Zak has his own experience with sofa surfing and last year thousands left custody without a home, this episode breaks down what to do now and where to get help.

Back on episode 28, almost 16 months ago we heard from Laudjah who was fresh out of prison. He told us of how he was adapting to life on the out and the financial challenges that come with this transition - He shared how he was having to curb his love of the finer things and how he was committed to turning over a new leaf

Now, he’s got a job he loves, he’s moved out of the hostel and he’s saving for his future. Laudjah has made big changes and has kept a positive mindset throughout. Zak & Emma react and reflect on his successes and share how to use Laudjah’s story as inspiration and motivation.

As Zak says, it can be a bit of a rollercoaster but if you plan effectively and get things in place BEFORE release it can make life that little bit easier. While having all of this flexibility is undoubtedly a positive thing, imagine having to acclimatise to this modern world with no experience of it. Here to help are the fantastic organisation ‘Dosh’ who believe “that everyone should have personalised support to use their money in the way they want and for the things they enjoy” and they have been “committed to promoting independence around money for people with a learning disability since 2007”

This is the last episode of our employability mini-series. A huge thank you to all the people, organisations and charities who have been involved with this series

GXO Logistics actively works with ex-offenders and prisoners through partnerships with organisations like Tempus Novo and New Futures Network. These collaborations aim to provide employment opportunities and support networks for individuals re-entering society after prison.

Bob is their ‘Talent Pipeline Development Manager’ and oversees lots of this work. Bob tells us why GXO are so keen on working with people who have experience of the Criminal Justice System, what development opportunities are available and how you could be the next GXO employee. Bob also introduces us to Blake who started working with GXO on ROTL while he was inside. Blake tells us how this all came about, what motivates him to lead this better life and what the future holds for him

71. Employability - Kier

Following hot on the heels of our entrepreneurial mini-series Zak & Emma are spending the next few episodes looking at employability; How to find a job, how to prepare for one and who can help you along the way…

Siyanda first came across Kier while in prison. The idea of working in construction didn’t really appeal to her but she was encouraged to attend a focus group by an officer. During the session, Siyanda discovered the wealth of roles offered by Kier and reached out to them when she moved to open prison which led to her securing employment with them.

She is now their 'senior D&I project coordinator' and says attending that focus group was the best thing she ever did. On this episode, Zak & Emma are joined by Richard and Paul from ‘Clean Slate Solutions’ who work in partnership with social value driven employers across Teesside and North Yorkshire. They provide mentored support to candidates who are stable, ready, and committed to finding employment.

Richard was inspired to set up CSS after his own brush with the Criminal Justice System. He now uses that lived experience to support and inspire the next generation of prison leavers. While Paul himself turned to CSS at his lowest ebb when he felt he was ‘unemployable’, he now works as a mentor within CSS

Around 13% of prisoners were released to homelessness last year. Having no fixed address can make it really tough to open or maintain any kind of banking provision. Having no kind of banking provision can make it more difficult to receive benefits, wages or to pay for goods or services. Because of this HSBC, in partnership with Shelter launched the ‘No Fixed Address’ service to help people break this cycle

Joining Zak & Emma on this episode are Vanessa Whale from HSBC & Megan Barrow from Shelter to tell us about the service, how it works and the logistics if you or someone you know would benefit from it.

51. The Prisoner Banking Programme Explored | Emma & Adam

The ‘Prisoner Banking Programme’ allows eligible prisoners to apply for a basic bank account whilst in custody. Sentenced prisoners with no more than 6 months and no less than 6 weeks left until their release are encouraged to reach out to see if their prison supports the scheme

We spoke with the New Futures Network about the ‘PBP’ back on Episode 11 and are now delighted to welcome Emma & Adam who work for one of the 7 banks that are partnering with prisons to support the scheme. Emma & Adam tell us why it’s so important to have a bank account, how to get a bank account set up and what to do with any existing accounts while you’re in custody

With the cold months really setting in, it’s extra important to make sure you're as energy efficient as possible to save some pennies but more importantly, to make sure that you remain warm and safe at home; National Energy Action are the national fuel poverty charity aiming to ensure that everyone in England, Wales & Northern Ireland can achieve that level of warmth and safety and to help every one of the 6 million people currently suffering from fuel poverty

Joining us on the show is the lovely Zora from NEA and she has some great tips to be more energy efficient but also some ‘must do’s’ if you're moving in to a new property to ensure you don’t get stung with charges further down the line.

The Hardman Trust are here to help you with that transition, they offer specialised support that can start in prison and continue on your release. They feature a range of services from letter writing, to signposting and even financial grants. The 18th - 24th November is 'Safer Gambling Week' - A cross-industry initiative to promote safer gambling in the UK & Ireland

Gambling can have a huge effect on your finances as our guest Ben found out first hand. Ben's gambling started small before spiralling out of control and eventually culminated in a prison sentence after stealing from his employer to fund his addiction.

