S4E05 - The Heiress (1949)

For this episode, we go way back to 1949 with William Wyler's "The Heiress," starring Olivia de Havilland in her Academy Award-winning performance in one heck of a movie. We gush over her brilliant performance, marvel at Ralph Richardson's portrayal of a particularly dastardly father, and absolutely SWOON over the delicious Montgomery Clift. We then dive into the value of a film with an ambiguous ending, and we wrap it up with Graham asking Ashley a handful of fun media-centered questions.

Tori Spelling plays the titular character Laurel -- a senior in college, star of her track team, a real whiz in the classroom -- as she falls in love with sexy stranger Kevin. But when Kevin's revealed to be the killer from the opening salvo of this "film", our dear Tori is in for a wild ride of relationship abuse, stalking, and all sorts of dangerous insanity. How many people are killed in this movie? What does this film and Friday the 13th have in common? WILL TORI SLEEP WITH DANGER? You'll just have to listen and find out! Then, we host our second annual LMIY Awards, going through our entire 15-episodes of season 3 to choose Best Supporting Actor and Actress, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Director, Best Actor and Actress, Best Picture, and, of course, bestow our honorary Tori Spelling Award for the year. There are definitely some surprises and upsets in this awards season, not the least of all when Graham insists on granting himself an award as well :) (all the podcasters got awards, don't worry). How about you cast relative unknowns in lead roles and get them started with a 1/2 finished script that makes ZERO sense, and only just barely connects to its source material? YES, THIS MOVIE IS GOD AWFUL...but it has earned its cult status over the past almost forty years...so join us as Ashley introduces Katie to a beloved childhood favorite, and the final entry in our SEQUEL SENSATION theme -- 1982's Grease 2. Starring Michelle Pfeiffer in her first leading role, this film picks up two years after Olivia Newton John and John Travolta hand jived their way through Rydell High -- focusing on our NEW CLASS of Pink Ladies and T-Birds. Michelle plays Stephanie, the leader of the Pink Ladies who is just so OVER dating T-Birds and is looking for a new man...a "cool rider". Enter new kid in town, Michael Carrington (played by Maxwell Caulfield, aka REX MANNING) -- Australian Sandy's cousin from the original film, although he is inexplicably British. He sets his sights on winning Stephanie's heart by learning everything there is to learn about motorcyclin' - and takes on a secret persona as said "cool rider". This film then gets nuts with wacky songs (hello, even if you hate this film, the song "Reproduction" is a must) insane dance numbers, and an almost 2 hour runtime. We also discuss how this film affected Ashley's entire fashion aesthetic all throughout her life, the gang's favorite musicals, a new mini-Let Me Introduce You, and a preview of our SEASON FINALE in 2 weeks. So put on your motorcycle hat and enjoy one of our more divisive episodes - 'cuz come on, we've got a rep to protect!

Starring a venerable who's who of Brittan's finest actors, including Hugh Grant (who you obv know), Imelda Staunton (Harry Potter's Dolores Umbridge), Julie Walters (Harry Potter's Mrs. Weasley), Ben Whishaw (James Bond's Q), Jim Broadbent< Jessica Hynes, Brendan Gleason AND SO MANY MORE...this is truly a children's film filled with joy, prestige, beauty and challenge. Not often do all 3 of your podcasters agree on a film, but all three completely fell in love with every aspect of this treasure. This film is a seminal work in the canon of Jim Henson, and showcases some of the amazing things that puppetry can do on film...from something as tiny as a wee little worm who offers you tea with the missus, to a swamp filled with buttholes, or even a collection of weird bird fire things who switch arms and legs and heads (while singing). And who better to introduce us to this film (other than Graham, well-known Henson lover) but our special guest -- actor, story animator, former Pixar employee and theater kid to the bone (and obv. friend of the pod) Mr. Kyle McDaniel! Kyle lures your favorite podcasters in with tales of the Goblin King aka David Bowie, reading hidden clues around set design and dress, the beauty of Jennifer Connelly, and why his favorite character in all of this fantasy madness is Hoggle. In a film that bases its story on how much something means to you once its gone, we willingly get lost in the joyful maze that is Labyrinth. S3E10 - An Affair to Remember

