<itunes:summary>Mary Slessor was one of the first women to be commemorated in the Hall of Scottish Heroes half way up the Wallace Monument near Stirling. So who was she? What had she done to earn her place among such exalted company? Her story is a fascinating one; from Dundonian Mill Girl to missionary in remotest Africa and then becoming the first female magistrate in the British Empire. Mary Slessor certainly earned her place among the greats of Scotland.

Hosted on Acast.
As a young reporter watching Councillor Tom McAughtrie in action was fascinating. Over four decades he has been involved in some of the big decisions that have shaped not just the town of Dumfries but of the region as a whole. Over the years, and thanks to the the advent of social media, Tom and I have kept in touch and when I started doing these podcasts I immiediately thought Tom, with his strong views and opinions, would make a great subject and listening back to the result of the couple of hours we spent together I don't think I was wrong. You'll not be disappointed, Tom's views are as forthright as ever, especially when it comes to council officials working from home and Labour party complacency in the last decade and a half.

Hosted on Acast.
Last time we spoke to Lotti Conway we asked: "How would you cope if all your memories were erased overnight?" Lotti had a massive seizure in April 2020 that left her in hospital, scared and alone as she couldn't remember where she was or why she was there. Doctors diagnosed Autoimmune encephalitis and when we met her journey along the road to recovery had begun, with no one quite sure where the destination was going to be.Eighteen months later we've been back to talk to Lotti and mum Kate to find out how the journey along that road has been going and in this interview you'll hear how they are both coming to terms with the fact that Lotti's condition is not going to get any better and her short term memory problems are something they are having to come to deal with as a part of every day life. The pair admit there have been a lot of tears, but as you will hear there's a lot of laughter and humour too, that helps them get through their darker moment.Hear her first interview by following this link... https://on.soundcloud.com/bmipwPhotograph by Georgie Piper

Hosted on Acast. His first love is theatre because he relishes the link that gives him to his audience, he became an actor because one of his teachers told him he couldn't, his career has been "an act of contrary revenge" he says. He's coming to The Stables in 2023 to run workshops for actors – he loves to teach.
