The Leap Home

(Recorded on June 1, 2025) Up this week is the final episode of the 1991, cult classic tv show Dark Shadows, that we’re lovingly calling, “The Leap Home.” While Victoria sits in her jail cell, Joshua and Peter are the defying the laws of time and distance to get a stay of execution from the Governor. Naomi hears her son calling to her through his portrait and finds him crying in the old house. Abigail gets her just deserts (and Barnabas just gets dessert). We finally find out what happened to Sarah (it’s not good). Barnabas and Ben team up one last time and it has Reverend Trask doing backsies on that whole “Victoria Winters is a witch thing.” Peter hand delivers a letter to the judge exonerating his client but things are never that simple when Angelique is around. Barnabas wants his father to put him out of his misery, but Joshua can’t bring himself to do it. In 1991, Angelique has found a new host and poor Phyllis is the object of her rage. Victoria resigns herself to he fate, but there’s a last ditch effort in 1991 to try and get her home. Plus, Meaghan uses some witchcraft of her own, George does the Stonk, and we talk 18th century medicine—it’s surprising anyone made it out alive! (Original network airdate March 22, 1991)

(Recorded May 25, 2025) Up this week is episode eleven (ep 12 for the purposes of the tile) of the 90’s tv show, Dark Shadows, which we're dubbing, “If The Dress Doesn’t Fit, You Must Acquit.” It’s the trial of the century (the 18th century) and Victoria is finally having her day in court. Peter is representing her as she stands accused of being a witch. A totally normal thing back then because America has alway been weird. This trial has everything: wigs, tiny little straw dolls, men in pilgrim costumes, and scorned lover back from the dead. And while all of this is going on, the rest of the gang works to get Josette safely through her fifth night in Collinwood. Unfortunately, since she let Barnabas go to town on her neck, she’s under his spell. He beckons her to be by his side for all eternity, but will she be a runaway bride? Plus, Meaghan has a bone to pick with George; George meets a real live Barnabas; and we throw in as much O.J. content as we can. (Original network airdate March 11, 1991)

Are You There God? It's Me, Barnabas.

(Recorded May 18, 2025) Up this week is episode ten (ep 11 for the purposes of the tile) of the 90’s tv show, Dark Shadows, that we’re calling, “Are You There God? It’s Me, Barnabas.” Peter shares the Collinsport Family History Book with Countess Natalie, who struggles to believe it contains the truth. Joshua calls a house meeting and tells everyone they’re moving into the new Collinwood, the current place has bad juju. Barnabas has sailed to England, and by England we mean his father placed is coffin in the family mausoleum. Barnabas wakes up hungry and goes out for a bite. Abigail invites Reverend Trask over so they can continue to blame Victoria for everything even though she is still in Lockup: Collinsport. Natalie convinces Josette that they must leave, but Josette goes to the old house looking for her music box, but finds an old flame instead. Plus, George and Meaghan discuss their seasonal allergies, dark money in politics, and if Josette and Barnabas are playing a game of, “no, I’m sorry!” (Original network airdate March 8, 1991)

Single White Female

(Recorded May 11, 2025) Up this week is episode nine (ep ten on the tile, but you get it) of the 90’s tv show, Dark Shadows, that we’ve dubbed, “Single White Female.” The Collins family buries their hottest son, Jeremiah (but will he stay buried?) and Aunt Abigail calls in Reverend Trask not perform the service, but to arrest Victoria for witchcraft! Angelique, the real witch works up another spell, but this time it goes a bit awry. Barnabas finally takes a little bit of responsibility for the mess he’s caused but still lets Josette feel like it might have been all her fault. We learn that Peter is also a lawyer. A lawyer, honey! This man is now the best catch in Collinsport and we’re the only ones that can see it! In 1991, Phyllis is on deaths door (what kind of doctor is Julia again?) and the gang decides to hold another séance. The last one went so well they decided to do it again! And this time, instead of someone leaving, someone comes back. Plus, Meaghan figures out her villain origin story (hint: it involves the DMV), George tells us how he got to live out his Road House fantasy, and we debate some time travel theories. There Can Be Only One

(Recorded May 4, 2025) This week we are discussing episode eight (ep nine for the purposes of this podcast) of the cult classic revival of Dark Shadows, that we’re calling, “There Can Be Only One," and boy is it a doozy. Josette finally arrives to Collinwood and we finally find out the origin story for that stupid music box. While Barnabas rolls around in the grass with Josette, Angelique doesn’t even wait a day to cast a spell that will ruin his life in many ways. Victoria stays not beating the allegations that she’s insane and a witch (and that’s not even because she taught the children Over the Rainbow). Jeremiah keeps being hot (the brocade vest somehow makes him hotter?) and unfortunately, that hotness leads to his downfall. Plus, Meaghan discovers a late 80’s gem, George does the Bartman, and we discuss what would've been a more satisfying approach to ruining a life had we been Angelique. We’re introduced to the Collins family in 1790 as Victoria Winters is hurled back in time via a séance gone wrong. Victoria stumbles her way into the position of tutor at Collinwood (with the help of a very handsome Peter Bradford). Barnabas keeps telling everyone how much Victoria looks like Josette (we get it dude!). We finally meet Barnabas’s hot brother, Jeremiah and the fact that is just now showing up is a real disservice to the show. Barnabas’s nosey Aunt Abigail can’t help but think there is something off about Victoria and enlists the help of Reverend Trask. And Angelique does her best to seduce Barnabas but when things go wrong she finds her own minion in Ben Loomis. Plus, George has a lot of thoughts on theaters that are also restaurants; Meaghan tries her hand at a French accent; and we both think Angelique is going after the wrong brother. The Nanny Diaries

Victoria isn’t the only new person in town, cousin Barnabas from England has also arrived, coincidentally at the same time a bunch of bad stuff starts happening! Shockingly, the police aren’t very good at putting these two things together.

Also, Meaghan and George discuss the relatively new OJ Simpson documentary on Netflix; George is blown away by a young Joseph Gordon Levitt performance; and Meaghan is tired of men’s daddy issues. (Original network air date January 13, 1991)

Serenity — Part Two

Up this week, we have our second and final part recapping the Firefly movie, “Serenity.” Last week we left off with Mal finally meeting the Operative and Inara coming back aboard Serenity. The group (minus River) have a house meeting, where Jayne actually makes some pretty good points about how River is a liability and can take care of herself. Mal is turned all the way up in the brooding department after Jayne says he could captain this boat better than Mal. Jayne has a botched attempt at kidnapping River (she bests him) and she is loose on the ship for all of two seconds before Mal finds her surfing AOL to find Miranda—a black-rocked planet just this side of Reaver-land. Now this is where the story takes a bit of sharp turn to ‘huh?’ territory. We lose a well-loved character; we get a convoluted backstory about the origin of Reavers; we’re supposed to believe that the Alliance cares that River knew about this deep down; we lose ANOTHER well-loved character; we get some good fight scenes; and then it just sort of ends. Of course there’s things tying all of these together but it’s all very strange. Does it make for a bad movie over all? You’ll have to listen to hear our thoughts on that. Plus, Meaghan tries to manifest the comeback of America’s Next Top Model. George wonders where his nerd-brain went. And we ask ourselves if we’d watch “Serenity: The Sequel.”

