If you're still reading...this is what happened when Chris Budd left the recording of the show last night, that was released earlier.

After the mention of Mandalorian in ep.120, I'd joked to Phil about a spin-off podcast, so in the spur of the moment, we made the pilot.

It mainly contains a story of how I paid for my flights & accommodation at Cannes Film Festival one year, thanks to the Revenge of the Sith and a bald Natalie Portman & friends.

Then there's another story about a guy called Bill meeting Darth Vader.

By now you would have heard about 'Project Big Picture', the mooted power grab by Manchester United and Liverpool (and the Top 6), that provides some short-term solutions to English football's problems, but with long-term consequences.

We've actually recorded a proper Patron Extra show on this, but since, I've had a three-hour Football Supporters' Association National Council meeting, where we spoke about it at length. Today, the Premier League voted on it, and tomorrow, the EFL will get round the table to discuss the next step. With this in mind, we'll probably update that recording before releasing it.

In the meantime, I thought I'd post up these two little ditties for your info. Talksport Breakfast show asked me for a short voice note on Project Big Picture, so that's up first, for just over a minute. Then it's Villa CEO Christian Purslow's short interview this morning on Radio 4's Today programme (which media outlets have got their quotes from).

I made an appearance on the Sportsbar show on Talksport last night. As usual, I agreed to do it, so I could put it up here for you.

They pre-recorded it at around 9pm (and broadcast after midnight). It turned out to be a strange one, as they put me through without any introductions, so I had no idea who I was talking to , when it was obvious it wasn't Jason Cundy on the show, with Andy Goldstein, as it normally is.

It turned out it was ex-Arsenal player Perry Groves. I wish I knew at the time, as I would have made more of Villa's pre-season wins against Arsenal and Manchester United! (who Goldstein supports).

Anyway, bog standard questions - how are Villa doing this season? (We've hardly played!) What's the score going to be? Would you take 17th and a Cup win? Zzzz. Etc.

There was a bit of a cheeky ending by them, after I signed off. They were saying how unhappy I sounded... What did they mean? That was me happy! :)

1. You have to get a Discord account, by downloading the Discord app to your phone or computer via discord.com (If you have a microphone at home, it might be worth setting up on your computer too).

The good thing about it though is you can take part via your phone, wherever you are!

2. if you're using a phone, to connect your Discord account to Patreon and automatically join Match Club, you have to log into Patreon via their website patreon.com/moms (their mobile app doesn't work for this yet).

The Villaverse is spinning fast, so fast that it's impossible to record a podcast and not have it out of date the following day. The past week we've recorded three sessions. There was originally going to be a bonus 114.5 talking about Watkins, then episode 115.

Anyway, in the end, I decided to just put out ep 115 and be done with it.

The good news is there's a couple of versions of Episode 115. Confused? Well, you should be! I am.

One version is for your ears only - there was too much funny discussion to just waste.

I think the only same bit of the two shows is us talking about transfer targets and discussing Watkins, Martinez & Traore.

Apart from that, they're totally different.

This one is probably a bit sillier and mainly what would have been episode 114.5. It also has our season predictions at this point in time (we'll probably do it again on the main show, after the transfer window closes) and our feedback on the United friendly in more detail than the main show.

In episode 115, which will also be out in a matter of hours, we talk more about the Grealish contract, Burton game and 'Underrated or Overrated' assesses Michael Oakes and Steven Davis.

Aston Villa CEO Christian Purslow was a guest on Radio Four's Today programme this morning and he expressed his concerns over the continuing absence of fans due to the Covid virus.

Purslow also reacts to the recent government announcement that the potential October 1st return date, for at least some supporters in stadiums, would now be under review.

By the sounds of his choppy telephone line, I think Purslow might have an old Nokia mobile phone...or maybe he was using a burner phone!

Anyway, it's fairly interesting stuff and gives you a picture of where Villa are now on the matter.

The aim for Jack Grealish this season would be to make the England squad for the Euros. The Villa captain not making Gareth Southgate's first squad of 2020/21 sent the Villa fanbase into uproar. But had he done enough since the last England squad was called up back in November 2019?

