Jake Bird was arrested in 1947 after murdering Bertha and Beverly Kludt in their Tacoma home, using an axe he found on their property. That might seem like the end of the story but Bird’s reign of terror didn’t stop there—he shockingly confessed to being involved in over 40 additional murders throughout the United States, potentially making him one of the most prolific serial killers in U.S. history, as well as, a potential suspect in crimes that occurred in numerous states all over the country at the time. Susi Larsen, had a promising future. She was a 24-year-old graphic designer and vibrant young woman living in Lake Oswego. In August of 1996 she was eagerly preparing for her wedding that September to her fiancé Keith Hibley. The couple had a unique love story, having met while working at Mattel in California—Susi in the Barbie division and Keith in Hot Wheels. It was just weeks until their big day when Susi showed up at the Tigard apartment of a male acquaintance to pick up jewelry she intended to purchase for the wedding. But that was before suddenly going missing without a trace. When Susi didn’t show up for work the next day, her loved ones grew alarmed and launched a frantic search and quickly involved law enforcement. Their investigation would reveal that it was the same male acquaintance she had visited, Billy Oatney Jr., that was the last known person to see Susi. He quickly became a person of interest after a routine traffic stop revealed a whole host of suspicious items in his vehicle. Though Susi’s mysterious disappearance would not remain unsolved for long, the heartbreaking details of her final moments would leave her family and friends shattered and in disbelief. Susi left a legacy of love that would carry those closest to her through not one, but two trials, for the man responsible for her brutal death. We’ve included information about the memorial fund established partly in her honor below.

Delve into the tragic tale of Tacoma’s top cop family. The story of David Brame, along with his wife and children shook the communities of Tacoma, Gig Harbor, and surrounding areas of Washington state to their very core. The stories of violent and coercive behavior, as well as sexual misconduct behind the scenes while David Brame served as the Tacoma Police will leave you outraged.  

Beneath the wholesome all-American image that was portrayed, there were dark, disturbing secrets. Brame's career was marred by accusations of rape and sexual coercion, covered up by the very department sworn to protect the public. The manipulation and control extended into his personal life. His wife, Crystal, endured years of psychological and physical abuse. Her attempts to escape his grasp were met with terrifying retaliation and manipulation. She finally got the courage to file for divorce leading to a cascade of escalating threats and intimidation from her recently estranged husband David Brame, culminating in a tragic murder-suicide. On April 26, 2003, Brame shot Crystal in a public parking lot, before taking his own life, leaving their two children to witness the horrifying event.

We'll uncover the chilling details of David Brame's abuse, the horrifying systemic corruption that enabled his actions, and the devastating impact to not only those closest to the couple, but the community at large. It's a sobering reminder of the dangers so many women encounter. Domestic violence continues to threaten the lives of women and children the world-over, but the haunting depiction of that abuse paired with a partner wielding nearly unchecked power emphasizes the urgent need for accountability within law enforcement and society as a whole, particularly because, far too often, it’s a matter of life and death. We’ll put together the puzzling pieces of the unsettling case beginning with a bizarre incident involving Jerry and Lynn at a local park. Their meeting with a potential buyer for their fishing boat takes a dark turn when an unknown man attacks them, leaving Lynn in the hospital severely injured, and Jerry missing. As we piece together the events, Lynn provides crucial details about their meeting with a man named Dave, raising questions about the true motives behind this violent encounter and the confusion that ensues.

In 2004, their tranquil lives take a dark turn after Ralph Jr. encounters a psychic, Rachel Lee, during a trip to Bend, Oregon. Rachel, with a knack for cons, would insidiously infiltrate the Raines family. As Ralph Sr. succumbs to ill-health, Rachel becomes his caregiver, gaining control of the estate’s financial affairs.

The scam intensifies as Rachel conspires with her daughter, Porsha Lee, who disguises herself as an Englishwoman named Mary Marks. From there several plot lines unfold, each wilder than the last: a sham wedding, fake pregnancies, and stolen identity. All of which would play a part in the devious financial schemes and deception, as the Lee family began siphoning millions from the Raines family estate.

Discover how the Raines men were led astray by a clairvoyant con-artist as the Lees orchestrate the sale of the tree farm, pilfering the proceeds before going on to drain various accounts all while leaving an apparent trail of their financial abuse. Authorities, alerted by keen detectives, would finally expose the fraudulent scheme but only through court proceedings would the extent of the manipulation would be revealed.

Despite the devastation, Ralph Jr. remains resilient, optimistic that the clear-cut land will one day flourish again. The Raines family legacy, once marred by deception, has now become a story of resilience and hope for the future, even amidst the most devastating of wreckages.