Serenity - Part One

This week we are digging into the first half (well first 55 minutes) of the Firefly movie, “Serenity.” We’ve got a new—in the words of George— big bad, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, who really brings a whole new level to this universe. Simon is turned up to eleven and it makes us wonder where that energy was in the Firefly series. Mal is obviously sad that Inara left the ship and is taking it out on everyone else. Zoe is wondering what happened to the Mal that would never leave a man behind. Kaylee says something that made us go “what in the what??”. Jayne says something that makes us go, “of course he would say that”. Wash is there, being the supportive husband we all know and love. And River is out there kicking major butt. Now you may be thinking, aren’t George and Meaghan huge fans of Shepherd? Why wasn’t he mentioned? And to that I say, he shows up about 45 minutes into the movie and we found that to be very annoying! Why are they hiding one of the best characters?! Anyways…there are reavers, subliminal messages, and a set of British (did the monarchy make it to space?) twins who add a bit of flair to the movie. We’ll be handing out awards for biggest winners and losers in the first half as well as letter grades (and we’ll try not to take off too many points for lack of Shepherd).

Also, Meaghan questions if there is a new TikTok challenge happening; George hopes for “Serenity” to turn into a rom-com; and we discuss why there are still batteries in the 26th century.

Objects in Space

We did it - we made it the fourteenth and final (don’t worry, we’re not abandoning you just yet) episode of Firefly, “Objects in Space.” If you’re looking for a typical series finale where story lines are wrapped up in a nice little bow, this episode of television might disappoint you. If you’re living in an alternate reality where this is a season finale and they're going to bring back Firefly for a season two decades later, then this episode is really isn’t that bad. River walks through the ship listening in on various conversations between crew members. While eavesdropping she has moments where she hears and sees the crew saying things not heard by the other person, and everyone remains unaware of her presence. Simon implies he’d still be a doctor if it wasn’t for her; Shepherd says something that implies a not-so-religious past; Mal and Inara voice frustrations over their Sam and Diane dynamic. River overwhelmed by everyone's feelings, rushes down to the cargo bay and steps on a branch. When she picks it up—she's suddenly surrounded by orange leaves on the floor. A few seconds later we are thrust back into the real world and River is holding a gun while the rest of the crew surrounds her, yelling at her to put it down. After she runs back to her room, we see a small vessel tailing Serenity and a man (bounty hunter Jubel Early) inside looking at the wanted bulletin for the Tam siblings. Later the crew grapples with whether it’s safe to have River on the ship—River is listening through the floor and Early is listening through the hull of the ship. As the crew goes to bed, Early enters ship and starts taking the crew out one by one—first Mal (a little to easily if we’re being honest!), quickly locking some people in their quarters after; then Kaylee (which we have some thoughts on because ugh); he gets Shepherd with a kick to the head; and finally he comes across Simon who he uses as bait to try and lure River out to him. We don’t want to give too much away here, but the gist is River is no longer a person, she’s turned into Serenity. You’ll have to listen to find out how true that statement is—with River, anything is possible! Plus, George and Meaghan talk “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story; Meaghan’s loser takes George by surprise; and we discuss what a Firefly season two might have looked like.

Heart of Gold

This week we are rounding third and talking about episode thirteen of Firefly, “Heart of Gold,” and boy is it a weird one. We’re visiting yet another desert locale in space, but this one has a brothel covered in tin foil, run by former companion, Nandi; and a local land owner, Rance Burgess, who must have seen Road House at some point (J.C. Penney is coming here, because of me!). Rance shows up at the brothel looking for one of Nandi’s employees Petaline. Petaline is pregnant and Rance is determined to prove the baby is his. Nandi video calls Inara, asking for help (much like when Dalton called in Wade Garrett for back up when dealing with Brad Wesley). Inara volunteers the Serenity crew and since they have nothing else lined up, they agree. When they get to The Chicken Ranch, Jayne makes a beeline for the girls, Shepherd tries to make a sandwich, Kaylee asks Wash to tell her she’s pretty, and Simon (with River in tow) goes to examine Petaline. Nandi explains the situation to Mal, Zoe, and Inara—that Rance keeps the people in the town poor, so he can live out his Road House fantasy. Later, Mal and Inara meet Rance at a local theater (and if we weren’t already clear on how Rance views women, this part helps clarify: he hates them). Mal and Inara leave, and Mal realizing Rance is a monster tells Inara that everyone should pack up and leave this hellhole. Rance gets a call from Maury saying “YOU ARE THE FATHER.” Nandi can’t be convinced to leave and Mal in a moment of ‘stupid recognizes stupid’ agrees to stay and help fight. The main bullet points after this are: Zoe tells Wash it’s time to start trying for a baby; Mal sleeps with Nandi; Inara cries when she finds out; River doesn’t know where babies come from; and we meet a winner of the local Lacey Chabert look-alike contest. We end on a bit of a cliffhanger, which neither of us are sure will even be mentioned in the fourteenth and final episode.

Plus, George and Meaghan workshop their Firefly spinoff about Shepherd Book; George regales us with the trials and tribulations of getting the best burger in NYC; and by the end of the episode, Meaghan can’t stop laughing.

The Message

(Recorded on September 29, 2024) This week we’re discussing episode twelve of Firefly, “The Message.” While at the local mall, the crew stops by the post office (convenient!) to see if any of their Amazon orders came in. Jayne gets a letter from his mom (that he either struggles to read or she struggled to write) and a homemade hat. Mal and Zoe get a crate a with a body inside! We flashback to seven years prior and learn that the body is of a former independence soldier named Tracey that fought alongside them. Once they're done reminiscing, the post master reminds them that it’s illegal to transport a body through the mail (still!?) and they need to GTFO. Back on Serenity the crew discover an ancient device called a sony minidisc player containing a message (or THE message) in Tracey’s crate. Now, if you think this message is going to lead into sensitive discussions about readjusting to life after war, you’re going to be disappointed! The message is good, but the follow through is bad. Tracey fell in with some bad folk and now other bad folk are looking for him; like some alliance feds at the post office threatening to light the post master on fire (the best of the threats, seriously) if he tells Mal they're looking for that crate. They track Serenity down and Mal figures this a good time to cut Tracey open to see what’s inside - but guess what! Tracey’s actually alive and just smuggling lab grown organs in his own body that will then be removed and replaced with his own (we’re not kidding). Mal has Tracey hide—Kaylee volunteers her room because she’s got a crush and is very mad at Simon! Shepherd sniffs out some sneaky behavior on the alliance officer’s part and helps devise a plan. Unfortunately, Tracey only hears half that plan and goes off the rails and tries to take down everyone with him.

