No Age Ontology - The Buddhist Heavenly dimension of Total Bliss

Buddhist cosmology of the realms of existence of sentient beings shares many similarities with Hindu cosmology in terms of cycles of time and type of beings inhabiting those planes of existence, although the names and details can vary in each tradition. In spatial cosmology we find an explanation of three planes of existence in ascending order which comprise the dimensions of different types of living beings according to the Law of Cause and Effect and the Law of Vibration. What causes a specific dimension and Universe to manifest is the collective karma, or the sum of all habitual tendencies, disturbing emotions and actions related to the mind-consciousness of those living beings. In the Buddhist tradition the Buddha taught of the possibility to be born in a ‘Pure Land’ or a ‘Pure Dimension’, a kind of heavenly realm, where one can follow a spiritual path until total Awakening without experiencing any coarse suffering and without being reborn again within conditioned existence due to karma, causes and conditions.

No Age Ontology - Being helped is not being saved

From an Awakened view of Reality nobody is ever saved because Reality is timelessly free and unborn, there is nobody to be freed from anything and nobody to act as a giver of freedom; everything is the Ground of Timeless Pure Being and therefore a Timeless unborn freedom. From the relative perspective of sentient beings’ limited perception, because of the Law of Cause and Effect and interdependence, all beings, whether Awakened or trapped within illusory time, are interdependently connected within Timeless Pure Being and therefore one can receive help from Timeless Awakening and one can also give help to others once one has also Awakened to Timeless Pure Being. However, nobody can actively ‘save’ others from their perception of conditioned existence and rebirth, because Awakening is a completely individual experience.

No Age Ontology - Liberation from birth

All Wisdom teachings aim to reach Liberation from birth, impermanence, decay and death therefore also one’s aim should be directed at attaining Liberation from ‘compulsive’ or ‘cause driven’ birth. This doesn’t mean that once one has awakened to Timelessness one cannot be born if it is needed in order help others realize the same state of total freedom. Since one has reached Timeless Liberation for oneself, one has full access to enter time and space due to the inherent Compassion of the State of Timeless Being.

No Age Ontology - Manifestation without interruption

The Principle of Rhythm and Cyclicity reveals that everything in the physical, mental and spiritual plane of existence within time expresses itself in rhythm from action to reaction, from activity to inactivity with a ‘to and from’ movement, an inflow and an outflow, a swing forward and backward, an advance and a retreat, a rising and a sinking, a giving and a receiving. The very essence of the Play of Reality itself is an eternal spontaneous outpouring and an in-drawing of energy and manifestation appearing and dissolving without interruption and ‘ad infinitum’. This rhythmic motion is not necessarily always in a straight line; in fact it is usually in cycles. Cyclicity is only a more complex form of rhythm and is dependent on it. Ultimately, after fully Awakening to the Pure Ground of Timeless Enlightenment, the Principle of Rhythm is expressed in the activities of a fully Awakened One, emanating for the benefit of sentient beings (without ever leaving the Knowledge of the Timeless Ground of Being) and returning back to the Ground source of Pure Being of mere potentiality in a ceaseless play of dissolution and expansion beyond divisive dualities.

No Age Ontology - The unpredictability of rebirth

Another important implication of rebirth is its unpredictability. According to some spiritual teachings one follows a kind of evolutionary process from the most rudimentary to most advanced type of consciousness to finally Awaken to an Enlightened State. But actually rebirth might not be such a linear and straightforward kind of evolutionary process from lower to higher. For example, the Buddhist teachings make very clear that a human birth is an extremely rare event which is brought about by many different causes and conditions propelled by the subtle energy of virtuous habitual tendencies ‘stored’ in the ‘ground consciousness’. It all depends on many factors like the quality of the emotions experienced at the time of death, the strength of emotional tendencies accumulated during infinite past lives, but especially the last life, the actions that have actually been committed and above all the intentions behind each action.

It is quite common to question the reality of past lives when one has no memories of such events. But, actually, remembering a past life is just as difficult as remembering the details of each dream during one’s night-life. Upon awakening in the morning the memories of the dream content is quickly lost unless one has developed a deep clarity by practicing meditation or sleep yoga. Moreover, what is really passed on from lifetime to lifetime is not the memory of experiences and events which are illusory and dream-like, but rather, the habitual tendencies fuelled by the energy related to the five disturbing emotions.

No Age Ontology - Rebirth is the start of a new self-grasping perception

After a short or long period of non-perception following the death of the body-mind aggregate, if one has not recognized and gained Liberation within Timeless Awareness of Pure Being, a mind related new self-grasping perception arises out of the Timeless Ground of Pure Being. Since time is not a fixed parameter, especially in the intermediate state between births as a sentient being, there is no guarantee regarding the ‘date of rebirth’. This new perception could either be a sort continuation of the old past perception in a new body-mind aggregate or a completely new perception in a mind-body aggregate of a different class of sentient beings in a different epoch of time depending on infinite causes and conditions manifesting to the illusory perceiving consciousness in the intermediate state not yet entered into new physical body-mind perception.

No Age Ontology - The joy of Timelessness experienced within the suffering of conditioned existence

We have discovered how existence conditioned by self-grasping, time and space always contains an element of dissatisfaction, frustration, anxiety and suffering and only total Liberation within the realization of Timeless Awareness of Pure Being is the real state of freedom from suffering. However, even the two truths of suffering and Timeless joy are not mutually exclusive because within the recognition of Timelessness all appearances are viewed and experienced as ‘non-existing illusions’ and in that recognition lies the supreme joy that doesn’t need to ‘cancel out’ the appearing aspect of conditioned existence within time and space.

The stable recognition of one’s natural Awareness of Pure Being is beyond grasping at the identity of subject, object and action and therefore ‘actionless actions’ manifest according to the circumstances which present themselves in one’s field of perception. This is not the normal action-reaction that we are normally accustomed to in general but a fresh non-reactive behaviour which brings light, clarity and awareness to the whole event within time and space.

