Slacks, the eagerly anticipated debut Edinburgh hour from stand up comedian Kiran Saggu, is coming to Underbelly Bristo Square this August.

All her life Kiran Saggu has battled immigrant and capitalist pressure to succeed from her Desi-British-American background. Now she wonders, must she get her ass up and work? Or can she achieve being loved, adored, rich and fulfilled from the safety of a log position in her London flatshare bed?

In Slacks, Kiran asks big questions such as; ‘How can I live with the fact I didn't start a YouTube channel at 12 years old to make me a millionaire now?’, ‘When will men I date stop telling me they could do stand-up comedy?’, and ‘Can I sue the Daily Mail?’

So You Think You’re Funny semi-finalist Kiran Saggu says, “The truth is… I don’t really hate hard work. As the child of immigrants, I just had a hard time convincing myself that a career in the Arts counted as work. My dad loved painting as a kid. He told his parents he wanted to be an artist. He became an engineer.

“I think a lot of comics feel like they’re lazy, and as an Asian-American, we’re always in fear of not working hard enough. After 1st-generation immigration – what comes next? For me, it’s making people laugh. Just by doing this show, just by being a creative in the West, I’m chartering a completely new territory for my family. But somebody’s got to! Work can be anything – and we shouldn’t be afraid of doing it. 

“I hope to inspire audiences to consider their own upbringings, their privilege, their ambitions, their place in and responsibility to society, then, to forget all that and just have a laugh about this world no matter which tiny bit of it we call home.”

BBC New Comedy Awards finalist Dee Allum (Comedy Central Live) is set to bring her highly-anticipated debut stand-up comedy hour ‘Deadname’ to the 2024 Edinburgh Fringe, performing at Pleasance Courtyard at 4.30pm throughout the festival.

She’s here! She’s queer! Her parents are sort of used to it! In her debut stand-up show, Dee Allum, the greatest (and only) transgender comedian her small village has ever produced, is determined to move on with her life. Questions will be asked and answered like: What is a woman? Shut up! But you’ve kept your Watford FC season ticket? It’s allowed! And at what point is it morally acceptable to return a puppy if they misgender you? The jury is out!

But most importantly, Dee is on a mission to fully embrace who she used to be. From being a little theatre kid who was too chubby to play Oliver Twist, to a love-sick teen who learnt a new language to impress his crush, to discovering that she was transgender whilst at an all boys school. All to have to go through two puberties (frankly, two too many). Will Dee come to terms with her past selves, and become the perfect, flawless, 34DD woman that she always imagined herself to be? After all, didn’t every boy dream of this from time to time?

Dee Allum is an award-winning stand-up comedian and writer. Dee started her comedy career performing sketches with the Cambridge Footlights and wrote the prestigious Footlights Pantomime in 2018. Dee was part of the Pleasance Comedy Reserve 2022 line-up, has written and performed a 45-minute solo stand-up show, and started to become a regular fixture on the UK comedy circuit, as well as performing at cultural events such as Latitude Festival.

In the last two years Dee has been nominated for Best Newcomer at the Chortle Awards, placed as runner up in the Leicester Square Theatre New Comedian of the Year award 2021, won the 2Northdown New Act Competition 2021 and was a finalist in the 2022 BBC New Comedy Award competition. Dee has appeared on Comedy Central Live, as part of Comedy Central’s digital series, and is also set to make her debut on The Stand Up Sketch Show on ITV this summer.

Denai Moore is an artist, songwriter, & food lover, who has carved her own lane in the UK music industry for several years. She first commanded attention with her feature on SBTRKT's 2014 album Wonder Where We Land at the age of 21 and since then, the Jamaican-British artist has made waves with her three solo album releases. Georgie Jones is a writer and performer known for her humour and heart. She was a Roundhouse Poetry Slam finalist, before joining the Roundhouse Poetry Collective and subsequently spent a year as Roundhouse Resident Artist.

It’s all a bit Roundhouse centric this, isn’t it? But WAIT, there’s MORE! Georgie’s one-woman shows combine spoken word, stand up and storytelling and have been commissioned by China Plate, MAC, Warwick Arts Centre, In Good Company and generously supported by the Arts Council.

She has performed in theatres, at festivals and on radio stations all over the UK. She is often praised for her warmth and wit, so took her poetry to social media in search of other, more varied, compliments. Georgie has amassed over 140k followers, over 5.8 million views and her work has been shared by Malorie Blackman, Adrian Lester and British pop-rock band Bastille who said her poetry was ‘fucking brilliant’. Clang.