Plus, Meaghan talks about her love for Tropic Thunder; George comes close to getting canceled; and we discuss the perils of tripping on the sidewalk at our advanced ages. (Original network air date July 15, 2003)

Trash

(Recorded on September 22, 2024) **Promo for The Delicious Recap podcast included in this episode** Up this week we are digging into episode eleven of Firefly, “Trash.” That’s right folks, we are in the home stretch! Mal is doing business with his old war pal, Monty (sans soup catcher, gag) when he’s introduced to Monty’s wife Bridget. But listeners, Monty’s wife Bridget, is actually Mal’s wife—that’s right Saffron is back (loud boos and cheers). Mal and Saffron scuffle while Monty stands by confused but not at all bothered by Mal beating up his wife. Eventually Monty realizes that Bridget is not who she says she is and kicks her off his ship, unfortunately sticking her with Mal. Saffron teases Mal with a ‘million square job’ while he tries to get away from her. On Serenity, Inara tells Mal she’s in dire need of work and if he could stop doing these tiny jobs that make them no money, that would be great. Mal digs Saffron out of a bin in the cargo bay (what was she doing all that time!?) and asks her about this job. We get a bit of the same stuff as in ‘Ariel’ (but not as good) with Saffron explaining the job—stealing an antique laser pistol from rich a-hole Durran Haymer—while showing how it could work. Everyone is like, “what’s she doing here?” but in the end they all need money and agree to work with her. While in the middle of stealing the pistol, Durran walks in, shocked that he’s being robbed, but even MORE shocked that his wife Yolanda has returned. That’s right, Saffron is Yolanda! Keep up everyone! She turns on Mal, but then Durran comes back and she turns on him and is back to being partners with Mal long enough to try and screw him over. BUT the Serenity crew is playing some 4-D chess and Saffron/Bridget/Yolanda ends up stuck in a dumpster, where she belongs. Also, Simon finally realizes that Jayne tried to sell him and sister out—about f’ing time!

Plus, George gives us another white guy on his mom’s list of approved white guys; Meaghan wonders which episode made execs at Fox go, ‘ENOUGH!”; and we wonder if Christina Hendricks still has her syfy genre award from 2006. (Original network air date July 21, 2003)

War Stories

(Recorded on September 15, 2024) Up this week we’re discussing episode ten, “War Stories,” of the cult class Firefly. Shepherd is back (yay!) from is monastic vacation and he seems refreshed. Simon is still trying to cure his sister’s…broken amygdala? Not sure if that’s something that can be fixed, but you do you. Jayne’s maybe feeling a little guilty for almost getting everyone killed and bought the crew (checks notes) a crate of apples. Inara tries to keep everyone from gawking at her client, “the councillor, although she might have better luck if her client wasn’t a woman! There’s a lot shocked faces and Jayne keeps talking about how he’ll be in his bunk (please make it stop). And you can all rest assured that this storyline is written with grace and not at all in a way for the 13 year old boys watching in 2002 (that’s sarcasm, in case you were wondering). While all of this is going on, Wash and Zoe are fighting because Wash is insecure and Zoe shares too many stories about her and Mal. Wash forces his way into a business excursion with Mal and immediately regrets it once they're kidnapped by Niska’s men. Yes, Adelai Niska is back and he has a torture chamber—very 50 Shades of him. Unfortunately Niska’s fun is ruined by Mal and Wash arguing about who Zoe loves more—way to kill the vibe guys. Zoe realizes something is wrong and puts two and two together to realize that both of her husbands have been taken. She rounds up some money from the rest of the crew to buy them back, but Niska only lets her choose one. Zoe chooses Wash, knowing that he is not a man built for days of torture. Do they go back to rescue Mal? Well there’s 4 more episodes and a movie so it’s an obvious yes, but they all mount up like Regulators to do it, so that’s fun!

Plus, George tells us about his bowling tournament; Meaghan talks about her favorite Catfish episode; and if you’ve ever wondered what happened to Shan Yu from Mulan, boy are you in for a treat this week! (Original network air date December 6, 2002)

Ariel

(Recorded on September 7, 2024) No Season Two is back from our mid-season break and we’re talking about episode nine of Firefly, “Ariel.” The Serenity crew is heading to the allied world Ariel, so Inara can get her government mandated physical exam to renew her companion license (the future sounds awful! but also familiar, womp womp). Before they can touch down on Ariel, River slashes Jayne across the chest with a butcher’s knife (you go girl!) and Jayne does not take it well! Mal realizes River is getting worse and has her confined to her quarters. The next day while the gang is playing a game of horseshoe and bemoaning their lack of money-making endeavors, Simon waltzes in with a proposition for them: get him into the hospital in Ariel City so he can find out what’s wrong with his sister (diagnosis: A LOT) and they will have access to all the pharmaceuticals they want to resell on the black market. Ladies and germs, we have a heist! And not the sad heist that was in “The Train Job.” This a bonafide heist with an Ocean’s 11 montage. Things go perfectly at first—Simon finds out that the alliance turned River’s amygdala into mush, and Zoe and Mal are able to snag all the drugs. Unfortunately for everyone, Jayne is a part of their crew and he called the feds to turn in Simon and River for some reward money. Of course Jayne didn’t think (big obviously here) that this plan would backfire, but it does spectacularly. The blue glove guys show up turning people's brains into pools of blood, but before they can get to Simon and River, Mal and Zoe come to the rescue. Back on the ship Mal pulls a “you did it to me!” with Jayne while threatening to have him sucked out into space. But does he do it? No. But it’s fun to watch Jayne think he’s a goner.

