In this episode I spoke to Spurs legend Micky Hazard mostly about his return to Spurs and brief second spell at White Hart Lane in the 90s. Micky is most synonymous with the 80s where he enjoyed a glittering career as part of the glory team that won 2 FA Cups and the UEFA Cup, but as he explains he was sold to Chelsea in 1985 very much against his wishes.

Micky was desperate to return 'home' but had to wait 8 years util his great friend Ossie Ardiles, now Spurs manager re-signed him. He returned to a very different club from the one he left but there was no lack of drama. We endured a terrible run of results and found ourselves in a relegation dogfight and Micky discussed why that happened. He, like us, then enjoyed the euphoria of Jurgen Klinsmann's shock arrival in Summer 94.

Listen now to hear Micky's take on:

Attending the 1991 FA Cup parade (as a Chelsea player!)

Relegation with Chelsea

Being coached by Ossie and Glenn Hoddle at Swindon

Returning to Spurs and the politically charged situation at the club in 93

Surviving relegation in '94

Klinsmann's arrival

Archibald x Crooks v Teddy x Klinsmann

Micky is one of 83 players to have appeared for us in the 80s and 109 who played for Spurs in the 90s.

From Teddy shushing the Gallowgate to 7-goal hammerings I'll remind you of visits to Newcastle in the 90s. There were 8 games which include 1 win, 3 draws and 4 defeats. in this bonus episode I reflect on some of the magic, mayhem and mediocrity of those games. If you're on your way to St James' Park and now on your way home and you've seen a ball kicked you've done better than I did!

At the end I'll play you around 5 minutes audio of a new episode I've just recorded with a Newcastle fan in which we looked at both clubs respective 90s journeys told through the prism of 5 fixtures between the two clubs. Perhaps the most significant Spurs result since winning the UEFA Cup in 1984?

For this episode I was joined by Nayim and Daniel Wynne to look back at a glorious afternoon as we overcame all odds to stuff Arsenal and reach the FA Cup Final. With views from the pitch, the dugout and the stands relive the jeopardy of the first ever North London Derby in an FA Cup SF, Gazza's heroics, Samways off the ball runs and Barry Davies' immortal commentary.

This is the game that provided the goal that gave us the line for the title of this podcast and my first book!

Relive Spurs' 90s journey in my book (also titled) Is Gascoigne Going To Have a Crack?

Spurs were perennial South East Counties Champions and won the prestigious FA Youth Cup in 1990. Top goalscorer and star-player was Anthony Potts who scored in the final and was soon offered a pro-contract where he hoped to feature in the first team, win trophies at White Hart Lane and enjoy a successful career for club and country. However, serious injury wrecked his intended trajectory. Tony wrote his own memoir - Losing My Spurs - and in this interview he speaks articulately about his experiences.
