The Wicker Man (1973)

Things get weird as we take on this folk-horror-musical-cult-classic that stars Edward Woodward, Christopher Lee and Britt Ekland. The film follows puritan Police Sergeant Howie from mainland Scotland as he arrives on a strange island to investigate the disappearance, and possible murder, of a young girl. It's May Day on this pagan isle and Sergeant Howie's case heats up as he faces down The Wicker Man. We talk the possibility of this show as an immersive, touring, outdoor musical, with community actor-musicians, and using the setting of heritage sites. May contain nudity.

Midnight in Paris: The Musical!

This week we're joined by our first married couple, Producer Radha Mamidipudi and Musical Director and Composer Alex Beetschen to chat about the Owen Wilson vehicle Midnight in Paris. The film follows a successful screenwriter trying to make the change to novelist as he enjoys a break in Paris with his fiancée and her disapproving parents. He dreams of Paris in the 1920s until, by a bizarre stroke of luck, he is transported there each night to meet his literary heroes of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Gertrude Stein and many more. We quickly decide the best route for this on stage is as a musical and we get to talking about the opulence of the 1920s, dual casting, and making the most of the musical genre.

Directed by Steven Soderbergh, it is the second installment of the Ocean's franchise and the sequel to Ocean's Eleven (2001). The film stars an ensemble cast consisting of George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Andy García, Julia Roberts, Don Cheadle, and Bernie Mac. We decide the film can't realy be staged so we take inspiration from the film's style and create a mind-bending genre-tour-caberet-pastiche

Matt Hassall brings us this English-language Spanish gothic supernatural psychological horror film. Grace (Nicole Kidman), the devoutly religious mother of Anne (Alakina Mann) and Nicholas (James Bentley), moves her family to the English coast during World War II. She awaits word on her missing husband while protecting her children from a rare photosensitivity disease that causes the sun to harm them. Anne claims she sees ghosts, Grace initially thinks the new servants are playing tricks but chilling events and visions make her believe something supernatural has occurred. It follows a woman who believes she is being stalked and gaslit by her abusive and wealthy boyfriend even after his apparent suicide, and ultimately deduces that he has acquired the ability to become invisible. The film stars Elisabeth Moss, Aldis Hodge, Storm Reid, Harriet Dyer, Michael Dorman, and Oliver Jackson-Cohen. It was originally supposed to be part of the shelved Universal Monsters Shared Universe.

Dominic Cummings' Rose Garden Press Conference

This week we're joined by Cesca Echlin and we're doing something a bit different. Infamously, Boris Johnson's chief political advisor Dominic Cummings broke lockdown rules to drive his wife and son to a cottage in the grounds of his parents house in Durham. He subsequently broke the rules further with an eye-sight-testing trip to Barnard Castle. A month later, he was caught out by the media and sat down for a press conference in 10 Downing Street's rose garden. That press conference is what Cesca has brought us to stage. We dig further into writing a piece around a true-story for the stage, as well as the usual discussions around space, music, casts and more.

1 Year of the podcast! This week we're joined by writer and language expert Anna Myrmus to add a NINETEENTH adaptation to the Guinness World Record holder for most adapted film of all time: Perfect Strangers, AKA Intimate Strangers, AKA Nothing to hide, AKA Le Jeu, AKA Stranger in My Pocket, AKA Loud Connection, AKA Unknown Subscriber, and the list goes on!!

A group of old friends and their partners meet up one evening for a dinner party hosted by Marie and Vincent. A rare lunar eclipse is also expected to occur on the same evening. At the dinner table, after hearing of Ben's questionably humorous story of a woman who found out about her husband's extramarital affairs only upon his death at the hospital after looking through the messages on his unlocked mobile phone, the group then starts discussing their phone lock settings and sharing information on their phones with their partners. To spice up the dinner, Marie then suggests a game where everyone surrenders their phones to the centre of the table and any messages, emails, or calls received on anyone's phone would have to be shared with everyone else. As the game progresses, more secrets begin to unravel, putting doubts on their friendships and marriages.

We discuss how this film is already pretty much an Ayckbourn play, but how we'd add a few gimmicks, and change the odd bizarre ending...

Inside Out

This week we're joined by Elspeth Barron (again!) to discuss the perpetually tear-jerking Pixar film, Inside Out.

