political and economic demands, has left the Venezuelan government with extremely limited room to manoeuvre. From Washington’s control over oil revenues to the rapid imposition of diplomatic conditions, he outlines the pressures Rodríguez must navigate while maintaining unity and preventing further destabilisation.

Addressing speculation about internal betrayal and military readiness, Ricardo notes that while the January 3rd attack exposed vulnerabilities, there is no credible evidence of a negotiated surrender. Instead, Venezuela’s leadership is attempting to stabilise the economy, preserve institutional cohesion, and regain autonomy under the shadow of continued US aggression.

Ricardo Vaz grew up in Mozambique. With very strong political leanings from an early age and a clear anti-imperialist outlook, he always felt a very strong affinity towards the Bolivarian Revolution and Chavismo, and has closely followed political developments in Venezuela. After living in different countries and continents, he moved to Venezuela in early 2019. Although his background is in theoretical physics, he gradually moved towards journalism and political analysis and joined the VA staff as a writer and editor in 2018. Some of his main interests are sanctions, popular power organizations and the corporate media coverage of Venezuela. He is also a member of grassroots collectives Tatuy Tv and Utopix.

Yann explores how China’s Global AI Governance Action Plan promotes cooperation, safety, and fairness, while the US’s AI strategy is rooted in dominance, militarization, and control.

Yann explains what AI actually is, systems designed to simulate human reasoning and pattern recognition, and what it is not: sentient, conscious, or capable of true understanding. He highlights the limitations of current AI models, including their dependence on data quality, lack of contextual awareness, and vulnerability to bias and overfitting. These limitations are often obscured by inflated promises and trillion-dollar hype cycles.

We also discuss how AI has become a central front in the US-led hybrid war against China, from semiconductor sanctions and military investments to surveillance giants like Palantir and Oracle. She traces the roots of CODEPINK’s anti-imperialist 'China Is Not Our Enemy' Campaign, launched six years ago by co-founder Jodie Evans, who recognized the early embers of war: the creation of an enemy through propaganda, media distortion, and military encirclement.

Megan explains how China’s rise as a sovereign socialist project threatens US global dominance, not because of aggression, but because it offers a successful alternative to capitalist imperialism. From Taiwan war games to record-breaking military budgets, the US has built a material and ideological infrastructure for conflict, while conditioning the public to view war as inevitable.

She also exposes the role of think tanks, psychological warfare, and media narratives in priming public opinion, echoing the same tactics used before the Iraq War. Megan warns that this buildup increases the risk of miscalculation and escalation, especially in a region already saturated with U.S. bases, alliances, and weapons systems.

Ahmed Kaballo | Africa Stream Challenged Power, Amplified Africa. Empire Shut It Down.

Ahmed Kaballo, founder of African Stream, joins Ileana Chan for episode 49 of the Global Majority for Peace podcast.

In this episode, Ahmed shares the journey of African Stream, a media platform launched in September 2022 to define the African story in the African voice, with an emphasis on “Africa on the rise.” Built by a small team of full-time African journalists, the platform prioritized accessible language and anti-imperialist analysis, quickly gaining traction across TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. But after its critiques of US politicians and foregn policy reached greater virality , African Stream was accused of ties to Russian state media. By late 2024, it was banned from Meta, YouTube, and TikTok, and officially shut down in July 2025. Ahmed reflects on the emotional toll of this deplatforming and the lessons learned from building, and losing, a revolutionary media outlet.

Ahmed also discusses the rise of Pan-Africanist leaders like Ibrahim Traoré, whose grassroots-led revolution in Burkina Faso has inspired a regional shift. From rejecting the CFA franc to building citizen-owned factories and tripling basic infrastructure, Traoré’s leadership, alongside Mali and Niger, has formed the Alliance of Sahel States, pushing for unified military and foreign policy. Even imperialist actors now mimic Pan-African rhetoric, a testament to its growing influence. Ahmed emphasizes that Africa’s future lies in regional cooperation, infrastructure development, and sovereignty rooted in the will of the people.

