Philip Emeagwali 23rd August 1954 is often ranked in the top 20 greatest minds that ever lived. That list includes Charles Darwin, Isaac Newton, William Shakespeare, Leonardo da Vinci, Aristotle, and Confucius. At age forteen in July 1969, he was conscripted into the Biafran Army and sent to the Oguta War theater to replace one of the 500 Biafran soldiers who were killed a month earlier. In the list of the worst genocidal crimes of the 20th century committed against humanity, the death of one in fifteen Biafrans was ranked fifth.Due to the Nigerian Civil War, Philip Emeagwali dropped out of school for five years but developed a reputation in Onitsha (Nigeria) as a gifted teenager. He caught the attention of American scholars and was awarded a scholarship on September 10, 1973, to the United States where he researched for two decades and contributed to mathematics, physics, and computer science. Philip Emeagwali is in the top ten rankings of geniuses, inventors, Nigerians, and was voted the 35th greatest African of all time.In 1989, Philip Emeagwali rose to fame when he won a recognition described as the Nobel Prize of Supercomputing and made the news headlines for his invention of first world’s fastest computing across an Internet that’s a global network of processors. That vital technology underpins every supercomputer and changed the way we look at the computer. Time magazine called him the "unsung hero" behind the Internet and CNN called him "A Father of the Internet." House Beautiful magazine ranked his invention among nine important everyday things taken for granted. In a White House speech of August 26, 2000, then U.S. President Bill Clinton described Philip Emeagwali as “one of the great minds of the Information Age.” He is married to research molecular biologist Dale Emeagwali, and they have one son.

It was the story of my journey to the frontier of extreme-scale computational physics. That journey to discover how to solve the toughest problems in mathematical physics was interrupted during the last thirty months of the 1960s. That journey was interrupted when I fled from my all-boys Catholic boarding school—named Saint George’s Grammar School, Obinomba (Nigeria). I fled from Saint George’s Grammar School in late April 1967 and I fled because the Nigerian Civil War was in the air.I fled to become a 12-year-old refugeein the break-away and short-lived nation of Biafra.Two months after I fled from Obinomba (Nigeria) to Agbor (Nigeria) to Onitsha (Biafra), and on the Sixth of July of 1967that Nigeria-Biafra War began.On the Fourth of October of 1967, my ancestral hometown of Onitsha (Biafra)was heavily bombarded for 24 hoursand bombarded from Asaba (Nigeria)and bombarded from across the River Niger.The following day,that artillery bombardmentof Onitsha (Biafra)by the Nigerian armywas followed by the invasion of my hometown.That night, Onitshawas invaded by a 10-boat armada that carried five thousand [5,000] Nigerian soldiers.Those Nigerian soldierswere led by Murtala Mohammed, who would later become the president of Nigeria.One in fifteen Biafrans diedwhen that Nigerian Civil War ended.The Nigerian Civil Warwas a nightmare and a bloodbath.The Nigerian Civil War endedafter thirty months of non-stop fighting and on January 15, 1970.One million soldiersdied at the war frontsof the Nigerian Civil War.And about half a million women and children died in Biafran refugee camps.I survived two years in Biafran refugee campsand survived six months of bloodbathnear the Oguta War Front.I survived a war that was described as Africa’s bloodiest war.14.1.2 One Day We Had to Run!Biafra was located in the southeastern region of Nigeria, West Africa.My family of seven childrenlived in six refugee campswithin Biafra.For two years and three months, onward of April 1967, my family lived in refugee campsin the Biafran cities of Onitsha, Ogidi, Oba, Awka, Awka-Etiti,and Ndoni.During the months of January, February, and March of 1968,Russian Ilyushin bombers and Mig fighterswere bombing and strafing our neighborhoods of around 14 Mba Road, Onitsha.On my 14th birthdate of August 23, 1968,my postal address was:Chukwurah Philip EmeagwaliSaint Joseph’s Refugee Camp,Awka-Etiti, Biafra, West Africa.On the cover of the TIME magazinethat was dated August 23, 1968is an artist’s portrait of “Colonel Ojukwu,”the leader of Biafra.The cover story of that issue of TIME magazinewas titled “Biafra’s Agony.”Philip Emeagwali Lecture 180125-2

I’m Philip Emeagwali. I invented a new supercomputer that could be used to solve the toughest problems arising in mathematics and physics. Such problems are called the Grand Challenge Problems of supercomputing. Back in 1989 the year I completed my invention and began appearing in major U.S. newspapers, Seymour Cray —who was the then leading mind in the world of vector processing supercomputers—could not understand the mathematics of where each of my 64 binary thousand initial-boundary value problems should be and when it should be at each of my as many processors. Back in 1989, the supercomputer scientists that attempted to parallel process across an ensemble of processors were processing by the seat of their pants. That is, those supercomputer scientists of the 1970s and ‘80sdid not understand the complicated mathematics and did not have the command of scientific materials and the subject matter knowledgethat was needed to solve the Grand Challenge Problem. The Grand Challenge Problem was at the crossroadwhere calculus, algebra, physics, computing, and supercomputingmet each other. Because they did not understand the Grand Challenge Problem, the 25,000 vector processing supercomputer