Inside Out follows 11-year-old Riley as she navigates the challenge of moving from Minnesota to San Francisco. We see her emotions, in her mind, as they try to keep control of the situation and keep Riley joyful! The film is directed by Pete Docter and Ronnie Del Carmen, and it stars Amy Poehler, Bill Hader, Mindy Kaling, Phyllis Smith, Richard Kind, and Lewis Black.

Our staging takes its cues from the tradition of Pantomime, working with high-tech elements but with an overall lo-fi aesthetic that relies on painted sets and physical set-dressing, embracing audience interaction and accessible theatrical language.

John Legend, Rosemarie DeWitt, Finn Wittrock, and J. K. Simmons also star. With Music by Justin Hurwitz and lyrics by Pasek and Paul.

We take an unusual tac this week and go through the plot, discussing the music and what we would add and change for the stage.

The Truman Show

This week we are joined by actor and director Ellie Cooper and we're discussing the one and only 'The Truman Show'

The Truman Show is a 1998 American psychological science fiction comedy-drama film directed by Peter Weir, produced by Scott Rudin, Andrew Niccol, Edward S. Feldman, and Adam Schroeder, and written by Niccol. The film stars Jim Carrey as Truman Burbank, a man who grew up living an ordinary life that—unbeknownst to him—takes place on a large set populated by actors for a television show about him. Eventually, he discovers the truth and decides to escape. Additional roles are performed by Laura Linney, Noah Emmerich, Natascha McElhone, Holland Taylor, Ed Harris, Paul Giamatti and Brian Delate. This episode starts with a heated debate between three different ideas - but we settle on something very fun.

Sound designed by Erik Aadahl and Ethan Van der Ryn, A Quiet Place is a 2018 American post-apocalyptic science fiction horror film directed by and starring John Krasinski. Written by Bryan Woods, Scott Beck and Krasinski, the plot revolves around a father (Krasinski) and a mother (Emily Blunt) who struggle to survive and raise their children in a post-apocalyptic world inhabited by blind extraterrestrial monsters with an acute sense of hearing.

Press Cuttings Trailer!

We've taken a break from the podcast for the last couple of weeks because Jake and Caleb have been hard at work on our first radio play! It will be released this Wednesday 16th September.

Ever since we covered this text on the podcast, we've been hard at work in lockdown to bring you a radio play revival of one of Shaw's funniest plays.

This farce takes place in an alternate history: it's April 1st, 1911, Westminster has been completely overrun by suffragettes, compulsory military service is in effect, and it's up to Prime Minister Balsquith and General Mitchener to restore peace and tranquillity to a chaotic Britain. Unfortunately, a harmonious nation requires a little bit of compromise, something Balsquith and Mitchener are not accustomed to.

In Press Cuttings, Shaw provides one of his funniest and silliest satires, taking aim at anti-suffragettes, the military, and the lengths politicians will go to to stay in power.

Disney's Dinosaur

This week we are joined by a very special guest, amateur palaeontologist Ben Wilson, and we're discussing Disney's Dinosaur from 2000. This film made a splash with it's groundbreaking CGI animation interacting with real-life location shoots, and it still holds up 20 years on. With shades of Land Before Time, Tarzan, and the Jungle Book, Dinosaur follows Aladar, an iguanadon raised by early primates, as he joins a herd and attempts to find the hallowed 'nesting ground' after an apocalyptic event. In our staging, we ripoff Walking With Dinosaurs, War Horse, the Natural History Museum, and Universal's Jurassic Park Ride... all at once. Ben Wilson also gives us some of his coveted dinosaur facts at the end!

Chicken Run

This week we're joined by George Bailey from multi-arts company Chew Boy Productions to talk about Aardman animations' classic 2000 film Chicken Run. The highest-grossing stop-motion animated film in history, the plot centres on a band of chickens who see a rooster named Rocky as their only hope to escape the farm when their owners prepare to turn them into chicken pies.

As we stage this in our hypothetical theatre we talk about how to make actors non-cringy chickens, keeping audiences cooped up in a barn, creating senses of scale, family messaging and more!

Sorry To Bother You

This week we're joined by the inspirational Colette Webber from the Oxide Film Podcast to talk about Boots Riley's debut feature Sorry to Bother You. The film follows Cassius Green (LaKeith Stanfield) in an alternate version of modern-day Oakland as he takes a job as a telemarketer at a strange firm called Regal View. As Cassius progresses through the company by using his "white voice" (David Cross) he struggles to maintain his relationship with his girlfriend Detroit (Tessa Thompson) and his protesting co-workers (Steven Yeun and Jermaine Fowler) before Mr (Omari Hardwick) takes him to a party at CEO Steven Lift's (Armie Hammer) house and things take an even weirder and more disturbing turn.