Opening Rally | The Socialist China Conference 2025

The Socialist China Conference 2025 was organised by Friends of Socialist China with media partner Empire Watch.

Radhika Desai kicked off the opening rally of the Socialist China Conference 2025 with a powerful address on the unraveling of Western neoliberal dominance and the ascendance of socialist and anti-imperialist movements reshaping global governance. From China’s leadership in climate action and trade reform to the collapse of postwar imperial structures, Radhika delivers a sweeping analysis of a world in transition, one where the Global South is increasingly taking the lead in forging a more just and multipolar future.

The opening rally was addressed by a number of senior diplomats based in London: Jiang Zhouteng, Minister Counsellor at the Embassy of the People's Republic of China; Pablo Arturo Ginarte Sampedro, First Secretary of the Embassy of the Republic of Cuba; Timofey Kunitskiy, Counsellor of the Embassy of the Russian Federation; Wilfredo Hernández Maya, Counsellor of the Embassy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela; and Thavone Singharaj, Counsellor and Deputy Head of Mission, of the Embassy of the Lao People's Democratic Republic. Each of them brought greetings from their respective governments and expressed solidarity with Socialist China and with our conference. A video of greetings from Zhang Weiwei - Professor of international relations at Fudan University - was also shown.

Jacqueline Walker, British and American political activist, educator, and author joins Ileana Chan for episode 48 of the Global Majority for Peace podcast.

In this episode, Jackie delivers a searing analysis of the psychological and political toll of empire, arguing that true liberation requires a "decolonization of the mind." She frames the implosion of the UK's new left party as a symptom of a movement unable to break from the imperial core it inhabits. Jackie, a veteran anti-racist activist expelled from the Labour Party over weaponized allegations of antisemitism, masterfully connects the dots from the genocide in Gaza to the daily gaslighting that sustains the imperial system. She exposes Zionism as the "ethical mask" for modern imperialism, a mechanism that provides ideological cover for genocide abroad while being used to silence dissent domestically.

Drawing from her memoir, Pilgrim State, she presents a radical reframing of mental health, arguing that her mother's schizophrenia was not an individual medical failure but a direct consequence of state violence and colonial oppression. She makes the compelling case that the mental health crisis, particularly within the diaspora, is a scar of imperial gaslighting and a rational response to an insane system.

We also unpack the reality that opposing individual atrocities like the genocide in Gaza is insufficient without opposing the entire imperial system responsible for it. Jackie also breaks down the effective strategies from her anti-racist training, demonstrating that awakening people to these realities is not only possible but can be achieved with remarkable speed through empathy and narrative.

Tan Wah Piow | Singapore was never a fishing village

Tan Wah Piow, Singaporean political exile and human rights lawyer, joins Ileana Chan for episode 47 of the Global Majority for Peace podcast.

In this episode, Wah Piow dismantles the myth of Singapore as a previous “fishing village” and critiques the legacy of Lee Kuan Yew as the architect of a corporate state aligned with US imperial interests. He recounts his political awakening in the 1970s, his imprisonment and his exile to the UK. He also unpacks 1987's “Operation Spectrum” where he was named the alleged mastermind of a Marxist conspiracy to overthrow the Singaporean goverment. Wah Piow analyzes how Cold War anti-communist rhetoric was used to suppress dissent and consolidate power, framing Singapore’s rise not through sovereign development but through strategic dependence on US capital, military infrastructure, and ideological cover.

He examines Singapore’s pro-Israel positioning, contrasting elite alignment with growing public support for Palestine among the Malay Muslim community and younger generations. Wah Piow critiques the flawed analogy often invoked by Lee Kuan Yew, that Singapore, like Israel, is a small state surrounded by hostile Muslims, and outlines how this narrative distorts regional relationships and legitimizes militarized postures. As global condemnation of Israeli actions intensifies, including the UN Commission of Inquiry’s findings on genocide, Wah Piow reflects on the strategic risks of replicating Israel’s defense doctrine and the deeper implications for Singapore’s long-term security in a shifting multipolar world.

