Tonight's guest Dr. Bridget R. Cooks is the most well-read person we've had on the show. With a Ph.D. in Art History, Visual and Cultural Studies, she is a published author, has written in dozens of exhibition catalogues and academic journals, and has curated numerous exhibitions around the country. But these are only a few of the credentials, stories, and accomplishments in her name: to list everything we talk about in this episode would be impossible. And presently, she's stepping across the aisle, picking up the brush and becoming a visual artist herself. To simply address his works as "abstract" would be to miss the deeper layers of process that go on. Beyond depicting designed scenes, Scott's work experiments with the very medium itself: he has an intimate understanding of viscosities, transparencies, and intermixabilities of various pigments and carriers. What's more, he never stops experimenting and moving forward.

The guys do the annual Year in Review episode, looking at the triumphs and tribulations of last year while also what's exciting in 2025. It's been a year of great change at the gallery, especially in the last few months. But if there's any consistent theme at Location 1980, it's adaptability & rising to challenges.

After doing time as an employee, Natasha realized no path to success lay there: the only option is to take the reins in your own hands and chart a novel course. She produced flow art for a while that was a pleasing initial step into creative endeavours, and she experienced marketability, but felt undifferentiated from the hordes of other artists doing the same thing. Inspiration would be found on a trip to the motherland, India - Natasha is a first generation American - and her focus has honed. New works feature rich colours and architectural influences of India's timeless legacy.

In this episode the guys sit down with Lauren Kilb, longtime Location 1980 artist whose specialty is interactive art: pieces that once built, are only truly complete when the audience participates in what the piece has set up. In this way, the piece is not a static thing but a context for a conversation to take place between participants and artist, or participants and each other. Those who engage with the piece are elevated from mere spectators and become creators themselves. They have involvement and essentially choice rather than detached viewership. The piece gains an infinity, because the experience of it is as endlessly varietal as the people who engage with it, and simultaneously a deep personality as each person's involvement make their experience inimitably their own.

www.location1980gallery.com

@location1980

Lauren Kilb has traveled the world and created large-scale, interactive art pieces including at the black rock playa for Burning Man.
