It is absolutely no secret to anyone that listens to this show that we love a good Role Playing Game. Whether it be Austin’s gushing over Pokemon, my continued support of Final Fantasy, or even Dylan’s consistent love of The Witcher, it’s very clear that we care a lot about the genre. But one thing we have yet to do is dive deep into why that is. Why do we love the genre? What makes it so special? What even makes a good RPG a good RPG? Well, strap in folks because that’s what we plan to discuss for you today.

On top of the RPG talk, Josh has a couple of great games to talk about, Austin continues his long descent into the land of Gundam, and Dylan ponders the meaning of life and more.

Videogames are an ever-evolving medium and we’re constantly finding new ways to play. Whether it be new streaming techs like Amazon Luna and Google Stadia or Virtual Reality coming from the likes of Valve’s HTC headsets or Sony’s Playstation VR. On top of that, there are constant innovations in tech that bring the scope of what video games can do into a massive new world. At the forefront of these conversations in recent years has been Microsoft’s Xbox brand. With the Xbox One X being a powerhouse at the time of Launch, the Series X being the most powerful console ever created, and the adaptive controller giving disabled people the ability to play games, Microsoft has been pushing tech into new frontiers. Even with all of that said, possibly Microsoft’s biggest innovation has been Game Pass, its Netflix-style gaming library. The subscription service has taken the world by storm, amassing a gigantic subscriber base in just a handful of years, and the recent acquisitions such as Outriders and MLB The Show, it is only getting bigger. With it becoming a hugely popular service, Game Pass is making leaps towards changing the video game industry forever and that’s what we plan to talk about for you today.

Special Ep. 03: Nintendon't

One thing is probably clear to anyone who listens to our podcast, Austin is the Nintendo guy. Josh loves his switch to death and is very nostalgic for the NES and SNES era of Nintendo, but he is not as ingratiated into that community as really either Austin or Dylan is. That doesn’t mean that he doesn’t pay attention and as such, he has some thoughts about where Nintendo is sitting currently in comparison to the other two giants of the industry, Xbox and Playstation. That said, to keep him in line and to get a more unbiased look at the company and how it is currently sitting, he brought in Austin and Barry Carenza of NintendoFuse in order to really get into the weeds on where Nintendo currently stands and what may be on the horizon.

Music is as integral to gaming as it is to any other form of visual media out there. Without music, you couldn’t have the same feeling of intensity in the boss battles of The Witcher 3. Nor could you have the feeling of adrenaline pumping vigorously through your veins as when the chase music hits in Metal Gear Solid. On the opposite end of the spectrum, you couldn’t have the same feeling of immense sadness as you would when Sniper Wolf tells her life’s story at the end of her boss fight or the death of Aerith is Final Fantasy 7. And as Austin said in his intro on the special episode, it’s a little bit sad that music is often overlooked in favor of narrative or gameplay and so today, we’re going to talk about our favorite video game soundtracks.

Video games are such a wonderful medium for storytelling. They combine tons of variations on different mediums. They can entice with their visual splendor. They can evoke emotions through incredible narratives. They can even give you the tactile feeling of overcoming an obstacle. There is one part of gaming, however, that is often overlooked and that is the music. While it needs to be stated, that isn't true in every single instance, when you go to tell someone about a video game, music will not usually be the first or second thing that you talk about. So today, Austin and special guest Johnny McLain, of the Atlanta metalcore group Ghosts Of Evergreen, talk about music in gaming. What can music do for a game and even some of their picks for favorite game soundtracks ever.

Video Game Preservation is a topic that at one point became a big issue of discussion for most gamers. In the lead up to the more modern age of gaming old games made for old hardware were often lost if the rights holders didn't make sure to preserve them. This led to many games being lost to time forever. In the dawning of the new digital age of gaming, that question persists with perhaps an even renewed vigor. What happens to our games if it's just a digital copy? The recent rumor of Sony shuttering the digital stores for the PS3, PSP, and PS Vita has only gone on to spark even more discussion about the preservation of games.

Alongside that topic of the show, Josh got his hands on a PS5 and has some thoughts on the system as well as a few games that he's been playing on there. Austin rewatched FLCL for the first time since high school and has some thoughts on it and Dylan... Well, he's still Dylan. All of that and more on a jam-packed episode of Hunting Pixels.