Wah Piow also reflects on his recent article, “Why AI Debates Ignore the World’s 800 Million Poorest People,” and critiques the narrow framing of human rights in global AI governance discourse. Drawing on a conference in Bangkok, he notes that while privacy and surveillance dominated the agenda, economic rights were entirely absent. He revisits the post-WWII split between “negative rights” promoted by the West and the economic rights sidelined by US influence, arguing that this legacy continues to shape legal frameworks today. As AI accelerates job displacement, especially among informal and precarious workers, Wah Piow warns that without a rights-based framework that includes food, shelter, and livelihood, the poorest will remain invisible in elite debates about technological governance.

An Interview with Palestine Action Co-Founder, Huda Ammori

Effective from July 5, 2025 Palestine Action has been proscribed as a terrorist organization in the UK, making it illegal to support or be a member of the group. Since then there have been over 700 arrests related to demonstrations and public support including 60 individuals currently being prosecuted. Huda Ammori, co-founder of Palestine Action, has been granted permission by the High Court to challenge the Home Secretary’s decision to proscribe the group under anti-terrorism legislation. The full judicial review is scheduled for November 2025, expected to span three days.

This week while Global Majority for Peace is on hiatus, we revisit an interview that Ileana conducted over two years ago with Huda Ammori, co-founder of Palestine Action, before October 7th, 2023.

Ammar Ali Jan | IMF vs BRI: Exposing the Real Cost of Development in Pakistan

Ammar Ali Jan, Pakistani political activist, academic, and a founder of the People’s Rights Party (Haqooq-e-Khalq Party, HKP), joins Ileana Chan for episode 44 of the Global Majority for Peace podcast.

In this episode, Ammar dissects Pakistan’s crisis of sovereignty under IMF austerity and the contrasting promise of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). He reveals how almost half of Pakistan’s national budget is funneled into servicing IMF debt while creating a system that enriches elites in exhange for gutting healthcare, education, and energy subsidies. While the BRI offers a “no-strings” alternative to Western financial coercion, Ammar warns that Pakistan’s rentier elites have sabotaged its potential, turning infrastructure projects like CPEC into speculative land grabs rather than engines of industrial growth.

He also unpacks Pakistan’s shifting geopolitical position, from the May 2025 Kashmir conflict, where Chinese J-10 jets outperformed India’s Western-made fleet, to the ouster of Imran Khan, widely seen as orchestrated by US-aligned military factions. Ammar critiques the illusion of non-alignment and exposes how IMF leverage is used to punish dissent and enforce compliance. He argues that true sovereignty cannot be achieved through elite diplomacy or foreign partnerships alone, it demands a class struggle against rentier capitalism, military domination, and imperial finance.

Ammar outlines the HKP’s socialist vision: nationalizing key industries, canceling odious debt, rejecting proxy wars, and building solidarity with regional anti-imperialist forces like China, Iran, and Russia. He calls for a mass movement rooted in student and labor organizing to rebuild Pakistan’s left from below. As the US empire declines and multipolarity emerges, Ammar warns that countries like Pakistan must resist becoming battlegrounds in the US led new Cold War. The path forward lies in claiming socialist control over development, sovereignty, and peace.

As US coercion escalates, from tariffs to blockades, Latin America responds not with retreat, but recalibration.

Dr Francisco Dominguez, former head of the Research Group on Latin America at Middlesex University. He is National Secretary of the Venezuela Solidarity Campaign in the UK, and also a member of the Executive Committees of the Nicaragua Solidarity Campaign AG and the Cuba Solidarity Campaign in the UK. Dominguez came to Britain in 1979 as a political refuge from Chile's Pinochet. Ever since he has been active on Latin American issues, about which he has written and published extensively, including on the opposition to neoliberalism and on the relations between China and Latin America. He is co-author of Right-wing politics in the New Latin America (Zed Books).