It's not often we visit the 1950s, but for Ashley's pick in our judgement-free theme (we promise), EXCUSE ME, WHAT?! -- films we cannot believe the others have seen -- we take a romantic trip on an Italian cruise, right into the hearts of Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr in 1957's An Affair to Remember. Our two main characters fall in love (OBV) on a cruise ship while involved with other people, so they give themselves six months to sort their lives out and promise to meet on the closest thing to heaven, the Empire State Building. But then a HORRIBLE ACCIDENT...and not to get emotional, but Graham was OVERWHELMED with joy for this movie. Katie...well, you'll just have to listen to find out. Your three favorite podcasters also discuss the fashion, the inspired improvisational style of acting in this film, and another Mini-Let Me Introduce You. We're welcoming the new year with shame!! Enter our newest theme, Excuse me, WHAT?! Films we just CAN'T BELIEVE you haven't seen. And we're starting with one of our WHITE WHALES, the 1988 classic romantic BUSINESS WOMAN COMEDY, Working Girl. This is the one movie that started the whole podcast idea, and a film Graham holds so dear to his heart that he was terrified of showing it to Ashley and Katie. Starring the gorgeous Melanie Griffith, the delicious Harrison Ford, a pitch-perfect-bitch Sigourney Weaver, and the ethereal Joan Cusack, this film follows Staten Islander Tess McGill as works her way through lethal, 1980s Wall Street...aiming to be more than "just a secretary." When her seemingly supportive boss breaks her leg on a ski trip, Tess discovers her superior was aiming to undercut her talent and steal her idea for a deal. So Tes cons her way into a meeting with the lovely Jack Trainer to make an even lovelier partnership, both on and off the trading floor. Directed by Mike Nichols, this was truly enjoyable for everyone...so while your favorite podcasters might not be steak, you CAN order this podcast right into your ears! S3E7 - Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) and Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (with Justin Krohn)

The podcast which you are about to listen to is an account of the tragedy which befell a group of three best friends, in particular Ashely Krohn and her older brother, (and our special guest) Justin. It is all the more tragic in that they were young(ish). But, had they lived very, very long lives, they could not have expected nor would they have wished to view as much of the mad and macabre as they were to watch on film that day. For them an idyllic winter movie double-feature became a nightmare. The events of that viewing were to lead to the discovery of two of the most bizarre due of films in the annals of American history. For our final installment in our SIBLINGS theme, we are honored to welcome film and television editor, Ashley's brother Justin to the pod, as he introduces Graham and Katie to 1974's Texas Chainsaw Massacre and it's abysmal sequel, 1986's Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. Starting with the horror film that gives a new meaning to the word "disturbing", the original classic introduced audiences to slasher icon Leatherface as we do a deep dive into the wonderful world of the horror genre. Then we take a HARD LEFT to discuss the camp, 80s coke-fueled insanity that is the Dennis Hopper-lead sequel where Leatherface makes his return, along with the rest of his revolting family. We chat a bit about what a film/tv editor does, some of Justin's past credits, and what it was like in the Krohn household when Ashley was FORCED to view one of the most beautiful pieces of cinema as a mere preteen (note: it was not either of these two movies). So rev up the chainsaw, try not to eat any chili beforehand, and pull up a seat at our dinner table for our last episode of 2022!

Ever wonder why Graham is the way he is (aka utterly perfect?) Well, your favorite podcasters invite his older sister Stephanie on to our show to talk about the very movie that shaped them as kids (them, and most likely no one else, based on the box office) -- as the two Veths introduce Katie and Ashley to the WONDER that is 1989's Teen Witch. Drama, romance, comedy, musical, fantasy...this movie has it all! Starring Robin Lively as high school "nerd" Louise who, upon her 16th birthday, develops special witch powers! And who better to welcome her into her coven than pint-sized powerhouse, Zelda Rubenstein -- an ersatz fairy godmother if there ever was one. Will Louise cast a spell to make her (and Graham's) crush Brad (played by Dan Gauthier) fall in lovewith her? Or perhaps take on the essence of a pop star to become the most popular girl in school? Or maybe she just turns her little brother (brought to magical life by Joshua John Miller) into a dog. Who knows what's possible in this mishmash of razzle dazzle! We also dive into some of the Veth family childhood favorites, as well as Stephanie's 9 year old daughter's very insightful opinions on her mom and uncle's film tastes. Could this movie be any more supersonic, idiotic, disconnecting, not respecting? Who would really ever wanna go and TOP THAT?

