These electrical messages instruct the body to perform various tasks, such as movement or thought.</p><br><p>Most healthy fibres are insulated by myelin, a fatty substance which aids the flow of messages. If the insulating flex breaks, it exposes the wires underneath making them more vulnerable to damage.</p><br><p>A diagnosis of MS will bring up lots of questions and concerns; some practical, some more emotional and sensitive. MS Ireland has compiled a list of commonly asked first questions about the condition. 			<description><![CDATA[<p>MS Ireland has some amazing service providers and today we are highlighting the work of the wonderful Mindfulness Coach Olive Houston and you will also get to hear testimonials from two of her clients Allen Foley and Theresa Mooney. </p><br><p><strong>Mindfulness with Olive Houston</strong></p><p>Based in Dundalk, Co. Louth, Olive offers classes, workshops and retreats to community groups and organisation’s, both in person and online. Olive also offers individual, 1:1 sessions. Her background includes Nursing in the UK and Ireland; Creative Mindfulness course Trainer, Advisor and Practitioner.</p><br><p>Olive has been delivering her “Introduction to Mindfulness” online course to participants within the MS Society community since 2020. The classes have been a wonderful support to those attending as they offer an opportunity to cultivate a personal practice of Mindfulness and Compassion and help participants connect, share and support each other, from the comfort of their own homes. </p><br><p>Following on from the success of these classes, Olive also developed a follow-on set of sessions, “Time to Rest”, to further support participants as they continue to grow their practice personally and together in the group setting.</p><br><p>The classes are suitable for those new to the practice of Mindfulness and for those with prior experience, and while there is a plan each week, Olive will always listen to what the needs are at each session and respond accordingly. </p><br><p>Olive’s classes are based on her training with Louise Shanagher as part of Creative Mindfulness Ltd. He plays a vital role in advancing our capital projects and national initiatives, such as the MS Ireland National Conference. Maurice also lends his voice and insights to our community through his role as a podcast host—bringing stories and information to life.</p><br><p><strong>Paul Hatton</strong></p><p>We are delighted to introduce Paul Hatton from Perrigo. Perrigo has been one of the most significant financial supporters of our MS Care Centre for many years. Beyond generous donations, Perrigo have provided volunteer support, spearheaded by Paul himself. Paul’s commitment as a donor, volunteer, and advocate exemplifies true partnership and enduring friendship with our Care Centre.</p><br><p><strong>Lorna Preston</strong></p><p>Lorna is one of our newest befriending volunteers at the MS Ireland Care Centre in Rathgar. She dedicates her time during the week to support residents, assisting them with activities and outings in and around Dublin. Her warm and caring presence is already making a positive impact in the lives of those staying at the Centre.</p><br><p><strong>Rebecca Maguire</strong></p><p>Rebecca has volunteered with MS Ireland since 2019, serving on our Board of Directors and as Chairperson of the Research, Information and Communications Committee. As an Associate Professor of Psychology at Maynooth University, Rebecca has contributed her extensive academic expertise to help us evaluate our services and guide the development of new, evidence-based supports.</p><br><p><strong>Jillian O’Sullivan</strong></p><p>Jillian has been a cornerstone of the MS Ireland South Kerry Branch for many years. Serving as Treasurer, she manages the branch’s finances while also using her skills as an experienced event planner to organise vibrant social events for people with MS in her local community. He has a blog and podcast where he shares his experience of living with MS and chronic pain (www.a30minutelife.com).</p><br><p>Dr Jonathan Egan is an academic and chartered health and clinical psychologist. He has also trained in both attachment and affect phobia therapies. His research has been in relation to trauma, its effect on a person's psychophysiological well-being. 			<description><![CDATA[<p>In the eighth episode of the Progressive Multiple Sclerosis Webinar Series, Robert Joyce interviews Prof Susan Coote to learn how we can use physiotherapy to help progressive MS.</p><br><p>Robert Joyce was diagnosed with Relapsing Remitting MS in 1992 and now has Secondary Progressive MS. He has a blog and podcast where he shares his experience of living with MS and chronic pain (www.a30minutelife.com).</p><br><p>Dr Susan Coote is a physiotherapist specialising in neurological rehabilitation. For over 15 years she led the MS research team at UL researching the benefits of exercise and physical activity to reduce symptom severity and improve quality of life for people with neurological conditions living in the community.</p><p>Prof Coote has published over 70 research papers and received over €1.5m in research funding supervising many PhD students in the area of exercise and MS.</p><p>She currently works in MS Ireland running projects funded by SlainteCare integration fund, the Social Innovation Fund and Disability Services which implement into practice the research findings and learnings of the benefits of exercise.</p><hr><p style='color:grey; font-size:0.75em;'> Hosted on Acast. He has a blog and podcast where he shares his experience of living with MS and chronic pain (www.a30minutelife.com).</p><br><p>Dr FitzGerald's research focus is on developing an understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative disorders such as multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease. After graduating from NUI Galway with a BE (Industrial) in 1983 and an MSc in Biotechnology in 1985, she worked in the biotech sector for five years before returning to academia to copmlete a PhD in molecular biology at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. Dr FitzGerald returned to Ireland in 2003, taking up a&nbsp;lectureship in biomedical engineering at NUIG in 2005. Since then the main focus of the FitzGerald group has been multiple scelosis and other brain disorders including Parkinson's disease. The group has also studied the normal development of the cerebellum.</p><br><p>Dr FitzGerald is the Director of the Galway Neuroscience and she represents MS Ireland on the MS International Federation's International Medical and Scientific Board. She has also recently joined the committee of the Dementia and Neurodegeneratin Network, Ireland. He has a blog and podcast where he shares his experience of living with MS and chronic pain (www.a30minutelife.com).</p><br><p>Dr FitzGerald's research focus is on developing an understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative disorders such as multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease. After graduating from NUI Galway with a BE (Industrial) in 1983 and an MSc in Biotechnology in 1985, she worked in the biotech sector for five years before returning to academia to copmlete a PhD in molecular biology at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. Dr FitzGerald returned to Ireland in 2003, taking up a&nbsp;lectureship in biomedical engineering at NUIG in 2005. Since then the main focus of the FitzGerald group has been multiple scelosis and other brain disorders including Parkinson's disease. The group has also studied the normal development of the cerebellum.</p><br><p>Dr FitzGerald is the Director of the Galway Neuroscience and she represents MS Ireland on the MS International Federation's International Medical and Scientific Board. She has also recently joined the committee of the Dementia and Neurodegeneratin Network, Ireland. In this episode we discuss how it is a team effort between the cared and the carer.</p><br><p>Robert Joyce was diagnosed with Relapsing Remitting MS in 1992 and now has Secondary Progressive MS. He has a blog and podcast where he shares his experience of living with MS and chronic pain (www.a30minutelife.com).</p><br><p>Dr Jonathan Egan is an academic and chartered health and clinical psychologist. He has also trained in both attachment and affect phobia therapies. His research has been in relation to trauma, its effect on a person's psychophysiological well-being.
