As we reach the end of two weeks of debate and dialogue, @TheGreenAmanda asks guest Seema Joshi from Global Witness to reflect on some of the key themes at this year’s COP. Since the Paris agreement global banks have lent $157bn to businesses which drive deforestation, so are we really serious about protecting global rainforests? With the 503 delegates representing the interests of fossil fuel companies outnumbering those from the largest country, did this COP duck the challenge of cutting our ties with fossil fuels? Will the non-binding words of commitments made be backed by hard hitting and rigidly enforced regulation and law? As Green and Blue Zones held separate gatherings, were those whose lives and livelihoods are being affected most by climate change given the opportunity to be part of the negotiations? Did this COP step up to the plate or was it just – in the words of activist Greta Thunburg – just another “blah blah blah”?

The ancient art of silvopasture could be set to, quite literally, change the landscape of British farming.

Currently the subject of a 12 year trial run by farmers, Rothamsted Research, The Woodland Trust, The Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group (FWAG) and Innovative Farmers, silvopasture (a traditional method of farming livestock with trees) is thought to sequester additional carbon, reduce flooding, increase drought-resilience, improve animal health and wellbeing and boost biodiversity. But will it work in the UK? Scientists and farmers in Devon have combined forces to find out. We talked to two key people involved in the trial; Andy Gray, commercial farmer at Elston Farm in Devon and Dr Robert Dunn, a scientist at Rothamsted Research, who specialises on reducing the environmental impact of agriculture.

In this special Planet Pod episode Amanda catches up with renowned arctic explorer, advocate and visionary Pen Hadow who talks about what inspired him to push the boundaries of exploration in the arctic region.

Pen describes the disturbing truth of what he has seen with his own eyes - the gradual destruction of what he calls the "floating ice reef ecosystem" of the arctic. He highlights the vulnerability of an entire habitat from unchecked commercial fishing, international shipping and mineral extraction in the region.

Pen then gives a call to action for all of us to tackle climate change and highlights the important international advocacy work of the 90o North Unit.

The 90ºNorth Unit, founded by Pen, is the only organisation exclusively dedicated to protecting the wildlife and floating ice-reef ecosystem in the Arctic Ocean’s international waters. The Unit is catalysing the conservation process within the United Nations to create the world’s largest protected marine area by 2032.

Planet Pod sits down on Lambeth Bridge during Extinction Rebellion's recent Day of Action in London

In this short Planet Pod Special we join Amanda as she sat down in the middle of Lambeth bridge and joined around 1000 supporters of Extinction Rebellion's recent Day of Action in London - a peaceful protest to highlight the urgency of the climate crisis facing the world and the need for action now. Amanda spoke to a number of fellow protesters and got a sense of why they feel so passionately about the issue and why this type of peaceful action is needed. More than 70 people were arrested in the protest which blocked Blackfriars, Waterloo, Westminster, Lambeth and Southwark bridges. Coordinated action took place at sites around the UK and the globally.

Extinction Rebellion is a campaign by the network. It aims to promote a fundamental change of our political and economic system to one which maximises well-being and minimises harm.