As we stage this in our hypothetical theatre we talk about themes of capitalism, wage slavery, code switching, and the price of selling out. We also get into the nitty gritty of engaging the audience through the set design, utilising stylised lighting and atmospheric music, pushing suspension of belief to its extremity on stage, and how we might stage body horror in a believable way.

Philaster, or Love Lies A Bleeding, by Francis Beaumont & John Fletcher

This week Jake and Caleb are joined by Gregor Roach to stage Francis Beaumont and John Flether's 1620 play Philaster, or Love lies a Bleeding. An early Jacobean tragicomedy, the play can be read online at project Gutenberg, but here's a synopsis:

The play is set in a fictionalised version of the Kingdom of Sicily, ruled by an otherwise-unnamed king. This king's father and predecessor, the ruler of Southern Italy (the Kingdom of Naples), had conquered the island of Sicily and displaced the native royal house; but the heir of that house, and rightful king of Sicily, is Philaster, who lives as a nobleman in the royal court. The king fears him, but cannot kill him, because of the passionate loyalty of the people. The king has a plan, however: with no son of his own, he will marry his daughter Arethusa to a Spanish prince named Pharamond, and make the Spaniard his heir.

Arethusa, however, is in love with Philaster, and disdains the Spaniard. Philaster reciprocates the princess's affections, and sends his page Bellario to serve her and to be their intermediary. Arethusa is able to frustrate her father's plan by exposing Pharamond's affair with Megra, a loose gentlewoman of the court; but the Spaniard seeks revenge, by spreading reports that Arethusa is having an affair with Bellario. The passionate Philaster is deceived by the slander, and accepts it as true. During a hunt, Philaster confronts Arethusa; the overwrought protagonist stabs the princess (the incident that gives the play its subtitle). Philaster is interrupted by a passing countryman; they fight, and both men are wounded. Philaster crawls off, and Arethusa is discovered by nobles of the court.

Arethusa's and Philaster's wounds are not fatal; both recover. Philaster is found, arrested, and sentenced to death. The king places Philaster in Arethusa's custody; she quickly marries him, which causes the king to decree her death as well. The executions are frustrated when the rebellious citizens capture Pharamond and hold him hostage. The falsehood of Pharamond's accusation against Arethusa is exposed when Bellario is revealed to be a disguised female (she is Euphrasia, a courtier's daughter, infatuated with Philaster). Pharamond retreats to Spain. Since the rightful ruler of Sicily is now the king's son and no alternative presents itself, Philaster is restored to his crown.

Lady Bird

We're back, for good this time!? This week we're joined by Chichester Festival Theatre's Elspeth Barron to discuss Greta Gerwig's 2017 hit indie coming-of-age flick 'Lady Bird'. The film follows Lady Bird, played by Saoirse Ronan, as she navigates her final year at Catholic School in Sacramento and her relationships with family, friends, and boys. It's a comedy that packs a punch and captures it's period setting of 2002/3, as well as the end of high school, with astute observation.

For our hypothetical staging, we talk ensemble casts, quick moving sets, cars onstage(!?), getting past archaic orchestra pits, and treating this play as a memory onstage.

We're back from home and this week Jake and Caleb are joined by film buff Jacob Barron to discuss staging 'Ex Machina'. We'll be putting the 2014 academy award winning film, directed by Alex Garland, and starring Domhnall Gleeson, Alicia Vikander, Sonoya Mizuno, and Oscar Isaac, into our hypothetical theatre! Follows a programmer who is invited by his CEO to administer the Turing test to an intelligent humanoid robot.

This film workes wonders with just a $15 million budget, and was innovative beyond the screen in using tinder as a marketing tool .

George Bernard Shaw's Press Cuttings

Jake and Caleb have finally worked out how to record remotely and so they kick off Season 2 with George Bernard Shaw's 1909 play Press Cuttings! Subtitled A Topical Sketch Compiled from the Editorial and Correspondence Columns of the Daily Papers, It is a farcical comedy about the suffragettes' campaign for votes for women in Britain. Shaw's own pro-feminist views are never articulated by characters in the play, but instead it ridicules the arguments of the anti-suffrage campaigners.