While England boss is lampooned on social media, in this bonus show the MOMS team look at the reality of Grealish's situation since missing out on selection back in November and how his position now compares to then. Is he in any better position since his lockdown incident or restart form? What exactly is Southgate after for his team? Will Grealish have to change his role at Villa? Have some of these stats been misleading?

We take the claret and blue glasses off and take a rational approach to examine the Grealish's predicament and ask how he finally gets into the national squad and how it affects Villa in the short-term.

Not long left until the season kicks-off (already).

Without supporters being able to enter stadiums, the release of the fixture list was greeted with less excitement than usual, since we all don't know when we'll be allowed back into Villa Park or any football stadium. Villa supporters are STILL waiting for the club to reach out and discuss the returning to Villa Park situation. Other clubs have consulted with their fans over the past few weeks and months, so this is a bit of bad form from Villa to be honest.

Anyway, moving on, some of the podcast listeners asked for an Over or Underrated on the whole Villa squad based on their efforts in the 2019/20 season. So here it is.

I may put a version of this out on the end of the next podcast, so this is at least a rawer form.

Remember, that Over or Underrated doesn't necessarily mean we think a player is great or poor, it's based on expectation and where they could/should have been in terms of their potential.

It's also a bit of fun.

The idea is to be forced into making a case for either a player to be over or under rated...as you'll hear in this episode, Chris still hasn't quite grasped the concept! He's always adding his own fence sitting mitigation "slightly overrated" or "ever so slightly...".

There is no "slightly", it is 'over' or 'under' - those are the rules!

Dan was on holiday when we recorded this, but Phil is on the show. His mic seemed to suggest he was sitting on the toilet while doing this, but the good news is a new mic has been acquired for future shows. His MOMS podcast career has been saved!

It's a tough baptism of fire for Dean Smith this week with three games in less than a week, but lets hope by the weekend, it'll be two wins out of three.

I think as long as he picks up points in the next month, while trying to transition the team to be more organised and effective with the ball, then we might be able to do some damage in the December fixtures against teams that will be pushing for promotion.

Last season, Fulham played the top six teams back-to-back and won five and drew one, which really catapulted them into promotion contention. Hopefully, Villa can also get a decent set of results to give them serious momentum going into the new year.

Anyway, in the next day or do the new podcast will drop. I'm just editing it now. For those who are familiar with the show, it normally starts with 'Three Points', which are either general football  observations or Villa-related in some sense.

The idea is to make them a short and sharp starter to the podcast episode. In reality though, we tend to get carried away and by the time we've finished them, 30 minutes of the podcast has already gone by and we haven't even got onto what's happening with Villa!

In the new episode, we were doing well with points 1 & 2, but then on point 3, I started talking about my meeting with the West Midland's Football Police independent Advisory Board and that point clocked over 12 minutes in itself.

Now, there's plenty to talk about, including, cabbages, streakers and drone use in the forthcoming Second City derby... for a discussion on civil liberties, there's plenty of laughs too.

Is it too long though? 

There's a film sample in there of over a minute, which I thought of cutting down, but I kind of like it playing out.

Anyway, in case I decide to cut it down, I thought I'd give you an advance listen of the uncut version.

I was asked by BBC WM radio to come on the show this Monday morning to talk about Villa's first game under Dean Smith. 

Now, I'm not big on early starts or talking to anybody early doors, but they did say it was going to be just before 8am, so it wasn't that bad. I occasionally say yes to these things to basically plug the podcast.

Naturally, they called up 20 minutes or so earlier than expected. So, did the show fresh out the shower, wearing just my boxers, and lacking any coffee and breakfast.

I can't fake the bright and bushy tailed, 'it's great to be alive' morning radio show type tone and my humour only kicks in at about 10am.

That being said, I thought I'd throw the four minutes or so up here.

The questions where more statements of the obvious, so not much to bounce off.

We did record a full hours worth of podcast episode on Sunday night, which naturally is much more fun. Hopefully, i can get that out Tues/Wed.