Awakening to one’s Timeless nature of Pure Being doesn’t require a rejection of one’s individual relative personality while one is still in a body-mind aggregate form among other beings. The personality is not something fixed, is simply a continuum of traits and preferences which are ever changing and which are produced by causes and conditions. One should always try to act according to circumstances, doing one’s best to alleviate suffering and develop a positive attitude and sometime this requires mind trainings and meditation. Awakening to Timelessness doesn’t equate with annihilation into the oblivion of nothingness.

It is very common in a society built on the value of ‘doing and achieving’ to fall and be trapped by the feelings of worthlessness and uselessness which bring depression and sadness. On a relative level one could overcome these feelings using any skilful methods related to modern psychotherapy or any spiritual mind training in order to inspire oneself with feelings of confidence and independence. However one should also reflect and ponder on the worthiness of ‘Simply Being’ even if one is not able to recognize the Timeless Mind of Pure Being directly as a personal experience yet.

The tendency to claim ownership toward perceived objects is entirely due to the mind’s grasping at an independent identity separated from the perception of outer objects. This is the root of all malevolent actions instigated by the disturbing emotions of jealousy, envy, attachment and hatred. On a relative level nobody owns anything, not even one’s own body and thoughts; everything is ‘on loan’ as an illusory display created and experienced by the Mind of Pure Being beyond the distinction of self and other. At the same time and without contradiction, in each moment of recognition of Timeless Pure Being everything is already ‘one’s own’, the objects of the senses are already one’s own self-appearances, therefore there is no desire to claim any superimposed ownership toward appearances.

Punishment as a form of education, or re-education, is a sociological attitude rooted in rudimentary religious dogma and based on the misconception and erroneous understanding of the Principle of Cause and Effect. The Laws of Reality including the Law of Cause and Effect are not ruled by disturbing emotions but rooted in love and compassion, whereas punishment is always driven by resentment, envy, fear, mistrust and hatred and therefore can never bring a positive outcome.

The Mind of Pure Being is pervaded by the spontaneous qualities of Love and Compassion. This is not an objectified state of love toward a specific animate or inanimate object, but an all-pervading immutable state, like space, not distorted by emotional upheavals. This is a spontaneous state of loving kindness that radiates from self-knowing Timeless Awareness and it is not dependent on causes or circumstances within time. However, until one arrives at this level of Wisdom knowledge, it is always important to develop the qualities of love, kindness and compassion using the skilful mind trainings found in spiritual teachings, meditation manuals and modern psychotherapy.

A healthy competitive mind is for example a mind of an individual involved in sport or game activities where the individual can express the joy and fun of competing with others, and where the psychological direct or indirect training of such activities involves accepting failures without harboring negative and resentful feelings. In other contexts, and especially in social or religious positions of power, competitiveness is never associated with positive outcomes. This is because competitiveness in these fields can easily trigger and foster disturbing emotions like jealousy, envy, pride, hatred, greed, deceitfulness which usually create further suffering.

Since everything is impermanent, one’s qualities and powers at the very best might last only one lifetime and there is absolutely no guarantee regarding which qualities, if any, one will have in future lifetimes. Even within one lifetime things can change drastically and dramatically, one’s qualities might even become the source of one’s suffering. Since everything depends on the Laws of Reality and infinite causes and conditions, there is no use of feeling proud or arrogant regarding one’s circumstantial qualities.

The best and foremost way to help others is to see them as they really are, reflections of Pure Being, just like oneself, knowing that reflections always manifest the same attributes and qualities as their source, all beings are in fact now and always the totality of the Mind of Pure Being. The training consists in not perceiving sentient beings as they seem to be manifesting superficially and temporarily due to their self-grasping personality and disturbing emotions, but to see them as they really are in their fundamental nature, embodying the qualities of Pure Being such as Wisdom, Love, and Compassion.

Forgiving others doesn’t mean forgetting whatever wrong they might have done to us nor to continue being involved in the same situations helplessly. One can acknowledge and distance oneself from the agent of wrongdoing, take all the necessary steps of action and then, after some time, try letting go in one’s own mind to all the negative emotions related to such experience. To keep the resentment would simply be allowing the perpetrator to continue inflicting harm on oneself even after the actual physical and emotional action itself have ended.

By being Timeless and lacking intrinsic identity, all appearances are pure from the very moment they appear and remain pure until they dissolve in the same Timeless Space of Pure Being.

No Age Ontology - Compassion is not pity

Compassion and pity are both emotions that involve empathy and concern for others, but they differ greatly in their underlying motivations and effects on the individual experiencing these emotions. Compassion is a deep feeling of understanding and empathy for the suffering or struggles of others. It fosters a sense of deep connection between individuals, and it is rooted in respect and the acknowledgement of the inherent worth and equality of the being experiencing difficulty or suffering. Pity can be disempowering, as it may reinforce a sense of helplessness or victimhood in the person receiving pity. It can create a sense of distance between the person feeling pity and the one receiving it. It may lead to viewing the person as less capable or worthy of respect and it can sometimes come across as condescending, as it may imply a feeling of superiority in the person expressing pity.

In the multidimensional Universe there is a principle at work which one can call the ‘Law of Compensation’ which states that the appearance of a given amount of energy somewhere means the disappearance of the same amount somewhere else, and so we ﬁnd that we can only get what we give. If we pledge ourselves to a certain action we must be prepared to assume the responsibility for the development of that action which will come about through the Law of Cause and Effect. In Buddhism, for example, compassionate action and the realization of Timeless Reality are intimately connected and mutually sustaining.

No Age Ontology - Personal and social responsibility through Cause and Effect

Nothing ever ‘happens’ by chance but there is always a cause or rather a chain of causes and conditions behind it. According to the Principle of Cause and Effect no event produces another event, but is merely a preceding link in the great orderly chain of events flowing from the creative Timeless and Causeless Principle of Pure Being. There is continuity and interdependence between all events and also a relation existing between everything that has gone before, and everything that follows. There is usually a time gap between the cause and the effect which always depends on many secondary conditions in order to manifest. Sometimes secondary conditions favor the activation of more negative causes to manifest and sometimes they favor more positive causes, but sooner or later all causes will manifest as effects and shape one’s own self-perception of Reality.

