Twenty years ago, when hijacked planes felled the World Trade Center in New York, it was as though American life froze in place. International travel all but stopped in the aftermath of the attack. U.S. airspace closed completely. Elections were postponed. And a week of NCAA football was canceled.

The following week's slate of college football games was scheduled to begin on Thursday, September 20th, with a matchup between the South Carolina and Mississippi State.

MS Spotlight - 3/24/20: Commissioner of Insurance Discusses Medicaid and Expansion

The federal pandemic relief bill contains a big incentive for states that haven't expanded Medicaid. Mississippi is one of 12 states holding out on the expansion. State Insurance Commissioner, Mike Chaney, says currently the federal government pays about 80 cents on the dollar for Medicaid coverage. If Mississippi were to expand, that amount would increase to 95 cents. Chaney says Medicaid expansion could provide health care coverage options for those who do not currently qualify under the Affordable Care Act.

In a special broadcast one year after the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic, reporters from public radio stations in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana reflect on the toll it’s taken on the region.

On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization officially declared COVID-19 a pandemic. The first case in Louisiana was March 9, Mississippi confirmed its first case on March 11, and the first case in Alabama was announced on March 13.

Since then, more than a million people in Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana have been diagnosed with the coronavirus. Tens of thousands of lives have been lost. So many aspects of life have been transformed.

In a special broadcast, “A Year Like No Other: COVID-19 In The Gulf States,” we examine what’s changed and what may never be the same.

During a week when many of us are reflecting and marking anniversaries, reporters from WWNO in Louisiana, WBHM in Alabama and Mississippi Public Broadcasting are revisiting big stories they’ve covered during the pandemic and checking in with people they’ve met along the way.

These stations are working with NPR in a regional collaboration called the Gulf States Newsroom.

Dr. Tim Alford knew that Mississippians were struggling to get health care before he began working in the emergency room in Kosciusko five years ago.

It’s far worse than he thought, said the longtime family physician and past president of the Mississippi State Medical Association. “People are not being able to get their primary care, so they default to the emergency room. People are flocking here because so many people are locked out of the system.”

MS Spotlight - 1/20/21: Renewed Fight to Expand Medicaid

Mississippi's rural hospitals were facing challenges before the coronavirus pandemic began last year. Questions regarding their viability surfaced regularly, and some, like North Oak Regional Medical Center in Tate County closed down due to mismanagement. Now, the current pandemic is adding new financial obstacles with limitations on elective surgeries and an influx of un or under-insured patients.

For years a collection of health professionals and state lawmakers have sought to solve this problem by advocating the expansion of Medicaid. Supports say the federal program would inject over a billion dollars into the state's health care system. We talk to Tim Moore of the Mississippi Hospital Association and Senator Hob Bryan (D).

"Behind the Mask"; Experts say more Mississippians are experiencing symptoms of mental illness

As MPB's Ashley Norwood reports, experts say more Mississippians are experiencing symptoms of mental illness than they were pre- coronavirus pandemic.

Mental health experts in Mississippi say feelings of anxiety and depression are common among residents during the coronavirus pandemic. The top contributors include changes in employment, children learning from home, fears about one's own health and in Kimar Cain's case the loss of a loved one.

"I've had one good ugly cry, understanding that I won't see this person again for as long as I have life," said Cain.

Cain is an elementary school teacher in Natchez. In April, his father died after more than a week of fighting complications from the coronavirus. He says it still feels unreal and he's seeking mental therapy to help him come to grips with his loss and other emotions brought on by the pandemic. But in the mean time, Cain says there are a few things keeping him sane.

"Reading books, staying active, working out, riding my bike, deep breath exercises... things like that," said Cain. "That helps me remain at peace and keep my mind in good standing with all the chaos going on."

Molly Taylor with the state department of mental health is encouraging Mississippians to utilize therapy and other mental health services in the state. Through a $1.6 million grant, the department funded 15 providers across the state to further offer mental health services to residents in need.

"There is help available and asking for help is not a sign of weakness but one of strength," said Taylor. "It can be uncomfortable to ask for help, but just like physical health conditions mental health conditions need treatment to get better."

Moderna COVID-19 vaccines expected in Mississippi next week

Hospitals across Mississippi are administering the first coronavirus vaccines to front-line healthcare workers caring for COVID-19 patients. But there are not enough doses for every hospital in the state.

State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs says Mississippi's original allocation of 25,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine was lower than anticipated. "So we had to switch some hospitals off of Pfizer to Moderna," says Dr. Dobbs. "A lot of the hospitals are thankful for that because the storage requirements for the Moderna are so much more simple. So it puts us a few days behind for some locations, but with some gains in ease of use. We'll get it out as quickly as we can."

This was the first week of distribution of a vaccine. State Epidemiologist Dr. Paul Byers says it is not known yet how many doses the state will receive the Moderna vaccine and additional rounds of the Pfizer vaccine. "We don't have a clear picture of what the allocations are going to look like down the road, but we do expect for at least the next few weeks we should be getting some weekly allocations," says Dr. Byers. " What the actual number is, we don't know yet until we get them."

Studies of the Moderna vaccine found it to be 94% effective in preventing COVID-19, and health officials say the data looks very promising.

Distribution of the Moderna vaccine will be conducted by McKesson, a pharmaceutical company with distribution centers based in north Mississippi.