In this episode we discuss the disastrous impact that the US’s intervention into the Philippines is having on the country and how this is threatening to destabilize the wider Asia-Pacific region.

Since the election of President Ferdinand “BongBong” Marcos Jr in 2022, the Philippines’ foreign policy has shifted away from a neutral, balanced position towards a pro-Washington stance and is seeking to make an enemy out of China. This has seen the US military bases establish four new military bases on Philippines’ territory, which has come alongside an increasingly militarized and anti-China posture from Manila.

Anna shares her assessment of this dangerous foreign policy trajectory and how it is fuelling domestic political instability within the Philippines. With the Philippines’ rich and vibrant history of people-powered movements we also look at what the prospects are for a change in the country’s direction towards a more independent, sovereign and socially progressive path.

Anna also discusses her experiences of living and studying in China where she sheds some light on how misunderstood China is in the West.

Can we stop the US triggering World War III? with US Presidential Candidate Jill Stein.

Jill Stein, US Presidential candidate for the Green Party, joins Fiona Edwards and Ileana Chan for Episode 11 of the Global Majority For Peace podcast. In this episode, Jill Stein sets out her vision for a new US foreign policy based on international law, diplomacy and human rights – a clear alternative to the current bipartisan consensus between Kamala Harris of the Democratic Party and Donald Trump of the Republican Party which favours endless wars of aggression to sustain US global hegemony.

If Jill wins the election on 5th November 2024 she tells us that her first priority would be to pick up the phone and call Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and tell him “his genocide is over.”

She outlines how her agenda of “People, Planet, Peace” would require major cuts to the US’s military budget in order to release hundreds of billions of dollars to fund a Green New Deal and invest in housing, healthcare and infrastructure.

Jill makes the case that instead of “making an enemy out of China” with its New Cold War agenda, the US should be focusing on rebuilding its own economy so that it can engage in peaceful competition and cooperation internationally.

As the US administration intensifies its war drive on two major fronts internationally – in the NATO proxy war against Russia in Ukraine and in the expansion of the US sponsored Israeli aggression in the Middle East – Jill argues that the world has never been closer to a Third World War.

Victor Gao, the Vice President of the Beijing-based Center for China and Globalisation and former translator for Deng Xiaoping, joins Fiona Edwards and Ileana Chan for Episode 10 of the Global Majority For Peace podcast.

In this episode we discuss the Unites States’ increasingly belligerent policy towards China and how China’s foreign policy differs from the US’s imperialist approach. Victor explains his theory of the “inevitability of peace” between the US and China, arguing that as a nuclear war between the US and China cannot and will not happen as it would be apocalyptic for all humanity.

Victor also shares his reflections on the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China (1 October 1949) and the significant strides forward that China has made since then. He debunks the enduring myth of China’s imminent collapse.

Claudia De La Cruz, a US Presidential candidate for the Party For Socialism and Liberation, joins Fiona Edwards and Ileana Chan for Episode 9 of the Global Majority For Peace podcast.

In this episode we delve into Claudia’s socialist and anti-imperialist platform. Her campaign proposes that the US’s military budget is cut by 90% and for these funds to be redirected into life-affirming programs such as the provision of decent healthcare, education and housing as well as properly investing in the infrastructure and green technology that the US desperately needs.

Claudia explains that the US’s global war drive, from the NATO-proxy war in Ukraine against Russia to the US-Israeli genocide in Gaza, is about expanding US hegemony. She calls for an end to the new Cold War on China and for a policy of global cooperation instead.

We also discuss whether the US is heading towards fascism and why an anti-imperialist feminist movement is needed now more than ever.