No Age Ontology guiding principles may seem to share some similarities with both Solipsism and Existentialism in terms of scepticism towards the traditional concepts describing objective reality, but, as we will see, there are also key differences between these ontological and philosophical systems. First and foremost No Age Ontology doesn’t claim to be a philosophical system of thought nor an intellectual theory but rather a compendium of Wisdom ontological teachings pointing to a Timeless aspect of Reality. The Timeless Sound of Reality is the ‘Loudest Silence’ in which all events and meanings are infinitely present as potentialities. One can access this Timeless Sound through the recognition of the Timeless Mind of Pure Being where everything is and is not at the same time. The Timeless Sound of Reality is expressed in the Principle of Vibration and can be found in many different Wisdom and spiritual traditions. On a more relative and practical level sound is all penetrating and therefore has the capacity to affect mind and objects. In many Wisdom traditions sound is used as prayers or mantra repetitions sometimes with this aim.

Spiritual teachings and philosophies have always attracted human beings disappointed and dissatisfied with the suffering of their existence, and in many cases this has resulted in great spiritual awakenings. At the same time there has always been a danger of pursuing spiritual paths with hedonistic purposes as what the great Teacher Chögyam Trungpa referred to as ‘spiritual materialism’. Having been let down by the ordinary way of living, one chooses a spiritual path solely with the scope of finding happiness or sometimes power for oneself using all sorts of spiritual methods without any knowledge, not even on an intellectual level, of what Enlightenment and Liberation really mean. There can never be any Liberation nor Enlightenment realized by a self-grasping entity but only a sad realization of ‘egohood’.

No Age Ontology - The unrealistic fantasy of a ‘one sided’ self-appearing Reality

The mind’s self-manifested appearances within conditioned existence always follow the alternation of opposites according to the Principle of Rhythm, Ciclicity, Vibration, Cause and Effect. According to the cosmology of some eastern Wisdom traditions on a macrocosmic scale epochs of heaven-like appearances in the human dimension slowly degenerate into hellish dimensions of existence to then slowly improve back to the same heaven-like appearances. To imagine a ‘one-sided’ Reality within conditioned existence is not realistic, it is simply not possible because conditioned appearances are dualistic in nature.

No Age Ontology - The habitual temptation to get attached to positive circumstances

When positive circumstances arise in one’s field of perception due to interdependent causes and conditions the mind automatically has the tendency to grasp at such appearances as stable and permanent, there is an obvious habitual tendency to forget the fact that every compounded phenomena is by nature impermanent. The remedy for this type of tendency is not to get depressed by overthinking about the nature of impermanence, but simply to enjoy whatever manifest within the knowledge of one’s Timeless Awareness of Pure Being, if one has acquired this capacity, without any grasping or attachment. If one hasn’t yet acquired this capacity, one should remain grounded in the present moment and enjoy whatever appearance is manifesting in one’s field of experience without conceptualizing and grasping to its duration, and also without the overexcitement of any expectation which can easily lead to disappointment.

No Age Ontology - Positive thinking is not escaping the present moment

Many confuse the positive thinking methods for a kind of ‘escapism’ from what is or denial of the negative and sometimes obvious manifestation of a circumstance which presents itself to the senses, but this is not the correct application of the positive thinking methods. In positive thinking one is not trying to consider every event arising in one’s perception as a positive event as opposed to a negative one because this would just be a state of confusion and absence of discriminating awareness. In positive thinking one is simply trying to shift one’s attention and awareness from a negative and destructive aspect of one’s own mind reaction to a more constructive one in order not to be completely overwhelmed and overcome by the situation and, when possible, in order to transform it into a less negative circumstance.

On a relative level, we need to consciously become our own project in life because if we do not take this to action, someone else will do it for us and we will never be truly free and joyful. On a more profound level, to become one’s own project really means to wake up permanently to one’s nature of Timeless Pure Being and be free from the bondage of the Law of Cause and Effect, and especially free from ‘choiceless birth’.

An important consideration regarding the aspect of Timeless Reality is that, since space and time are interdependent, it entails no distance within space. This means that those who have Awakened to the Truth of Timelessness and have left the coarse body are always present as a Mind of Pure Being. This implies that any invocation or prayer is not a calling to something or someone afar from oneself but simply the opening of a door to an already present compassionate response. Since the main quality of Awakening is an all-pervading Love and Compassion, the response to a faithful invocation or prayer is always manifested within time and space in the perceptions of those who ask for blessing to enter their heart.

No Age Ontology - Liberation is not dissolution into something greater

Some spiritual and religious teachings hold that Liberation entails the dissolution of the individual in a greater dimension like a heaven, or a greater self or a greater mind or even a greater being called God. However according to the highest Wisdom teachings this is not what actually happens even if might appear to be so. Each individual mind even if it is grasping at a self-identity and trapped within time is already an unrecognized Timeless Mind of Pure Being, beyond one or many, therefore, when grasping at separate identities dissolves completely it might appear from an hypothetical outside viewer that the mind of that being has dissolved in a greater mind, when in fact what has completely dissolved is the illusory identity of self-grasping of that individual Mind of Pure Being.

The longing for a spiritual or Wisdom teacher should be rooted in the longing for freedom, eventually and ultimately even from the physical form of the teacher himself or herself too.It is also very important not to confuse the role of a spiritual teacher with the role of a close friend, a missed parent, a psychologist or a group support leader. For these matters one should seek appropriate and professional advice. The spiritual teacher’s role is to indicate the way to complete Liberation from grasping at independent identities, which result in Liberation from the bondage of time and all the suffering related to it. Because such a true Wisdom Teacher can indicate the ‘pathless path’ to Liberation is regarded as extremely important and essential in all the highest Wisdom traditions of pure Knowledge.

