64. Real thoughts about cruising after one year

This week we’re doing things a little differently, the main difference being that you won’t hear me in this episode! I asked previous guests, Jack and Sonya, from Two the Horizon to send us a bit of a real-life update as they approach their one-year anniversary of being on the move. In their first year of cruising, they left California, went up to Canada and then south to Mexico on their Passport 42.

In the first episode I did with Sonya and Jack you learned that they had lived aboard in the San Francisco Bay area for many years and operated their own boat detailing business. In this episode, Sonya and Jack flow freely from one topic to another as they look back at their first year of cruising. They talk about some of the surprises they found out about Mexico, and they share some good tips on boat maintenance while on the go. There's also an insightful look at social media as cruisers. 57. Going from a scheduled life to an unknown adventure

In today’s episode we talk about the highs and lows of sailing, and of life in general. My guests are Dev and Spandana from a Youtube channel called For Sun and Stars, and they tell me how they went from planning a two year backpacking trip to owning a sailboat. We also dive into insurance as new boat owners and what it’s like to leave successful careers behind to pursue an unknown adventure. As Dev and Spandana settled in for their cruising life in the Bahamas, they were dealt another change of plans in the shape of a serious health scare. This episode packs a lot in about 50 minutes or so and makes you reflect what’s important in life.

56. How to survive a multi-year refit

This week we are going all in on boat projects! 🛠 My guests are Chris and Kelly from Youtube channel Sailing Adrift and they have just recently completed a multi-year refit of their sailboat from the early 1970s. In fact, at the time of recording, they were just one week away from splashing and it was really great to chat with Chris and Kelly at this point in their journey. They had been working really, really hard, completely rebuilding the boat – and they filmed the whole thing for Youtube – and they actually didn’t have any sailing experience, so all this work was built on the idea that the sailing life will be as amazing as they think it is. So join us as we chat about how they survived the multi-year refit, what it entailed and what’s next.

In this interview I ask Regina about tips for anyone interested in being crew on other people’s boats, how to avoid nasty surprises when choosing a boat to crew on, and Regina also reflects on the two sides of Antigua she experienced: living in a rural village with no electricity, and working on a $50million super yacht – all within a few miles from each other.

37. A five year adventure through South American rivers

This week I’m bringing you a true adventure story and a very unique one at that! ⛵️ You will hear what it’s like to go way off the beaten path to the river systems of South America on a small and ultralight sailboat. My guest is Stephen Ladd, the author of a new book, the 5 year voyage - exploring Latin American coasts and rivers.

Stephen and his wife started their voyage in Florida, sailed down the coastal areas of Central America, and then went through the middle of South America all the way down to Buenos Aires, before they turned around for their return journey. It was quite the trip and in this interview, Stephen tells what it was like doing such an epic adventure.

36. How to enjoy cruising the ICW & Bahamas' pros and cons

This week we learn about cruising the Intracoastal waterway, or ICW, the inland waterway that goes from New Jersey to Florida. Specifically, we dive into why it’s not just a means to an end but actually a pretty neat way to see the US east coast. My guests are Lucy and Matt from Boat Life Academy, who have done the ICW total of 9 times! We also talk about their rocky start to the liveaboard life and how they eventually ended up loving the lifestyle so much they went from being employees to freelancers in order to keep cruising. And of course, since we are talking about the US East coast, I must find out what’s the good and the bad about the Bahamas!

Picture a sailboat against the backdrop of the gorgeous Greek archipelago and you'll get an idea of how everyday life looks like for Emily and Adam from Two Get Lost ⛵️ They were living in the UK until one day something happened that they took as a sign that it's time to stop dreaming and just go. Adam took his job with him and Emily reinvented herself using her professional background as a teacher, and now this couple leads a very different, fulfilled life while cruising in Greece.

34. The Pacific off the beaten path + essential broker questions answered

After 20+ years with the Canadian Forces, Max and Elizabeth Shaw decided to leave their military careers behind and switch things up a bit - by going cruising, of course. They left British Columbia as a family of four and returned 7 years later as a family of five with endless stories from the South Pacific. Max and Elizabeth talk about the beauty of adventuring off the beaten path in the South Pacific and Alaska, the logistics of crossing the Pacific with a 4-month old baby, and more.

Now that they have returned from their Pacific adventure they continue to live aboard their Stevens 47 sailboat in BC and Max has taken up a new career as a broker, using his cruising and liveaboard experience to help others find the right vessel for their adventures. Of course I had to ask Max about the boat shopping process, what happens behind the scenes when there are multiple offers and how much below asking price should offers be in today's sailboat market.

33. Five year circumnavigation and cruising life in the Bahamas

Who hasn't dreamt about sailing around the world at some point in time? My guest, Amy Alton from Out Chasing Stars followed that dream and made it a plan, and circumnavigated over 5 years. Amy has also spent a good amount of time in the Bahamas, and we talk about some of the practical aspects of sailing in the Bahamas, like provisioning, Internet and finding shelter.

In addition to being a cruiser, Amy is also an author and she writes for sailing magazines as well as a series of romance novels. And where does she get the inspiration for her travel themed novels? From the cruising life, of course!

32. What you need to know about sailboat insurance

This week it’s time for a deep dive into all things insurance. This episode will cover a high-level overview of the current insurance market, what exactly do insurance companies require from first time boat owners and how do we make ourselves and our boats more insurable.

