The Muppets are an institution, with films, music albums, cartoons and merch galore. But it wasn't always this way. Despite the success of Sesame Street, Jim Henson didn't want to be pigeonholed into just a children's entertainer. And thus, The Muppet Show was born, a variety musical sketch show pairing a celebrity guest star with the zany cadre of puppet characters -- something for everyone!

But does the first episode of The Muppet Show hold up? And what actually counts as the pilot of The Muppet Show anyway?

Episode 44 - Mission Hill (1999)

Created by Gene Roddenberry and starring William Shatner, Star Trek delves into complex topics with thoughtful analysis. Still, the magic and promise of Star Trek shines through, even in its rougher beginnings.

Episode 41 - Friday Night Lights (2006)

2006's Friday Night Lights was a massive critical (yet not always commercial) success. Inspire by a book written by his cousin, director Peter Berg adapted the work into a 2004 film. Feeling there was more to dig into though, Berg would rework the concept into a TV show, with a (mostly) all-new cast and story. Does NBC's cult classic still have what it takes to make the varsity squad in 2025? And why does everyone in this town want to sleep with these football players? Chase and Pierce clear their eyes, fill their hearts and attempt to not lose the plot.

Episode 40 - Ping Pong The Animation (2014)

As is tradition on Pilot Program, we cover an anime every tenth episode, and for our 40th show, we're talking about one of Chase's favorites: 2014's Ping Pong The Animation. Based on the manga from Taiyō Matsumoto and directed by Masaaki Yuasa, Ping Pong centers around two high school table tennis players -- one brash and filled with natural talent, and the other who doesn't even seem to really want to be there. With a unique and entracing presentation, Ping Pong pushes past the traditional sports anime to become something more.

Show Notes:

Chase claims mysterious games' reviewer Sushi X wrote for GamePro, but Pierce was correct that it was EGM instead. We deeply regret the error.
Chase also theorizes that Ventus from Kingdom Hearts is another variant/clone of Sora, like Roxas. Ventus is actually a previous Keyblade wielder and the protagonist of Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep. We do not regret this error as Kingdom Hearts' story is ridiculous.
And finally, Chase mentions seeing a behind-the-scenes clip of Ping Pong that shows off the use of Flash animation. Here's the link to that video.

Chase and Pierce analyze the characters, story beats and world of the place dubbed "Silicon Prairie" as we explore this world of early computing.

Episode 38 - The Bronx is Burning (2007)

In 2007, after a failed attempt to create their own original programming, ESPN tried again, adapting Jonathan Mahler book, The Bronx is Burning, into an 8-episode miniseries. Following the 1977 New York Yankees run to the World Series and the wider cultural turmoil of New York City at the time, The Bronx is Burning features big name talent and innovative production solutions to make for a unique show that's been all but forgotten (especially by ESPN and parent company Disney). We take a swing at the show's debut on this episode of Pilot Program.

Hey, welcome to our podcast. Come on in. No, there's nothing in our fridge, but we do have a cornerstone of 2000s-era MTV programming: MTV Cribs. The debut of Cribs is basically lost media at this point, and the copy Chase has is a severely degraded chopped up version someone threw on archive.org a long time ago (and even that upload is gone now). But it's enough that we're able to reminisce about the celebrity home tour show, the changing nature of access to famous people and how Moby kinda sucks.

Episode 34 - Late Night with Conan O'Brien (1993)

Chase and Pierce go back to the '90s to talk about the mechanics of the late night talk show, specifically 1993's Late Night with Conan O'Brien. After a departing David Letterman left NBC down a host, the network made the unconventional decision to go with a young and untested comedy writer with some funky hair that would end up becoming one of the most interesting comedians of his time. We talk about Conan's rise, fall and resurgence, as well as what value these seemingly disposable shows have on a rewatch.

At one point, Chase gets all confused about second generation actors. He says Drew Barrymore isn't (despite being the daughter of actor John Drew Barrymore), and was thinking about Kate Hudson (daughter of Goldie Hawn) when he said Kathryn Hahn. Podcasting is hard sometimes!

Episode 33 - The L Word (2004)

For our first Showtime program for the podcast, Pierce and Chase dive into the world of 2004's The L Word, a groundbreaking show focused on the lives and relationships of a group of lesbians living in Los Angeles (and one straight woman who may just want to join the team). We watched the first part of a two-episode pilot because honestly, we had plenty to talk about from just that.

Chase discusses this unhinged directorial decision in the second episode of Columbo. Here's an image. Now imagine the scene playing in his glasses for over a minute. Wild stuff.
Chase also talked more about watching Nadia The Secret of Blue Water. He mentions the show gets bad after episode 25. It actually happens after episode 22. Somehow that awful desert island arc goes on for EVEN LONGER.

Episode 32 - Columbo (1971)

Columbo is next up on the Pilot Program schedule! We had a couple different pilot options for this one, including some TV movies, but ultimately opted for the first episode of the series proper (it helped that Steven Spielberg directed it.) Listen in as Chase and Pierce talk about this "inverse mystery show," reflect on area codes and make some really bad Peter Falk impressions (OK, only Chase does that) on this ultra-length episode.