In general all human beings dream every night but upon awakening from sleep most humans don’t remember their dreams nor remember whether they actually had any dreams. If one has developed some clarity and stillness of mind through any methods related to meditation, creative visualization or any other methods, then one will ‘see’ the dreams during sleep as a sort of observer and remember some or even all of them after waking up. However, at this stage, one will be completely conditioned by the content of the dream images which could be good, bad or neutral.

There are always two aspects to any Wisdom path to Liberation. One aspect is the relative aspect of calming the mind, trying to reduce one’s involvement and one’s reactions to any disturbing emotion that might arise in response to sense objects in one’s field of perception. Through this kind of training the mind becomes a detached observer of inner and outer phenomena without any judgement to whatever occurs in one’s field of experience. This is a common aspect to most spiritual and Wisdom traditions and nowadays also to many psychotherapy systems with the integration of the teachings and trainings of ‘mindfulness’ into their main methodology.

To know about a particular subject of knowledge is always within the realm of a self-grasping mind, limited by dualistic apprehension. It is a skill mediated by intelligence but it is neither mastery nor Wisdom. Nowadays the focus in society is on developing the skill of intelligence and mostly on knowing about a particular subject of knowledge in a dualistic manner. To know something directly, on the other hand, is to master a subject of knowledge and this is linked to Wisdom, it is preliminary to non-dual Timeless Wisdom Knowledge and it is not mediated by the intellect.

Intelligence is not Wisdom

Intelligence is the tool of self-grasping mind-consciousness; it can be used to bring joy and peace into one’s own life and into one’s living dimension but it can also be used to bring confusion, fear and extreme suffering to oneself and others. Wisdom, on the other hand, is the radiance and expression of the Mind of Pure Being within its own self-recognition. It acts spontaneously out of Love and Compassion and it only works for the benefit of all beings.

One very important distinction to be made is between an intellectual view of reality and an experiential view based on direct experience of Wisdom Knowledge. A conceptual, intellectual or mind elaborated view of reality, even the most refined one, will always fall short of liberating one’s Awareness from the bondage of time, space and afflictive emotions. This kind of philosophical enquiry is only useful at the beginning in order to have ‘guiding map’ along the path, or in order to discriminate between the correct path and the mistaken paths which lead to even more limitation and suffering.

Many methods of meditation, concentration, and creative visualization can help to a high degree in freeing oneself from coarse disturbing thoughts and emotions and sometimes we find that this kind of understanding and experience is equated with total realization of the state of Timelessness. However, through meditation and similar methods one can indeed achieve a state of mind which is calm, somewhat blissful and which is simply an observer of the outer and inner phenomena of the movement of thoughts and disturbing emotions without being ‘moved’, distracted or affected in any way by all these various manifestation of movement. But even though this is indeed a great achievement if compared to an ordinary state of mind completely distracted by any outer and inner phenomena, it is not yet the recognition of Timelessness or the realization of Liberation.

The mind is constantly emitting or projecting these subtle particles of ‘thought currents’ at a distance and rate of speed which is determined by the ‘subtle energy’ used in their production, there being a great difference between the thought of a vigorous thinker, and the one emanating from a weak mind. These projections of ‘thought energies’ have a tendency to mingle with the mind of other beings of a corresponding rate of vibration. Some of these thoughts remain around the places where they were emitted, while others float off and around like clouds and through the Principle of Cause and Effect and the Law of Vibration are drawn to human beings or other sentient beings thinking along similar lines. Whether they are arising from one’s own mind or the mind of other beings, there are many ways to deal with disturbing thoughts and emotions, both in a meditation session or in post meditation during daily activities. If one has a stable recognition of Timeless self-knowing Awareness one would simply let it all dissolve upon arising in the Ground of Pure Being and remain completely unaffected by any arising,

Meditation experiences which might arise during and after formal meditation sessions might alternate between pleasant and unpleasant depending on many different individual factors, causes and circumstances. The three common experiences related to body, speech and mind of an individual who has done regular sessions of meditation on a daily basis for quite some time are usually categorized as blissful bodily sensations, unimpeded clarity or direct knowledge of phenomena and a total absence of reactive and compulsory thinking, a state completely undisturbed by thoughts.

No Age Ontology - Timelessness and the stillness of mind

A distinction should be made between the Timeless Awareness of Pure Being and a mind which has been rendered completely still and aware through the practice of meditation or mindfulness. To summarize, an ordinary state of mind usually alternates between a state of stillness and the movement of thoughts and emotions, but because of this being a very rapid alternation, the state of stillness between thought-movements usually goes unrecognized altogether. In such a confused state of mind one identifies completely with the almost uninterrupted currents of thought-movement and has no awareness of the rare gaps of stillness in between, one is completely deluded by the movements of the mind. Through meditation, slowly, one becomes aware of the gap of stillness between thoughts and, in due time, one can widen this gap until a state of ‘mind at rest’ can be achieved. This state of stillness of ‘calm abiding’ must be also become aware as a detached observer of any movement that might occasionally arise without triggering any reaction of judgment toward such movement. If everything goes well, after a long training, one can achieve a stable experience of stillness of mind, aware and undisturbed by the movement of thoughts and emotions, but, because one is still a detached observer this is a dualistic experience within time and space.

In order to prepare oneself and to make one’s mind pliable, calm and present, ready to recognize one’s own Timeless Nature one can employ different methods. A simple method would be to hold the mind in a ‘one-pointed’ way upon an object of attention, which could be a material object like a flower (or a form pleasing to the eyes) or an internal non-physical object like the breath for example. The final result of all these practices is that one is able to carry this new acquired skill of peaceful undistracted attention and presence into all daytime activities and carry out any activity or task with total accuracy and without any effort, without generating resistance to what is manifesting in the present moment the power to abide undistracted in the present moment, is an indispensable quality of mind if one wants to make any spiritual or practical progress in one’s life.