Have you ever had an experience so impactful that you’ve never forgotten? Some people will remember their first kiss with the most vivid clarity that it’s like they’re reading from a book. Others may remember a really awful break up. These experiences strike right to our core and we remember them forever. Media can also do that. Many of us can recount the very first time that we saw our favorite movie of all time. Some will remember the concert that was “like a religious experience”. And for some of us, that moment comes from video games. So strap in guys, it’s time for us to get back to our buzzfeed listicle roots and we’re going to talk to you today about the moments in gaming that have stuck with us, not only to this day, but may stick with us forever.

Dogs Barkin' And Bitches Squakin'

They did it. They finally did it. The good ole peoples at Gamefreak and Nintendo gave us our first Pokemon Direct since January of last year and our first direct with information on mainline entry games since February of 2019 when Pokemon Sword and Shield were first announced and they blew the event out with some pretty big announcements. The direct was a gigantic boon for some long-time fans of the series and was a slight disappointment for others. With that all said, there was no denying that this was a much bigger and better showing for Switch fans than the Nintendo Direct of just two weeks ago and we have some thoughts about it.

In addition to this Josh has watched some television and has some thoughts about that. Dylan has turned from getting hit in Spyro 3 to getting hurt in Hollow Knight. Austin has weirdly no anime to talk about! All of that and more.

As many, if not all, of the listeners, are aware, I try my best to keep our show as politics-free as I possibly can. The main reason for this is that I genuinely believe in bringing as many people together as I can because I think the world is a better place when we can all come together to converse and share our individual experiences and passions together. That said, there has been a news story percolating within the last couple of weeks that has gotten me thinking. The news story in question was the recent announcement of the reemergence of the once canceled game, Six Days In Fallujah. The game was originally mired in controversy in 2009 and subsequently lost its publishing deal with Konami and was canceled soon after. Its reemergence has only caused more controversy. The entire news story surrounding this game has led me to think more about what we expect from our games and their politics as well as what we are willing to accept and what we are willing to censor.

To do that, I have brought in my two guest hosts, the Sword Chomp Elite, Shea Layton and Rich Meister, to talk about just this subject for you today. We dive deep on our thoughts on Six Days In Fallujah. We consider what politics in gaming even means and whether or not gaming needs them. And of course we talk a little bit about censorship and that entire quagmire. All of that and more on this very special edition of Hunting Pixels.

Difficulty in games is a topic that has been discussed pretty much ad nauseum for a good long while at this point. We can look back to the days of NES Classics such as Megaman and Castlevania for their punishing difficulty, or we can take a look at more modern games such as the From Software IP/Souls series of games. But what happens when that just isn’t enough? What if you want more? Certain games will offer this in the form of higher difficulty offerings and others add it as gameplay modifiers, but sometimes even that just isn’t good enough? Insert the challenge community of gamers. This group sets out to challenge themselves in a number of ways whether it be setting a new world record for beating the game in the fastest time or by beating the game without taking any hits from enemies. The challenge running community has become a mainstay in modern gaming and we would like to discuss them and all their great efforts here for you today!

Innovation. It’s a term that’s tossed around an awful lot and despite it having a tangible definition, it is often far more nebulous in conversation. What do we actually mean when we say innovation, and even having said that, what are the parameters that we place upon that definition. Is The Last Of Us Part 2 the most innovative game of all time because it’s minute attention to detail with every single animation being painstakingly detailed? Or is Hades and innovative masterpiece because of all the tweaks it made to a genre thus spinning it on it’s head? What about Final Fantasy IV that invented an entirely new way of enhancing turn based RPGs? Innovation is something that is rarely ever discussed in any detail, but it’s exactly what we plan to do for you today, so strap in and let’s get ready for some philosophical rambling!

Zero Preparation

We had several topics ideas that we were tossing around this week, some of which I think we’ll get to in the near future, but one kept sticking in my head. Dylan has asked me repeatedly what my sort of “gimmick” will be for twitch and I think I’ve figured it out. That will be PS1 games. That has gotten me in the headspace of retro games and when Austin came forth with the topic of this particular show, well, how could I not resist. So what pray-tell is the subject of conversation this week? Well, we’ve decided to come together and talk to you about games that we love that we believe need remakes/remasters/rereleases.

