Trad Wife Delusion

2016 Presidential Election, Part 1

Lots of changes happened in the last week. I’ll explain them in the episode. The bulk of the episode is a “throwback”. Sort of. I originally recorded this episode back in 2021 and discussed what happened in the 2016 election. Part one will focus on what actually happened in the run-up to the election. A little over a decade, the media forgets that there was a prelude to the MAGA movement: the Tea Party. What has been portrayed as a “grassroots movement” by the lazy media, it was anything but. Started by corporations to obstruct any legislation that would be counter to a Libertarian – pro business culture. Many of the prominent conservatives were elected through the Tea Party movement: Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Rand Paul, and Trey Gowdy.

Modern GOP: The Clinton Years

In 1992, President George HW Bush was denied a second term as president. It was mostly blamed on a charismatic billionaire that called himself a ‘maverick”. That billionaire was Ross Perot. Many rank and file Republicans turned on Bush due to his failure to keep his one campaign promise: “no new taxes.”

This drove voter turnout against the incumbent and elected a southern Democrat, former Arkansas governor, Bill Clinton. Due to their own propensity for fucking up, this gave the Republican controlled House and Senate enough information to exact revenge.

While it may have cost Clinton a lot of problems, it turned out badly for the Republicans in the end.

Modern GOP: Rise of Newt

As we reach the halfway point of our series, we examine the “do nothing Congress” obstructionism that was made famous by Harry Truman. As we have seen currently, Congress’ inability to simply elect a Speaker of the House, House members not passing one piece of legislation, pushing for time on cable news, as well as doing weekly podcasts about their plight for the American people. Even though they vote against every single bill that is designed to help their constituents.

This wasn’t something new to the members of this Congress. The obstructionism ethos of radical Republican members started thirty years ago. It was started by a twice failed congressional candidate and professor. He realized that aisle crossing and compromise was killing their party. So getting bomb throwers into government was better.

Most importantly, it would make him famous and give him power.

Modern GOP: Building Blocks

We continue with our exploration into the modern GOP. Before Fox News and Newsmax dominated conservative opinions, there was talk radio. It’s where people like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and Glen Beck got their start. Even Alex Jones started as a radio show.

In order for conservatives to achieve their desire to be able to spout off conservative talking points without being held to a standard of being challenged, they needed to change the rules. The “Fairness Doctrine” required anyone being attacked allowed equal time to defend themselves. Their man in power Ronald Reagan agreed with that position.

With all the actions Reagan took during his time in office, the removal of the “Fairness Doctrine” has impacts that we are still feeling today.

Modern GOP: The Founding

How We Got Here (Teaser)

Before the series kicks off on January 8, 2024, we wanted to give you a slight sample of what is to come with out first season. The first few episodes will examine how the craziness of the Republican Party shouldn't have come as a surprise to anyone. They have been telegraphing it since the 1960s with their presidential nominee, Barry Goldwater. All the pieces in the first few episodes will explain something modern media can't: the history behind it. Donald trump and MAGA wasn't an abstract idea, it has been coming for sixty years.
