In 1 John 4:1-6, John exhorts his readers not to believe every "spirit", but to "test the spirits to see whether they are from God". He is referring to the motivating or controlling spirit behind a human being - especially leaders or teachers who profess to be speaking on behalf of God. Before we entrust ourselves to someone, or engage with what they are teaching, we must discern what kind of spirit they are speaking from. Is it the Spirit of God, or the spirit of the world? John warns us not to be taken in by "false prophets" who present the wrong view of Jesus and preach the wrong gospel.

This is the first of a two-part conclusion to our Isaiah series. In the closing chapters of Isaiah, we find God's "Endgame" - a dramatic foretelling of the final victory of God over evil and the establishment of his kingdom. Isaiah expected this to happen in one single great event, but the unexpected "twist" was that the kingdom, which burst into the world through the cross and resurrection of Jesus, will only be finally consummated when Jesus returns. Meanwhile, you live in an "unfinished story" in the overlap of two "ages". Victory is assured, but God is using the interim to shape you and to use you to help implement the victory of his cross in lives and communities, whilst awaiting the triumphant and decisive return of Christ when he will sweep away the old age for ever.

In a stunning move, predicted in Isaiah 45, God used a pagan emperor - Cyrus - to fulfil his purposes and bring his Old Testament people back from exile. The ability of God to bring change, even when he is not acknowledged, should greatly encourage us as we look at the world of politics today. It also reminds us how God can and does use imperfect people - like us - to achieve what he has planned.