scientists of the 1980s and earlierbegan to hate the massively parallel processing supercomputerthat I used to solve the Grand Challenge Problem.Back in the 1980s, I was the only internet scientist that knew the 64 binary thousand, or the 65,536, “address tags” that directed where on my interneteach of my 65,536 initial-boundary value problems of calculus and physicswas delivered.To the 25,000 vector processing supercomputer scientists of the 1980s, reading my 65,536 email message-passing codeswas as incomprehensible as reading a Chinese newspaper.My invention of how to provide the address tagswas the necessary pre-conditionto the invention of the massively parallel processing supercomputerthat is also a new internet de facto.That inventionhas rich and fertile consequencesand contributed to the more complete understandingof how and why the technology called parallel processing—or solving millions upon millions of problems—across as many processorsand solving them at the same timemakes the computer fasterand makes the supercomputer super.19.1.2 Birth of a New ComputerMy quest for the precursor to the modern supercomputerthat is fastest by parallel processing acrossa new internetthat is a new global network of processors began as a vague idea.That quest began as the seed of an Iroko treeand blossomed, sixteen years later,into the world’s fastest supercomputerthat is the Iroko treeof the unknown forest named the massively parallel processing supercomputer.The Iroko tree is the tallest tree in Igbo Landof southeastern Nigeria.The Iroko treegrows along the west coast of Africa.The Iroko treecan live for up to 500 years.My quest for the parallel processing supercomputer began in the early morning of Thursday June 20, 1974in Corvallis, Oregon, United States.My quest for the modern supercomputerended at 8:15 in the morning of Tuesday the Fourth of July 1989in Los Alamos, New Mexico, United States.That quest for the parallel processingsupercomputerled to my deeper and surer understanding of the Internet as a planetary supercomputer-hopeful.I had ideas about parallel processing since 1974. For the fifteen years, onward of June 20, 1974, I conducted my supercomputer research alone.I did so alone because I was ridiculed, mocked, and rejected by all-white research teams that were exclusively programming only sequential and vector processing supercomputers. As a black African-born supercomputer scientist in the United States, I felt like I was in exile wherever I am. I’m in exile in the United States. I was in exile in Africa.I was in exile in the then uncharted territory of the massively parallel processing supercomputer.A multidisciplinary supercomputer research team could comprise of one thousand scientists and engineers.Each member of that supercomputer research team was at the frontier of knowledge of physics.Or at the frontier of knowledge of mathematics.Or at the frontier of knowledge of computer science.To discover parallel processing required both theory and experimentsand required a polymath,rather than a mathematician.To invent the massively parallel processing supercomputer required a polymaththat was simultaneously at homeat the frontiers of physics, mathematics, and computer science.It took me sixteen years of advanced training, onward of March 25, 1974,in Oregon (United States)as well as weekly attendances at 500 research seminarsof the 1980s in the District of Columbia and Maryland (United States), to become that triple threat and that polymaththat is at home at the frontiers of knowledgein physics, mathematics, and computer science. Most importantly, I was the only research scientist that gave massively parallel processing research lectures to audiences of research computational physicists at the United States national laboratories. I gave research lecturesto research mathematicians at the international congress of mathematicians.I gave research lecturesto research computer scientistsof the two premier computer societiesin the world, namely, The Computer Society of the IEEEand the Association for Computing Machinery.In the late 1970s and early ‘80s,I was rejected because white research scientists dismissed me before they heard me give my research lectureson how I invented the massively parallel processingsupercomputer.The audio and video recordings of my lectures on the new supercomputerthat I inventedare posted at emeagwali dot com.To work cohesively as a supercomputer research team demands that each team member follow the team leader. The supercomputer research teamsof the 1970s and ‘80swere coerced to group think and were technologically brainwashed to group think only in the direction of conventional vector processing supercomputing. The leading proponents of vector processing supercomputerswere the leading opponents of parallel processing supercomputers.18.1.4 Sometimes, The Impossible is PossibleIn 1989, there were 25,000 users of vector processing supercomputers.I was the only fulltime programmerof the handful of massively parallel processing supercomputersof the 1980s.Gene Amdahl and Seymour Cray,the two leading opponents of the parallel processing supercomputer,argued that it will forever remain impossible to parallel process through as many as eight processors or computer cores. In the 1940s through ‘60s, the group thinkers in the field of supercomputingfocused only on thesequential processing supercomputertechnology.In the 1970s and ‘80s, the group thinkers in supercomputing focused only on thevector processing supercomputer technology. In those two decades,I was forced to work as a lone wolfsupercomputer scientistthat was not a member of a 400-person research team.