The aspect of Mind’s self-recognition of Timelessness and the ability to abide in the present moment might seem similar experiences but in actuality are not the same. By abiding in the present moment with the application of mindfulness and through meditation training, without getting distracted by the various thoughts and emotions which arise in relation to appearances, one finds a state of stillness of mind, a state which is quite peaceful and at times blissful, but this state can still give rise to a subtle form of self-grasping and to dualistic appearances and phenomena. However, at this stage if one is able to release the subtle grasping and let awareness self-recognize its own non-arising and Timeless Nature, then the Timeless Mind of Pure Being is self-recognized and one has now transcended the present moment within the recognition of Timelessness.

No Age Ontology - Hermetic preliminary methods for discovering the Timeless Mind of Pure Being

There are different methods of introduction to the Wisdom of the Mind of Pure Being, but most of these methods are secret, in the sense that they need to be transmitted by a Teacher or someone that has realized concretely, at least to some important degree, the final aim of these methods. For example, in the Buddhist and Bon uninterrupted lineages of transmission, one can still receive a direct introduction to the Timeless Nature of Mind by a qualified Teacher.

However in my book I have presented three preliminary methods which come from different Hermetic sources and which have already been revealed in writing by different authors, above all by the spiritual adept and writer William Walker Atkinsons. These methods can be considered a sort ‘preliminary’ to the real experiential introduction to the Timeless Mind of Pure Being by a qualified Teacher.

Discovering the Timeless Reality of Pure Being involves transcending one’s conventional understanding of time and embracing a deeper and wider perspective on existence. This perspective involves recognizing that all moments in time exist simultaneously as potentialities in a self-perceiving ‘Timeless Now’, and that our experience of time is simply a subjective perception of a portion of this Timeless Reality. To discover the Timeless Reality of Pure Being, one must first cultivate a state of mind-consciousness that is present and somewhat free from the turmoil of thoughts and disturbing emotions to a certain degree. This can be achieved through various practices, such as meditation, mindfulness practices, creative visualisation and contemplation. By quieting the mind and remaining into the present moment, one can begin to experience a sense of peaceful and calm state of consciousness and a closer connection to the Timeless Pure Being.

No Age Ontology - The two types of birth within conditioned existence

There are two types of birth within the infinite realms of time-bound conditioned existence. The first type of birth is the common birth propelled by causes and conditions (karma) in which the consciousness grasping at a self-identity has neither choice nor freedom but is simply pushed and pulled by the forces of habitual tendencies and disturbing emotions. This type of birth is the one experienced over and over ‘ad infinitum’ by all sentient beings and it is brought to an end only at final and complete realization of the Timeless and identityless Mind of Pure Being.

The second type of birth is the spontaneous birth out of infinite, non-referential and natural Compassion of those who have Awakened to the Timeless Space of Pure Being. This type of birth is not driven or propelled by causes or conditions but it is simply the ‘Timeless and illusory’ play of Pure Being expressed by those who have Awaken to it.

Freedom from the conditioning of self-grasping based Cause and Effect, which is the main cause of dissatisfaction and suffering, can only be achieved through the stable recognition of the Timeless aspect of Mind and Reality. This is not an intellectual understanding but a total recognition of Pure Being, the recognition of the Timelessness of all phenomena which makes them ‘pure’ from the moment of their arising as ‘magical illusions’. The recognition and realization of Timelessness does not cancel the arising and ceasing of phenomena in time and space, because these phenomena are already ‘non-dual’ and integrated within Timelessness and therefore nothing needs to be rejected or modified.

The addictive tendency of self-grasping existence

The greatest of all addictions is the addiction to self-grasping existence and, based on this main addiction, arise all other infinite secondary addictions. Secondary addictions can take any form, from psychological to physical, depending on particular causes and conditions which are manifesting in one’s perception. All these secondary addictions are rooted in grasping at existence as intrinsically real and separate from its Timeless source aspect. By becoming free from the main addiction of grasping at self-identities, or at least by lessening it to any degree, all other addictions become more manageable, and eventually dissipate.

No Age Ontology - Different degrees of self-grasping at independent identities

The different degrees of self-grasping at independent identities create the variety of sentient beings which are visible or invisible to the human perception. Depending on the different main causes and conditions related to the aspect of time and the Law of Cause and effect, and according to the Law of Vibration and Gender some beings may seem to manifest as possessing a ‘strong ego’ and some a ‘weaker ego’. However, both ‘strong and weak ego’s, even though they may seem to play a different part in the play of existence, are both conditioned by the grasping at self-identities. Moreover, some beings might more tightly hold on to their illusory self-identity than others, resulting in a wide variety of complexity of forms and appearances within time and space.

According to Buddhism, existence within the bondage of self-grasping entails three levels or aspects of suffering.

The first aspect is the suffering of suffering which is the heaviest of all suffering and refers to the experience of birth, illnesses, old age and finally death.

The second is the suffering of change which is tied to the impermanent nature of all compounded phenomena.

The third and most subtle is the all-pervading suffering of existence which refers to the basic ignorance of the Timeless and identityless aspect of Reality.

Closely related to the Law of Cause and Effect is the doctrine of the Twelve Links of Dependent Origination. This is a key concept in Buddhism and it describes the cycle of suffering and the causes of birth, death and rebirth. According to this analysis, existence is characterized by a continuous process of causes and effects which are interdependently linked, where each link in the chain depends on the preceding one and leads to the next.

The Law of Cause and Effect is a fundamental Principle in many philosophical, ontological and scientific systems. It basically states that every action or event has a cause, and that this cause will produce an effect. This principle is often seen as one of the key foundations of the Universe, governing everything from the movement of celestial bodies to the behaviour of subatomic particles and the mind of sentient beings. Wisdom and Hermetic Teachings explain that everything manifested in one’s own self perception of the Universe happens according to unchanging laws, of which the Law of Cause end Effect (also called the Law of Sequence) is one of the most important, because not only it rules all planes of Reality but it is the fundamental law for the arising of different kinds of phenomena.