There are those in our lives who know us through thick and thin...who get our dumb senses of humor (because hey, they have the exact same ones) and laugh at the same ridiculous things you did when you were 10 years old. They grew up on the same crap, watched the same movies (whether they wanted to or not) and have the same pop culture blind spots...they're OUR SIBLINGS! So to kick off a theme very close to our hearts, we're starting with Katie's brother Zak, and introducing a seminal work of the 1990s -- a movie that stayed true to their parents ignoring film ratings, a real Huckelberry, 1993's Tombstone. With an all-star cast (hello Kurt Russell, Bill PAXTON (not Pullman!!), Sam Elliott, and of course, the incredible Val Kilmer) this post-Unforgiven western was a STAPLE (Stable? get it? it's a horse joke.) in the Kubert household. So if you, dear listener, were ever interested in why Katie gravitates towards the movies she does, get the inside scoop from the man who was there at the beginning, and has the same weird sense of film taste that she does (more action! more violence!). It's the spooky season, and for you, dear listeners...this is no TRICK, we have a TREAT just for you...after two full seasons where Katie vamped about practical Special Effects for film and television, we thought we'd bring in a PRO to introduce your favorite podcasters to the ins and outs of prosthetic make up, mold making, casting, and the art behind making things creepy...so we're honored and humbled to have SFX artist Jeremy Selenfriend, owner of Monster In My Closet SFX shop, on the show to introduce us to a film that scared HIM as a kid...the 1992 Clive Barker classic, Candyman. Jeremy is known for his Emmy-nominated work on Boardwalk Empire, and has also worked on a million other well-known projects like The Blacklist, Men in Black III, Gotham, Elementary, Royal Pains, Orange is the New Black, Amazing Spider-Man 2, Daredevil, The Punisher, Jessica Jones, The King of Staten Island and so many more. So won't you JOIN US as he takes the gang into the modern oral folklore of The Candyman on the Near North Side of Chicago...inside a dilapidated housing project known as Cabrini-Green, where a man with a hook for a hand and a chest of bees waits. S3E3 - Nine Months

Ah...the summer of 1995. When Hugh Grant's hair was still floppy, the world was mere moments away from making Divine Brown a household name, Tom Arnold was still considered funny enough to be cast in something, and a wee BU School of Performing Arts '83 graduate was starring in her first Hollywood romantic comedy, the subject of our final BU ALUMS theme, Nine Months. Highlighting the sheer beauty of a very 90s (and oddly homosexual-free) San Francisco, this film follows couple Samuel and Rebecca as they find out they are unexpectedly going to be parents. Samuel, brought to life by the over-the-top performance of Hugh Grant, is a commitment-phobic, selfish child psychologist with a Peter Pan-complex who, ironically, hates kids, and obviously cannot provide his girlfriend Rebecca, played by goddess Julianne Moore, the support she needs as a soon-to-be mother. She finds this support and friendship with new friends Marty and Gail Dwyer (played by an unbearable Tom Arnold and an as-always delightful Joan Cusack), while Samuel seeks advice and comfort from fellow playboy and friend, Sean Fletcher (a role Jeff Goldblum excels at). We've got SOME THOUGHTS on this movie, and while it might be a glorious example of redhead representation (which our podcaster Ashley is always in great support of) it's...not really great anywhere else. OH, did we mention Robin Williams is also in this film? Who needs an enema? No, uh, a pedicure? No wait, an epitaph? IT'S EPIDURAL, ASSHOLE, FOR OUR LAST FILM FROM BU ALUMS!

S3E2 - The Long Kiss Goodnight

Graham continues our theme of FILMS FROM BU ALUMS with a CFA '79 Graduate KNOWN for her action roles...or rather...just the one. Geena Davis, a woman for the people, tried her best to advance female action stars with her role as Samantha Caine in 1996's action/crime/spy Thriller, The Long Kiss Goodnight. Written by action industry stalwart Shane Black (a script purchased for a record breaking $4 mil), the story opens with an idyllic suburban mother and teacher, Samantha -- a woman who woke up on a New Jersey beach 8 years ago with no memory and pregnant with her daughter, Caitlin. After a very lovely and Hallmark-worthy Christmas party, Samantha is injured in a car crash -- a crash which stirs up memories of her past, and memories of a blonde, badass smoker named Charly, Samantha's alter-identity. Meanwhile, an incomparable and charming Samuel L. Jackson plays private detective Mich Hennessy, a man Samantha hired to uncover her past, and a man who winds up getting the crap kicked out of him mercilessly this entire film. Mitch and Sam team up with Charly's old boss (played by Brian Cox) to uncover a secret plot between the CIA and an organization known as Deadalus -- former villains Charley was investigating before her self-induced amnesia, led by dreamy Craig Bierko (another BU attende!). So join your favorite BU alum podcasters here as we discuss Queen Geena's valiant attempt to forward women in the action genre, and how we think that whatever Samantha's memory is attempting to dislodge, much like Brian Cox's dog who has been licking its asshole for the past hour), is either gone for good, or there to stay. Suprisingly, this is a horror film that Graham and Ashley actually wind up liking!! But due to the horrible ending, the poor explination of the book's theme and the absolutely gut-wrenching death of Sam the dog, none of us will be revisiting this film any time soon. Episode 13 - Mixed Nuts