When she’s not peddling her own work, Georgie loves a bit of collaboration. She has worked with numerous brands to create bespoke poetry commissions, ranging from independent body-positive slow-fashion brand LAW Design Studio to the Woodland Trust and everything in between. She combines her love of writing with her love of love through offering a bespoke ghostwriting service for weddings, speeches and events.

Georgie also writes and performs with Chortle Award nominated sketch group Just These Please who have sold out runs at Edinburgh Fringe and Soho Theatre respectively.

Stella Creasy is the Labour and Co-Operative MP for Walthamstow, first elected in 2010.

She has held a variety of positions within the Labour party, first as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the shadow Education Secretary Andy Burnham, and then in 2011 as a shadow Home Office Minister for crime prevention, in Ed Miliband’s first reshuffle. She ran for the deputy leadership of the party in 2015, coming second. She is currently Chair of Labour Movement for Europe and has campaigned for a continued relationship with the EU and against Brexit induced parliamentary deregulation.

She is an avid campaigner and contributor to debates. Most notably, in July 2019 she put forward the amendment which proposed that if the Northern Ireland Assembly was not restored by October that Westminster would legalise abortion in the country. MotheRED – a campaign to financially support mums to be selected and elected as Labour Party candidates in the next General Election. She has also campaigned against ‘legal loan sharks’, introducing a Ten-Minute-Rule Bill to cap the cost of credit to avoid extortionate rates and force the Government to tighten restrictions.

She recently wrapped on Bank of Dave 2, Paddington in Peru, and new BBC detective drama Ludwig. She is about to begin production on British Comedy Feature Go Away! alongside Michael Socha and Hugh Bonneville.

Alongside her acting projects, she plays with her band Marry Me Emelie, who are releasing their debut EP 'the distance makes the mountains blue' this autumn. Now based in London, they started out as an acoustic act on the Paris folk circuit, gradually evolving towards their current americana-influenced electric style. Leyla is an artist from Glasgow. She is a performance poet, theatre maker, screenwriter, facilitator and project leader. In 2014 she won her first UK National Slam at the Royal Albert Hall and has gone on to perform on the same bill as poets such as Kae Tempest, Hollie McNish and Low-key as well as having supported the legend that is John Cooper Clarke on his Scottish tour.

Aside from performing, Woodzy facilitates a variety of workshops in schools, colleges and workplaces. Looking to change people's perspective on poetry. Avril Devaney MBE was born in Lancashire and always knew as a child that she wanted to work with people, especially those who tended to be marginalised. She initially embarked on a pre social work course but applied for mental health nurse training after doing a placement on a mental health ward and realising that, in mental health care, your biggest clinical intervention is your relationship with the person you are caring for. 

She qualified in 1986 and worked her way up to a community sisters post where she was instrumental in developing the first community based drug and alcohol services. In 1999 she received the Queen’s Nursing Institute Award for Innovation after establishing a mental health nursing service in police custody suites. In 2000 she was named as one of the top 100 nurses to mark the Queen Mother’s 100th birthday. In 2001 she moved to North Wales and began to work in Cheshire and Wirral. By 2003 Avril had been appointed to the role of Director Of Nursing where she continued to innovate and find ways to help people live their fullest lives. In 2005 she met her future husband, Jim on a scuba diving holiday in the challenging waters of Scapa Flow in Scotland. They married and had their son Jamie in 2007 when Avril was 42. Avril also completed her MSC in Health and Social Care that same year.

Avril established a link with a mental health ward in South West Uganda in 20010. Sadly Jamie died after a short illness during a family holiday and fundraising trip to Uganda in 2011. Determined to find the meaning in this terrible loss Avril and Jim, along with close friends and colleagues,  established a charity in Jamie’s memory that went from working with one hospital in 2011 to 25 hospitals by 2023 and has been instrumental in helping to shape and develop mental health care across Uganda - touching countless lives. 

In 2015 Avril and Jim adopted two boys, Alex and Daniel. Avril received an MBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours 2016 for services to Mental Health Nursing after leading projects  to challenge stigma and to establish the first smoke free hospital trust in England- helping to change attitudes and extending the lives of people with mental illness. Avril contributed to several national nursing initiatives and received the Chief Nursing Officer’s Gold award in 2019. Avril retired aged 55 to spend more time with Alex and Daniel. She is now a full time mum, wife and jam maker.

