A few days ago I got to interview an old Personal Trainer Simon and his going to be sharing his story on his experiencing on his mental health.

"Back in 2011 I was working in an office, living a sedentary lifestyle and generally not taking care of myself. I was eating takeouts 4-5 times a week, going out lots and coupled with being inactive, caused me to be overweight. I wasn’t feeling great about myself!

"I decided to change my lifestyle, stopped calling for delivery food and started cooking for myself. I also started exercising regularly, gradually it made me feel much better about life. I was losing weight, but also with each workout I was feeling much more positive. The endorphins that exercise produced really had a great affect and now I can’t go a day without it. I decided if I could do it anyone can and I really wanted to help others achieve what I had done. Taking the next step, I became a personal trainer so I could share my knowledge of how exercise really can have a positive affect on your mental health."

https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/stress-anxiety-depression/mental-health-helplines/

Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/mens-mental-health.

Hosted on Acast.

Quick summary, we spoke about the impact of the 2nd lockdown and how I found it more of a struggle than the first due to the cold and dark of winter, and even less opportunity to leave the house. I appreciate that I am lucky to have my wife and stepson with me but I completely empathise and sympathise with people who may not be in such a privileged position.

We spoke about the loss my very close friend and the awful and tragic experience you had, and the different ways of coping with such grief and sadness. It was positive that you could come to work and receive support. I needed some time to accept the shock of losing my friend but was lucky to have support from Chantelle. Everyone handles things in their own way which is fine, but it’s best not to try to cope alone if possible.

We also spoke about another friend of mine who experienced a break up during lockdown and also redundancy and had a fleeting thought of ending his life. He sought help from close friends and then felt strong enough to talk with professionals which has helped him address family issues he had carried with him since a very young age. This effectively saved his life which I’m so pleased about.

We talked about medication and the stigma around it. I do not believe medication is the answer for everyone, and there are various risks so it needs to be managed and monitored by professionals. But for some people, they may need to use medication for the longer term, whilst for others, it may just give them the lift they need to feel confident and motivated enough to address issues, and makes changes in their life in relation to the issues making them feel down/anxious./depressed/worthless/etc. We also talked about unhealthy lifestyle choices and how things like smoking and drinking alcohol do not help address issues. The answers are NOT at the bottom of a bottle!

I mentioned a documentary by a professional rugby player called Joe Marler. It’s definitely worth watching for anyone out there who is struggling with their mental health in silence. It’s called Big Boys Don’t Cry. He is a very brave man and it is a great example of how seeking and receiving help and support can enable people and their loved ones to overcome, and/or live with mental health problems. I forgot to mention that Tyson Fury, the professional World Champion Boxer is another great example of how seeking help can help. He has done a lot of work around mental health so I would encourage your listeners to watch both Joe’s and Tyson’s documentaries.

Acknowledging mental health issues is a strength, not a weakness, and is the first step to hopefully making things better.

Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/mens-mental-health.

Hosted on Acast.

On today's episode of my podcast Men's Mental Health, I'll be interviewing a great colleague and an even greater friend on his views on men's mental health from both a personal and professional side.

We spoke about how mental health can be affected by the impact of coronavirus, the lockdown and isolation; how activities that we used to take for granted are no longer possible, such as playing sports or going to the gym, seeing friends and family and opportunities for social contact. The anxiety experienced by some around catching coronavirus or loved ones catching it. Stress caused by employment and financial issues, especially for those unable to work during the lock down periods.

We also talked about the reasons why men in particular may be reluctant to talk openly about issues with their mental health such as embarrassment or appearing weak or maybe feeling like they may be made fun of. Or people may feel reluctant to talk about mental health problems if they do not understand the issue themselves and are maybe confused as to why they experience certain feelings or emotions. In my opinion talking about mental health problems shows a strength of character and bravery. The first step towards making things better is acknowledging there is a problem and seeking support to manage it.

Finally, you asked me what my advice would be to anyone experiencing mental health problems and as I mentioned, the first step is acknowledging the problem and asking for help and/or support. There is no shame in acknowledging a mental health problem and there are services available to help, especially for those who may not have friends or family they can talk to. It is ok not to be ok, and opening up about mental health problems is just as important as seeking help for physical health problems. The first step can be the hardest, but is the first step towards hopefully making a positive difference.

https://www.menshealthforum.org.uk/beatstress.uk

https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/stress-anxiety-depression/mental-health-helplines/

Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/mens-mental-health.

Hosted on Acast.