Also, George shares one his favorite summer past times; Meaghan won’t shut up about the tv show OZ (trust us, it will make sense); and we both try to figure out what is going on with the hospitals in the 26th century (Seinfeld voice). (Original network air date November 15, 2002)

Out of Gas

(Recorded on August 11, 2024) This week we’re digging into episode eight of Firefly, “Out of Gas.” This is the episode that we have been waiting for—the episode that makes us go, “okay, we can see why people would like this show.” The title is misleading, because it’s not gas they’re running out of, it’s oxygen. And the clock is ticking! The catalyzer on Serenity is blown out causing the engine to offline and life support functions to fail. Mal makes the decision to stay behind on the ship to wait for a response to their distress beacon, while sending the crew away on two separate shuttles. The episode goes back and forth between the past, almost present, and actual present. In the past, we get flashbacks of Mal showing Zoe the newly purchased Serenity (she’s not impressed), Mal and Zoe meeting Wash (also not impressed), the ships old mechanic Bester (wtf), how Kaylee ended up on the ship (HATED IT), and Zoe and Mal meeting Jayne for the first time (it’s about how you would imagine). In the not-so-present, there’s a birthday dinner, an explosion, Zoe saving Kaylee from a fireball, River terrorizing Shepherd, Mal almost fighting Wash, and Mal being ambushed by an early aughts steampunk band. In the present-present it’s just Mal fighting for his life on an empty Serenity. There are six more episodes and movie so of course Mal lives, but it’s about the journey (to use George’s favorite word). Of course not every episode is perfect—even one we both enjoyed. So if you tune in just to hear us find something to tear into, we will definitely be doing that with Kaylee’s flashback! It’s just a lot! We have some big winners and just one big loser (if you’ve watched, can you guess?). Also, George and Meaghan discuss Olympic events (sort of topical!); Meaghan might have hit a record for most pop culture references in a synopsis; and we think about how if they had cast Michael Biehn in this episode, it would have been off the charts. Jaynestown

(Recorded on August 4, 2024) Up this week is episode seven of Firefly, “Jaynestown.” The crew are headed to Canton, a town who survives on the export of mud and slave labor. Who do they think they are, Shein? Jayne disguised as the REI Lawerence of Arabia, doesn’t want to go because he previously robbed the town’s magistrate—a man named Higgins, whose sole focus in this episode is getting his 26 year old son, Fess, laid (weird!). While Mal, Wash, Jayne, Kaylee, and Simon journey to town, Zoe and Shepherd stay on the ship with River. After meeting the foreman of the mud plantation, the crew stumbles on a statue of Jayne, made out of what else, mud. Simon seems most dumbfounded, making some of campiest shocked faces we’ve seen in the serious so far. They visit a local tavern and while imbibing in mudders milk (I hope it’s pasteurized) they’re treated to a musical performance by a local. The song, Hero of Canton is about Jayne—describing how he robbed from Higgins and then rained the money down on the towns people. Obviously that is only half true, as Jayne only dumped the money so his ship wouldn’t crash (and that’s not the only thing he dumped!). The mudders discover Jayne is back and boy are they happy to see him. Higgins, while waiting for his son to lose his cherry (his words, not mine) to Inara finds out that Jayne is back in Canton. Higgins, unlocks Encino Man from a wooden box and is like, “go on, git! you know what you need to do!” Ladies and germs, that man is Stitch Hessian, Jayne’s former partner who he also dumped from his ship. Obviously he as an axe to grind! There’s a pretty good fight scene (I’ll give them that) and then Jayne holds a republican press conference telling everyone to stop waiting for a handout and get a job! They have a job, they just don't get paid, Jayne!! While all of this is going on, Kaylee is trying to flirt with Simon (awkwardly). And River is being kind of racist??

Also, George implores Meaghan to watch the movie Heat; Meaghan is offended that George questioned her boyband knowledge; and they both encourage everyone to listen to Give It To You. (Original network air date October 18, 2002)

Our Mrs. Reynolds

(Recorded on July 21st, 2024) This week we are talking about episode six of Firefly, “Our Mrs. Reynolds.” While at a party, thrown in their honor for ridding the town of ruthless bandits, Mal gets drunk and spends his time flirting and dancing with a local woman. The next day, after they’ve left the town that JD Vance grew up in, Mal discovers a woman in the cargo bay of Serenity, who claims to be his new wife Saffron. Shepherd informs Mal that unfortunately he’s an idiot and everything he did with Saffron last night, was a marriage ceremony in her culture. And while it’s never good to trick someone into marriage, it’s definitely always good to google a place before you visit it. Saffron, upset that Mal isn’t thrilled about being a newlywed, runs off to cry in a hallway. Mal tries to be nice while telling her he’d make a terrible husband and that sort of honesty apparently works for Saffron, because she goes to make him a meal. Shepherd tells Mal there’s a special place in hell for him (not the same place for women who don’t support other women) if he takes advantage of her. Are we forgetting that this marriage was not consensual? Now this is where the episode takes a turn for the tradwife algorithm on TikTok. Saffron wants to please her husband with her cooking, washing his feet (barf), listening to his boring stories about childhood, telling him she prayed for someone like him, and of course wedding night you-know-what. Going so far as to quote from a bible (not sure if it’s THE bible) about how he should furrow with the plow—IT’S A LOT. Of course Mal, a man, can’t resist and kisses her. He probably would have furrowed his plow if the kiss hadn’t drugged him causing him to pass out. Saffron is a villain - and this feels like some kind of allegory on Whedon’s part that women can’t be trusted, but I DIGRESS. She tries the same on Wash, but ends up having to kick him in the head. Her whole plan was to just reroute the ship to some guys who would strip it for parts—which for the thrill, I guess. Before she abandons ship, she runs into Inara and tries to seduce her (which George loved OBVIOUSLY), but Inara is smarter than both Mal and Wash so it doesn’t work. Unfortunately Inara doesn’t seem great at hand-to-hand combat so Saffron gets away…or does she?

All you really need to know is that George thrived watching the episode and Meaghan barely survived. (Original network air date October 4, 2002)

Safe

(Recorded on July 14, 2024) Up this week is “Safe,” the fifth episode of Firefly. If you were wondering what the Serenity crew was going to do with that cattle from last week, this is the episode for you. If you love Zac Efron, this episode for you. And if you were wondering what Shepherd looks like without his shirt on, this episode is definitely for you. We kick off the episode with some Simon and River backstory and get more throughout. This is all to set up how far Simon would go to protect his sister (a little heavy handed, but we did ask for more backstory, so that’s on us). Moving on! Serenity has landed on a backwoods planet to unload the cattle; unfortunately they didn’t check their source box for any travel advisories in Jiangyin. While half the crew stay back to offload the cattle, Kaylee, Inara, Simon, and River head into town. At a shop Simon, proceeds to unintentionally insult everything Kaylee likes which obviously upsets her! Inara and Kaylee leave and River wanders off and finds herself a local LARPing community. Back at the OK Corral, the cattle sale goes awry when the local police show up to arrest the buyers. In the melee, Shepherd gets shot (by who, it’s not clear). River’s spidey senses are tingling, but before her and Simon can leave Shakespeare in the Park, they’re kidnapped—by the people that the travel advisory was warning about! The rest of the crew can’t wait around to look for them and take off to find Shepherd help. Unfortunately, Simon and River see Serenity leave them, ouch. The Serenity crew seek help at an Alliance station, but before they can be turned away Shepherd pulls out his Obamacare card and they rush him to treatment. Simon is just settling into his role as Doc Hollywood (is this thing on?) when his sister is accused of being a witch! Before the town can get out their s’mores kits, Mal and the rest of the crew come to rescue them. If only Joan of Arc had been so lucky.

