I drove my parents to the airport at 3am and recorded this upon arriving home at like 4:30, and two hours prior to driving my parents I was awoken by a drainage pipe cracking and water spraying into our bedroom. I honestly think my being able to keep my energy level up until the last five minutes of this episode is pretty impressive. Also, did you know the airports are a mess right now? I just hope they aren't bothering you too much!

I HOPE YOU LIKE HEARING THE PHRASE "TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME"!!!! Anyway, Rax King joined me this week to reacquaint herself with Bill Maher after over a decade away from occasionally watching him. Does she think he's gotten better with time? I mean I'm not even going to pretend like she does; she's immediately struck by how diminished she is. But he's not the only thing that's diminished: so is this fucking two person panel, as evidenced by the fact that this week the panel has, I cannot stress this enough, zero chemistry. But the highlight of the episode is his near histrionic response to Trump insulting him one time on the computer. Will we get his full response, or will we inexplicably have to wait two weeks? Well, you'll have to listen to find out (he says he'll do it in two weeks.)

Also, if you hear distant laughing in the background my wife's friend Emma was over and she was probably laughing at something the baby was doing. It was NOT about the podcast, TRUST ME.

Wow, this show sucks! This episode's coming to you late because guest Taylor Lorenz, who was previously booked to do the show next month, saw who the interview guest was and said "I hate this man and must talk about it" (paraphrasing.) And we did! She is the rare guest who truly has as little familiarity with Bill Maher as possible, and also late night just in general, so it was FASCINATING to watch someone discover it via the worst possible example of it. We talk about the interview for a while, the boring panel for not as long (though I still found one guest INFURIATING) and then we heard a deeply confusing final New Rule that will make you say "not homophobic enough" JUST KIDDING!

If there are weird typos in this I wrote it on my phone while feeding a baby so gimme a freakin break!

She's a great guest, but listen; some weeks writing this description is harder than others, because it's just like, yeah, this guy sucks ass and this show is bad. I think we do a pretty good job of making fun of it, but if you've listened to the show before, you know that. Are there any surprises or anything to tease? Here's the thing: this week, there is. The final minute of the final New Rule does such a shock one eighty quality-wise that we were both truly stunned by it. You'll be shock, I swear to God...

It's pretty funny how much worse he's gotten at his job, but hearing him do such a bad job talking about such important things is really tough to deal with. Also, a nemesis from the show's past returns and somehow becomes the voice of reason. Sucks ass, man.

Real Time s24e1 - Sorry, My Literal Baby, I'm Back feat Eliza Skinner

That's right, God of Emperor of Turn Mountain Will Weldon is back in the hosting chair (it's my wife's desk chair, which she will probably want back once she's back at work) to talk about the season 24 premiere of Real Time with Bill Maher. My guest this week? Writer, Comedian, and... pottist? Potterist? Pottery maker? Eliza Skinner. Eliza is immediately displeased with me for having her watch a modern episode, and then we are immediately confronted with the sub-punchlines of a monologue that mostly just feel like a guy saying stuff. But what of the actual political content of the show, you ask? Well, he sort of manages to be displeased with ICE, but his both sides obsession immediately takes over and, I'll admit it even just here in the episode discussion, I think the lack of acknowledgement of the bravery and patience and fortitude of the people of Minnesota fighting an illegal government paramilitary group sent to terrorize them is genuinely outrageous and offensive. God this guy's a fucking prick! Also, Eliza comes in hot with a new take on Bill Maher's sexuality.

In all sincerity, thanks so much for the kind words from everyone about the birth of my child, who has already been cast in the freaking sequel to It's Alive, folks!!!!! Also, thank you to all the guest hosts for helping me out, they all did even better than I'd hoped and I would've gone insane without them.

Then he has a go at the Kennedys. Honestly, I think the only person or people that come up who he doesn't have a grudge against is Willie Nelson. I listened to all of these at 1.5 speed before posting them and I think this one made me enter the Speed Force.

Due to big time life stuff, I am unlocking this formerly Patreon exclusive episode which is about a piece of media that I think is kind of a foundational thing for I Hate Bill Maher: Bill Maher on "2 Angry Men", defending his dinner at the White House, and his subsequent monologue about it on the following episode of Real Time. I know that some of the more perverse listeners of the podcast prefer an episode that's like a rip roarin' 180 minutes long or whatever, but I have to admit that a one hour and fifteen minute episode about a fairly innocuous 60 minute television show was like, really good for me at this particular moment. The real downside is that internet sick-o Stefan Heck (streamer/podcaster) really deserved worse than this, but he also seemed authentically traumatized by having to watch Bella Thorne on Club Random a few months ago, so maybe that would've been too much, I don't know. He did have to sit through a lot of whining from Bill Maher, Joe Scarborough, and some freak from the AEI, but then he also got to enjoy watching a lone conservative truly get the absolute hell beaten out of him, to such a degree that I created a new award to give to him. I'm such a giving fucking person...

