Constructed in fibreglass, installed temporarily for Earth Day 2020 at shore of the Salton Sea, now permanently in the town of Bombay Beach.

Calling to the waters that connect all life, Akasha is a symbol of hope and continuity – things slip through the cracks, life finds a way and through this unusual genesis new ideas are born. Where there is water there is life. This is about hope in a ‘hopeless’ place. At the shore of a dying sea, what can be done?

Hope is something that we extend before us, it is a brave anticipation. Balanced between an awareness of the present and an idea of a possible future, it is a kind of double vision. Akasha is gentle yet defiant, reaching and delving – an unfolding potential, a vision of the possible.

A lure cast to the beyond – to the unfolding depths of sky and earth.

Situated in an area where water once was, its form echoes the flows that have shaped landscapes which to us now appear dry. Akasha calls out to our innate belonging and participation in the processes which animate the world, reawakening our awareness of the continuity between all things — reminding us that it is to the expanse that our souls belong.

Next up in our Bombay Beach series is writer and philosopher Eric Kaplan. He's so profoundly got his shit together he sent in a proper bio!

A native of Flatbush, New York, Eric Kaplan began writing for Spy magazine and the Harvard Lampoon before getting his first television-writing job on The Late Show with David Letterman. Before THE BIG BANG THEORY, he worked on other shows including Futurama (for which he won an Emmy), Flight of the Conchords, Malcolm in the Middle, and Andy Richter Controls the Universe. Kaplan created "Zombie College" for icebox and co-created "The Drinky Crow Show" and "Mongo Wrestling Alliance" for Adult Swim through his company Mirari Films. Kaplan has his PhD from UC Berkeley in philosophy on the comic in the philosophy of Soren Kierkegaard. His book Does Santa Exist: A Philosophical Investigation was published by Dutton in 2014 and has been called by Matt Groening "the funniest philosophy book since...well, ever." His science fiction and philosophy have appeared in the New York Times.

We touched on philosophy, writing, comedy, summer camp, and the many blindspots in my worldview. We completely failed to talk about his inherited collection of blues records, his daring and courageous work in the Himalayas, and what it's like hosting a podcast with Tao Ruspoli. What are dreams?

According to Shakespeare, they are the very stuff we are made of. To Joseph Campbell, a dream is a personalized myth—and a myth a depersonalized dream. Both communicate in the same way, through a story, through imagery, which some may deem as the realm of pure fantasy but which is, in fact, more real and truer than true than many may care to admit. However, dreams and myths are not literal—and in a time when people are literally obsessed with literalism, it’s only too easy to shrug them off as meaningless junk. It’s just the brain’s way of processing what happened during the day and nothing else. But dreams are more than that—they are a subterranean mycelial network of connections, the deep underground roots we don’t see on the surface in the light of day but that give us all the nutrients we need to survive. Whether we remember them or not, they are providing us with much-needed sustenance and repair. But when we do remember them and pay them the respect and attention they deserve, something remarkable begins to happen. We are bringing some of those deep dark depths to light, which in turn means bringing ourselves more fully to life. It is a blossoming. A dream has very personal connotations but can also hold deep meaning for another. Many of us have similar recurring themes and experiences. In sharing them, we honor their existence, and can spark a remembering in another person. In a time of extreme disconnect, I believe this remembering is one of the most important things in the world. But not only that, sharing dreams is a lot of fun. Because, who writes this stuff anyway? That is the very reason for this segment, just the sheer joy of sharing dreams. We are not trying to pin anything down through interpretation or analysis, just appreciating the masterful art of the mysterious dreamweaver at work.

A few days later, sitting in a little studio near Joshua Tree National Park, he schooled me on pallet structures, living in India, teaching valuable software development skills to young people, having only one short career, and the joy of riding electric unicycles! We met J.D. in Joshua Tree over Christmas. We spent a few days camped across the road from him in a campground, and bonded over a jar of pickled green beans. In fact, meeting J.D. helped inspire this podcast! J.D. is one bad-ass climber, currently seeking endorsement deals. We met up with J.D. in Vedauwoo, WY on our way south, and we are super glad we did.

J.D. was camped out and had been climbing with a few new friends, including this weeks other guest, Devin Fin. Devin is a professional rock climber, and something of a luminary in the sport of '“of-width” climbing. Don’t know what “off-width” means? No worries, all you have to do is sit back, maybe smoke a little jazz cabbage, and these two charming characters will tell you all about it.

We talked about climbing, native culture, pro-deals, living on the road, and how to charm the police if visiting while Dutch. We had a blast with these two, we think you will too!

This week we are happy to bring you this gem from Salt Spring Island, British Columbia; a conversation with our new pal, Gary! We met Gary at his shop on the island, Rainbow Road Trading. After about 7 minutes of talking, he invited us over for dinner. We accepted, and are so glad we did. Gary is fascinating, his wife is a sweet and lovely woman who knows her way around a great meal, and their home is an amazing refuge for cats, dogs, and sheep. They were incredibly kind, generous and fun to be around. We hope you enjoy this one as much as we did.

He is also a true pioneer of responsible finance and has dedicated his life's work to making wealth do as little harm as possible. We sat down with Joel at his home on Cortes Island, BC and had a little chat about life, death, clean money, fiction, happiness, the past, the future, and what it takes to not be a terrible ancestor.