Mia is a self-taught chef, recipe developer and content creator from London who has always had a love of food. She experimented with cooking from a young age but quickly developed an obsession with street food after leaving university. In 2020, Mia turned her passion into a full time job when she founded Always Cook on the Bright Side, an online vegan cooking school, in the midst of the pandemic. She went on to cook with hundreds of people from around the world as well as the likes of Disney UK and some of the most prolific universities in the country before securing a job with the biggest food media brand in the UK, Twisted, (which boasts over 40m followers across their social media platforms). She now runs Twisted’s plant based sister brand, Twisted Green, a non-judgemental space for plant curious eaters to discover new ways of cooking. Mia’s aim is to transform kitchens around the world from a daunting space to ones that are filled with joy...and the irresistible aroma of frying garlic.

Peter Bennett was born in a West Yorkshire and grew up in the 60s and 70s, where at the time when it was very difficult to be accepted as a gay man. By burying his true self, he qualified as a Chartered Building Surveyor. After retiring early from his work, he moved to London to fulfil a truer life being himself.

He has volunteered at Switchboard ever since (the LGBT+ helpline charity), to support his chosen family, who still struggle for full societal acceptance. He was invited to take part in the Ru Paul Drag Race UK makeover challenge in 2023, to represent the charity and increase awareness to a wider audience.

His stories talk of navigating the difficult AIDS period, toxic shame, Section 28 and age of consent legislation. He claims he is "trying to help people get their shit together but not so sure I’ve got mine sorted."

Jason Patel is a rising artist who stars alongside Ben Hardy (Bohemian Rhapsody) in ‘UNICORNS’ a Feature Film which premiered at Toronto International Film Festival 2023, BFI London Film Festival 2023 & Palm Springs Film Festival 2024 directed by Sally El Hosaini & James Krishna Floyd produced by Philip Herd’s Chromatic Aberration, Maven Screen Media and River Road Entertainment. The project is executively produced by Stephen Daldry. 

The film received universally positive reviews including best of fest at Palm Springs and placed Patel on several best performers lists. 

Patel performs his own music in the film (a track from his EP) and also has a sync placement for his single One Last Dance.

Joey Phillips embarked on his career at the young age of 13 with a breakthrough role in the sensational musical, ’Billy Elliot’. This production, based on the beloved feature film of the same name, directed by Stephen Daldry and featuring music by Elton John, saw Phillips co-originating the role of Michael, best friend of Billy Elliot.

Following this success, Phillips ventured into numerous television roles, including Half- moon Investigations, Doctors, The Royal, Holby City, Casualty and also played opposite Juliet Stevenson, Peter Capaldi and Alfie Allen in Jimmy McGovern’s critically acclaimed Accused’ for the BBC. Joey made his feature film debut as the leading role of Eddie in Stephen Cookson’s ‘My Angel’ playing opposite Timothy Spall, Brenda Blethyn and Celia Imrie. He won Best Newcomer at the Monaco International Film Festival for his performance.

Phillips went on to train at the prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama and after graduating has enjoyed a successful career in theatre including productions such as ‘God’s and Monsters’ at Southwark Playhouse, Rodolpho in Arthur Miller’s ‘A View From the Bridge’ at The Gate Theatre Dublin, ‘Who Cares?’ At The Lowry theatre in Manchester, ‘Romeo and Juliet’ & ‘Richard III’ at Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre, ‘A Christmas Carol’ at the RSC and ‘Breaking the Code’ opposite Edward Bennet.

Now, after captivating audiences on stage and screen, Joey makes a return to television in the highly anticipated seventh season of Outlander where he portrays Denzell Hunter — a Quaker who faced expulsion from his community after choosing to serve as a surgeon for the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War.

June Miles-Kingston is a singer and drummer, best known for her work with various successful bands and singers in the 1980s. 

She was a founding member of the post-punk group the Mo-dettes and later became a session drummer and backing vocalist for a variety of British post-punk, new wave, and pop artists. 

She went on to play drums with Everything but the Girl, the Fun Boy Three and the Communards. As she mentions, there was a period where she appeared on Top Of The Pops every week.

She then went on to study fine art at St. Martin's and filmmaking at the University of Sussex. Her film Dear Miss Bassey was awarded a prize at the London 'Shorts' Film Festival She continues to make music and films and is writing about her musical experiences.

Y.A featured in the US hit “I Got the Mic” produced by Tina Knowles and has headlined on Sky Art's BAFTA award winning TV series “Life and Rhymes” hosted by the late Benjamin Zephaniah. Y.A’s clients include well known brands such as Dove, Red Bull UK, The Big Idea Media company, Snap.inc and PwC US to name a few. 