George comes to the realization that if he gives up on a coherent story line he enjoys the show; Meaghan doesn’t understand why we’re making up new words to describe things that already existed; and we say goodbye to our girl, Shannen Dorehty. (Original network air date November 8, 2002)

Shindig

(Recorded on June 30th, 2024) We’re back this week with episode four of Firefly, “Shindig.” We learn some new things this week, like: the 26th century has slave traders, men throw around the word ‘whore’ just as liberally in the 26th century as they do in the 21st, and Badger’s back (resounding BOOOOO). We’re in Persephone again—Serenity needs to refuel and Mal needs to find his next job (on the level or off) and Inara has been engaged to accompany Atherton Wing while in town. This ruffles Mal’s feathers (because it’s OBVIOUS he likes her) so he spends the majority of the episode being a real a-hole. Unfortunately Atherton is also an a-hole, just with more money. If we were hoping men were better in space, we’d be wrong. Mal has to attend a ball (the same ball that Inara is at with Atherton) to track down Sir Warick Harrow, someone who wisely won’t do business directly with Badger. He brings Kaylee, someone he insulted earlier, with him. At the ball Mal asks Atherton’s permission to dance with Inara and what is he going to do, say no? Inara tells Mal that Atherton wants her to become his personal companion (insert Ghost ‘you in danger girl’ gif). Atherton breaks up their dance telling Mal she’s bought and paid for (gross) and Mal punches him. And apparently in the future that means you’ve challenged someone to a duel. Later that evening Inara graciously tries to help Mal learn how to sword fight but all he does insult her. The next morning we’re in the English countryside section of Persephone where Mal and Atherton briefly fight before Inara distracts Atherton enough for Mal to get the upper hand. Mal lets him live and in the process impresses Sir Warick enough to give Mal his business. Inara and Mal share some Boone’s Farm on Serenity later that evening, ostensibly making up. You maybe asking yourself what about everyone else on Serenity and to that we say, they weren’t interesting enough to include in this episode synopsis.

Also, Meaghan is confused about what century we are in; George compares and contrasts the dancing in Firefly with the dancing in Bridgerton; and we seriously consider starting a Hitch podcast. (Original network air date November 1, 2002)

Bushwhacked

(Recorded on June 23rd, 2024) This week we’ve got “Bushwhacked,” episode three of Firefly. We’re finally seeing that space is actually scary and not just because of the mining activity that will turn you into soup. The Serenity crew comes across what they think is an abandoned settler ship and under the guise of checking for life they go to raid the ship. River walks barefoot (please get the girl some shoes) on to the settler ship following…voices? It’s unclear. Through her telepathic investigative work we find out the passengers on this ship have been tortured, strung up, and left for dead. They find one survivor (who is not well!) hiding in the air ducts and bring him back to Serenity. Mal finally tells everyone it was Reavers (who’s backstory is woefully underdeveloped) who attacked the ship and they should get out of dodge. Before they can, the Alliance docks and boards Serenity accusing them of stealing (correct) and harboring two adult siblings (also correct). The Alliance commander Harkin takes the Serenity crew (minus Simon and River who are hiding on the outside of the ship?) in for questioning, along with the lone survivor of the settler ship to medical treatment. Harkin does some lackluster interrogation work before being informed that the survivor has murdered the doctors helping him—not cool bro! Mal realizes the survivor has become a Reaver (see now this is an origin story) and has gone back to the Serenity ship. Mal, handcuffed, saves the Harkin’s life and the crew of the Serenity is allowed to go. I guess we just forgot all about the harboring fugitives bit, huh?

Also, Meaghan compares “Bushwhacked” to an episode of X-Files (though she confuses the name of the episode for a movie and doesn’t get the nationality of the ship’s crew correct—good work!); George won’t stand for Costner trash talk; and Meaghan blows George’s mind with her favorite Donald Sutherland movies. The Train Job

(Recorded on June 16th, 2024) Up this week is episode two, technically episode one, but really episode two of Firefly, “The Train Job.” No, they didn’t get new jobs as train conductors—we’re talking a heist. A heist gone wrong, but still a heist. The Serenity crew do a job for Adelai Niska, 26th century Russian crime boss (still? how?). They don’t ask questions, which maybe they should have? Because then they wouldn’t have stolen vital medication for an entire population. While Zoe and Mal are being detained by the town’s sheriff, Mal sees the havoc he’s wreaked on this dusty and ailing town and starts to feel guilty. Inara uses her status as a Companion to bail out Mal and Zoe and bring them back to the ship. Mal has a change of heart about his criminal activities and returns the medicine they stole but not before Niska’s gaggle of goons tries to stop him. Our anti-hero overcomes and the town no longer has to worry about their bones and muscles turning into soup.

Also, George and Meaghan can’t stop talking about OJ; Meaghan has some thoughts on the theme song; and George shares his feelings on the youth of today. (Original network air date September 20th, 2002)

Pilot - Serenity

(Recorded on June 9th, 2024) We’re officially back and kicking off our second season with Firefly’s pilot episode, ‘Serenity’ (not to be confused with the movie ‘Serenity,’ which we were close to doing). There’s a lot going on in this too long 90 minute episode. We meet the crew of the firefly ship Serenity with little to no backstory causing our wikipedia senses to tingle. Mal is cosplaying as Han Solo, Zoe still calls him ‘Sir’ (in front of her husband and pilot of the ship, Wash), Kaylee, our ‘is she a child or is she an adult’ engineer, and of course Jayne someone you’d rather hurl into space than travel in space with. They pick up a few passengers in Persephone, a preacher, a guy with a not at all suspicious crate, and Ramon from Seinfeld. We get an awkward dinner, a ‘what’s in the box?’ moment, a shoot-out in the space equivalent of Arizona, and Reavers (they’re super bad, okay?). This episode is jam-packed but still makes us go, how did we get here?