The play is set three years in the then future, on April Fool's Day 1912, by which date the actions of the suffragettes are imagined to have led the government to declare martial law in central London. Because of potentially libellous satire of real politicians, the play was originally censored in Britain, but was soon performed in public with minor alterations.

Through this play we go on to discuss actor's preparation techniques, tokenism in theatre, and topical art today. Leap Year

Happy Leap Day! We're back after a break for our preview performances of 'Pleading Stupidity'. Jake and Caleb are joined by Learning, Education and Participation officer of Chichester Festival Theatre Elspeth Barron to discuss staging 'Leap Year'. We'll be putting the 2010 film, starring Amy Adams and Matthew Goode, into our hypothetical theatre! Leap Year follows a real estate worker who heads to Ireland to ask her boyfriend to accept her wedding proposal on leap day, when tradition supposedly holds that men cannot refuse a woman's proposal for marriage. Her plans are interrupted by a series of events and are further complicated when she hires an Irish innkeeper to take her to her boyfriend in Dublin.

Yet another poorly reviewed Rom-Com on the pod you say? Well, this ones a road trip movie too! See how we end up with a static one act musical?

Come for Leap Year, stay for Jake's rant about Come From Away and Six.

Jake and Caleb are joined by actor James Akka to discuss staging '50 First Dates'. We'll be putting the 2004 Adam Sandler film, starring Drew Barrymore, into our hypothetical theatre! In 50 first dates, Henry, a womanizing marine veterinarian who falls for an art teacher named Lucy. Realizing she was involved in an accident that means she looses her memory since the crash each time she falls asleep, he resolves to win her over again each new day.

This is an incredibily interesting premise stuffed into a rom-com and as such we really take it off-genre this week!

Brewster's Millions

Jake and Caleb are joined by Actor, Originator of the "Maybe You Like It, Maybe You Don't" catchphrase and enemy of the podcast Daniel Ergas to discuss staging 'Brewster's Millions'.

We'll be putting Winchell Smith and Byron Onley's 1906 play, based on George McCutcheon's novel , into our hypothetical theatre. Or perhaps our dockside warehouse? 'Brewster's Millions' is about a young man who must spend a million dollars that he has inherited in order to inherit many millions more.

By the end of this episode we're planning an all-late-middle-aged-women ensemble promenade piece with musical elements. Listen to find out how Daniel gets us there!

Christmas with the Kranks

In this Christmas Special, Jake and Caleb go it alone to discuss staging 'Christmas with the Kranks' . We'll be putting Joe Roth's 2004 film, starring Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis, into our hypothetical theatre! Based on John Grisham's 2001 novel 'Skipping Christmas', the film follows a couple who decide to skip Christmas one year since their daughter is away, much to the chagrin of their neighbours. The couple are then sent into a panicked backtrack when their daughter calls them on Christmas Eve to announce she is coming home for Christmas after all, and with a boy no less.

We're not a film critisism podcast so aplogies for how much we bash the movie in this episode. A rotten tomatoes score of 5% doesn't lie.

Hamilton (Not That One)

Jake and Caleb are joined by Actor Gemma Daubeney to discuss staging 'Hamilton'... the 1917 play, that is, not the musical.

We'll be putting Mary Hamlin's play on in our hypothetical theatre... or will it even be a theatre? 'Hamilton' dramatises the events of Hamilton's life around the states debts and Maria Reynold's scandal. Or in other words, 'Say no to this', 'the room where it happens', 'we know', 'hurricane', 'the Reynolds Pamphlet' and 'burn'... but with a quite different message...

There's a lot to love in this piece, and a lot to fix. Here's our stab at it!

Black Mirror's 15 Million Merits

Jake and Caleb go it alone to discuss staging '15 Million Merits' from anthology series Black Mirror. We'll be putting Charlie Booker and Kanak Huq's 2011 feature length episode, starring Daniel Kaluuya and Jessica Brown Findlay, into our hypothetical theatre! In 15 Million Merits, Bing, who has recently inhereted 'credits' from a relative, meets Abi, an excellent singer, and convinces her to participate in a talent game show to escape the slave-like world around them. The episode is a science-fictiondystopia which features a parallel to reality shows such as The X Factor and figures such as Simon Cowell.

15 Million Merits was the second episode to air despite being the first to be written, and similarly this was the first episode we recorded!

When we first came to this film, we thought it would be near-impossible to stage. But with Will's expertise in lighting design we manage a coherent and exciting set of ideas!
