Welcome to this weekend’s Pod Ponder. I’m Ginni Saraswati, [echo sound effect] expanding your mind and [possible cave/spelunking sound effect? along these lines] exploring your brain.

It’s Saturday once again my friends, which can only mean one thing: it’s time to challenge your perceptions, think outside the box and—well… ask you a really offbeat question!

Picture it: You’ve just awoken on a beautiful spring morning, the sun is shining, and it’s time for you to go off to your office job… where you’ll spend the next 8 hours behind a computer, inside a cubicle.

If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably had this exact experience many times over. In fact, maybe you’re having it right now.

But imagine: instead of experiencing a bland 9-5, you enter the building at 9 only to find yourself immediately back in the parking lot at 5—with seemingly no time having passed at all. [record scratch] Somehow, you’ve skipped the actual work experience.

For our ponder this week, we’re drawing inspiration from Apple TV’s new dark comedy Severance, which lampoons modern corporate culture.

On the show, workers undergo a voluntary procedure in order to surgically sever their brains into two sections: one for personal life and one for work life, allowing the employee’s outside brain to live a blissfully work free life, while subjecting the inside brain to an endless cycle of drudgery without respite.

So, what say you, ponderers? If you could, would you undergo this so-called “severance” if you never had to experience work again?

Pushkin’s Bad Women is a podcast series told by historian Hallie Rubenhold. Often portrayed as scandalous “ladies of the night”, it brings long-deserved dignity to the victims. The real lives of the women at the center of this century-spanning mystery have been historically dismissed, but this show brings them back to the center where they belong.

If you feel like you’re in a tug of war between true crime and dinner-table appropriate history-chat (well, I guess it depends on the dinner party…) then Bad Women might be the dish you’re looking for.

I think I’ll just settle in here now with a spot of tea, a few biscuits, and my….my…wait, where are my earbuds?!?!

PodGuide: We Understood the Assignment?!

Welcome to PodGuide, a bite-sized dose of pod knowledge from me, Ginni Media’s Ginni-in-Chief.

We’re back this week with some interesting new statistics from Edison Research that may just indicate a shift in the way we podcast.

The major surprise? Americans ages 12-34 have actually decreased their podcast listening—by a whopping 6% in the last year. That’s the first decrease podcasting has seen in over a decade!

So, just as the Millennials killed diamond rings, paper napkins, and home buying, are they now working with Gen-Z to signal the death of podcasts?!

Not so fast—let’s hold our horses on that one...

While we did see one demographic decrease, listeners ages 34-54 have actually increased by 4% in the last 12 months. Experts credit this the fact that many have now gone back to the office in light of lifted COVID restrictions.

Now, we don’t love to see any decrease in listeners, but we think the most likely culprit for the Zoomer-led drop is the media's perennial enemy: dwindling attention spans.

In this case, we’d like to lay blame squarely at the feet of TikTok, which has seen a whopping 57% usage increase in the last year.

It’s almost as if someone should marry the two ideas… sort of like a short, sweet, 60 second podcast… like sweet little podcast nuggets… or perhaps even… pod pops?! Someone should definitely get on that idea!

When you listen to your favorite podcasts, do you get the feeling that you’re entering a sacred space where hosts can tap into taboo subjects without judgement?

Hey! It’s Ginni here with your weekly dose of news from the Land of Pod.

If you were lucky enough to have cable TV in the 90s, then you probably remember this iconic intro:

The Real World was a groundbreaking lifestyle-documentary series that launched our appetite for reality TV. Over 33 seasons, audiences worldwide witnessed complex conversations around race relations, gender, homosexuality, and AIDS.

Part of what made it so special was the “realness” of the cast and the show’s ability to deep dive into serious issues with real humans, learning as they go.

Podcasting shares a lot with this dedication to “getting real”. A recent Acast survey of 1,000 listeners demonstrated that podcasts are revered as safe spaces for talking and learning about the intricacies of less talked about topics. Pods have become a place for real-talk about mental health, financial debt, medical issues and sexual health,

Among those surveyed, 57% said they turn to podcasts for conversations around sensitive topics, and a whopping 92% said they feel open to hearing such conversations covered on their favorite pods.