Y.A recently hosted the Money 20/20 “50 years of Hip Hop Icons” concert at the famous Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas presenting the likes of Rev Run, DJ Ruckus and DJ Spinderella. Y.A performed a spoken word piece before the legendary Grand Master Flash’s set as an ode to those who pioneered the music genre.

Y.A also became the first spoken word artist on the highly regarded Color’s platform with an editorial on her poetic interpretation of Palette 1’s primeval colors.

Y.A has been mentored by the formidable Kae Tempest and 7 x Grammy nominated, Natalie Floacist Stewart of Neo Soul duo Floetry.

Some of Y.A’s previous commissions and performances include Vegas Money 20/20, Amsterdam Money 20/20 FinTech Summit, SNAPS DEI innovation Summit 2020, London Fashion Week, Universal Studios, Breaking Conventions, The Tate Modern, Greater London Authority and Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Y.A leads the Lewisham Music Lyricist Collective and the Alchemy Spoken Word Collective. She also founded the Young Wordsmith Project for young people in South East London. 

Y.A has toured internationally in Europe and the US. She is a proud mental health advocate, youth participation advocate and women’s rights activist. Y.A has worked with The Million Women Rise and the Women's Equality Party to campaign for an end to gender-based violence against women and girls.

Y.A challenges some of the most common misconceptions of poets, women and mothers, all whilst continuing to represent South Asian female creatives in the UK.

Jenny Foulds (she/her) is a queer performance poet, writer and actress from Scotland. She is the owner of ADHD and Dyslexia. Jenny was the 2021 Scottish Poetry Slam Champion and was runner up in the World Slam Championships in 2021, as well as being host and curator of the Brighton based Spoken Word night Rebel Soapbox. She has had feature and headline gigs at nights across the UK including Hammer & Tongue, Loud Poets, Tongue Fu, Stanza Poetry festival, and Edinburgh Fringe. As an actress she was a series regular in Two Thousand Acres of Sky (BBC) and appeared in various TV and film roles including Rebus, Mandancin’, Taggart and The Debt Collector. She founded the street art blog Happy Graffiti, which later became a book published by Octopus Books (a Hachette imprint) in 2013. Life Learnings of a Nonsensical Human is her first solo show.

Rebel Soapbox is a Rambunctious Spoken Word night hosted and curated by Jenny Foulds. Cockney spoken word poet, play therapist, and author Louise Hale aka Curly Wordy often refers to her tongue as her paintbrush. She is driven by the healing power of words and the unsung stories that live in all of us. Her poetry draws on lived experience to shine a light on brave narratives that speak of thriving through adversity, healing from trauma, finding voice in feelings and all in ups and downs in life that build our bones. Louise draws on a multitude of skillsets - community journalism, teaching and therapy to fuel her poetry.

As a poet she has performed headline gigs across the capital. As a play therapist she supports children and young people with their mental health and wellbeing. She recently performed with for women’s refuge alongside a choir. She has worked with Kings College and UCL on poetry commissions and lead a campaign for children’s mental health with the movement, Thrive LDN.

Kemani Anderson is the lead vocalist and songwriter of the jazz-funk band ‘Secret Night Gang’ which he is a founding member of. At 23 years old, he has already performed at Montreux Jazz Festival and North Sea Jazz Festival. The band also supported Khraungbin on tour. Heavily influenced by church growing up, he then developed a passion for soul, R&B, reggae and jazz music and became inspired by the likes of Al Jarreau, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, Earth, wind and Fire, Chaka Khan, D’angelo and many other artists.

Andrew Gower is a Liverpool Actor/Musician. For over the past decade he has appeared in hit TV shows like Black Mirror, Carnival Row, Outlander and many more. He recently wrapped on new ITVX show ‘The Winter King’ (which airs this December) and BBC’s Sherwood Season 2 directed by Clio Barnard. 

Alongside his acting work, he is also the Frontman & Lyricist of the band Gustaffson. In 2022 the band recorded their debut EP ‘The Jacaranda’ which was produced by Elbow’s Craig Potter at Blueprint Studios Manchester. They have since released two live singles ‘Northern Baby’ and ‘Champagne Socialist’. Whilst performing at some of their favourite U.K. venues including The Cavern, The Lexington and The Liverpool Empire Theatre. The final gig of the year will be at the 100 Club London on Wednesday 8th November. A Gustaffson debut album is just around the corner.

Highlyy was just experimenting when she posted her first track “Soldier” to Tik Tok in the middle of the night. Now, it soundtracks over 185K videos, and its music video has racked up almost 5 million views on YouTube.