It should be an interesting few days with Villa's back-to-back away games against Norwich & QPR.

So, the night before Villa announced their new managerial...sorry, senior coaching staff, we were recording a podcast regarding all the candidates for the job. We also did a Q & A with listener questions, which were primarily about the Villa manager's position.

The next day, while I was editing it together, Villa made their announcement and the podcast was instantly made pretty much redundant.  There's some hours, I'll never get back...

Anyway, today, myself and Chris Budd recorded a quick reaction episode to the Smith appointment, which I'll put up here in advance in it's basic form.

When I release it to the wider public, I'll stitch on any Q &A's I can salvage from that first session we did.

I put out Episode 51 of the podcast this morning (Friday) and this second episode will mainly consist of answering listener questions. In the show, before we get into the questions, the three of us have a debrief on Bruce, the Rotherham game and Bruce's talk of 'The Mad Few' and the Intelligent fans.

While i'm editing the Q & A section of the show, I thought i'd serve you up an advance sneak of the start of the show. There's some fun conversation in there especially on what Bruce said about fans in the press.

I had to go solo on this episode of the podcast (not easy!) and also pull an all-nighter to put it together and finish it.

While it may lose some of the humour a two-hander conversation can throw up, I've thrown in some added sprinkles of surrealness to keep things cooking.

 While I write the notes and mess around with uploading it properly, I thought I'd post it here to give the main supporters of it a chance to have a first look/listen.

The transfer window has shut and Jack Grealish is still standing on the Villa Park side of it. That certainly sets up the rest of the season now on a positive footing. I'm glad the window closes when the Premier League kicks off now - it just makes sense, as teams can get about their business.

Anyway, I'm currently recording episode 48 of the podcast. Dan has gone AWOL and is also off on holiday on Friday.  I'm not going to lie, it's getting frustrating not being able to rely on him to do the show regularly.

So, as I've been close to doing several times before, I'm doing this sucker solo (with the help of listener questions too). As the saying goes, if you want something doing, do it yourself. The show goes on!

Hopefully, he'll return soon, but I'm making other plans to do different things with the show and make it more regular now the season has kicked off.

Normally, I put the opening credits together at the end of recording the show, but I've put them together first this time. So, as an advance to wet the appetite, here they are - the entire two minutes - featuring references to Jack staying and the Scottish Cafu's wonder strike.

The rest of the show will hopefully go up today (Friday). I'll obviously talk transfers, answer a ton of listener questions and also recall my trip to the season opener in Hull.

Letter

First of all, as you've probably seen on social media, I received a letter today from the new Villa owners Wes and Nassef, from being part of Villa's Football Consultation Group (FCG).

It was mainly to introduce themselves and also confirm that they wanted to very much continue the FCG and meet with it personally. Considering they were only announced as owners on Friday, this was a positive show of their intent.

The tone of the letter was also good and not patronising and phoney, as these things can be.

They again reaffirmed their role as stewards:

'We very much understand that we are stewards of the Club on behalf of its true owners, the fans, and we take that responsibility seriously.'

To call the fans the 'true owners' was a nice sentiment...unless they direct the taxman to us, to pay off what the club owes!

It's early days, but at least one of the early signs is encouraging.

FFP Listening

Speaking of money, this isn't strictly a bonus podcast (I'm still editing those beasts), but I thought you might want to listen to this discussion on Talksport by journalist Mark Scott on Villa's FFP situation.

It's a good listen, there is one error at the end, when he's talking about ground value, which I think he was wrongly informed on (which he admitted on Twitter).  

I'm also positive about the FFP situation and I think fresh eyes, especially from Wes Edens, will also help tackle the reality of it and give us some wiggle room to manoeuvre financially in the short-term. I'll go into more detail elsewhere.

Sandwiched either side of the trip to Parliament for Safe Standing (see previous post), was a couple of radio appearances. An earlier one in the day on Talksport 2 and then a five minutes slot on the Sportsbar show on Talksport (included here) around the midnight hour, when I got back to Birmingham.