So, if you’re looking for a safe space to explore the “real” real world, then what are you waiting for? There are only about 900,000 podcasts for you to choose from!

PodTip: Keep Hands and Feet Inside the Vehicle.

Good Morning Poptastic PodPoppers! Rub your eyes, put on your slippers, and brew your coffee because it’s time for another week of PodPops from yours truly, Ginni Popaswati.

Today's tip may come as a sad one for fans of S Club Seven’s 2001 summer hit, because we’re actually advising that you do, in fact, stop moving.

I know, I know… What am I thinking right… Next I'll be telling you Kylie was wrong and you should get me out of your head. Or that the truth of the matter is, it was Shaggy. He did do it… Buuut this is more justified than you might think.

When you begin to record but can’t sit still, you will likely create lots of background noise whilst you're speaking or listening. This can be especially bad if you use earbud headphones with the mic part way down the cable - you know the ones I mean. The wire lays close to your chest and, as you wiggle and jiggle, it rubs against your shirt and collar. The resulting noise will do nothing but distract your listeners and it's difficult to remove in post production - believe us, we’ve tried.

So do your best to stay still with your feet planted, avoid moving your pens and pencils around on your desk, and if you’ve got notes on paper, try moving them as silently as possible.

Pod Review: Podcast Weebys, Oscar Wobblies, and Whoa

In this week’s Pod Review, sooooo many things have been happening in podcasting, news and media that all of it kind of felt a little like a slap in the face.

Listen, the incident I’m referring to has gotten enough attention, so I WILL not refer to it, but let’s just say, that was a moment that most certainly did not Rock.

To PodNews this week, The Weebys have decided to do their own thing when it comes to podcast awards. That’s right. Last week, and only a week after The Ambies (aka The Podcast Academy), The Weeby’s launched The Signal Awards, set to take place in Jan 2023.

Popular company Rode are now producing their own headphones to add to their audio / audible yet not edible products.

And the latest Edison Research report on the key statistics in podcasting for 2022 were released just over a week ago. And, the key takeaway here is:

For the first time in 9 years, podcasting didn’t grow.

So what does this mean for us podcasters, pod-crazed and producing folk? There are two demographics that are currently underserved in podcasting. Listeners aged 12-34 and 55 and over. Senior Vice President of Strategy and Marketing at Edison Research, Tom Webster says that the industry will “only keep growing if the entire industry makes a concerted effort to tell the story of podcasting to all Americans.” So podpoppers, we must continue to review our content and see where our shows can serve the needs and interests of these audiences.

Happy Saturday, dear listeners. It’s that time again for some mental calisthenics! This week’s ponderous ponder begins on November 24, 1971.

A well dressed man in a suit and tie boards Northwest Orient Airlines flight 305 in Portland, Oregon enroute to Seattle.

He takes his seat, orders a bourbon and soda and, shortly after takeoff, hands a flight attendant a note indicating that he has in his possession a bomb and intends to hijack the plane. He demands $200,000 in US currency and four parachutes.

Eventually, his demands are met, no passengers are harmed, and the man—soon to be infamous as D.B. Cooper—disappears from an airborne plane into the night, never to be seen again.

A very strange story, indeed. And one that remains unsolved to this day!

So, dear listeners, I ask you: if you could solve any one unanswered question from all of history, which would you choose? Maybe the mystery of Jack the Ripper’s identity? The Bermuda Triangle? Perhaps even the death of Edgar Allen Poe?

Well, I don’t know about you, but I think it’s time to turn some lights on around here and focus on something a little less… creepy...

Pod Guide: Fun for the Whole Family!

Welcome to PodGuide, a bite-sized dose of pod knowledge from me, Ginni Media’s Ginni-in-Chief.