Chase mentions the "two-name phenomenon" of, upon learning about a word or phrase or idea, you seem to hear it much more soon after. It's called the Baader–Meinhof phenomenon. You'll probably hear about it again soon.

Episode 29 - A Cook's Tour (2002)

Anthony Bourdain changed the way we watched food television, as well as the way we experienced the world. A Cook's Tour is Bourdain's first TV show, and established many of the hallmarks of his later, more well-known works like No Reservations and Parts Unknown. Chase and Pierce dive into the show's first episode -- a trip to Tokyo -- commenting on Anthony's more raw approach, the mechanics of fitting a show like this into 22 minutes and the absolutely wild music choices of 2002 cable television.

Episode 28 - Monday Night Football (1970)

The 37th longest-running television show on American television, ABC's Monday Night Football is an institution. And while the debut episode in 1970 may not have all your fancy bells and whistles like super slo-mo replays, dedicated sideline reporters or even a graphic showing the score and amount of time on the clock, it did have charm. With the recent merger of the NFL and AFL, the New York Jets (featuring future hall of fame quarterback Joe Namath) and the Cleveland Browns meet for the first time in this historic (if not all that exciting) game.

Episode 19 - Desus & Mero (2016)

On this episode of Pilot Program, Chase and Pierce unearth a time capsule from 2016 in the form of the first episode of Desus & Mero on Viceland (also known as Vice TV).

Pre-COVID, Pre-Trump presidency, but still right in the middle of the Black Lives Matter movement, this clip show/talk show often played for laughs, even when touching on serious news topics of the day. With two young, black, charismatic hosts -- Desus Nice and The Kid Mero -- the show quickly gained an audience, and became a stepping stone to the pair's superstardom.

We break it all down, from the show's roots in ESPN-style formatting, to dunking on Eminem, to the professional split of the show's popular and prolific hosts.

Notes & Corrections:

Chase mistakenly referred to the video game MLB The Show 24 as MLB 2K. There hasn't been an MLB 2K game since 2013. Whoops.
Pierce references a 2019 Vulture "Beginner's Guide to Desus & Mero" article a couple of times over the course of the episode. You can read that article here.
Chase talks about the pilot/test episode of Desus & Mero that never aired, but was recorded before this first episode While the entire episode has never been shown, the interview segment with guest Cord Jefferson is on the show's YouTube channel here.

Episode 18 - Shogun (2024)

Content Warning - In this episode, we discuss some very violent scenes and themes, including ritualistic suicide.

Based on the 1975 James Clavell novel, Shogun is a piece of historical fiction, mirroring the events of Japan in the early 1600s. It's a time of transition in Japanese history, moving from the bloody Sengoku period into the Edo period, but there's a question of who will take power in the vacuum left behind by the previous Taiko's death. Chase and Pierce examine FX's newest show, explore the efforts of its showrunners to maintain authenticity and comment on one specifically odd and prevalent camera choice.

Notes/Corrections:

When talking about the manga, anime and Wachowskis-directed Speed Racer, Chase mentions that "Racer" is not the family's last name. Uh...it actually is. The character's name is Speed Racer (though in Japan, he's known as Go Mifune).

Episode 17 - The A-Team (1983)

On this episode of Pilot Program, Pierce and Chase test out a true classic of the '80s, NBC's The A-Team. A surprise hit of the era, the show would solidify the stardom of Mr. T, spawn a number of memorable catchphrases and become a target for anti-violence media watchdogs despite its tame nature compared to today's crop of shows. But are slow-motion car crashes and one-liners enough to win over our co-pilots? Tune in to find out.

Corrections:

Eddie the Squirrel does not live with CatDog in the cartoon CatDog. He is a member of the Greasers. Chase was thinking of Winslow T. Oddfellow. Pilot Program regrets this error.
While Mr. T is in the WWE Hall of Fame (class of 2014), Cyndi Lauper is not as of yet a WWE Hall of Famer.

Episode 11 - The Shield (2002)

FX is a channel known today for its creative and acclaimed original programming like Atlanta, It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia and Reservation Dogs. But that wasn't always the case. From 1994 to 2001, FX was mostly populated by reruns of The X-Files and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, as well as the occasional movie. But that all changed in 2002 as, hot off the signing of the Patriot Act, FX found an original show to build its programming around - The Shield. Billed as a show about crooked cops who justified their means by their ends, The Shield resonated with a country still frightened by the threat of terrorism. But does The Shield still resonate in 2023? Let's find out.

Episode 6 - Blue Blazes (2014)

Japan, 1980. It's an era where the fashion and culture of young people are in full bloom. And Moyuru Hono is entering his first year at the Osaka University of Arts. Blue Blazes is a 2014 Japanese live-action comedy based on the manga by Kazuhiko Shimamoto about his time at college, and the friendships and rivalries he developed on his path to becoming a mangaka. Despite being live action, Blue Blazes takes many production cues from the world of anime and manga to create something that feels both foreign and familiar.

Episode 5 - In Living Color (1990)
