The Apostle Paul stated, “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free!” That freedom is found in the unconditional love of God provided through his son, Jesus, who fulfilled the Law.

Paul’s treatise to the churches in the region of Galatia was meant to clear up false teaching that had infiltrated their beliefs. This love of God, through Jesus, provided immense freedom from the Law, actually more like an emancipation from it. But living under God’s love through Jesus instead of the Law of Moses was not intended to be a license to sin, but to produce fruit. Paul lists the fruit of the Spirit.

You’ve arrived at one of my favorite sections of scripture. As the Apostle Paul systematically chopped away at the lies being spread by those who believed Christians should follow the Law of Moses, he explained the purpose of the Law and described its necessary role as a guardian. But he did not stop there. He continued, stating the Law was like slavery. In am a manner of speaking, the Law imprisoned people. Jesus was the fulfilment of the Law and brought about a whole new covenant with people. If you’ve embraced a works-based theology, you’ll either really struggle with this message or you’ll be set free!

21. Let's Talk about the Spirit - Galatians (part 3)

The false teachers in Galatia warped the simple message of salvation through Jesus and caused confusion. They insisted that new believers should follow the Law of Moses. While building his case against this, Paul explained that believers received the Holy Spirit by believing what they initially heard about salvation, not by works of the Law. Oh my, how we still complicate things by believing there is something we can do for ourselves in the spiritual realm! We can’t! Jesus did it for us!

The Ark of the Covenant was dwelling place of God in the Old Testament. The Israelites transported the Ark wherever they went. Imagine a structure with angel-like statues on top of it, with special things inside of it, and with rings on the side where poles could be inserted to carry it. The enemy of the Israelites saw the Ark as a secret weapon of sorts. They thought if they took it, they would gain strength and have the advantage over the Israelites. Wrong!

When unusal things happen in the Bible, we might react in different ways. For me, this is a funny story – yet serious at the same time. I hope you enjoy listening.

However, quite often they did not obey God, so their entry into the Promised Land was delay for guess how long? Forty-years! During their wandering they learned many lessons and grew into a nation. Moses died and Joshua their new leader who would usher them into the Promised Land. There was only one problem: The city of Jericho stood in the way.

When times were good, the people forgot God! After Nehemiah finished his work in Jerusalem as both supervisor over the rebuilding of the wall and navigating the population through spiritual renewal, he returned home and resumed his previous job. After some time had passed he went to Jerusalem for a visit. He was put out with how the people had strayed and held them accountable.

12. We Will Not Neglect the Work God Started - Nehemiah (part 9)

A few years ago I took my family to Bimini, Bahamas during the winter holidays. We left our cold Tennessee weather behind and flew into sunshine and warmth. While I enjoyed each day of our trip, there was one that had extra meaning for me. A Bahamian friend named Michael joined us for supper in our beach house. As the day came to a close, one of my sons got out his Backpacker guitar and together we sang the old classic, “Lord I Lift Your Name On High”. It was such a meaningful time that I did not want it to end. I am sure you’ve had times like that, too.

After the wall had been rebuilt and dedicated, after the people had repented and were unified for the first time in many years, they did not want the spiritual renewal to end. They publicly pledged to be ALL IN, IN ALL WAYS. (That’s actually a better title for this message but I didn’t think of it until just now!) The rebuilding of the wall was more than just a construction project, it had spiritual significance as well. People were closer to God than they had ever been and they wanted the spiritual renewal to continue.

11. Identity: Who is God? Who are we? - Nehemiah (part 8)

The first part of Nehemiah’s story focused on the rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem. The second part focused on rebuilding a people dedicated to the Lord. 10. A Pattern For Meeting With God - Nehemiah (part 7)

How do we meet with God? Do we approach him in the way my kids approach me sometimes: “Yo Pops, what’s up?” That’s probably not a good idea. Approaching God, I believe, requires some advance preparation. Yes, we can approach his throne of grace at any time because of what Jesus did for us on the cross, but reverence is essential. Listen and learn a model for meeting with God that comes from the story of a man named Nehemiah. In the story, we learn the importance of paying attention to God’s Word, worshipping the Lord, understanding what God says, repenting of sins, and then experiencing joy.

Nehemiah dealt with distractions, dangerous lies, and deception. Distractions are around every corner. If you’re anything like me, staying on task is hard. In fact, getting this podcast going has been a challenge because it takes focus and because I deal with constantly! How about lies and deception? They are everywhere, aren’t they? Nehemiah was super wise and had solid insight on how to deal with these things in order to help the people stay on task.

Nehemiah and his massive team were moving right along with the rebuilding of the wall when they encountered the enemy. However, the enemy was not an army, no, not at all. The enemy consisted of several individuals who wanted the construction to stop immediately. The first line of attack was ridicule. Later the enemies of fatigue and fear set in. Wisely, Nehemiah met these enemies with confidence and the work continued. We, too, need to be on guard for the enemies of various disguises.

After seeing numerous people fall away from the faith, many times I have wondered why. Right before this series was created, a particular friend of mine became disillusioned after something terrible happened that was well beyond his control. I have never experienced what he experienced so I cannot say I would not have the same provoking questions he has. He is the main inspiration that launched these three messages. I have a heavy heart as I think about him, and I hope he will find his way back to Jesus.
Some of my theologically-minded friends will wince at the very title of this series and will want to debate the doctrinal soundness of both the title and the content. This series is not for them. In fact, probably none of these podcasts will be for them. But I trust the messages will land in the right place, with those who believe, or have believed, but struggle.