Today, I’m back with some table-turning pod stats: It turns out podcast listeners aren’t just avocado toast eating, oat milk latte drinking Millennials after all!

Of course, this is something I, your podcasting guru, knew all along—but it’s always nice to see the numbers to back things up.

According to Edison Research, 51% of Americans over the age of 12 have listened to podcasts, while over 70% of Americans are familiar with podcasts in general.

Even more impressive? Over 80 million Americans are weekly podcast listeners, accounting for almost 30% of the total US population.

And that’s nothing to sneeze at, considering just 15 years ago only 22% of Americans even knew what a podcast was!

Well, well, well. Sounds like podcasting isn’t so much a trend, after all. I think it’s pretty safe to say that the medium is here to stay.

Lucky for us, more podcasts pop up on the daily, meaning there’s truly a show out there for every age, interest, and attention span.

PodReport: Audio Happy Meals

Did you know there was a time before Happy Meals?

Yes, it’s true. Those were the culinary dark ages for kids everywhere…forced to stare at lackluster plates, pushing peas around their plates with forks, and no toy rewards tucked into the depths of playful boxes.

Boooooring…..

Well, it seems podcasting too, has finally begun packaging audio for young ears.

In the past 2 years, podcasts in the kids and family category have seen a 20 percent increase in listenership according to Edison Research.

The famous PBS Cartoon Arthur ended a 25-year run in February, but was quickly scooped up and resurrected as a podcast by Gen-Z Media this year.

The Ambie’s added, for the first time, an award category for Best Kid’s Podcast, which featured kid-approved favorites Nice to Meet You and The Big Fib.

Heavy hitter studios like Warner Bros, Spotify, and Wondery are also growing their younger audiences with youth-oriented shows.

So, if you’re looking for creative ways to entertain the kiddos but you’d prefer to skip the screentime, opt for fine-tuning their listening skills with a few family-friendly podcasts.

PodTip: Ginnilocks and the Three Microphone Positions

Good Morning Team PodPops and welcome to a new weeks of Pops with Ginni Media. On todays PopTip we’re going to talk about the wonderful and mysterious art of microphone technique.

Microphone technique actually has a lot of parallels with Goldilocks and the three bears. You don’t want to be too hot, you don’t want to be too cold, you want to be right in that sweet spot where it’s just right. Also, if you get it wrong there is every chance you may get eaten by a bear. So let’s go through how to get it right

First, try to get your microphone at the same height as your mouth. This doesn’t have to be exact, just make sure it isn’t on the floor. Then sit 6-8 inches back and, if you have one, place a pop filter between your mouth and the mic.

Next, start a test recording and speak into the mic from a comfortable position. If the recording is too quite, turn up the volume a notch, and if it’s too loud, vice versa. It’s important to do this test as authentically a you can. If you’re going to whisper the podcast, don’t yell during the test!

Remember, the closer you are the mic, the louder your voice will sound. While you can alter your voice’s volume level during post-production to keep it consistent, reduce your editing time by keeping your mouth the same distance from the mic while recording.

Happy Saturday, dear listeners. It’s that time, once again, for a stroll through your psyche and into the world of the offbeat.

Our ponder this week draws its inspiration from podcasting’s reigning ratings champion: true crime.

If you were sitting on death row—remember, this is all hypothetical!—and given your choice of a last meal, what would you choose? I’ll be extra generous and allow you your choice of any food or beverage you’ve ever eaten or drank.

Personally, I like to use this as an icebreaker at parties—you get to learn a lot about a person through their food preferences… so long as they’re not scared away by the question!

So, listener, what would you choose? A chocolate malt from your childhood ice cream parlor? A bottle of the fancy champagne you had on your honeymoon? Maybe just a good, old fashioned Taco Bell bean burrito… No judgment here!

Hey all you PodPoppers, it’s Ginni with your weekly roundup of rankings!

So, I think I’m gonna need to change the name of these updates to CrimePops. Spending another week perched pretty at the top of the charts is Crime Junkie.