Born Highly Blessed Mazina, only 19 years old, the rising star comes from a long line of musicians, with a singer mother, classical musician grandparents, and guitarist father who put her and her siblings in music lessons. The Congolese gospel music that would play while growing up in her Redbridge home influenced the music she would come to make – instilling in her a love for West African melodies and lending it a spiritual grounding.

Her confidence is backed by experience – since the age of 13, Highlyy has understood how to capture attention with a song. Uploading freestyles, song covers, and singing challenges on Instagram, she discovered she had a knack for going viral. Dropping out of sixth form to pursue a music career, she joined music school East London Arts and Music (ELAM) before leaving after a short period, feeling she didn’t fit into its environment. While feeling lost in the aftermath, she went to visit a friend in Birmingham. Out of the blue, another friend sent her “Hustle” by Reminisce featuring BNXN and D Smoke, urging her to write to it straight away and send it as soon as she was done. At around 2AM, she got to work, rapidly creating a dulcet new song based around its original chorus, while weaving her own story of struggle around it.  

“Everyone was saying that this is gonna go viral,” she says. “I posted a 15 second clip on TikTok that didn't do anything but... I left it for a month, did a sped up version, and the rest is history, really.” She watched as it grew from nothing to half a million TIkTok views, to its staggering 27.5 million total now. Later, the first clip from her wholesome, intimate music video would similarly garner over 120,000 Instagram likes on her page. “We wanted the video to be family-centric, but also a vibe.” Seeking to introduce herself in the most authentic way she could, Highlyy included herself dancing in Congolese clothing, her real friends, and featured cameos from her siblings. 

Later this year, she plans to release her debut EP +243, which features five heartfelt afropop tracks that will tell the scope of her story. Motivated by artists like Tems, Burna Boy, and family friend Yung Bxne in both sounds and story, her sights are set on becoming a “G.O.A.T. of the genre” and works to inspire others to go after their dreams.

The Repeat Beat Poet also known as (PJ), is a Hip Hop Poet and broadcaster fusing traditional poetics and Hip Hop culture to capture and extend moments of time, thought, and feeling. PJ has performed across the UK and internationally at venues including the Southbank Centre and Ronnie Scotts in London, performing alongside writers like Margaret Atwood, Salena Godden, and Roger Robinson. He co-founded the Hip Hop open mic night Pen-Ting, created the Spoken Word radio show #TheRepeatBeatBroadcast and hosts the multi-award nominated Lunar Poetry Podcast.

His brilliant debut pamphlet ‘A testament to Life and Death’ contains poems that function as blessings, memorials, prophecies, and survivor’s guides for soldiering through modern life while being Black in Britain.

Leyla is an artist from Glasgow. She is a performance poet, theatre maker, screenwriter, facilitator and project leader. Aude Langlois is a French composer, sound designer and sound artist based in Berlin for the last decade. She is a graduate of “Sound Studies” at the University of Arts in Berlin and of “Music and Musicology” at Paris-Sorbonne. You can hear her work in films, documentaries and music releases. With electronic hardware, field recordings, and self-made recordings of her voice and acoustic instruments, she creates sound textures with depths.

Her interests lay in the connection of memory, technical crafting and the materiality of sound. She also performs improvised live shows within the duet EKHEO together with Belinda Sykora, exploring the relationship of the human voice, voice modulation, AI and ethics on a sonic level. Furthermore, they create sound for theatre and performances across France, Germany and Austria.

Sarah Nelson is part writer/director and educator. She is associate writer and director at the nationally renowned Oldham Theatre Workshop, and a visiting lecturer at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. In 2019 she won the ‘Inspire Award’ for ‘Women in film, art and media’, and her play “Letter to Boddah” won the ‘Bobby Award’ at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. She is one of my favourite people, she’s warm, HILARIOUS and incredibly intelligent.

Norah Lopez Holden is an award-nominated, Spanish-British actor, who is also Caitlin's best friend! In 2021 Norah starred as Othelia alongside Cush Jumbo, to critical acclaim. She has performed at The Globe Theatre, all over London and at The Royal Exchange in Manchester. As well as being an incredible actor, Norah is an activist and a great friend. She is a keen flamenco dancer and knitter, in between performances on stage.

Ash Mulimba, aka Mulimba, is a London-based music artist and singer-songwriter signed in publishing to Ninja Tune records. He has toured all over Europe and opened for the likes of Tom Walker and Friendly Fires. We sat down in Ant's kitchen to have this conversation and although Caitlin had never met Ash before, it has turned out to be one of her favourite episodes.