Ben now supports people who are suffering with similar issues. His work includes ‘Time Out’ which is a gambling recovery service in Nottingham, through ‘Double Impact’ and he co-hosts ‘Hold or Fold’, a gambling focussed podcast also produced by the ‘Prison Radio Association’

When you first land in prison, contacting your bank and creditors may well be towards the bottom of your list of priorities. However, once you’re a bit more settled you can make life easier on yourself and reduce stress by ensuring your bank is aware of your current circumstances. This could stop your accounts going dormant, reduce charges/interest and make it more likely that you have banking in place for your release.

There really is a 'Day' for everything and today is 'International Identification Day' (16th September) so Emma & Zak are looking at ways to sort out your ID while you’re in prison.

To help them, they’ve invited back Paul Retout from the Tax Academy (And frequent Inside Time contributor) to look at how it might be possible to source a birth certificate, passport or driving licence while you’re inside. Spoiler: It’s not going to be easy but it IS possible

Having some form of valid ID is really important as it can help you secure a bank account, employment and it will even allow you to vote!

‘Stop Loan Sharks’ investigates and prosecutes illegal money lenders and provides support for borrowers in the UK - This year alone they have helped with the confiscation of over £1.5 million from loan sharks

One of the most difficult things to do when you’re having debt troubles, is getting in touch with your creditors. You might have feelings of embarrassment or be worried what the next steps might involve. The anxiety surrounding this can be made worse by being in prison, it’s no longer a case of making a phone call or going online

If this sounds familiar, then Money Mondays is here to help. We’ll be looking at why it’s important to speak with your creditors, how to do this from inside prison and the kinds of support they might be able to offer you.

NACRO is an organisation that believe “everyone deserves a good education, a safe and secure place to live, the right to be heard, and the chance to start again, with support from someone on their side” - They do a lot of work with people who have experience of the Criminal Justice System and “See your future, whatever the past”

Producer Sam paid a visit to their personal wellbeing service in St Albans which covers a range of areas including Finance, Benefit & Debt. While there he met with Fiona & Joanne to discuss the amazing work they do and how they are supporting prison leavers. He also met Paige & Bill who have been working on some personal projects to help with the cost of living crisis. Bill has a particularly powerful story as he was helped by NACRO after his time in prison and he now works alongside them using his own lived experience to help those who find themselves in a similar situation. Both Paige & Bill discuss the importance of reaching out for help if you need it

Moving from one bank to another used to be a long and arduous task. This meant that most of us would stay with our bank for many years even if we weren't happy with the service

Now, it couldn't be simpler and as such, banks are having to up their games which means you could be getting a nice cash incentive!

During this time he helped prisoners open more than 2500 bank accounts and assisted them with debts of almost £10 million, in doing so he became known within prison and probation circles as the ‘Money Man’

Pat talks about how he first got involved with prisons, what the main challenges facing prisoners are when it comes to finance and what support is available both inside and upon release.

28. Laudjah's Story

On this episode, Zak & Emma are joined by Laudjah who is sharing his story

Upon release from prison, Laudjah struggled to adapt financially to the new world he was facing. He went from working every hour possible, to some frivolous purchases before returning to a life of a crime. Laudjah used his next stint inside to prioritise getting things right in his life. He took courses to make himself more employable and had a plan for when he got out...

This time things are looking better for Laudjah, he is investing in himself and has a much better appreciation of money. His old life of selling drugs he says is 'beneath him' and he is doing everything he can to leave that in the past and move forward.

25. 3rd Party Mandates & Power of Attorney

It can be very difficult to manage your financial affairs while you're in prison so Zak & Emma are looking at a couple of possible solutions.

3rd Party Mandates are a way of giving a trusted person limited access to your bank or building society so they may be able to do simple things such as check balances and pay bills for you. Power of Attorney is a legal document and usually give the attorney much more control, these are normally set up when a person can no longer make sound decisions on their own

Zak & Emma explore the differences and restrictions and relate this to being in a prison environment

To mark the end of the tax year, Zak & Emma welcome tax specialist Paul Retout to the show. Paul was once referred to as the ‘Andy Dufresne’ of Brixton due to the tax clinics he held in the cells during his short stint inside. He has since set up ‘The Tax Academy’ and is now helping those with experience of the Criminal Justice System to get their tax affairs in order

Paul shares his story and gives practical advice on how to ensure you keep on top of your tax matters including why you should let HMRC know you're in prison, what support is available if you're looking to go self-employed and how to claim a rebate that you might be eligible for.

8. How to fill in a Budget Planner
