I've travelled the world with my work and one of the most destructive diseases I've seen is depression. Loneliness and isolation can creep like poisons through the system. While they were both present six years ago when this broadcast aired in 2014, they have never been more potent than today.

We've been talking a lot about perception this week. This 2008 archived broadcast is a reminder that our perception of what is possible can so easily be influenced by the doubts or criticisms of others…. if we let it be so. But what if we fight back, believe in the possibilities, and make reality out of what they call impossible?

——> In 1876 Alexander Graham Bell presented his new invention to president Rutherford Hayes; the president determined that no one would ever want to use it. The invention was the telephone.

——> In 1944, a young woman was told by the top modeling director that she better learn to become a secretary or hurry up and go get married. This woman became known as Marilyn Monroe.

——> In 1954, the manager of the Grand Ole Opry fired a singer that challenged him and told him, "you ain't going nowhere, son. Go back to truck driving". This singer was Elvis Presley.

——> In 1962 in England, a group of nervous musicians were harshly rejected by executives who told them they were a waste of time. This group of musicians became known as the Beatles.

What would've happened if all of these people listened to the voices of doubt and discouragement? How often do you listen to those voices, or give up after the first challenge, denying the world your greatest gifts?