Also,George and Meaghan discuss some highlights of Adam Baldwin’s film career; George is here for the world building; Meaghan is worried that Firefly fans will come after her if she doesn’t like the show; and we delve into the accusations portion of Joss Whedon’s wikipedia. In Dreams Begin Responsibilities

(Recorded on November 19th, 2023) Well, we’ve made to episode nineteen, the series finale of My So-Called Life, “In Dreams Begin Responsibilities.” Jordan is trying to get Angela back and much like in her dreams, he seems incapable of apologizing. He enlists the help of Brian and we get “Cyrano De Bergerac: Liberty High” (sadly not added to abc’s Fall ‘95 lineup). Brian does his best to feed Jordan some lines he can remember and Angela buys it enough to tell Jordan that now they can have “a serious talk.” Jordan, who lacks the capacity to take accountability for his actions, convinces Brian (it wasn’t a hard sell) to write the world’s worst love letter to Angela. Since Angela is in high school, the letter makes her forget that Jordan had sex with her best friend. Angela only realizes that Brian wrote the letter in the last few minutes of the show (come on girl! This guy couldn’t even spell your name right!) but still drives off with Jordan. The investors of the restaurant want Graham out of the picture but Hallie thinks that if can just cook for them, they’ll be blown away enough to forget that he’s never run a professional kitchen in his life. It works, because this is not reality. Graham and Hallie embrace for a second too long for it to still be considered a friendly hug. Patty invites her high school boyfriend, Tony Poole, to the house under the pretenses of him having restaurant experience. He’s a no show, but the 1995 version of him (Jordan) shows up and proceeds to drink every ounce of milk they have in the house. Patty, forgetting that this 30 year old sophomore slept with her daughters best friend, says that it’s “clear [he] didn’t mean to hurt her.” Like WTF, Patty!?! Rickie comes out with the help of Delia and this is really the only story line that matters to us. George gives us a very hot take on who he thinks the show is actually about. Meaghan rejects that very hot take. And we discuss the importance of LGBTQIA+ representation in media in 1995. (Original network air date January 26th, 1995)

Weekend

(Recorded on November 5th, 2023) This week, we’ve got the eighteenth episode of My So-Called Life, “Weekend.” Patty and Graham are headed to the saddest inn this side of the Allegheny River with Uncle Neil and his surprise girlfriend, Cheryl. While packing for the trip, Camille offers Patty her handcuffs—let’s hope she sanitizes after each use. When Graham comes into the room, Patty ends up hiding the handcuffs underneath the 500 decorative pillows on her bed. Patty finally learns that Hallie is no longer engaged and you can hear her screaming internally. At the inn, Patty wants to do activities and the rest of the crew want to get drunk and abandon her to find alcohol, since they are staying at the only dry inn in the western hemisphere. Instead of ice skating, Patty spends her afternoon sitting on a couch in the common area and annoying Warren the inn keeper, a man not suited for the hospitality industry. At dinner, Patty deals with her abandonment issues by getting drunk on contraband ginger flavored brandy to prove to everyone that she’s not a stick-in-the-mud (it only sort of works). Back at the Chase house, Rickie is spending the weekend with Angela and Danielle. While he’s there, Rayanne drops by under the guise of trying to collect $6 from him (but we all know she wants to see Angela). Of course she finds the handcuffs and and proceeds to handcuff herself to the bed. Too bad Patty accidentally brought the key with her to the worst inn in Pennsylvania. Angela, Rickie, Danielle, Sharon, and eventually Brian spend the rest of the weekend trying to free Rayanne from the headboard; all that’s missing is the Benny Hill theme. We have some wildcards for our biggest winners and losers; and we are treated to a quintessential 90’s needle drop. Meaghan and George discuss the Milli Vanilli documentary (love!); Graham licking Patty’s jaw (definitely don’t love); why there wasn’t any alcohol at this inn (Warren is a buzzkill); and how we would have preferred if Uncle Neil was played by Jon Lovitz. Betrayal

(Recorded on October 29th, 2023) Up this week we are digging into episode seventeen of My So-Called Life, “Betrayal” and boy is it a doozy. Angela is totally over Jordan (whatever you say girl), Rayanne is auditioning for the school play, Sharon gave Brian a camcorder (big mistake), and Corey Helfrick is back with a brand new look (#basic). Sadly Corey’s style change is the not the only betrayal in the episode; Rayanne and Jordan finally go big in the messing up department and hook up in the back of his car. And we wish we could say that’s the worst part of the whole thing, but it was caught on camera (not accidentally!!!) by Brian. This leads Angela to have a bit of a breakdown and do her best Rayanne impersonation. In the process, Angela freaks Corey out and hurts Rickie’s feelings (unforgivable). Rayanne shows up at the Chase house and tells Patty (for some reason) what she did. Patty is unfazed by this because she too had a bit of a hoe era and slept with one of Camille’s crushes. Elsewhere in adult land, Graham, a man who has only ever cooked for his family and Hallie, a woman who can’t remember where she’s supposed to meet her business partner, are still somehow doing this restaurant together. Hallie’s inability to remember where she’s supposed to meet Graham gives Camille an opportunity to instantly hate her on behalf of Patty like a real friend (and not like one who sleeps with their bff’s crush). Patty suggest another couples date not knowing that Hallie is now Brad-less; because why would Graham tell Patty anything? There’s obviously some runaway nominees for biggest loser in this episode, but will they win? George and Meaghan (neither are legal scholars) discuss the legality of filming two people (underage!) doing it in the backseat of a car in 1995. George has a bone to pick with Hallie and her restaurant etiquette. And Meaghan asks the important question: What’s in Rayanne’s flask. (Original network air date January 12th, 1995)

Resolutions

(Recorded on October 22nd, 2023) This week we’re talking “Resolutions,” the sixteenth episode of My-So Called Life. It’s a new year and we're ready to party like it’s 1995! Everyone in Three Rivers is resolved to do something: Angela says she won’t do Jordan’s homework anymore (girl, really?); Rickie want’s to find a place where he’ll really fit in (ugh Rickie, don’t make us cry); Brian wants to stop obsessing over Angela (get a hobby other than perving then); and Sharon wants to stop having sex with Kyle (we support this). Patty wants to be less of a nag and Graham vows to tell Hallie that he won’t do the restaurant with her—which we thought he already did a few episodes ago. Mr. Katimski has given up coffee in the year of our lord, 1995, and boy was this a bad time to do that. With Angela no longer doing Jordan’s homework, she signs him up for peer tutoring and he’s paired with none other than Brian Krakow and just wait until you hear how Jordan pronounces that. Hallie convinces Graham to help her look at potential restaurant spaces and we learn that Brad hates these two as much as we do. The heart and soul of the episode is Rickie—nothing sarcastic to say here folks, unexpected, we know. Rickie leaves the Chase home after a week, thinking he’s not wanted. With no where to go he tells Mr. Katimski what’s going on. Mr. K, who should be in the running for teacher of the year, does his best to help Rickie. While things don’t go quite as planned, Rickie eventually ends up in the right place. George thinks it’s weird that Graham talks to Hallie on the phone like he’s some giddy school girl; Meaghan doesn’t understand how Sharon uses a Brad Pitt movie to get hot for Kyle; and we make our pick for the most stable relationship in Three Rivers—it’s definitely not Patty and Graham. So-Called Angels

