The Late, Great Fredrick Brennan (Part One)

Today would have been Fredrick Brennan's 32nd birthday. He died in his sleep last month, so here's Fred's partner to memorialize the 8chan founder who realized he was wrong, got out, and did what he could to take down the monster he helped create.

His family wanted to keep the news private until now for personal reasons, so we recorded this a couple weeks after his death but are only releasing it now that the news has officially broken. Don't worry, there's no crying in the episode. Unfortunately, the audio quality is really bad because due to the circumstances Jay didn't get to record in his usual spot. I'm sorry that one of our most historically significant episodes is also one of our worst-sounding ones, but given the circumstances I hope you will forgive.

In the late 1990s a Thai woman named Sarinee Achavanuntakul launched a website that would give a generation of gamers access to thousands of classic titles for free, despite the best attempts of the video game industry's lobbying group to shut it down. If that wasn't cool enough, she's been spending the past couple decades fighting to make the internet a better place for journalists under the Thai monarchy. When Something Awful poster Orenronen began translating the relatively obscure Japanese visual novel Danganronpa in 2011, it was considered too weird to get an official English localization. Over a decade later, Danganronpa is a multimillion-selling franchise and one of the most successful visual novel franchises in the west. It's one of the most impactful sagas to come out of Something Awful and also our first foray into the Let's Play subforum, so why not pay tribute to both by doing an exploration of the plot of Danganronpa in tandem? Jay has played the entire game and a good chunk of the sequel, now he just has to summarize an infamously complicated and weird story from a different language and culture in an audio medium.

Jay here, we're starting to work on new episodes and people have been asking if the show was coming back so I wanted to make it official and put something on the feed.

The bad news, it's going to be just a little longer. But I didn't want to leave you empty-handed so I'm including a double minisode to end 2023 on a bang: an oral history of the year's events on Something Awful, and a life update of just what exactly I've been up to this past half a year (!!!)

For those of you who aren't fans of the minisodes, don't fret because we recorded two proper episodes with Winslow a couple months back and as soon as Producer Steve returns from vacationing in Bali he's going to be working on getting those to you in 2024.

Thanks for being there for me, I literally wouldn't be where I am right now if it weren't for this show and I'm looking forward to another year of great stories about goons and their consequences!

And don't worry if you've never heard of it before, because the game itself is arguably the least interesting part of this whole sordid saga.

Today he's reading a rambling, pages-long run-on paragraph from a trucker's manifest explaining why they are no longer allowed to deliver to Walmart. Low-Carb Goons

In summer of 2011, Something Awful's fitness subforum hosted a thread obsessed with the concept of a diet low in carbohydrates not only as a way of losing weight but as a miracle cure for everything that ailed them. Then in fall of 2011, a previously healthy 21 year-old goon was prescribed statins by his doctor due to eating nothing but peanut butter, eggs, bacon, and hot dogs for weeks at the encouragement of the low-carb thread.

This episode is not an attack on the concept of a low-carb diet, it is a case study in the Goon tendency to let their geeky love of optimizing and minmaxing spill over into other aspects of their lives with disastrous results. And you better believe the low-carbers have some incredibly funny and unique takes on vegetarians!

The deceptive allure of the mystery box is something everyone has to learn to innoculate themselves from at one point or another. For most of us it is a metaphorical mystery box that confounds. like a TV show that keep stringing you along season after season without providing answer. Discovering and Restoring the Workprint of 'Manos: the Hands of Fate' (Part One)

In 1966, an El Paso fertilizer salesman named Harold P. Warren created a movie called Manos: The Hands of Fate.

In 1993, the comedy program Mystery Science Theater 3000 released an episode dedicated to Manos that enshrined it in the pantheon of bad movies and created generations of fans.

Then in 2011, a Something Awful poster named Ben Solo found the pristine workprint of Manos: The Hands of Fate at an estate sale and kicked off a years-long odyssey of trying to get the film the restoration and preservation it deserved while fending off bad actors that wanted to turn his discovery into their payday.

For our first real episode, we discuss one of the most-requested stories from the Twitter account: The story of a bored mid-20s Californian who decided the cure for his mental illnesses and the ennui of comfortable middle-class life was quitting his job and walking across America coast-to-coast in the middle of summer with little preparation and ignoring the guidance of experienced backpackers telling him that he was ill-equipped and the route would likely kill even an experienced long-distance hiker.