Hermetic Wisdom teachings speak of the Universe as governed by seven laws or principles which are naturally integrated within the Mind of Pure Being which is also the first Principle. These Seven Laws rule how we perceive Reality and are listed as:

It is always so easy to get lost within the ‘action and reaction’ way of facing experiences. However the opportunity to pause into the fully potential ‘present moment’ is always available. One will find that by simply ‘pausing within presence’ before acting, or reacting, can allow the freedom of confidence to arise within one’s state of Timeless Being and the beginning of the opportunity of ‘free will’.

No Age Ontology - Free Will and Timeless Reality

To understand how ‘free will’ works within Timeless Reality one needs to understand that the potentiality of all events that have or have not already happened and the ones that will or will not happen in the future have the same validity, status and nature if viewed within the infinite possibilities of events timelessly ‘projected’ within the Timeless Mind of Pure Being which always remain beyond all limitations. Within the framework of the Principle of Cause and Effect while one is a self-grasping sentient being living within the limitations of time one’s choices are always conditioned by past causes therefore every decision made is never really free from the antecedent causes and the habitual impulse to act in a certain way. In other words, a form of free will is only possible within the recognition of Timeless Pure Being when one is acting within a Timeless Awareness which is completely free from past or future causes and conditions. This state of complete Free Will only reaches its completeness at the time of total Awakening when all past causes and habitual tendencies will have been ‘consumed’ and dissolved by the Awareness of Timelessness.

No Age Ontology - Timeless Freedom

The Timeless Mind of Pure Being is ‘self-contained’ like a drop of mercury that doesn’t mix with the object it touches. On the other hand, the dualistic mind of self-grasping is like water which mixes and becomes completely entangled and intermingled when it touches an object like sand for example. Our innermost state of Timeless Being is timelessly free because it has never become mixed or entangled with any of its illusory appearances and therefore there is no need to free it anew but simply to recognize its basic and spontaneous Timeless Freedom. However, if one identifies with appearances and circumstances within conditioned existence then one is never really free because of the numberless limitations entailed by possessing a body-mind aggregate which needs constant caring, food, water, shelter, clothing and companionship.

No Age Ontology - Time and Timelessness are a Non-Duality

According to the Wisdom traditions of Knowledge, Reality of Pure Being is a non-duality, a state of total liberty, whole, complete, and perfect as it is in itself, without a cause, infinite and Timeless, indivisible and immutable, immanent and transcendent without contradiction. The only problem is that living beings do not recognize the essential Timeless aspect of Reality and therefore are completely ensnared by the appearing aspect which is related to experience in time and space. Fortunately the appearing aspect is an illusory aspect and has its root in the Timelessness of Pure Being which is never corrupted and, because of this, no matter how far and how long one has been ‘roaming’ hopelessly within time and space, one has never really been separated from one’s own Timeless Essence.

The source of all perceived phenomena of the container, the Universe, and what is contained, sentient beings, is a Timeless Mind of Pure Being, unchanging and simply present to itself, but its manifestation as illusory phenomena is eternal, without end. This endless manifestation follows the Principle of Rhythm and Ciclicity manifesting and dissolving infinitely in an illusory eternal continuum of past, present and future which is rooted within Timelessness. Awakening to Timelessness means to discover the illusion of eternal and illusory time and therefore freeing oneself from its conditioning aspect.

In the human dimension time is perceived and experienced in different ways. There is the biological passing of time which is part of the natural environment and the bodies of living beings. This is a natural process which brings decay and death but science has and will find ways to slow it down to a great degree, so it is not an absolute principle. There is the psychological time which is very much relative to the quality of the particular circumstances appearing in one’s field of perception. For example good and bad experiences seem to last shorter or longer depending on many different psychological factors. Then there is what seems to be an absolute principle of time measured by a clock or a machine, but actually even this is a very relative phenomenon, according to science, dependent on factors like gravity, speed and mass.

Time is a concept that has puzzled humans for centuries. We have always been fascinated by its nature and have strived to understand it better. In our attempts to comprehend time, we have developed various theories and frameworks that attempt to explain its functioning. However, as we delve deeper into the nature of time, as we have seen in the previous chapter, we come to realize that the linear conception of time is merely an illusion. From our perspective, time appears to move in a straight line, with the past behind us, the present before us, and the future ahead of us. We experience time as a sequence of moments that flow from one to the next in a steady, unchanging pace. However, this perception of time is a product of our limited human consciousness. In reality, time is far more complex than our minds can fathom.

No Age Ontology - Only the direct knowledge of Timeless Pure Being will distinguish humans from AI

It is quite possible that in the future Artificial Intelligence will completely replace humans in many fields of knowledge. It might even be possible that humans will be able to program or somehow indirectly trigger some sort of ‘self-consciousness’ into the AI. There is an even more esoteric possibility that the self-grasping consciousness of living beings after death will take rebirth inside AI machinery. However, even if the AI will become ‘self-conscious’ and endowed with an almost infinite number of intelligent qualities it will always be tied to the knowledge of a consciousness which is self-grasping at an independent identity and will never be able to become aware of Timeless Awareness because for a self-grasping consciousness a timeless event is a non-existing event and therefore an unknowable event.

The expressive potentiality of the Timeless Mind of Pure Being is natural and all-pervading Compassion. This is a natural expression not created by causes and conditions. The suffering of cyclic existence within time is therefore an interdependent factor to this natural potentiality in order for it to express itself by ‘reaching out’ within time and space to the endless suffering of infinite sentient beings which are none other than itself. Without the possibility of Timeless Mind’s confusion into grasping at self-identities within time, there would no purpose to its Timeless natural Compassion to express itself in leading sentient beings to their own self recognition of Timelessness.

If the mind has something objective, that could be ‘its own’, then it would be a really objective thing. But since the mind is not an objective thing, who can claim ‘ownership’ of it?