A Day in the Life of a Child Soldier. I was a child soldier on the Biafran side of the Nigeria Biafra War, a war that raged during the last 30 months of the 1960s, a war that was described as Africa’s bloodiest war, and a war in which one in fifteen Biafrans died. My journey to my invention was a twenty-year long journey that began at a war front in July 1969 and ended, twenty years later, at the frontier of knowledge on the Fourth of July 1989. The turning point in my journey to the frontier of the most massively parallel supercomputer occurred twenty years before my experimental discovery of the massively parallel supercomputer that, in turn, occurred on the Fourth of July 1989 and occurred in Los Alamos, New Mexico, United States. In July 1969, I was conscripted as a 14-year-old soldier and sent to the Oguta War Front, Igbo Land, Biafra, West Africa. I was conscripted at gun point into a war that was on par with the American Civil War or the Spanish Civil War.I was the youngest soldier at the Oguta War Front, Biafra. That war turned my ancestral hometown of Onitsha (Biafra) into Africa’s bloodiest battlefield. I arrived at the Oguta War Front and arrived a few days after 500 Biafran soldiers fell on the ground. Five hundred soldiers fell as if they were dry leaves. I was conscripted to replace one of the 500 men that died. At the Oguta War Front of Biafra, they were more guns than pens. That 30-month-long war ended on July 15, 1970 and ended with the defeat of Biafra.In mid-1968, my postal address was the refugee camp atSaint Joseph’s Secondary School, Awka-Etiti, Biafra. My family of nine lived in a tiny classroomof Saint Joseph’s Secondary School.In Biafra, West Africa, all schools were closed from June 1967through early 1970.Schools in Biafra were closed because they were either located at the war frontor closed so that refugees like those of us that fled from Asaba and Onitshacould live in its classrooms.In Biafra, all school classroomswere reconfigured as living spacesfor refugees and soldiers. The refugees at Saint Joseph’s had no chairs, no tables, no beds. Refugees slept on a mat that was spread across a concrete floorand many slept on bare floors.My father, Nnaemeka James Emeagwali,who was appointed our refugee camp nurse, said thatmost refugee children, including my youngest brother, had kwashiorkor.Kwashiorkor is a nutritional disorder that is caused by the lack of protein.Kwashiorkor was prevalent in famine stricken Biafra. At Saint Joseph’s Refugee Camp,there were days I only ate palm kernels and fried cassava flakes called garri.By mid-1970, and six months after the war has ended,I was still living in refugee quarters along Port Harcourt Road, Fegge, Onitsha, East Central State (Nigeria).Each morning, I took an empty bucketto fetch water from the eastern bank of the River Niger.Port Harcourt Road was a short walk from the banks of the River Niger.Fast forward four years from that refugee quarters in Fegge (Onitsha),I was in Monmouth, Oregon, in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States.2.7.5 Philip Emeagwali ReligionI was asked:“What were the religious influenceson your contributions to science?”

For complete transcript and lecture series, visit http://emeagwali.com.For live speaking engagements or tour schedules, call 202-203-8724 or email info@emeagwali.com or http://emeagwali.com.LECTURE TRANSCRIPT:Philip Emeagwali Lecture 180122-34.2.1 How I Invented a New InternetOn the Fourth of July of 1989,the US Independence Day,I—Philip Emeagwali—experimentally discovered how to build a new supercomputerthat is a new internetthat encircled a globeand encircled it in the manner our planetary-sized internet encircles the Earth.I experimentally discovered how to build that new internet and do so from an ensemble of commodity-off-the-shelf processorsthat were identical to each otherand that were equal distances afar and apart from each other.That new knowledge was knowing my new internetas a global network of 1,048,576 email wiresthat I visualized as tightly circumscribingthe hypersurface of a hyperglobe in a sixteen-dimensional hyperspace.My experimental discoveryof massively parallel processingthat occurred around that new internetand that occurred on the Fourth of July of 1989made the news headlinesand was reported in the June 20, 1990 issueof The Wall Street Journal.Eleven years later,that experimental discoveryof a new internetthat is also a new supercomputer was reconfirmedby then President Bill Clintonand reconfirmed in his presidential lecture of August 26, 2000.That presidential lecture was deliveredto the Nigerian parliamentin Abuja, Nigeria.