My guest is John Neal from Mahina Offshore Services, and he reached out to a number of insurance companies in different countries with a list of questions we put together, so the answers are coming straight from the insurance companies. And of course, since John is a boat consultant, we do talk about buying a sailboat and what we should look out for to make sure we don’t buy a boat that turns out to be uninsurable. John also gives some advice on how to find a boat in this challenging market, and why we should consider insurance implications before we seal the deal on a boat.

31. Liveaboard life in California in all its glory and frustration

Living on a sailboat under the California sun with a comfortable climate and amazing islands to explore nearby sounds phenomenal, and my guests Marissa and Chris from Sailing Avocet admit that the liveaboard life in California is indeed pretty darn nice. However, there are inherent frustrations that come with this lifestyle no matter how nice the setting is, and of course I ask Marissa and Chris to share some of the downsides, too.

29. No excuse for a boring life: Circumnavigation after retirement

David Haigh left on his sailing trip after retiring from his job at a university, and sailed around the world and in some unusual places like the great European rivers, and to St Petersburg in Russia - and by the way there's a cautionary tale attached to this story! David shares great advice about choosing crew onboard and he talks about the importance of understanding that the cruising lifestyle is not just about sailing, it's most importantly about adventure.

23. Buying a sailboat in Mexico — and the reality of the refit

Buying a sailboat far from home is something that many of us may have considered, especially if the goal is to start sailing somewhere different or if there are more sailboats with better price points elsewhere.

Today's guests, Patricia and David from Sailing Milagros, are from Switzerland and they went all the way to Mexico to buy their sailboat. They are now in the middle of refitting the boat and getting her ready for sailing adventures. Patricia and David share some of the challenges they faced, and mention a few things to consider when buying a sailboat in Mexico, or anywhere far away from home. They also share a scary but educational story about sailing in the Sea of Cortez at night and what kind of problems sailors there can run into.

❗️Expert interview! ❗️Today we dive into the world of search and rescue with Royal Canadian Marine Search And Rescue (RCMSAR), a not-for-profit, volunteer-based organization that operates along the coast of British Columbia and in-land waters.

19. The risks and rewards of raising a family on a boat

What is it like to live on a sailboat and raise a family? Not just for a few years, but for over a decade. And not just one or two kids, but five. If you think this set up might result to some interesting stories, you would be right!

Today’s guest, Tanya Hackney, has written a book that is full of stories that give a good look at an adventurous life onboard. In this episode we talk about some of those stories and Tanya shares how she and her husband Jay made their sailing dream happen. The book is called “Leaving the Safe Harbor: The Risks and Rewards of Raising a Family on a Boat” and having had the pleasure to read it, I truly recommend it for anyone interested in this lifestyle, whether you have kids or not.

17. Holding on to liveaboard life even when everything changed

Growing up on the water gave Kayleen VanderRee an early connection to sailing but choosing it as a long-term way of life required intention, adaptation, and resilience.

In this episode, Kayleen shares how she moved from boat to boat with purpose, eventually choosing a Tartan 42 that could support both her cruising ambitions and a very different reality than she had originally planned for. After a major life-changing event, she and her partner, Tyler, had to rethink what life aboard would look like and how to make it work.

We also talk about changing careers to support a travelling lifestyle, making liveaboard life sustainable in the long term, and the practical considerations that come with committing to life at sea. This is an honest, thoughtful conversation full of perspective and useful insight for anyone considering the liveaboard path — especially when life doesn’t unfold as expected.

14. Saving animals from a sailboat in Central America and Mexico

If you have ever travelled in a foreign country and wished you could help the stray animals living on the streets - this episode is for you.

I had the pleasure of chatting with Dr. Sheddy, an Australian veterinarian who lives on her sailboat and travels in Central America and Mexico while offering free medical services to animals in need: stray cats and dogs, pets whose owners cannot afford expensive treatments or surgeries, and wildlife in distress. She also collaborates with the local communities and trains people locally, so that they can provide the best possible care to the animals in the long term.

Dr Sheddy also provides very helpful tips (and a word of warning!) for anyone who is looking to sail with their pets in Central America or Mexico. If you plan to sail with your dog or cat, you don't want to miss this episode!

You think you have found your dream boat, but how do you know you're not buying a lemon? You have an expert do a boat survey!

As a key part of the boat purchasing process, there's actually quite a bit to know about pre-purchase surveys in particular.

In this episode I interview Sarah White from Yacht Associates International based out of Vancouver, Canada. Sarah explains what are the different kinds of boat surveys, how surveyors work with the client and on the boat, what surveyors do (and also what they don't do), and of course we talk about the cost of surveys and how to identify a qualified, accredited marine surveyor.

8. Joh Neal on selecting a good bluewater sailboat

In this episode I bring you something a little different as I interview John Neal from Mahina Offshore Services, and we talk all about what makes a good bluewater sailboat. John has decades and nearly 400,000 nautical miles of experience so he is the perfect person to help me understand how to avoid making boat buying mistakes and how to focus on the right things when looking at sailboats. This chat was incredibly useful and educational, so if you want to learn more about sailboats and what qualities to focus on (and what to avoid!), definitely give this one a listen.