Classic episode of Real Time here, and by that I mean it was so boring my guest and I literally hard a hard time finding things to talk about, outside of the midshow comedy bit and the final two minutes of panel discussion. Who was that guest, you ask? Why, it was comedian Brandie Posey, and also thankfully we were given a brief reprieve from the episode by her eighteen year old dog waking up and doing that very throaty whine that chihuahua mixes do. In a new twist on an old classic, Brandie is put through a judgement free LIGHTNING ROUND, and then I sort of slowly turn into a pile of misery mush as I do everything in my power to not have a psychotic episode where I carve David Frum's name all over my body before self-immolating.

Obviously, given who the Club Random guest is, I simply must slap a content warning on here for talk of childhood sexual abuse; we also talked how strange it is that Bill Maher shows so little interest in, or ability to, talk about Woody Allen's work as a filmmaker considering what a huge fan he claims to be, the pathetic sympathy old men inherently pull out of you, and how one of these guys does a pretty good job (from a PR standpoint) of talking about being accused of sexual assault, while the other demonstrates pretty much the worst way to do it. It was a deeply strange conversation, one that I can't imagine Woody Allen's fans and true believers enjoyed very much, and neither one of us ends up particularly clear on why Bill Maher even wanted to have it.

Due to scheduling issues, I am forced to pause Bella Thorne on Club Random month (I assure you: this was my fault) so instead here is an analysis of Bill Maher and Howard Stern's relationship, released early than originally intended. I honestly could not think of anyone with a deeper knowledge of shock jocks generally, and Stern specifically than longtime podcaster Bryan Quinby, so thank God he said yes to doing this. The primary focus was on two episodes of Stern: one from 1999, and then one from 2001, where Bill Maher came on and did an all whack pack version of Politically Incorrect. He did it very begrudgingly, I should add, and the two episodes had EXTREMELY different vibes to them. I also threw in clips from other sources, because I went a little crazy and dug up A LOT of old Stern. Honestly, this episode is a lot more Stern than Maher, but if you like listening to Bill Maher get made fun of you're going to find a lot to like here. We also talked about shock jocks just in general, and also what we are losing with the death of radio.

First time guest Kyle Ayers and multi time guest Mike Carrozza (comedians, the lot of them) join the podcast to talk about the 2025 HBO comedy special "Is Anyone Else Seeing This?" which is truly, TRULY atrocious. You can literally hear the energy slowly drain out of the guests as the episode goes on, to where they go from talking over each other almost constantly, to sitting there in near silence seemingly on the verge of tears. I LOVE TO HARM MY FRIENDS VIA MY PODCAST!!!!! Genuinely, this is probably the worst comedy special ever recorded. It has no flow, it is not constructed properly, it is mostly him whining and bitching about his personal grievances with seemingly no ability to see that shit is not funny, nor does any of it really resemble a joke. There is also an unbelievable amount of transphobia, and it's just sprinkled all over the special because, once again, THIS MAN CANNOT PUT TOGETHER A SET! You group the same topics together, with maybe a call back or two later; you don't just jump back and forth between three topics, over and over. Any comic with any experience would have put this set together by saying something like"First my transphobic chunk, then my I hate kids stuff, and then the sex stuff". This comic would also be a bad person. Oh my God, OH MY GOD, this is the most incompetent thing ever!!!!

THEN we get to this god forsaken episode, which features a panel with absolutely no chemistry, a uh "bold thinker" that Bill Maher just asks about the Bachelorette, a truly nauseating mid-show comedy bit, and finally some of the most joyless New Rules you've ever seen. But the episode doesn't just feature that, oh no: there's a one on one with STEVE BANNON, and then an absolutely pathetic and hateful appearance by Piers Morgan, plus another guy who seems broadly okay-to-good, depending on the issue. Now, you're probably like "Surely Will watched this alone; there's no way would he subject another person to this." Well, shows what you know you stupid fuck, you absolute dumb ass. Writer/reporter Eoin Higgins joined me, and he was sent to an alternate reality where everyone in America really cares and is constantly thinking about where Bill Maher is having dinner on any given night, followed by Bill Maher doing even worse with Steve Bannon than he did with Matt Gaetz, and finally whole thing wraps up with a panel where Bill Maher gets his feelings hurt in the first minute, and then does a lot of sulking and makes bitchy comments for awhile before finally snapping out of it so he can talk about how all of the far right's crimes are actually the fault of the left. Anyway, this week I was joined by another absolute sicko, podcaster Al Worth.They've taken a break from debunking Russell Brand on their show, On Brand, to join ME on MY show, where we have a particularly difficult time enduring another episode of Andrew Sullivan being truly unbearable. We also spend some time trying to figure out whose show is a bigger tax on its host's ability to live and think as a normal human should. Also, the last ten minutes might sound a little different because I had to switch what source I used audio from. It's totally fine, it just might sound a little different. Oh, and if you're curious, the war games I reference are known as the "Millennium Challenge 2002". I'm not exaggerating! It's really what happened!

I'm not sure what happened with the audio this week, but all the files ended up fucked up in one way or another, so this episode suffers from being too quiet/not totally clear at various points. Then we get to the Real Time recap, and we get some real classic Real Time shit: a panel with no chemistry, Bill Maher being weirdly obsessed with something we can't imagine other people are bothered by, general casual homophobia, and we make the startling discovery that there may be an age appropriate woman that Bill Maher is horny for. Crazy, man. Crazy.

