JayCee draws inspiration from street art and graffiti, using a combination of spray paints and acrylics to celebrate the fusion of technology with Indigenous culture, primarily in paintings and murals. Together, they talk about why it’s important for arts, creativity, and swag to have a permanent place in the movement; JayCee’s artist journey; and specifically why NDN has a store to put out art and messaging into the world. “The products on the NDN store aren’t just non-profit swag, it's art that has grown out of struggle, organizing and movement work.”

Protect Pe’sla

Nick Tilsen, Founder & CEO of NDN Collective, sits down with Taylor Gunhammer, local organizer, to discuss the attack on Pe’sla, a sacred site for many tribes in the Black Hills region. Local company Pete Lien & Sons (PLS) will be doing exploratory drilling, looking for graphite. This drilling will destroy sacred land and risk contaminating the water that many in the region depend on.

CALLS TO ACTION:

☎️Call the Forest Service at (605) 343-1567 to demand they rescind the permit for Pe’sla drilling and the decision to grant a Categorical Exclusion (CE) for their exploratory drilling permit. They have no right to violate our rights, declare Indigenous culture an acceptable loss, cut us out of the process, or endanger the drinking water of thousands of people and Ellsworth Air force Base. Call the US Forest Service and tell them to leave Pe’sla alone!!

Silencing a Movement Leader: Nick Tilsen’s Fight for Justice

To wrap our 2025 season, we're diving into what is happening in Alaska. How Indigenous people in Alaska are fighting to protect the ecological biodiversity, their subsistence rights, wildlife, and to keep minerals in the ground. Historically roads being built in Alaska have been the ways in which they've exploited the people and the land. One current project being proposed is Ambler Road, over 200 miles of road, in one of the most prescient lands in the world. We sat down with Ricko DeWilde, Diloola Erickson, Naawéiyaa Tagaban who've come all the way from Alaska to share their story of organizing and resistance to protect their way of life.

He Sapa LANDBACK

In 1980, the Supreme Court ruled that the stealing of the Black Hills was one of the most gross violations of the Constitution in US history. The POW!-er of Storytelling

Storytelling is the backbone of our movement. In this episode, Nick Tilsen sits down with writer and comedian Joey Clift to talk about how important it is to use narrative and storytelling as a mechanism to catalyse the LANDBACK movement, the power of modern-day representation, and Joey's upcoming short animation film, "Pow!."

Pow! is an animated short film about Jake, a young Native American kid scrambling to charge his dying video game console at a bustling Coastal Salish intertribal powwow, where he learns that loving video games and loving your culture aren't mutually exclusive. Written and Directed by Joey Clift (Cowlitz), made by a largely Indigenous team and with an all-Native voice cast. Pow! is a comedic love letter to the communities that raised us.

Joey Clift is a Los Angeles-based comedian, Emmy and Peabody-nominated writer, and an enrolled member of the Cowlitz Indian Tribe. Growing up, Joey aspired to become a local TV weatherperson because he didn't see Native American comedians on screen and thought a career in comedy was off-limits to him. He has since proven otherwise, writing for acclaimed series like Spirit Rangers (Netflix), Molly of Denali (PBS), and Paw Patrol (Nickelodeon).

Joey is the creator of Gone Native, a Comedy Central Digital series about microaggressions Native folks often experience, and his comedy has been featured everywhere from Dropout to The Smithsonian Museum.

Who knew nuns were riding for LandBack!

In Season 3, Episode 6 Nick Tilsen is joined by Brittany Koteles, Executive Director of Land Justice Futures. This organization helps religious land owners pursue land justice – shifting the narrative of land as a commodity to one of repair, restoration, and reciprocity. Land Justice Futures works closely with Christian communities and Catholic sisters to move toward repair.

According to Land Justice Future, the Catholic Church is the world's largest private landowner, with land on every continent, in every country across the globe. In this conversation, Nick and Brittany talk about what LANDBACK means to the Catholic church, what organizing nuns is like, and the very first Catholic land return in history. The Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration will return two acres of lakefront property to the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa on October 31, 2025. In this episode, Nick sits down with three amazing leaders of the National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition (NABS). NABS is conducting an oral history project documenting the stories of boarding school survivors for the Library of Congress.

The work of NABS includes development and implementation of a national strategy to increase public awareness and cultivate healing for the traumas experienced by those who attended these schools, their families and communities.

Sacred Storm Buffalo, a community-rooted and culturally grounded workforce development enterprise of the nonprofit Wambli Ska Okolakiciye, is dedicated to restoring strength, purpose, and connection for Native people and families through the art and discipline of Indigenous meat processing. The training and production center—opened last year with support from a $1.6 million investment through NDN Collective's Indigenous-designed power-building loans—serves as a living blueprint for food sovereignty and self-determined economic renewal.

Black and Indigenous Solidarity

On this final episode of season 2, Nick Tilsen talks with Jason Sole to discuss what being an abolitionist means, the origins of FTP, how the LANDBACK movement and Black Liberation are required for our collective liberation, and that Black and Indigenous solidarity is a practice that we need to build within our movements.

ABOUT JASON SOLE: Jason, formerly incarcerated, is an abolitionist. He has been a criminal justice educator for over 12 years and has been a national restorative justice trainer since 2008, In 2019, he received the John Legend "Can't Just Preach" award for his work to abolish prisons. In addition, Jason is the co-founder of the Humanize My Hoodie Movement in which he challenges threat perceptions about Black people through clothing, art exhibitions, documentary screenings, and workshops.

Ocean Back

In this episode, Nick Tilsen visits with longtime mentor Dune Lankard, who shares stories and knowledge from his fight to protect his homelands in southcentral Alaska. From protecting millions of acres, to standing up for the bears, to fighting climate change while feeding the people with kelp, Dune shows what it means when he says, "ocean back." As Dune says, "if it's not regenerative then just don't do it."

Dune Lankard, Eyak Athabaskan of the Eagle Clan from Cordova, Alaska, has been fighting to protect his homelands in the Prince William Sound and the Copper River Delta his entire life. He waged successful battles in protecting over a million acres in the Copper River Delta, was lifted up by Times Magazines as one of the Heroes of the Planet, selected by Asoka as one of the world's leading social entrepreneurs, won numerous awards for this work, and has mentored many in this movement just by being a warrior fighting for mother earth. His work has influenced Nick, many we work with, and the creation of NDN Collective.

Madonna Thunder Hawk: a Matriarch of the Movement

In this first episode of LANDBACK FOR THE PEOPLE, Nick Tilsen sits at the table with matriarch Madonna Thunder Hawk (Oohenumpa Lakota). Madonna jokingly calls herself the Forest Gump of Indigenous resistance, since, over the last 55 years, she's been at almost every focal point in the fight for Indigenous liberation. Through numerous decades of resistance efforts, from the occupation of Mount Rushmore in 1971 and the takeover of the BIA headquarters in 1972, to the siege at Wounded Knee in 1973 and unforgettably Standing Rock in 2016, Madonna exemplifies what it means to be a true Warrior Woman.

Nick and Madonna lay bare how generations of Indigenous people have met across politics and places for the sake of LANDBACK, revealing moments in the movement that were unimaginable. In this conversation, we are reminded of the blood and ancestral memory of our deep connection to land and water, inheriting the movement knowledge and stories of those before us in preparation for a liberated future.