It's our (Holiday) Season Finale! Ashley introduces Graham and Katie to the overly-stuffed 1994 film, Mixed Nuts, telling the story of a ragtag group of unlikely characters connected to the crisis hotline Lifesavers on one crazy Christmas Eve. Starring a post-Father of the Bride: Part One Steve Martin, comedy goddess Madeline Kahn, Rita Wilson, Rob Reiner, Anthony LaPaglia, Juliette Lewis, Adam Sandler, Robert Klein, and comedy n00bs (at the time) Parker Posey and Jon Stewart (as well as Liev Schreiber in his first film role), this is the first collaboration from sister-team Nora and Delia Ephron, released immediately after the romantic juggernaut, Sleepless in Seattle. But it just goes to show that stacking a film with that much talent can lend to some insanely wacky jokes before becoming completely suffocating. But all you need to remember is that in every pothole...there is hope!

One of the original slasher pics, the inspiration for Halloween, with innovative camera work in a pre-steadi-cam era and a killer cast, Katie finds a way to bring horror to the holidays. Starring a slew of actors who would go on to have extremely successful careers in horror, this innovative (for the time) story follows a group of sorority girls on Christmas Eve as they start getting disturbing phone calls from a deranged lunatic, and are then swiftly met with an icy end. With horror mainstays Margo Kidder (who would follow this film with The Amityville Horror), Keir Duella (who had been in 2001: A Space Odyssey six years prior), John Saxon (best known for A Nightmare on Elm St.), Art Hinkle (who went on to play a role in Invasion of the Body Snatchers) as well as comedic ingenue Andrea Martin (My Big Fat Greek Wedding), this is one horror film that ALL THE PODCASTERS WOUND UP LOVING. So make sure your halls are decked because THE CALL IS COMING FROM INSIDE THE HOUSE.

The iconic comedy duo is out to sell some Christmas trees in Los Angeles, and of course, a giant, ridiculous fight breaks out and destroys everything in sight. Rounding out the trio is Ashley's pick, the 1981 direct-to-video collection, A Walt Disney Christmas. Consisting of six short Disney films, this one showcases a few holiday classics with Mickey, Pluto, Donald (NOT DAFFY, KATIE), Goofy, Chip and Dale, and many others. A great premise with an absolutely horrible execution, this film stars a very "hot at the moment" Luke Wilson, Maya Rudolph, Dax Shepard and a slew of other Mike Judge regulars, and tackles the dumbing down of America 500 years in the future, and how the world's most average man must save the planet. But don't worry, this podcast has electrolytes. It's what plants crave.

With an incredible cast (all at the top of their game during the mid-70s) including Robert Redford, Dustin Hoffman, Jack Warden, Martin Balsam, Hal Holbrook, Jason Robards and Jane Alexander, and written by the incredible William Goldman, it just goes to prove that...IF YOU'RE ON YOUR PHONE DURING A MOVIE YOU WILL MISS IT. Let Me Introduce You is a podcast hosted by Graham Veth, Katie Kubert and Ashley Krohn. We’ve known each other nearly 20 years (starting back in film school) and have stayed close friends ever since.

We know...everything about one another and have far, far too much in common.

Except, our taste in movies. Seriously, there is very little overlap….

Give Graham a rom-com, an 80s comedy with a strong female lead, and a puppet or two, and he's there. Make Ashley laugh, make Ashley cry, just give her movie that makes her think and/or feel something. Katie's the resident horror and sci-fi nerd, give her more of dat gore!

Each week, one of us will introduce the others to one of our favorites. The catch is that one of us has to be seeing it for the first time.

We’ll talk about why that movie is important to us (or why we want to subject the other two to it) and hope and pray the others see it the way we do.

From Troop Beverly Hills to Hellraiser; Clue to Nightmare on Elm Street; Barbarella to Step Up 2: The Streets, no movie is off the table (even if we find it’s not our cup of tea…).