I turned a few smaller shows down. I only do these interviews to keep the word out on MOMS and also to have ready made mini podcasts for you guys. 

Because I've been out and about a bit this week, it's been difficult to sit down and write what I think/know about this Villa situation. I will get to that in the next 48 hours though.

Obviously, I've spoken to people at the club and in the media, and suffice to say, it's not good. Although, I'm sure you've already come to that conclusion! But not good in a 'Defcon 2' kind of way.

Anyway, I thought I post this up here for you, as some people have asked to hear it. It mentions an article I wrote over two years ago about my suspicions of the Xia and Wyness combo and the buyout of Villa. I also talk about the two year gamble, the warning signs, the wage bill now with the likes of Scot Hogan and Micah Richards stuck on it.

I'm sure it's going to be an interesting and eventful few weeks ahead, although I was hoping the only football I'd have to think about was watching the World Cup.

I hope you are well despite this numbed state of mind we now find ourselves in as Villa supporters.

I thought for completists sake and to fill the gap while I wait until Dan returns my WhatsApp messages so we can record another podcast show, I'd post up a radio appearance in the build-up to Wembley...

Lets go back in time to last week, when I was still confident Villa were going to do it. After all, we had the big time players for the Wembley high-stakes occasion...

In the build-up to the play-off final, the Sportsbar show on Talksport asked me to come into their London studios on Thursday night, for an half-an-hour or so focus on the Wembley clash with Fulham (I've edited out all their ads and skits).

I never normally listen to Talksport, but I've been a guest a few times on the Sportsbar show and it normally has an edge of fun and they have some decent guests on from time-to-time.

I wasn't going to do it, as it was a bit early to go to London for the game, but out of the blue, a mate from London got in touch for the first time in two years, to tell me he had brought a bass guitar on eBay that needed picking up in Birmingham. 

This was within an hour of the Talksport request, so the stars-aligned and with the chaos that was looking likely on the trains on Saturday for the trip to Wembley, I thought, sod it, lets do it. I could stay at my bass guitar mate's place in East London and pop in-and-out of Wembley. So, I arranged Talksport to cover the train down and a lift after the show to take the bass guitar to my mate's house - you've got to work the angles!

I also was invited on the '72' show on Talksport 2 earlier on in the day, but did that over the phone, before I set off to London. I probably made more sense on that show, as it wasn't at the end of the day. Unfortunately, I can't get the audio for that, or I'd have added it to this 'bonus podcast show'.

While, I'm sure you don't want to suffer thinking about the play-off final again, some of what was talked about on the Sportsbar is still very relevant, from views on Steve Bruce, Xia Champions League plans, keeping Jack Grealish and rubbishing John Terry's mooted clause, if he had stayed.

There was a guy from a Fulham podcast on the show too. We had a decent chat before the show in the kitchen, while we waited to go on the show, so weren't really going to go at it on air, as the hosts probably wanted us to.

I just played the 'we're going to win' confident poker face throughout.

As the show's host said at the end, "that might come back to bite you in the end."

It did (who cares). But, as I said, I was truly confident Villa would deliver (this doesn't happen often!). I mean, surely this game was what the team had been saving themselves for all season?

At this moment in time, I'm certainly not confident about promotion next season though. I hope as the weeks go by leading up to the season's start, this feeling will change for all of us by the time the first ball is kicked of the 2018/19 season.

When recording the show, we commented on how we felt the couple of mumbled sentences he delivered to fans, from the pitch, were very underwhelming.

The next day, when checking Dan Rodger's emails of the various completed sketches we'd planned and written, there was a bonus one, I wasn't expecting.

Dan had written and voiced a Winston Churchill-style farewell Gabby speech.

I thought it was brilliantly written, surreal and poignant.

The presenter seemed a bit over-excited about Steve Round's recent interview and the Danish club link-up, although the reality is nothing has really happened in terms of the 'bigger picture' yet, apart from basic foundation laying.

