Liberals and conservatives alike have noticed an obvious “vibe shift” in America over the past several months, specifically since Donald Trump was elected to take back the White House. This shift must be welcomed and celebrated, but there’s still a lot of work ahead of us to defeat woke ideology and reestablish a Christian culture.

On this week’s episode of The Van Maren Show, Jonathon discusses some of the cultural effects of Trump’s second term in office, specifically an increasing interest in the Christian faith. While this sudden interest in Christianity is encouraging, Jonathon explains that it is mainly due to an increasing desire to find deeper spiritual meaning. Many are still not willing to submit to the fullness of the faith with its moral obligations.

Fight to stop UK assisted suicide bill is far from over despite setbacks

Williams emphasized that the bill still needs to pass a third reading after being scrutinized by a parliamentary committee and then pass the House of Lords. But if it passes the third reading, it’s unlikely the House of Lords would vote against it.

Fisher was actually working in Christian radio when he was first introduced to the pro-life movement. He became involved with a pregnancy resource center as a donor and volunteer over 20 years ago. Quickly, Fischer began using his business experience and way of looking at everything to evaluate the pro-life movement. He began to use tools and data to evaluate opportunities, risks, and performance within the pro-life movement.

Sir Roger Scruton fought tirelessly for decades to save Western Civilization

Today’s episode of The Van Maren Show is a special episode in honor of Sir Roger Scruton, a writer, philosopher, and staunch defender of Western Civilization and its values.

He passed away yesterday, January 12th at 75 years of age after a battle with cancer. Sir Roger leaves behind a legacy of fighting for beauty, art, culture, and truth. Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister of the UK, has called him the “greatest modern conservative thinker.”

Sir Roger became an intellectual freedom fighter in 1979, smuggling banned books behind the Iron Curtain in Europe. Even after the wall fell, he continued to communism through his writing. Over his career, he wrote over 50 books, including, How To Be A Conservative; The Soul of the World; The Aesthetic Understanding; Beauty.

Jonathon Van Maren interviewed Sir Roger a few years ago and the two discussed the current state of culture, the need for true beauty in our art, and what we can do to revive our society.

A miraculous story: how Gianna Jessen survived a saline abortion

Jessen was born during a saline abortion in a Los Angeles abortion clinic at 29 weeks. Jessen was only 2.5 pounds when she was born, but she miraculously survived. She was born 18 hours into the saline abortion procedure, which burn, blind and suffocates babies who are born dead after 24 hours. Jessen allows people "to actually glimpse face to face the people that abortion has taken from us.”

How the creator of the ‘Magical Birth Canal’ viral video is saving unborn babies

It’s not every day you see a young woman dressed in a pink wig, even pinker lipstick, and holding a giant, sparkly tube that she informs the viewer is supposed to represent the human birth canal (“Disclaimer: birth canal is not the actual size of a birth canal,” we’re helpfully told).

The woman is Laura Klassen, the founder of CHOICE42, a one-of-a-kind pro-life organization that uses sarcasm, perfect comedic timing, and a healthy dose of truth to create viral pro-life videos designed to force even the most committed pro-choicers re-think their basic presuppositions.

The “Magical Birth Canal” video, which lampoons the notion that babies suddenly gain human rights by passing through their mother’s birth canal, is the most popular of Klassen’s videos – with the English-langauge version racking up over 200,000 views on Youtube alone. Many of her other videos have earned tens of thousands of views, and been translated into multiple languages.

'Surprisingly hopeful': Notre Dame professor talks about the future of conservatism, liberalism in the U.S.

On this week’s episode of The Van Maren Show, Jonathon Van Maren discusses the future of conservatism with Dr. Patrick Deneen, a professor at Notre Dame University. Deneen has a background in Constitutional Studies and Political Theory. He was a speechwriter and special advisor to the Director of the United States Information Agency. He’s been an associate professor of Government at Georgetown University and Princeton University before joining the faculty at Notre Dame in 2012. He has written several books and a number of articles focusing on the history of American political thought. His 2018 book called, “Why Liberalism Failed” is all about these topics.

The thesis of “Why Liberalism Failed” can be shoved into a nutshell of, “liberalism is failing because liberalism is succeeding.” Deneen provides clarity in the definitions of conservatism and liberalism. He explains that there’s been confusion in what we typically call conservatism in the United States. Deneen suggests that we might more appropriately call conservatives, “classical liberals.” He goes on to say that, “we need to understand there are two variants or versions of liberalism itself.”