Each individual experience and perception of the Universe always unfolds within an ‘individualized’ but without any intrinsic identity Mind of Pure Being, which is not an event categorized within the dualistic concepts of one and many. Moreover, each individual state of Awareness of the Mind of Pure Being integrates and includes all infinite states of Awareness of the Mind of Pure Being and all infinite phenomena, both animate and inanimate. This is not to advocate solipsism in which one’s mind, thoughts and emotions are the only real entities which can exist or be known, negating any possibility of communications. In a nutshell each individual perception includes all other infinite individual perceptions, just like space includes all space and yet it can be individually known.

No Age Ontology - Individuality within identityless oneness

The aspect of Timeless Oneness must be recognized and realized by each ‘individual consciousness’. The individual consciousness which is the radiant clarity of Timeless Being, must recognize its own Timeless Source and this is always an individual direct recognition and realization, never a group experience or a mass experience. What is overcome within total Awakening is not individuality but self-grasping at independent identities. Individuality in this case is not regarded as a separate entity but simply the ‘individualized’ self-clarity of the Timeless Ground of Pure Being which is similar to infinite space. When the Mind of Pure Being realizes its own non-arising aspect of Timeless and identityless nature, then its own manifestation is always harmonious and beneficial. However, when the radiant clarity of the Timeless Mind of Pure Being gets confused in believing in subjective and objective identities its manifestation brings suffering and strife.

No Age Ontology - The illusion of self-identity and thoughts

The ongoing experience of self-identity usually seems quite real and ‘solid’ for most sentient beings however, upon thorough investigation using different methods of meditative enquiry it becomes quite obvious that it is only an illusion created by the combination of the quality of clarity of the mind and the subtle energy that drives the movement of thoughts. Thought movement can be quite coarse and accompanied by emotional energy, but it can also be extremely subtle and almost ‘still in itself’ during, for example, the meditation on ‘stillness’ or any other meditative experience. In both cases the mind automatically seems to grasp at an identity almost desperately in order to survive even though this is not needed at all. As a matter of fact, one can function normally and with exceptional clarity without grasping at self-identities. In such a case, one would feel completely carefree and joyful but never careless regarding the general suffering of sentient beings.

Creation is Timeless but the individual experience of a ‘portion of creation’ can manifests within time and space. Just like the objects reflected on a mirror’s surface are contained evenly on its surface, all of Mind’s manifestations are in their true nature completely beyond the measure of time and space but nevertheless appear in the Timeless Expanse of the Pure Now of Mind as illusory events within time and distance. Awakened experience of Reality is beyond time and space but has free and spontaneous access to what is manifested in time and space, transcendent and immanent at the same time. All relative possible experiences of infinite past, present and future events can be known in Awakened experience as a potentiality of infinite possibilities of events ‘already happened or not yet happened’.

Just like a mirror needs a reflection appearing on its surface in order to fulfill its function, the Mind of Pure Being manifests an infinite variety of self-appearances, which, if unrecognized as self-appearances, grow into confusion and suffering, in order to fulfill its capacity of unobstructed potentiality which is naturally inherent in its nature. These appearances, in their turn, might or might not recognize their nature as reflections lacking any independent existence and therefore avariety of perceptions, pure or impure, ensue naturally. Once confusion into duality has been ‘self-triggered’ a spiritual Wisdom path is needed to unveil the timelessly inherent Wisdom and dissolve confusion.

No Age Ontology - Awakened Deities, gods and Timeless Pure Being

A very important distinction should be made between the categories of Awakened Deities, gods and the Timeless Mind of Pure Being. Awakened Deities which can appear within time and space in the perception of sentient beings predisposed to such a visionary communication, are simply the spontaneous manifestation in perceivable form of the Timeless Ground of Pure Being. Such Deities, like holograms, do not have any self-grasping to an independent identity. Their ‘actionless actions’ are manifested only for the benefit of sentient beings trapped within conditioned existence. The various gods or demi-gods that can found within popular cultures and various religions, on the other hand, are not yet Awakened to Timelessness and are still bound by various degrees of grasping at an independent identity. Moreover, these gods, due to self-grasping are still under the cage of birth, and consequently death, even though their lifespan is almost without measure in human years. The Mind of Pure Being is the source of all phenomena and perceived Reality, it is the potentiality of all events, meanings and circumstances and it is beyond all dualistic apprehensions of subjects and objects, time and distance. Timeless Mind is at the same time immanent and transcendent of phenomena, it is an all pervading lucid and mirror-like Awareness contained in and containing all the phenomena of the Universe and beings, it is therefore an immutable, unchanging and non-modifiable state beyond the passing of time and transitions, it is the source of, it pervades, and it is the real nature of all living beings. Consciousness is the base for grasping at an independent identity in time and space; it is the base and the ‘machinery’ of self-grasping and ego-functioning. Consciousness is synonym with self-grasping mind, whether conscious, unconscious or subconscious, it operates in dualistic terms in its active phase as the conscious mind, and it is the ‘storehouse’ of all past experiences in its latent phase as the subconscious mind.

No Age Ontology - The ‘Mind Only’ doctrine in the Mahayana Buddhist tradition

In another school of the Mahayana Buddhist tradition we find a particular doctrine called ‘Mind Only’ (Chittamatra) or ‘The Doctrine of Consciousness’ (Vijnanavada). The ‘Mind Only’ tenet system asserts that there are no such things as external phenomena. According to the Buddhist ‘Doctrine of Consciousness’, which is founded upon the Buddha’s statement: “All three worlds are Mind only" and it is expressed mainly in Buddhist scriptures like the ‘Lankavatara’ and ‘Dasabhumika’ Sutra, mind as a ‘non-dual and self-aware consciousness’, is an Absolute Reality. According to the ‘Mind Only’ philosophical school of thought, when we see a table, the visual form of the table that we see does not exist separately from the visual consciousness to which it appears. When several people see a table at the same time, each person is experiencing the ripening of tendencies (karmic seeds) of collective karma on his or her own mental continuum. It is not that each person is seeing a common table, nevertheless, the table is findable, and everyone can point to the same table, in terms of what each person is experiencing.