(Recorded on October 15th, 2023) We’re back this week with episode fifteen of My So-Called Life, “So-Called Angels.” It’s Christmas in Three Rivers and all is not calm and bright. We’re blessed with a restaurant free storyline this week, but unfortunately, Rickie’s family has kicked him out of the house and he’s doing his best to pretend that things are FINE when things are obviously not fine. Angela wants to know why her family doesn’t go to church (hashtag: it's boring) and for the portion of the episode where she’s not fighting with Patty, she’s white savioring all over the place. Patty, who’s still feeling the sting of Amber Vallon telling her to “get off her high horse” doesn’t think that it’s their place to get involved with helping Rickie. Graham makes a Spike Lee joke without ever probably having seen a Spike Lee film. Danielle is taking the Christ out of Christmas; Brian is left alone for the holidays (even his parents don’t want to spend time with him); Rayanne turns Sharon’s teen help line into 1-800 line; and Jordan helps Rickie find a place to stay (not a great one, but still). We get some one and done characters: a cop who has to explain the difference between a “run away” and a “throw away” to Patty (must be nice in that bubble, Patty!) and Female Clarence™. Only one of those people will be getting their wings this Christmas! Meaghan and George discuss the bachelorette party situation in Nashville (harmless fun or an epidemic?); Meaghan admits that she cried during the episode (not such a Grinch after all, is she?!); and George, in the hopes of a Christmas miracle of his own, tries to revive the defunct clothing store Structure. On the Wagon

(Record on September 17th , 2023) Up this week is episode fourteen of My So-Called Life, “On the Wagon.” Jordan and Angela are “sort of” broken up, meaning that Angela now listens to all of his boring stories without the added benefit of a makeout sesh. Rayanne’s 33 days sober and desperate for attention. Tino’s quit the Frozen Embryos and Jordan’s got twenty, twenty, twenty-four hours to go until he needs to find a replacement for the ex-lead singer. And after seeing one of the band practices, we’re starting to get an idea as to why Tino wanted out. Rayanne tries to convince Angela to get Jordan to let her audition for the band and even Jordan, an adult man with a 1st grade reading level, knows it’s a bad idea. But Rayanne Yoko’s her way in via the drummer and they all spend approximately zero minutes practicing together before their big audition at Vertigo. Rayanne bombs and Jordan has to step in as singer leading us all to wonder why he just didn’t do that in the first place. Given Rayanne’s odd behavior, everyone thinks she’s headed towards a bender, but is she? Patty thinks she is (based on absolutely no evidence) and inserts herself into the situation. Patty eventually goes toe-to-toe with Amber and her blender and it’s no longer peaceful in Margaritaville. There’s a small pool for biggest winner leading both Meaghan and George to surprising choices. George asks if Jordan and Rayanne are good singers; Meaghan asks if Zack Attack is the better tv show band; and since Oliver Stone will never be on our podcast, we’re finally free to say what we think of his movies (hint: they’re too long!) Pressure

(Record on September 9th, 2023) We’re back this week with episode thirteen of My So-Called Life, “Pressure.” You may recall where we left off with the last episode; Jordan coming to a sudden realization that he should hold hands with Angela. Well, this relationship has accelerated at record speed. Jordan’s letting Angela drive his car—maybe he thinks that teaching her how to drive stick will subconsciously make her want to have sex with him. Jordan’s got two tickets to Pound Town but Angela isn’t sure she wants to join him. She seeks counsel in a few people: Sharon, who brings over her parents' instructional “intimacy” VHS, a tape so unsexy they could show it on ABC in 1994; and Rickie, who tells her that her first time should be like a miracle and not with someone who has been held back twice and cant read (kidding, he only said the first part). After Angela backs out of having sex with Jordan at an abandoned house (the miracle here would be not rolling over on to a rusty nail) we learn that his other philosophy in life is POGO—put out or get out. Hallie’s back and this time we meet her fiancé, Brad, who may or may not think that Graham is letting his 15 year old daughter date an adult. Hallie wants to open a restaurant with Graham as the chef (may we remind you: no credentials). Of course when Graham tells Patty she’s not excited and the cycle of their miserable marriage continues! George has a lot to say about Cynthia Hargrove, resident baddie at Liberty High. Meaghan isn’t quite sure what interests Jordan about Angela so much anyways. And as delicately as possible we try to figure out how far these two had gotten before the "going all the way" question was posed. Was it over or under the pants stuff? Self-Esteem

(Record on September 10th, 2023) Up this week is “Self-Esteem,” the twelfth episode of My So-Called Life. Angela and Jordan are making out in the school’s boiler room, not for the thrill of it, but because Jordan doesn’t want his friends to know about Angela. Rough! Angela invites herself to a Buffalo Tom concert to prove to Sharon and Rayanne that he’s not treating her like garbage only to have him treat her like garbage right in front of them. We learn that Jordan can’t spell Angela’s name and that Angela is a glutton for punishment. Liberty High finally replaces Ms. Mayhew (no word on if she’s still alive) with Mr. Katimski. Mr. Katimski desperately wants Rickie to join the drama club and will stop at nothing to get him to sign up—except calling him Enrique, he won’t stop doing that. Graham finally starts the cooking class that Patty signed him up for. He meets Hallie Lowenthal, a woman he describes as loud and obnoxious, so you know these two are already in love. Stephan Dieter, the teacher, is on the sauce (not spaghetti) and when he goes to rehab, Hallie convinces the school to let Graham, a man with no credentials of any kind, teach the class. We also get another round of Brian yelling at Angela in her house—someone please, arrest him. He gives Jordan a run for his money in the biggest loser category. George geeks out over Buffalo Tom, even going so far as to pull out a cassette tape. Meaghan talks about the bus route from Loserville to Liberty High—is it a direct route or are there stops? And finally we discuss Mrs. Lerner’s workplace flirtations—harmless or should HR get involved? (Original network air date November 17th, 1994)

