David Scott Eccleston. Scotty, to his family, but Dave in school. He was athletic, artistic, and outgoing. He was looking forward to college, having already earned a scholarship before the first semester of high school was over.

Then he was dead, and the circus that followed his murder completely overshadowed his life.

He mattered, but aside from the things I know, from my friends and the grapevine that stretched the 45 minutes or so from New Berlin to my hometown, it is nearly impossible to fill out more of the blanks in his life. So even in this episode, his life is lost in the haze of rumor and assumption and violence.

Regardless, whether you wanted it or not, here you go: my concerns about sentencing and incarceration, my thoughts on what we should change first in the criminal justice system, and why this whole damn episode leaves me more optimistic than I have felt in a really long time. 038 -- Yin and Yang -- The Case of Rodney Alcala, with Roseanne from Killafornia Dreaming

This episode is different for me, in several ways.

For one, it has not one, but two disclaimers. The first is done by Allyson from Dumb and Busted, and she did a lovely job. The second was my own compulsion, because the episode goes into much more graphic and specific details of a serial rapist and murderer's crimes than I typically include.

For another, about half of it is scripted, and I never script anymore. It stresses me out. But I was helped -- and this is the next big exciting difference -- by the incomparable Roseanne, from Killafornia Dreaming. She wrote the first half, and I mostly stuck to it without getting distracted or perfectionistic!

The second half is where we go entirely off-script, and we land in places that are both familiar and completely unexpected.

Buckle in, kids. It's a wild ride.

AA is considered by many to be the ideal treatment approach for alcoholism, of all types, and really for substance abuse, in all forms.

If you've put up with me for this long, you may not be shocked to learn that I don't believe there are many catch-alls in the world. Whether it's treatment methodology, blanket statements, or mindsets. Or pants.

I was #blessed to be joined by Kim (from People Are Wild) and Karla* (from Go Postal), for a very honest, vulnerable and genuine conversation about what it means to experience alcoholism, as a woman, and what it means to try to pursue help.

This is the first time I have deliberately covered the same topic more than once, and yet there is sadly little overlap between Episode 22 and this one. There's just too much to say, and too many ways to say it.

I was so lucky, recently, to be able to go on a two-week adventure around the British Isles with my husband and two older kids.

I was extra-lucky to be able to stay a night in Dublin, during which Sinead, from the Mens Rea podcast, was gracious enough to show us a glimpse of the city, take us to dinner and a show, and spend a few hours with me... first recording this conversation, then hanging out at the PantiBar. Sinead hosts one of the first podcasts I ever listened to, and she is fully aware of just how fabulous her voice is -- almost as amazing as the rest of her.

So sit back and relax while Sinead and I (joined by Emily!) get riled up over the pedophile priest scandals on both sides of the Atlantic, ponder the existance of giraffes, narwhals and Oprah, and banter in a wildly inappropriate manner.

Sometimes the most structured and predictable situations can suddenly go unpredictably off-script, in the very best ways.

Laura and I started off this episode by following a literal script about Frederick Baer, who committed a truly horrible pair of murders while coming off a meth binge, and we ended up immersed in a very real conversation about what that could possibly have to do with a mother and grandmother facing theft charges. It went deep, in a beautiful way.

I think we're often seen as cynical, sarcastic, potentially intrusive, thick-skinned, addicted to tragedy porn... but the truth is, we're a creative, vulnerable, diverse, mostly well-intentioned group of people who feel just as driven to create as a painter or a sculptor.

This becomes less cerebral and more horrific when the topic isn't a safe, high-level cerebral exercise, but instead a truly horrific and upsetting case of child abuse. We don't go into a ton of detail here, but it's enough for you to get the picture. Concepts like waste and value aren't just for the classroom.

I think most podcasts start out as little hobbies, and then they can grow, sometimes without us even realizing it's happening. Shane Waters, of the Out of the Shadows podcast, has been doing this a lot longer than I have, so I'll let him decide exactly where he falls on that spectrum. I kind of suspect that, just lately, what it all means to him might have changed, seeing as how he has found a way to pull national attention to a previously ignored SERIAL KILLER. Kind of a big deal, you know?He might argue that he's just one piece of the puzzle, and it's true that a high school sociology class and an inspirational teacher helped aim that light that Shane first started shining. But he's one of the nicest people I have ever met, so I'm not sure he would willingly admit just how important his efforts have been.Come for the splashy, serial killer intensity. 016 -- Floating Down the River Cortisol on the Isle of Freakout -- anxiety, phobia, panic, Generalized Anxiety Disorder

Anxiety is what happens when your nerves give the finger to your sense of logic.