Last week’s episode gave listeners a dose of closure, as a murder mystery from 2020 was finally resolved with the help of a DNA genealogical database. But, no spoilers here! You’ll have to tune in to get answers.

In the number 2 spot, Stuff You Should Know served up a little…hate? Well, they actually went on a deeper exploration into the nature of hate and the emotions it stems from.

Could this mean alarm clocks aren’t inherently terrible and the nature of my hatred for them runs deeper?

No, no, no….they’re inherently terrible.

Rounding out the top 3 this week on “Crimepops”, it’s...you guessed it, more true crime. Dateline NBC snagged a top spot in the ears of listeners with a throwback episode about a rekindled romance gone wrong.

PodGuide: The Princess and the Pod

Welcome, welcome to PodGuide, a bite-sized dose of pod knowledge from me, Ginni Media’s Ginni-in-Chief.

Today, I’ve got some exciting news from everyone’s favorite royal expats: It seems Meghan, Duchess of Sussex—formerly known as Meghan Markle—is gearing up to begin her very own podcast this summer.

In preparation for the launch, Meghan and husband Prince Harry founded their own production company, Archewell Audio, and signed a $25 million deal with Spotify a little over a year ago.

While the topic of the show is still underwraps, it’s probably safe to assume that Meghan will use the platform to further her advocacy for causes near and dear to her heart like the promotion of gender equality and social justice reforms.

Though we commend Meghan for using her voice to create change and spread awareness, we’d love for her to cover a few other pressing questions like:

What, exactly, is happening with Prince William’s hairline?
Does the Queen ever put that purse down?
And tell us, which is the most haunted of the royal palaces? Is it Sandringham? Buckingham? Windsor?

Can you guess which popular pod these very enthusiastic reviews are referring to? I’ll give you a hint…you eat it for breakfast.

Hey everybody, it’s Ginni here with another tasty bowl of PodPops for your morning enjoyment. And today, we’re talking about…Serial!

But… not the kind you eat for breakfast. That was just a hint, remember?

The award-winning Serial with an “S” that first graced our ears back in 2014.

Why? Because the Ambie’s Podcast Awards have bestowed upon their team a great honor.

Last week, co-creators Sarah Koenig and Julia Snyder accepted The Ambie’s Board of Governors Award in recognition of the impact that Serial has had on the podcasting industry.

In 2014, we were well acquainted with what it meant to binge a series on Netflix, but the whole “bingeing a podcast” thing wasn’t on anyone’s radar until that first season of Serial.

So, today, let’s raise a cup of coffee to the cultural audio phenomenon that helped bring podcasting where it is today.

Hey, it’s Ginni and welcome to a new week of Peter Pipers pickled PopPoppin, pepper tips! That little sneak peek into my pre-recording routine which seems like a well-written and very subtle transition into our audio tip for today!

Of course, it’s warm up your voice!

It shouldn’t surprise you that recording a podcast episode requires a bit of talking. Rather than going into your session after rolling out of bed, warm up your mouth by practicing your script or saying a few tongue twisters. Properly warming up will improve your dictation, articulation and keep you from stumbling over words.

But I can’t really convey throwing sheets of paper up in the air and swivelling around in my chair in audio so we’ll leave that for the video version….

In this week’s pod review, let’s talk about podcasting.

I know I know. Ain’t that obvious? What’s come across my desk this week is this concept: podcasting has been so focused on growing their shows, repurposing their content, and spreading their message far and wide that it can be quite easy to forget why we started the podcast in the first place. So now the focus is on everything but the podcast. IS your pod your priority? Are you just podding along?

My friends, podcasting is magic. It’s audio Netflix. It’s a place of connection, entertainment and conversation. Start there and even though its’ easy to lose focus, let’s all find our way back home to podcasts.

Picture yourself in a second hand bookshop on a warm, bright day. Sunshine streams through the windows and creates ripples in the dusty air. You come upon a book you’ve never heard of before with an intriguing title and beautiful cover art…

Later, as you sit at an outdoor cafe sipping a latte and getting a start on your new reading, you realize this isn’t just any book—this book is, undoubtedly, the story of your own life.