Life of Brian

(Record on August 8th, 2023) This week, we're discussing episode eleven of My So-Called Life, “Life of Brian.” It’s a nightmare scenario for Meaghan, but she soldiers on. From the first scene to the last, Brian terrorizes us with his narration and bad decision making. We get two new students at Liberty High: Delia, who is crushing on Brian (for some reason) and Corey, an artsy student who wears a beret that has Rickie’s attention. Sharon is organizing the World Happiness Dance, but for some it will be the World Sadness Dance. Angela wants to ask Jordan, but do they let adults into high school dances? Brian debates asking Delia or Angela to the dance, turning to Graham for help; he of course is no help at all. At the dance, Rickie and Delia give us one of, if not the greatest dance performances ever to air on television. And we get an epic, epic needle drop. There’s a clear cut winner for biggest loser, but Graham really, really tries to steal the crown. He’s mad at Patty for suggesting community college for cooking classes when she knows future Kitchen Nightmares restaurant owner Graham wants to go to culinary school. Finally, we learn that the three worst men on the show all have the same philosophy in life. Also, George makes a shocking declaration—but by the end of the series, will he feel the same way? Meaghan finally admits something Jordan did was “kind of hot,” and we discuss George’s incredible high school fashion evolution. Learn how he went from Wu-Tang to Brian Krakow in just a few years. Other People's Mothers

In a grass is always greener sitch, Angela thinks Amber is not like other moms, she’s a cool mom. Rayanne get’s a birthday card with some money from her estranged father. Instead of taking Rickie’s advice to buy some makeup or a leather jacket, she decides to throw a party. With all the drugs and alcohol she can procure from the school parking lot you can imagine how this party goes. Patty is throwing a party of her own for her parents anniversary, which could have benefited from some tablets of Rayanne’s ecstasy. Patty comes to the rescue when Angela and Rickie need her help with Rayanne; who’s the cool mom now, Angela? We get a blissfully Krakow free episode and what we think may be a top needle drop moment. Also, George and Meaghan share their thoughts on Zach Braff (Jay Sherman Voice: He stinks!); if 90’s rock groups made a mistake adding reggae to their songs (yes); and we do our best to work out the timelines of the two parties in the episode. Halloween

If you’re curious what would happen if Graham ever dressed like a pirate, you’ll definitely regret it, however this episode is still for you. Strangers in the House

This sends Graham and Patty into a tailspin - Graham realizes he hates his job and Patty tries to fill her prescription for sexual healing. Sharon has to stay at the Chase house and Angela struggles to figure out how to say “I’m sorry your dad is in the hospital.” With everyone acting of out pocket this week, we set a new record for our Biggest Loser category. Meaghan talks about her 20 year high school reunion (hashtag old); George is into disco now (just a few years late); and in lieu of a needle drop moment we hypothesize what music Sharon is listening to on her discman—hint, it’s not Rage Against the Machine. Why Jordan Can't Read

(Recorded on June 19th, 2023) Up this week, episode seven of My So-Called Life, “Why Jordan Can’t Read.” Rayanne loses a letter Angela had written about Jordan. When Jordan finds it and returns it to Angela, he claims he didn’t read it, but she only believes him after basically making him confess he that he doesn’t know how to read. Angela without any kind of medical license diagnoses Jordan with Dyslexia. Angela, Rickie, and Rayanne go to Jordan’s band practice and hear him sing his new song “Red.” And unfortunately, Rickie convinces Angela it’s about her (spoiler alert: it’s not). Brian continues to give us reasons to hate him. And Patty thinks she might be pregnant. George and Meaghan talk about “OJ: Made in America.” We find out George has moved on from Brian and Rickie and is now ‘shipping Rickie and Jordan. And Meaghan doesn’t understand men and their cars. The Substitute

(Recorded on June 6th, 2023) If you loved films like Dead Poets Society, Dangerous Minds, and The Substitute film franchise, you’ll definitely love episode six of My So-Called Life, “The Substitute.” Ms. Mayhew, the English teacher has been missing from Liberty High for quite some time with no explanation. In her absence, we get introduced to Vic Racine, an unconventional substitute with two different colored socks. He’s not here to teach, he’s here to open minds and evade child support. Angela is moved to act by the injustice…of a poem not being allowed in the school’s literary magazine. And Jordan is given a Steinbeck novel by Vic, because when someone can’t read, that’s definitely where you start. George asks if Angela and Sharon’s poems were good; Meaghan can’t get over the fact that Vic abandoned his family; and we have our first ever reenactment of a scene from the episode. The annual Three Rivers Mother-Daughter Fashion Show has rolled into town, along with a zit on Angela’s chin. To make matters worse, Angela doesn’t make the Sophomore Girls List (created by Liberty High jocks) and starts thinking she may be ugly. Both Sharon and Rayanne make the list, to varying degrees of enthusiasm. Patty thinks she’s starting to look old and we’re starting to think there may be something in the water in Three Rivers making all the women and girls insecure. George has trouble connecting with the episode, maybe because he was never a teenage girl? And Meaghan unleashes the demons that have been haunting her since middle school, canceling a teacher or two in the process. (Original network airdate September 22nd, 1994)

Father Figures

(Recorded on May 28th, 2023) In Father Figures, the fourth episode of My So-Called Life, we get introduced to yet another terrible man in Patty’s life - her father Chuck. Due to his less than exemplary business practices, Patty must deal with an audit from the IRS. Graham has tickets to the Grateful Dead that he has to give up and passes them along to an ungrateful Angela and ecstatic Rayanne. Patty finds out and makes Graham do backsies on the tickets, but not before Angela sells them, upsetting both Graham and Rayanne. George heals (maybe) from some decades old roommate drama. And Meaghan tries to recover from the trauma of an episode full of Graham and Chuck. (Original network air date September 15th, 1994)

Brian thinks he might know who brought the gun to school, but will he tell Principal Foster? While all of this is going on, Angela is dealing with a rumor that she hooked up with Jordan. Angela finds out the rumor was started by someone close to her. Patty meets Rayanne’s mom Amber Vallon after a school town hall. George and Meaghan struggle to narrow down the field of biggest loser — in a nearly Graham-free episode the field is wide open. (Original network air date September 8th, 1994)

Dancing in the Dark

(Recorded on May 14th, 2023) In “Dancing in the Dark”, the second episode of My So-Called Life we’re introduced to Uncle Neil and we have a lot of thoughts about this member of the Chase family! Patty gets a haircut and Graham is on a life-long journey of becoming a decent human being. Rayanne gets Jordan to make a fake ID for Angela (who Jordan may or may not think is French). Brian ropes Angela into being his partner for a class assignment and Rickie and Rayanne commandeer his kitchen. Also in this episode of No Season Two, George and Meaghan discuss if it should take a lifetime for a man to become good; Meaghan trauma dumps her 5th grade experience on George; and George breaks down all the 90’s references (Dr. Quinn anyone?).