The Hong Kong protests started months ago as a peaceful demonstration against an extradition bill passed by the Hong Kong government. The people of Hong Kong are concerned the authoritarian government will use this extradition policy to bring individuals accused of political crimes back to mainland China. Amazingly, according to Bocchi, the protests aren’t organized by a single person, but were more of a spontaneous combustion. Extraordinarily, everyone has been, and continue to be, on the same page as the protests and demands develop.

The call to support the pro-life movement: from advocate to leader

This week’s episode of The Van Maren Show takes listeners into the pro-life movement with Mark Harrington, the leader of Created Equal. Harrington spent over a decade working full-time to save babies in the final days of the Operation Rescue Movement and continuing with the Genocide Awareness Project with the Center for Bio-Ethical Reform. That is to say, he’s been involved in varying degrees of the boots-on-the-ground pro-life movement.

Van Maren starts off with his favorite question, “How did you get started in the pro-life movement?” Harrington tells the story of coming to Christ at 28 and then meeting his wife who was volunteering for a pregnancy resource center. It was her work with pregnant women, and her showing him a photo of an aborted baby that really changed the direction of his life. “You know, it was one of those things that you kind of feel the Holy Spirit just gripping your heart. And that changed my life. I mean, it was that quick; it was that immediate that I knew, at that point, I had to do something to stop the killing.”

Terri Schiavo's brother shares inside story of their fight to keep her alive

Jonathon Van Maren speaks with Bobby Schindler, brother of Terri Schiavo, on this week’s episode of The Van Maren Show. Schindler advocates for the medically vulnerable and is a full-time advocate, speaker, and writer. He’s a member of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities and his writings have appeared in The Wall Street Journal, Chicago Tribune, Time Magazine, and many more.

Schindler starts the conversation sharing what it was like to grow up with Terri; sharing the real happiness before the tragic story of her death. “Terri was always one that was always laughing in the house, whether it was at my dad’s corny jokes or just whatever.” It wasn’t long after the entire Schindler family relocated to Florida that things started to deteriorate. And then on February 25, 1990, Terri collapsed while home alone with Michael and Schindler was called by his dad to go check on her. Schindler then shares what was happening in the weeks and months following the initial collapse.

Going quickly from the few months after the collapse, during which time they saw Terri improve, Schindler skips ahead to eight years later when Michael Schiavo really took the legal matters into his own hands and pushed to have Terri’s feeding tube removed, despite the fact that she was not considered to be in a “vegetative state.”

In this week’s episode of The Van Maren Show, former porn star Deanna Spangler shares how she rose to fame in the pornography industry and why she finally got out.

Van Maren and Spangler speak about her difficult childhood, which included her parents introducing her to pornography when she was just six years old. Spangler explains that after her early exposure to pornography and the death of her mother when she was 10, she began engaging in prostitution. She easily slid into pornography from there, she tells Van Maren. They discuss the close connection between prostitution and pornography, and the degradation and shame women feel that keeps them trapped in this spiral.

Spangler also discusses truly horrific things – including assault and abuse – and the rise in violent pornography due to television becoming more and more graphic.

After a dramatic encounter with a man addicted to pornography that ended with him taking his own life, she eventually left the industry. Spangler then went to a Christian seminary and now helps men and women addicted to pornography. This shocking episode exposes the dehumanizing and trapping effects of the pornography industry on women, and the great evils swirling all around the evil of pornography.

There is a broad understanding that the pro-life movement was simply a reactionary movement to Roe v. Wade being legalized in the United States in 1973. In reality, this is not the case. History shows that some of the first pro-life laws were passed in the 1800’s in response to the discovery by doctors that life began long before “quickening,” which is when the mother could first feel the baby in the womb. These Protestant doctors stated that these human beings in the womb deserve protection under the law. It's also important to note that it wasn't until much later during the pro-life movement that abortion became associated with the right-wing beliefs.

A social conservative professor who was raised by his mom and her lesbian partner and who openly admits that he's bisexual is warning Americans that the Equality Act is a trojan horse that will "nullify" pro-life laws passed in various states and contains language that could lead to the abolishment of all sex-segregated bathrooms.

Robert Oscar Lopez is a professor of Humanities at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. He’s become most well-known for his article, published in 2012, on what it was like to be raised by homosexual parents. Most recently, Lopez spoke out against the Equality Act.