No Age Ontology - Emptiness in the Mahayana Buddhist tradition

In one of the two main doctrines of the Buddhist Mahayana tradition, the Madhyamaka school, we often find the term ‘Emptiness’ or ‘Sunyata’ to refer to the state of the Absolute Truth of Reality, as opposed to a conventional truth of what appear to exist to the senses and the mind ‘s consciousness. Although ‘Emptiness’ is a state beyond concepts and the ultimate Truth of Reality, this by no means signifies that this state is a nihilist view of Reality which denies the appearance side of what sentient beings perceive. In fact, in one of the most important text of the Mahayana tradition we find the famous sentence which states that not only “form is no other than Emptiness, but also Emptiness is no other than form”.

No Age Ontology - The Unconditioned State of Nibbana in Buddhism

In the fundamental Buddhist teachings taught by the Buddha, the state of ‘Nibbana’ (or Nirvana in Sanskrit) is described as an unconditioned state which means not produced by causes and conditions. The path comprising different meditation practices leading to Awakening to Nibbana doesn't cause ‘Nibbana’ but simply leads one to the discovery or Awakening of such a state, just like a road to a mountain doesn't cause the mountain to come into being, but simply leads you to it.

No Age Ontology - The Advaita Vedanta Wisdom tradition of Non-Duality

Advaita Vedanta is a prominent ontological school within Hinduism which emphasize the non-dual nature of Reality and the ultimate unity of the individual with Reality which it calls ‘Brahman’. In the Advaita tradition the term ‘Moksha’ or Liberation from suffering and rebirth is attained through recognizing the illusoriness of the phenomenal world, the body-mind complex and the notion of ‘identity’, and acquiring ‘Vidyā’ the knowledge of one’s true nature as ‘Atman-Brahman’ or ‘Self-Pure Reality’. Advaita Vedānta states that all Reality and every sentient being’s experience have their root in Brahman, which is unchanging. The Reality of ‘Brahman’, which is not to be confused with the Hindu god ‘Bhrama’, cannot be known as an object of mind because Brahman is one’s very Mind, moreover the goal of Advaita Vedanta is to realize that one's self-identity (atman) is a product of ego false-identification when in reality, Brahman is all that exists, which leads to the conclusion that we are all ultimately Brahman.

The No Age Ontology - The Timeless ‘I am that I am’ in the Judeo-Christian tradition

In the book of Exodus God’s name is revealed to Moses as ‘I am that I am’ which can also be rendered as ‘the One who is’. Since it is always in a state of Timeless Being beyond all dualities of birth and death many spiritual teachings use the term ‘I am’, and because it is without identity no real name is given other than ‘that I am’. The ‘I am that I am’ can be considered an abstraction of the Mind of Pure Being or Reality itself, it is the Pure Awareness of Reality prior to thoughts, free from perceptions, associations and memories.

The meaning of the metaphysical Hermetic aphorism ‘All is Mind and Mind is All’ is that the Universe is Timeless Mind, the Universe is the effulgence of Pure Being as a self-perception. If All is a manifestation of one’s nature of Pure Being, all forms, energy, motion and power are manifestations of vital‑mental action and consequently there is no force but vital‑mental force, no energy but vital‑mental energy, no motion but vital‑mental motion and no power but vital‑mental power. This explanation is directly opposed to the materialistic and nihilist theories which make matter the dominant factor in life in the Universe.

Timeless Reality refers to the ontological discovery that time is an illusion and that all moments in time exist simultaneously as a potentiality in Timeless Mind’s self-perception which, although not within the limitations of singular and plural, nor of self-identity, is nevertheless infinitely individualized. This perspective challenges the traditional concepts of time as a true linear, forward-moving progression of moments and suggests that the past, present, and future all exist simultaneously in an ever-present singularity of infinite individual perceptions. All movements in time are simply an illusory perception projected in the ever present ‘Nowness of Timeless Being’.

A general definition of meditation would be ‘to bring to a center’. Meditation or concentration is the undisturbed power of subjective attention over an object of consciousness; therefore meditation is the domain and the best of mind’s tools.

There are many possible methods to develop meditation and presence of mind, and they all achieve the same purpose.

A simple method would be to hold the mind in a ‘one-pointed’ way upon an object of attention, which could be a material object like a flower (or anything pleasing to the eyes) or an internal non physical object like the breath for example.

The Principle of Polarity or Law of Opposites states that the play of Reality manifests always two sides, or two poles and the difference between these two seemingly diametrically opposed poles is merely a matter of degree. According to the Law of Opposites, everything attains completion by manifesting itself in the opposite direction to that from which it started. For example the spiritual and the physical planes are in reality the different poles of the same thing: the play of the Expanse of Pure Being.

“Mind (as well as metals and elements) may be transmuted from state to state; degree to degree; condition to condition; pole to pole; vibration to vibration.”

The Kybalion

The Principle of Vibration or Sound tells us that everything, from the totality of Mind, which is Pure Being, to the heart of each sentient being and down to the grossest form of matter, all is in motion and everything vibrates. The higher the vibration, the higher the position in the scale or the closer it is to the primal cause of Pure Being. Here we introduce a paradox; in fact we said in the first chapter that the center of Mind is a place of rest on the surface of which there are waves, currents and whirlpools and centers of energy. But as the Law of Polarity tells us, opposites are identical in nature, but different in degree, extremes meet, all truths are half-truths, and all paradoxes are reconciled.

This is the first introductory podcast on the seven Hermetic Principles of Reality and Being as described in the Hermetic text “The Kybalion” and in my commentary book "The Seven Laws of Reality and Being". These seven Principles which govern Reality are: the Principle of Mind, the Principle of Cause and Effect, the Principle of Vibration, the Principle of Correspondence, the Principle of Polarity (or Opposites), the Principle of Rhythm (or Cyclicity) and the Principle of Gender.