So, what do you do? Do you continue reading? Do you return it to the shop? Do you bind it with rocks and throw it in the river? Maybe have a friend read it and tell you how everything turns out?

Hmmm… Just a little something to ponder while you’re enjoying that lovely sunshine this weekend.

So in light of current events, I thought I’d highlight some of the most streamed episodes from a few different pods if you’re looking for more information about what’s happening.

And because this is a global-reaching crisis, we’re going to see what’s trending around the world.

In the US, The Daily released 2 top-streaming episodes last week: The Story Behind a War Defining Photo, and How Russians See the War in Ukraine.
In Canada, CBC’s Front Burner released The Risks of a No-fly Zone over Ukraine
In the UK, The Guardian’s podcast Today in Focus put out an episode called The Wagner Group’s Shadow Mission in Ukraine.
And my friends over in Australia, what are they listening to? Last week’s episode of the Guardian’s Full Story called What’s Driving Vladamir Putin’s Assault on Ukraine raked in the ratings.

So, there you have it. Let’s hope that next week brings some positive news on this front. Cheers to that!

PodGuide: Podcasts… for Her?!

Welcome, welcome to PodGuide, a bite-sized dose of pod knowledge from me, Ginni Media’s Ginni-in-Chief.

In light of Women’s History Month, it’s only appropriate that today we take a brief dive into the ever-evolving stats around women and podcasting.

According to new info out from The Spoken Word Audio Report, representation is—shockingly!—more important than ever.

In fact, over 60% of listeners turn to Spoken Word Audio that’s “made for people like [them],” while 55% of listeners turn to Spoken Word Audio for “hosts [they] identify with.”

In another recent study, nearly 70% of female respondents said they prefer female-led lifestyle podcasts.

Hmm… so, let’s get this straight: most women podcast listeners prefer programming for women, by women? [heavy sarcasm] Well that’s something we never could’ve predicted.

The good news? There’s never been a better time as a woman to find—or create!—content that’s tailor made to your specific needs and interests. Pretty cool if you ask me!

PodReport: Humans Gonna Be Human

Last week, I shared some stats about what women were listening to, and one of the top genres was True Crime. Which seems crazy because by and large, women are overwhelmingly the victims of most crime.

So, why are we listening to so many podcasts about crime? Well according to Hannah Maguire and Suruthi Bala, hosts of the podcast Redhanded, when it comes to shock factor, humans are like bees looking for a sugar high.

They say stories about true crime, quote, “..shift a lot more papers than happy stories about kittens and balls of string.”

But, there’s more.... Maguire and Bala explain that our fascination with death is one of the most human traits we possess. And, the male-dominated arena of these acts and conversations has traditionally kept women at a distance; war being the best example.

Podcasts about true crime give us a safe, women-led space to explore our fascination with death. And most importantly, we can do it on our terms.

PodTips: Music in My Ears

Good Morning to all the Podpoppers out there! I’m your host Ginni Saraswati and it’s my pleasure to bring to you a new week of Ginni Media Pop Pops, your daily dose of podcasting news, hacks and advice.

Unfortunately that also means that today is Monday and we’re all dragging ourselves out of bed, the coffee machine is brewing, the hydrating eye patches are out of the fridge… Or maybe you’re still working from home and just have to sit at your desk in your dressing gown.

Whatever the case is, here is your PodTip to help time go a little faster on Mondays? Throw a clock!

Yeah… No… Of course that isn’t todays tip, but it might help with stress relief?

Here is a real tip for you, and for our second ever PodTip, it’s our second most common piece of advise. Record with headphones! (your guest too)

While it’s possible to record a podcast episode without headphones, you’ll probably catch a lot of audio feedback.

If possible, have everyone wear headphones so you don’t have to waste precious editing hours cleaning it up.

While a set of earbud headphones will do, we recommend ones that fully cover the ears.