Anyway, we talk about what's behind the seven-game winning streak, the rise of Grealish and look ahead to Fulham too. After I leave, they continue to preview the trip to Craven Cottage, so I left that in too.

Unfortunately, my mobile phone let me down, so my voice track sounds a bit crappy and cuts out a little bit. It's still listenable though.

I know it's a first world problem, but it's 2018 and my mobile reception is still crap!

MOMS Extra 40.5 show notes...

Second City Derby Special & Three Valuable Villans

If all goes to plan (i.e. promotion), this could be Aston Villa's last league clash with Birmingham City, for a while. So to honour that, here's an extra Second City Derby preview MOMS podcast show.

As well as looking at the match ahead and potential changes Steve Bruce and his coaching team may make to the unchanged line-up of recent games, we look at how Villa may tackle the likes of Sam Gallagher and Jota.

Who should play in this game as Villa's DM? Bjarnason? Jedinak? Whelan? Will Hogan be suited to a derby battle or will a one-off switch for this game be needed?

Also, David and Dan consider the three Villa players most likely to have the biggest impact on Villa's season and also discuss the threat of Fulham and the possibility of going unbeaten until the end of the season and maybe even catching Wolves.

Dan Rodgers returns from Belfast having witnessed a major event filming on the set of Games of Thrones season 8 to discuss with David Michael, Aston Villa's sixth win on the trot, as the club march on the automatic promotion spots.

As well as talk of Games of Thrones' ginger John Carew, the recent footballer sex tape to hit the headlines makes us recall Villa player's infamous videoed transgressions.

Back to the football, we look at another Championship team on an impressive run and look back at the Burton game, which although not an impressive performance (although a couple of Villa's goals were) sets up the derby with the Blues nicely.

We also count up Scott Hogan's touches for the Burton game, hear about an unfortunate end to one supporter's first Villa game and also listen to Negatron's concerns over Steve Bruce's growing popularity.

Having gone 2-0 down to Sheffield Wednesday in Villa's last game, it brought back memories of being 2-0 down against them on Big Ron Atkinson's first game in charge back in 1991, when that time we came back and won 3-2.

So, I've managed to track down a very rare clip of a podcast from 26 years ago (before they invented podcasts) called Big Fat Ron's Claret & Blue Army podcast.

I've always liked the possibility of audio-only podcasts, as you can let your imagination run free.

I didn't really want to do a podcast that was the same as everybody else's and was prepared to take a few risks in terms of listeners to evolve something that was a bit different and entertaining to make.

While we don't compromise on the Villa chat, we also want to honour the 'show' bit of 'podcast show' and use a bit of imagination by throwing in some laughs, sketches and surreal happenings along the way. 

We've already had dream sequences, time travel, Tony Xia as a northern Hovis-eating poet laureate, Jedinak as some Steve Urwin meets David Bellamy mad man (Jedinak is meant to be a bit boring in real life), messages from Randy Lerner messages, a negative Villa-supporting robot (who is a commentary on some fans' social media behaviour) and even the real life Ron Atkinson. 

Listeners to the last episode will know we've also got our hands on a teleportation gun, so there might be an avenue to have some fun with more time travel on the show along the way.

Bonus Podcast - Proud History 2009

Which brings us to this advance sneak of the forthcoming episode 30. 

Anybody who watched Villa's 1-0 win against Bolton will know it wasn't a great advert for the game of football, so in the upcoming show we teleport back to 2009 on the day Villa last beat Bolton at Villa Park.

So this is the segment of the show, where we go back to a time before My Old Man Said and give you an insight into what the podcast might have been called and sound like, if we did this back in 2009.

12 games have been played in the 2009/10 season and we discuss Villa's 5-1 win against Bolton, in the days of Martin O'Neill, John Carew, James Milner, Steve Sidwell, Carlos Cuellar, Gabby MK I and co.

Warning - there's more than a pinch of improvised satire along the way!

Let us know what you think about this idea. We did it completely improvised after watching the goal highlights of the match, but I think it could be fun doing more stuff like this. For example - the night after the night in Rotterdam and other historical Villa moments.
