Nutrition: The Missing Link in Obesity and Diabetes Treatment

In the opening episode of the 2026 NNEdPro podcast series co-hosts, Dr Eoin Ryan and Professor Shumone Ray are joined by Oxfordshire Primary Care Doctor, Dr Ellen Fallows, and Nutrition Science Communications expert, Ben Atkinson, to explore the evolving role of incretin-based therapies particularly in the management of obesity.

The discussion highlights how these medications are transforming treatment by supporting weight loss through appetite suppression, but raises concerns about a critical gap: nutrition. The speakers emphasise that many clinical trials and real-world practices overlook nutritional quality, despite growing evidence of widespread deficiencies and poor dietary patterns.

In this second episode of our series on dietitians in medical nutrition education, Elaine Macaninch RD spoke with Dr Duane Mellor RD. Dr Mellor is a UK Registered Dietitian and a Senior Teaching Fellow at Aston Medical School. He has published over 60 papers in the fields of dietetics, nutrition and food science. Having spent the first decade of his career working in diabetes care as a dietitian he moved into research where he investigated the effects of dark chocolate on cardiovascular risk in people with type 2 diabetes. Recently he has moved into medical education at Aston Medical School, but still is active in diabetes care as part of the Diabetes UK Nutrition Working Group and British Dietetic Association Diabetes Special Interest Group committee.