Hello everyone, I'm doing that thing where a podcast takes a bye week (every week is a "bi week" in my apartment, heh heh... ha... ha) and just posts one of its Patreon episodes. Genuinely, I feel like an asshole for doing it, but I'm insanely behind on all the podcast stuff and then earlier today I fucked my throat up in the most embarrassing way possible, so I'm just going to take it easy and maybe learn to chew my food more thoroughly, a thing that typically only babies need to learn. Okay, so I had two possible episode descriptions in mind for this, and here's the first one:

This week, I see if Bill Maher is capable of reckoning with the fact that he got the election spectacularly wrong by watching the first Real Time episode post 2024 election, which is season 22, episode 34. I'm not going to spoil anything that happens here, except that I got so mad while recording this that my normally unnoticeable hernia started really bothering me. I'm very deflated by the end, whoops!

Here's the second description I had in mind:

"I sent Uncle Mac’s thumb-buster and badge over to the Rangers. Put up in a museum. Your daddy ever tell you how Uncle Mac come to his reward? Gunned down on his own porch over in Hudspeth County. Seven or eight of ’em come up to here. Wantin’ this and wantin’ that. Uncle Mac went back in the house and got the shotgun, they was way ahead of him. Shot him in the doorway. Aunt Ella came out and tried to stop the bleedin’. Uncle Mac all the while tryin’ to get that shotgun. They just sat there on their horses watchin’ him die. After a while, one of ’em says somethin in Injun and they all turned and left out. Well, Uncle Mac knew the score even if Aunt Ella didn’t. Shot through the left lung. And that was that. As they say."

Steve talks about his love of blowhards, realizing qualities he once thought were good might actually be not as good, and then finally an episode of Real Time that, if I'm being honest, I really struggled to get through. Sean Astin makes no sense, Larry Miller is... fuck, man. I can't handle him. The most surprising thing about the whole thing was the revelation that Patty Duke is Sean Astin's mom, which I didn't even actually hear until I was pulling clips for the edit.

This one is a little less focused than normal, right down to multiple people complaining about what an asshole my cat is. Oh, and at one point Jane goes "who's that, he's cute" and she was referring to Tyler Glasnow, not the batting coach like I thought she meant, which in retrospect should've been obvious to me.

The sound quality on this one is not good because I lost the high quality audio files and was stuck using the Zoom recording. I genuinely, from the bottom of my heart, do not understand what could've happened, but such is life. Anyway, this episode of Real time was a real dud, but that's okay (sort of) because our guest wasn't! Writer and comedian Pallavi Gunalan joined me, and she came in firmly on the "I have only seen bits and pieces of Maher but I hated all of it" side of things. A recent interview shows just how completely out of touch Bill Maher is with the city he calls home and supposedly loves is, plus questions, and a mid episode comedy sketch that's so inscrutable I... I just don't know, man. And all this headlined by a Real Time panel that has so little chemistry and flow that it genuinely seems like Bill Maher got annoyed and just ended the episode early. CONTENT WARNING: More fucking Kobe Bryant talk. Good lord, I forgot how obsessed the country was with this story...

Oh boy! After a brief hiatus to watch a movie (what, did we have a substitute teacher hahahahahahahahaha *has a coughing fit*) we're back to the recaps, and this week we're joined by comedian and writer Emily Heller (What is...? A Jeopardy Podcast!). She very cleverly finds a way to largely not deal with the deep moral quandaries of the judgement free question zone before we plunge into what is absolutely the cruelest and nastiest episode of the show so far: Real Time season 1, episode 11. Genuinely, a big chunk of Real Time was spent talking about the Kobe Bryant sexual assault case, and they do NOT do it with tact or humanity, but look this is what I signed up for. We manage to still have some fun, especially at the end with a reenactment of an interview Bill Maher did on Larry King, followed by the shocking revelation of what Bill Maher's production company was named. If you really don't want to listen to us talk about the world's worst panel discussion about rape, it starts at 52:39 and ends at 1:15:58. No judgement. Also, sorry the episode is a day late.

Not unlike Bill Maher himself, I took a little break from Real Time to watch the only Bill Maher star vehicle, 1991's Pizza Man. I was joined by Podcaster/Writer/Comedian Caitlin Durante, so there is officially a witness to the absolutely fuckin' BIZARRE tonal shifts and plot developments in this thing. Which parts were meant to be jokes? Why is it so fucking dark? And why is the director so opposed to getting some God damned coverage? Caitlin was so determined to answer some of those questions that she... I can't believe i'm saying this, but she watched it twice. Twice! Honestly, this is almost entirely just a fun episode talking about a crazy movie, so definitely enjoy it because next week has got some DARK shit in it.

Andrew revealed which camp his past with Maher falls into: "used to be a fan", or "encountered him here and there during my lifetime". Then we got to the episode and its especially bad panel, though panelist Ann Coulter did force us to consider the age old question "Who whines about the whiners?" (roughly translated from the Latin phrase, "Quis queritur de eo qui queritur?")
