A surprisingly good week for company updates, plus some major markets moving to new highs, thanks to the Fed changing stance on interest rate expectations for 2024, with 3 cuts now expected. Quite a few bombshell profit warnings again this week.

Terrible market conditions continue, with obvious signs of distressed sellers (instis with redemptions, and capitulating PIs probably).

Some lovely bargains presented on a plate to us too.

Not just small caps either, as Mid-caps are now down 10% YTD, and down 30% from the 2021 high.

Yet the market is now cheap, and we're getting that confirmed almost daily, with takeover bids, often from the US, private equity or trade buyers.

Plenty of bargains, but also plenty of banana skins with some profit warnings this week - telecoms suppliers and building materials seem trouble hotspots. B2B generally is looking an increasing area of concern, but that's why share prices are so low.

Will we get political pressure to force central banks back into QE & low rates?

PER can be a flawed concept in a downturn.

Top-down thoughts - finding sectors with tailwinds, avoiding ones with headwinds?

Rising profits from interest on cash piles - but what about the deterioration in the real value of the cash pile?

Switching from dead positions into more buoyant ones?

AIM mostly rubbish, but a smaller number of lovely companies in there - needles in haystack!

As usual, Paul doesn’t pull any punches with criticism of poor results, especially from eCommerce giants Asos and THG – both look like possible zeroes, if they’re not able to pull off their turnaround plans.

Profit warnings from building products suppliers MSLH and ECEL come into focus – is the sector now cheap enough to bottom-fish for a recovery in 2024 and beyond? Maybe, who knows!?

Plus dozens of other companies that Paul & Graham reviewed.

Paul also explains our traffic light system – which we assumed would be obvious, but for anyone confused;

Green means a company looks securely financed (so low risk of dilution/insolvency), is trading OK, and looks reasonably priced.

Amber means no strong view either way, and

Red means there are significant problems, especially over financing, dilution risk, see more detail in our reports which will spell out the risks.

Can we predict what future share prices will do? No, because the market is driven by investor sentiment, and sometimes higher risk shares can produce strikingly good share price movements. All we’re saying with our traffic light system is – this is our initial view, and over to you for the detailed research of your own. Hopefully we save people time by flagging good and bad points about each share, that’s the idea!

A big boost to my personal portfolio occurred on Friday, with a 200% premium takeover bid for Seraphine (BUMP). It was high risk: high reward, so I’m very relieved an excellent outcome has happened. Maybe more luck than judgement!
