Both the client and I smiled softly. We knew the deeper meaning of these sentences. This was a follow-up conversation after the discovery call I had with a client in June 2023. The client wanted to be coached but was hesitant because of the inner work she was supposed to do between sessions.

Further conversation gave her the clarity into taking up coaching, we just completed the first agreement last month – 1 year of coaching journey.

We met over a coffee during the weekend as a catch-up call after a few weeks’ gap – which I diligently do to check their energy when they are away from the coaching space. Any form of unnecessary dependency is not good for my client's growth.

“Suba, remember me talking about the dragons last year, I am glad I chose to come out of my shell and so allowed the dragons to come out too. And, you must write about it in your newsletter.” we both laughed out loud as she said that.

Growth is a delicate dance where you balance risk and rewards, stability and change, pushing forward yet controlling, and challenges and opportunities knocking on the same door.

When it comes to Leadership Growth, one may have to dance with two left or right feet too.

A few reasons frequently pop up in my coaching conversations why ‘RESISTANCE’ is part of the DNA of many leaders today

* Difficulty moving away from established routines and practices

* Disagreement on goals and resource allocation within the leadership team

* Skepticism or unwillingness from stakeholders to support new initiatives

* Reluctance to take risks or make bold decisions due to potential negative outcomes

* Challenges in delegating responsibilities and trusting team members

* Difficulty aligning new strategies with existing organizational culture or values

* Hesitance to address or act on critical feedback from employees or peers

* Resistance to upskilling or training due to perceived inadequacy or discomfort

* Avoiding difficult conversations or decisions to prevent disagreements or tension

• The team may become fatigued due to the constant pressure to work long hours and meet the boss’s unrealistic expectations.

• The mental and physical health of the team can be affected by the high-pressure environment created by an obsessive boss.

• A healthy work-life balance can challenge the team when the boss expects them to always be available and prioritize work over personal life.

☀This relentless pressure to meet unrealistic standards without positive reinforcement erodes their confidence and motivation.

☀Team members may become overly cautious, stifling creativity and innovation.

☀This atmosphere h]ampers individual performance and affects team productivity, leading to frustration and burnout.

☀The lack of recognition and support results in emotional hashtag#exhaustion.

☀Teams expend significant emotional energy trying to meet their boss’s expectations without a respite.

☀Over time, this leads to severe burnout, characterized by physical fatigue, mental exhaustion, and a sense of helplessness.

Let me share some signs of hypercritical bosses.

❎They focus excessively on faults and mistakes, overlooking any positive aspects. This behavior is evident when they regularly point out errors in other’s work, even minor or insignificant ones, and rarely praise them.

❎They set unrealistic standards that are difficult or impossible to meet. Such behavior leads to disregarding the effort and progress made by the teams.

❎They tend to micromanage (in the name of feed-forward), taking control of tasks that should be delegated and constantly checking in on every detail.

❎Their lack of trust in their team’s abilities contributes to a stressful and demotivating work environment.

Why do they do that?

1.      They derive satisfaction and purpose from uplifting others, believing they must solve problems and meet demands.

2.      Childhood conditioning plays a role too; early experiences may have taught them that their worth is tied to their ability to help and be responsible. They have seen their parents, relatives, neighbors, and teachers behave in certain ways and perceive that to be the way of living, kind of role-modeling them.

3.      Deep-seated fears of rejection and low self-worth further drive them to take on more than they can handle, believing their value depends on their usefulness. Additionally, a need to maintain control over situations to prevent chaos often leads them to overextend themselves.

We are exploring the Taskmaster Personality in this video.

☀Constantly juggling multiple tasks and taking on extra responsibilities leading to heightened stress levels, causing you to become more irritable and short-tempered in both professional and personal interactions.

Are you blaming ‘Menopause’ (if you are a female) or ‘mid-life crisis’ (all genders) for your mood swings? Check it out.

Constantly masking your true feelings can lead to workplace conflicts. In this first post of the series, I focus on how 'faking it all' leads to burnout-induced conflicts.

"Faking it" at work, whether it's putting on a smile when you're struggling or pretending to be fine when you're overwhelmed, can be a slippery slope to burnout.

Many of us fall into this trap, suffocating under the weight of our pretense. We distance ourselves from our work, doubting our abilities and losing sight of what truly matters. Agree?

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐭 𝐚 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐧𝐨𝐰?

☀Faking it requires significant emotional labor. You may feel increasingly drained and unable to summon the enthusiasm or energy needed to tackle your tasks.

☀You feel disconnected from your work, colleagues, and your professional responsibilities.

☀You start to doubt your abilities and value as a professional, leading to feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt.

☀You become more critical of your surroundings and colleagues and develop a negative outlook on your work environment.

She loves contributing to nation-building activities and is also IT Co-Chairman for the South India Chapter of the Association of Chambers and Commerce. She is also an active speaker in Data and Analytics in various external forums. Dharani was awarded the Grand Champion Award for Leadership in SAP Labs India and the Top 3 finalist at the Women in Tech Award from Wequity in 2022. Outside of work, she enjoys yoga and gardening.

What is Nishta?

I launched Nishta – a Talk Show in 2020 with the intention to Demystify Leadership. I invited Industry leaders and brought out perspectives, thoughts, and experiences on Leadership through their journeys. A great story, journey, and rough & tough paths are expressed authentically and genuinely.

Active in different communities and networks, including being VP at the Cornell Club of Mumbai, Kritika has Master's degree in journalism from UT Austin and undergrad in computer science from India. If one were to put art and science together - that's her background.