Also in this episode, we talk about Wonder Woman 1984, Wandavision, and Locke And Key (Guess who's talking about all of these). Also Dylan is now a Twitch Affiliate and he gets to talk about how awesome that is. Austin has some thoughts on more Gundam properties. Blood Sucking Demons

We’ve done a look back at our takes on the best games of 2020. We’ve done a look forward at the games we’re most anticipating. We also made a big predictions for this year. The last thing that we now need to do is take a look back at the last generation and that, kind listeners, is what we plan to do for you today. We aren’t going to rank these or argue or anything like that. No, instead, we just plan to celebrate what made the last generation great. We do have to set some ground rules first however. We decided that in order to be eligible for this list the games in question had to have been released between November 13th of 2013 and November 22nd of 2020. That’s it. What games do we pick? Well, we'll get to that.

Also in the episode, We’ve got some thoughts on Wandavision and Game Of Thrones. On top of that, Josh has dived head first into his first Civilization game since CIV Revolution on the 360, Austin played an unhealthy amount of persona, and Dylan gets to talk about finally completing his challenge run. Hunting Pixels' GOTY 2020 - The Golden Pixel Awards Part Tres!

So We are here! It has come to this. Hunting Pixels is ready to get to you, the listener, our Game Of The Year! That said, We need to go ahead and explain our system and the ground rules. First, we’re using the system that was completely ripped off from Giant Bomb and Let’s Fight A Boss and we will be listing the games that we’ve played and then cutting them one by one until we get to our ultimate winner, the Hunting Pixels Game Of The Fucking Year!!! Now, to qualify for our list, the game had to have been released in a 1.0 release state after December 15th 2019 and before December 16th of this year. So games such as Hades are completely acceptable for this list, but games such as Telling Lies is not. Other than that, any game was fair play. The Fights are many and furious and there's a couple of shocking moments that you don't want to miss!!!

The Golden Pixel Awards 2020 Edition Part Deaux (Also Dick Jokes)

This week’s episode will be all about next year. That’s right, we’re already looking forward to next year. This will be our annual tradition going forward. The basic premise is that we’re doing a predictions show which we will tally up every year and the winner will be the king/queen of the podcast for the year. Each Person has come up with 3 personal predictions that we will all either say yes or no to and then tally those points when this episode arrives again next year. There will be one ultimate prediction worth 3 points to those who get it right but minus 5 if they get it wrong. It's quite the shit show as you've come to expect!

The Golden Pixel Awards - 2020 Edition - Part 1!

Every year, it gets this time of year and everyone starts putting out their game of the year nominees and winners and we’re no different. However, in the interest of giving you smaller more digestible episodes we’ve decided that it’s more beneficial to break those things up, and as such we’re going to have separate shows for separate things. This week’s episode will be in service of the various awards that we’ve decided to give out that aren’t Game Of The Year. This includes a multitude of elements including Best Character, Best Music, and Biggest Shit Show. To be nominated for any of our given categories the games or events must have happened between December 16th of 2019 and December 15th of 2020. Losing The Plot

Every genre of art seems to have its own sort of awards showcasing excellence within it’s given field. Music has The Grammys, the American Music Awards, and the Billboard Music Awards. Television has the Golden Globes and The Emmys. Hollywood and Film, in general, have a metric ton of awards with probably The Oscars, the Golden Globes, and The BAFTAs being the most well known. The biggest difference between those genres and video games, however, is that those awards garner prestige and as much as the DICE Awards are comparable to The Oscars or The Grammys for their respective genres. The thing is though, they’re not prestigious in the least in the eyes of gamers. Enter Geoff Keighley. Keighley began becoming a household name during his run on G4 and eventually becoming the host of the Spike Game Awards. Keighley, however, thought the awards should be as prestigious as The Oscars and would break off to develop his own awards show for video games, simply titled, The Game Awards. Now, in its 7th year, The Game Awards has become many things to many gamers, and that is in essence what we want to talk about for you today.