Somehow that felt profound to me, during the editing process. I don't know. I spent more time with this episode -- living it, then overthinking it, then editing, blah blah -- than any previous one. I'm losing perspective.

But I know just how common, just how pervasive, just how absolutely miserable anxiety is, and in this episode, many of my friends, fellow podcasters and listeners chimed in to prove it. I opted not to share anyone's name, because somehow that sense of anonymity felt more profound, too. Feel free to identify yourself, if so inclined. I'm not opposed to it, I just wanted to be able to share everyone's story in the same way. (Except for the last guest. That's my husband. Isn't he a sweetheart?)

I was heading up to face my biggest, nastiest, snarliest, scariest fear -- the dentist, because while I do take it the extra mile, I couldn't be bothered to find a unique or uncommon phobia -- and I asked people to share their anxieties, too. And almost 20 people were brave and open enough to do so. Freaking badass.

So, settle in, and listen to what happens to create anxiety, what makes people anxious, and what we can maybe do (plus what we shouldn't bother doing) to make it better.

013 -- EmilyCheese -- The Disappearance of Las Holandesas

She's baaaack...

Emily joined me again, this time to stay a bit less bizarre and discuss a mysterious double disappearance in the Panamanian rainforest. Kris Kremers and Lisanne Froon were Dutch women in their early 20s, starting an extended stay in Panama to study Spanish and do volunteer work. They left for what should have been a short walk in the woods, but never returned.

It's a case that has captured Emily's attention, imagination, conspiracy-theory neurons, etc. So we chat about it, as well as the inevitable tangents such as how adding the word "cheese" to the end of any noun suddenly creates a really gross concept (don't bother practicing it, we demonstrate it during the episode... a lot) and the concept of really huge, scary squirrels. Emily also creates a lovely motivational quote, which will be up on my merch site soon.

We get goofy at times, but we know that this is a real-world case and involves real-world pain. Our hearts ache for the Froon and Kremers families, the host family, and the rest of those hurt by the girls' loss.

In my first episode, I was fortunate enough to share the story of a close friend, as well as that of another domestic violence survivor, in an effort to demonstrate why people might stay in a hurtful relationship and how lives can change based on one or two small decisions.

This time, I'm looking a bit more at the accumulation of experiences and culture and social expectations, and how those all build to create long-term, durable relationships that take belittlement and violence for granted. My guest in this episode has a long-term view and can describe the atmosphere better than I can, both at large and within the family... because she's my grandmother. My mother appears in Episode 8, and now you'll hear: my grandmother is pretty badass, too.

I really, really didn't think I would ever get this episode out to you all. Like, really. First of all, it's the result of a crossover with Billy & Erica, from Martinis and the Macabre, and I was so freaking fangirl-y the whole time that I wasn't sure I'd say a thing that made sense.Then, there's the fact that I'm still crap at the whole sound editing thing, so this is the best I could do.

THEN, while I was in the process of trying to edit it in time to coincide with their release, my brain decided to explode. No, like, literally, I started feeling really, really unwell, so I made it up two flights of stairs just in time to let my husband know that I was feeling Really Gross, and I dropped with a grand mal seizure.

Yeah.

So I can't re-narrate any of my stuff, because I bit my tongue bad enough that, five days later, I still don't have SSSS-sounds. Or a bunch of others.

You know that thing where you try to make sense of a topic, and it simply refuses to click?

I have that about certain corners of the internet, specifically the weird ones where creepypasta, ARGs and Cursed Images are formed.

I also have that about teenagers.

So what better way to try to make sense of it all than to combine those things, by asking my 17-year-old daughter to join me and explain her mysterious online life?? I'm not sure I succeed in applying rational thought to much here, but I manage to sneak in a word about the Slenderman assault in Wisconsin, and groupthink, and even the Salem Witch Hysteria.

I feel a little... mush-brained... after editing this one, but I hope it makes sense to one or two of you out there. There are bigger, more organized things are in the works, but I didn't want you to have to wait for those things.

Domestic violence is an uncomfortable, scary topic. For my first episode, I focused on the survivor's story, because my friend was brave and generous enough to share her story. Later on, I'll spend a little time inside an abuser's head.
