English, Lesson 76 Part 20 Chapter 1

Pablo had planned his Christmas alone and was getting ready. He already knew it was not a good time to waste time

watching lots of bad news and had prepared to be busy.

He had charged his phone and ordered a new charger for his old iPad to arrive in the new year.

He liked to use that for his exercise videos, sometimes placing

it high on a stool when he was doing stretches.

He wanted to do some warm-up exercises and warm down stretches

with videos from YouTube when he was home alone over the holidays.

Sometimes he just used his laptop or phone.

He made time to talk with Silvia and some other neighbors he liked at a distance.

He also made time to wave to people he knew on the street.

He did this in the mornings very early when he went for a good walk early in the morning.

A massive winter storm was coming, and he knew other people

would be lonely also, so he liked to wave or chat at a distance

when he could.

He knew it made him and other people feel good.

He had also found some old cards and gave some to people who lived alone as happy new Year cards.

But he would keep Mr. Pickering's cards to sell.

He had already got some good food, vegetables, and fruits.

For New Year's Eve, he was planning a kitchen challenge

and cooking something he had never cooked before.

Pablo had some extra cans of soup and vegetables he took

to the local food back in his neighborhood.

He also made a small donation on a list of local food banks

across the US at feeding america .org

If the Christmas storm became terrible in January,

he would sort through some old photos and videos.

He planned to move them into separate folders on his old laptop.

Then later carefully onto a drive and get organized into the new year.

He might even update his CV and maybe his LinkedIn profile

but would do that last.

Pablo wanted to wish everyone a happy new year and had a

list of people in English to message the new year

Wow, Pablo thought he was going to be so busy, he

hoped he had time for a few naps in the afternoons.

Pablo knew it would also be a challenge in isolation over the Christmas and new year time.

Pablo knew he not a good speller in either language.

Mr. Anderson said he did not have to know how to spell to speak English.

But if he kept writing, the spelling would slowly become more and more familiar over time,

Pablo glanced up at himself in the bathroom mirror his thick black curly hair looked unusually wild today, he thought as then looked back at Sharron in the mirror.

Sharron had dried the last of the tears from her eyes leaving black dabs on her cheeks from the cheaper makeup she decided to wear today. 

Sharron had been crying a few times now on her most recent visits to help Pablo around the house since he had broken his arm Pablo thought to himself looking up at her. 

Pablo knew the course Sharron was doing hard forced her to look carefully at her life story. 

He knew this was painful.

Sharron had shared a lot about her personal life with Pablo. 

Pablo was so pleased Sharron had chosen to help him shortly after the accident.

He had met Sharron at the hospital where she volunteered.

He also knew Sharron had not had such an easy life, and she was addicted to her phone and cigarettes among other things he had begun to think.

Sharron was fighting hard to give these things up, and she had told him many funny stories, of her life while she was going through this her latest self-help course.

Sharron looked back at Pablo in the bathroom mirror, she knew he was going crazy stuck in the house and needed more activities to keep his mind active until he could go back outside.

Sharron had not quite stopped, crying.

By the time she appeared in the bathroom doorway looking for Pablo she could gently hold back the last of the tears.

Pablo who was standing over the sink, looked up and smiled.

A long thick line of sweat had poured down Pablo's back as it had been an unusually hot and humid night.

He was so pleased she had come over as he had not left the house now for well over a week.

He handed Sharron the box of tissues from the left-hand side of the sink.

She gently pulled three tissues from the box and blew her nose.

“Oh, Pablo!,” Sharron said.

“I must look such a mess to you,” as she leaned forward-looking into the bathroom mirror.

“No, no not at all,” Pablo said in perfect English.

Pablo is learning fast Sharron thought to herself as she sniffed away the last of her tears.

Pablo laughed and smiled.

“Ok, maybe you can teach me one of your hospital tricks”, Pablo said winking at Sharron.

Pablo then carefully tried to grab the soap using his left hand slowly like a robot as this arm was still in plaster from the accident.

“Never, no never in a million years”, Sharron said throwing her head back dramatically as if she held some secret she would never share.

What are your “New Year’s” resolutions?

Will you make a “New Year’s” resolution?

Did you have “New Year’s” resolutions last year?

And will you make a “New Year’s” resolutions this year?

These are just some of the questions in today's lesson.

One of my “New Year’s” resolutions for this coming year is to tell a story.

A story that came to mind one day when I was on my bike when I was riding alongside the river.

It's a story about someone living in a new city and the things he learns about the world around him

And another resolution I have for the coming year is to learn faster and to Work Smarter, Not Harder

Do you know what it means to Work Smarter, Not Harder?

So one example of Working Smarter, Not Harder could be

Instead of writing long emails, sometimes it's better to pick up the phone

So, this might work for some people but it can be a challenge if you are learning English

And depending on your level of English this might not always be the best option for you

So in this is the case you might change that idea into another idea such as

to write smaller emails not longer ones so you can improve your English by writing more emails faster

about more subjects so you can learn faster by improving the range of subjects you can write and learn about.

One of my goals also In the future is to Automate more tasks.

This will reduce the number of decisions I have to make throughout the day.

So, what tasks could I automate I wonder?

I know.

I could automate the way I email some of our English language students, here at learn English with Cullen.

If I made a system, then we could send and receive emails, more automatically to help our students.

Then I could then spend more time creating my story.

That can then help more of our students in a faster way, so I could create a series of podcasts that go into an audio book.

and I could create a free and a paid audio book version of the story so this could pay for more of free and a paid story.

Audio books that could help more and more students at different levels at Learn English with Cullen.

Or on a CD?

Or on a gramophone?

So in today's lesson, we are using some images that tell us something about music

Let's look at the first image here of the three men on stage

What music might they be playing?

What music might they be playing, and why do you think this is the genre or kind of music they are playing? And in the third image

What music might he be playing?

And in the fourth image

What music might she be playing?

This is a great way to make a guess as we can't hear the music

We are adding a new level to help you try and remember words using images.

The new level is called Level 4

And in level 4 of our lesson, there will be no words in the video lesson to look at

There will only be images or photos.

So let's go back over the levels again.

Level 1 is our slow speaking class. Level 1 is the first lesson that comes out in every series of lessons. Level 2 is our faster speaking class. Level 2 is the second class repeating the same words at a faster speed. Level 3 is the lesson where you can your test your English. By filling in the answers in the form below this lesson or the link if you cannot see the form.

Level 3 is our fastest speaking class. Level 3 is at the same speed as a regular native English speaker.

Level 4 is also at the same speed as a regular native English speaker, but the video in this lesson will have no written words to read in the video.

So in lesson 4, you can also test your memory by listening to the words spoken and seeing the images.

With no text and just the images, this will to help improve your memory of the words spoken