On top of all of that, Josh has some thoughts on The Queen's Gambit and the first two Friday The 13th films. Austin regales us with anime talk when he discusses Attack On Titan and Demon Slayer. Both of the boys played more Ghost Of Tsushima and they discuss that as well as a couple of gundam games and Josh's first impressions with Yakuza: Like A Dragon.

Every year, around this time, it never fails that people crawl out of their beds after a long day of eating turkey, and go out to do holiday shopping. Whether or not this is an ideal thing is not really debatable because people do it regardless. So we’ve decided, in the spirit of being as obnoxious as possible we would feed into the horrible reality that is Black Friday. So we’re going to run through the sales for video games and give our feedback and hopefully give you something to think about for the holidays. On top of this, Austin has been getting his Spider-Man on in multiple ways, while Josh has been delving deep into True Crime.

Empathy Time Is Over

Going Primal

As listeners may already know, Josh is a massive horror fan. I mean, all he's been talking about for the past couple of episodes is the horror movies he's been watching. That said, Dylan also has an affinity for some horror-based video games such as Resident Evil, and Austin also tends to like horror as a genre. So with Halloween literally right upon us, we thought it would be fun for us to do something a little different for this episode and keep it themed around horror. Today we’re going to pitch our very own horror games to one another. We’ve planned it all out. We’re going to talk about the narratives, the characters, the game mechanics, all of it. All for your entertainment.

On top of that, we’re going to talk a little bit more about some horror films that Josh has been watching. Dylan and Austin have been working on some new content and they’ll talk about that. We’ll also talk about what we’ve been playing and give you something to take a look at with our picks of the week.

Digimon Incest

2018 was a gigantic year for games. Between the heavy hitting stories of Red Dead Redemption 2 and God Of War, the narrative front was covered. There were also two gigantic collectathon checklist games in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Far Cry 5. Indie games flourished with wonderful little titles like Dead Cells and Celeste being amongst big triple AAA titles for Game Of The Year. That’s not even mentioning the really fantastic Tetris Effect, the addictive madness of Super Smash Brothers Ultimate, or the impeccable looking racer Forza Horizon 4. All of these were fantastic games, but for me personally, there was one game that just hit different that year and it was Insomniac’s open world super hero title, Marvel’s Spider-Man. With our third chair out this week, and with Spider-Man Miles Morales right around the corner, we thought it would be a good idea to do a little bit of a deep dive on the 2018 classic and so that is what we plan to do for you today.

We also give our thoughts on some more horror films, almost definitely some talk about Breath Of The Wild 2 or whatever obscure anime game that Austin is playing this week, AND we give our pick of the weeks! We’re also going to discuss some Dead By Daylight news. All of that and more on a jam packed episode of Hunting Pixels.

Toaster Bath

Video games have not always featured stories. When we go back and look at the very first games in the arcade and on home computers, stories were an afterthought if they were even thought of at all. Eventually Stories would worm their way into arcade games in primitive form and with the advent of the home console market, stories began becoming more and more integrated into game development. Eventually they would become the norm especially with the rise in popularity of the RPG genre. It does seem, however, that in recent memory, stories have become slightly less in favor with the general populous. Games such as Fortnite and other battle royale type games, Rocket League, Fall Guys, and Among Us have taken the world by storm. Twitch, the world’s premier video game streaming site, seemingly pushes these titles as well. It is becoming increasingly more obvious that single player narrative based games are being slowly phased from public consciousness and that’s what we intend to talk about today.

In this episode the boys also talk about some anime in the form of Pokemon Journeys and Digimon Last Evolution. Josh brings us up to date on a couple of horror films he has watched as part of his month long horror movie bonanza, as well as his preliminary thoughts on The Haunting Of Bly Manor. Austin gushes just a little about Persona 5 Royal and Dylan talks about how much fun he's having going through Pokemon Shield again! There's also the boy's picks of the week as well as some exciting podcast updates!

The Unofficial Playstation Vita Podcast

Company acquisitions aren’t new to any business, let alone the gaming industry. The recent news, which we will get into later, of Microsoft’s purchase of Zenimax media was gigantic. Not only, did they garner alot of attention, they also managed to gain additional value for their netflix style gaming service, Game Pass, AND bolstered their first party teams. It’s this part that we found probably the most intriguing game room of the acquisition and got us thinking about a ton of things, including what other studios could be bought by the big three. Another thing that Josh talked about with the guys was something along the lines of what our dream first party line up of studios would be. That eventually spun into our topic of today’s show. As some of you know, Josh is a big NFL guy and a massive packers fan. So He proposed the idea of doing something similar to an NFL draft where we take turns picking studios until we have a solid portfolio of 7 studios a piece. So with that said, let the war begin!

Alongside all of this, the boys talk about the roll out of the PS5 and it's preorders. Josh is just a little bit incensed. They also talk about the gigantic news of Microsoft buying Bethesda. There's a little bit of contention in this discussion. The boys also go over, their thoughts on the 3DS and it's official cancellation as well as whether the Vita is a better console and boy does it get heated. Is American Horror Story Asylum still good? Dylan gives us his thoughts, while Austin talks about preparing for his heart to be crushed by the FINAL Digimon Adventure movie. There's some talk of a month long horror movie fest that Josh plans to embark upon and the boys change things up for their pick of the week and all give some musical recommendations! All that and so much more!!!

One of the great things about gaming is its ability to connect with us on some level, whether that be narrative, gameplay mechanics, music, art design, or any other number of factors. One particular way has been through the use of characters. From Mario to Link to Commander Shepard to Geralt Of Rivia, characters are some of the most well known aspects of gaming. So we decided to talk about that today, but with a fun little twist. As a sort of nod to the recently announced Mario 35 and perhaps a look at how we plan to do our game of the year discussion episodes, we decided to talk about our favorite characters in gaming and then count them down in a fight to the death. Who will win our coveted spot as number one video game character, we’re about to find out!
Part 2 of this 2 part episode is dedicated to fighting our characters, picked in the last episode, to the death and picking Hunting Pixel's number one video game character of all time. On top of that we've got some gigantic news to go through. Microsoft finally revealed the price, release date, and pre-order date for the next gen Xbox systems. Ubisoft had another showcase and announced a remake of Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time. Nintendo had a showcase for Mario's 35th anniversary and it was wonderful. On top of that the boys talk about that little game called The Avengers, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater remake, and Overwatch. This episode is packed full!

Incriminating Evidence

The Console Wars as we know them have quietly deteriorated since the initial console war of the early 90s between the likes of the powerhouse Nintendo and the brash newcomer Sega. The following generation saw a new competitor enter the fray with Sony and their mega successful console, the Playstation. The following generation saw the end of Sega and brought another new competitor in Microsoft’s Xbox, and then came the mega successful generation where all three titans of the industry did incredibly well. Last generation, this seemed to flame out with Nintendo going in a completely new and different direction with their mega successful hybrid console, The Switch, and with Playstation jumping out to and holding an enormous lead over it’s chief rival in Microsoft. For many, the console wars remain unabated with fanboys being diametrically opposed to another team. However, for another sect, the console wars have died out. With a new console generation on the horizon, we are here to talk about the next generation of consoles and whether the “war” between the consoles is still here or whether it has gasped it’s last breaths.

Also in this episode, Josh talks about Relic, a fantastic little Australian horror film. Austin regales us with some Pokemon talk, and the boys discuss some news topics. Is Titanfall coming back? According to EA conference call, possibly. Splinter Cell isn't coming back as a video game it would seem, but it's still got life as an animated series. A Wild Sea-Foodie Appears

Review Scores have been around in gaming for a very long time, going as far back as the trade magazine Play Meter. While these reviews weren’t exactly the same as you would see in modern gaming publications, the DNA was there. The entire reviewing process would evolve over time and eventually get to where it is today with a variety of outlets having different interpretations of what reviews are, with some even doing away with the standard review score. Recently, gaming journalism and the entire reviewing process has come under fire with movements such as the early days of GamerGate taking issue with journalistic malpractice and more recently, the entire controversy over The Last Of Us Part 2’s review scores. This has led many to question whether or not reviews and their related scores are in fact even necessary. The boys dive deep on this topic.

Alongside that discussion, what's going on with Ubisoft? Despite having a huge showing with its Ubisoft Play event, the news was overshadowed by a awful string of allegations of sexual misconduct and an eventual firing of three massive figureheads.