Hey there all you pod addicts, it’s Ginni and I’ve got a roundup of last week’s pod rankings coming at you like a hot batch of your Granny’s best cinnamon rolls this morning!

Topping the US charts, it’s love with a side of cultish conviction for listeners of Twin Flames. This podcast from Wondery launched at the end of February and people are tuning in to this story about YouTube love gurus who take a by-all-means-necessary approach to their matchmaking services.

Number 1 on Apple and number 3 spot on Spotify it’s long-time top-ranking The Daily from the New York Times. The second most-listened-to episode across all charts last week was their coverage on the ground in Ukraine. Check out On the Road with Ukraine’s Refugees to hear it.

And, at number 3, it’s just, ya know, your usual, everyday, lighthearted murder! Morbid: A True Crime Podcast is hosted by a hairstylist and an autopsy technician. Apparently, we love our crime with a side of funny. Is that where “funny bone” comes from?

PodGuide: Open Source

Welcome, welcome to Pod Guide, a bite-sized dose of pod knowledge from me, Ginni Media’s Ginni-in-Chief.

To honor our very first episode of Pod Guide, it only makes sense that we should start at the beginning!

As a renowned podcaster myself, I’m always grateful for the trailblazers of this relatively new entertrainment source—but have you ever wondered who did it first?

According to many, journalist Christopher Lydon’s “Open Source” was the world’s very first podcast.

Beginning in 2003 as an RSS feed of audio files out of Cambridge, Massachusetts, Lydon, along with his co-creators, had a vision of using MP3s to record a syndicated show. They came up with the idea in response to what they saw as the frustrating monotony of mainstream media.

According to producer Mary McGrath, the team, “...thought that the internet could erase the limitations of radio.”

Hmmm… is it possible our girl Mary was also a bit of a podcast psychic?

“Open Source” can still be heard on air today, making it not only the first podcast, but the world’s oldest active podcast, too.

PodReport: Crime Junkies

Welcome to the best and most entertaining pod news source on this side of the Milky Way! I’m Ginni, and have I got news for you:

Last Tuesday was International Women’s Day…whoop whoop!

[Sound of a female saying something with big attitude, like “Oh, you go girl!!!” or “Get it, girl!”]

So that begs the question, what ARE women listening to? A recent survey from Triton Digital shows that there’s a clear winner among podcast categories. And the winner is……

Truuuuueeee Crime!!!

Women are tuning in weekly to podcasts like Crime Junkie, Morbid: A True Crime Podcast, and My Favorite Murder. These shows have an interesting thread in common in that they all present these true tales of terrible events in a manner that lightens the load with a bit of laughter.

I guess if there’s a good way to take your murder, it’s with a spoonful of laughter.

You know, ‘cause it’s the best medicine….?

In other news, the audio platform Deezer is making a special effort to highlight women in podcasting. Throughout the month of March, their homepage will feature pod playlists hosted by women, and they now have a “100% Women” filter for seeking out new and brilliant female voices in both the pod and music worlds.

So, let’s hear it for the ladies….get out and hear some new voices this week, y’all! And if you’re a lady pod-pro, thanks for bringing your voice to the table!

PodTips: Think of Your Environment

Good Morning and welcome to the first ever Ginni Media Pod Pops episode! Your daily dose of podcasting news, hacks, advice and pop culture. That tired eye, groggy head, slow start feeling can mean only one thing - it must be a Monday… Which means its a PodTip day!

PodTip Mondays are when I share some audio hacks and advice to try to help you understand and improve all those pesky technical and logistical queries that come along with having your own Podcast. We’re going to start off the week with the most common piece of advice we tell our podcasters: Think about your environment!

Now obviously you are limited to what you have available, and we don’t all have access to a recording studio - but here’s the thing - you don’t need on. Here are a few things to consider before recording:

- Block out noise from the outside. Close all doors and windows to hide those New York Sirens.

- No machines running except your podcasting equipment. We don’t wanna hear your AC unit.

- Lots of soft materials like couches, rugs, blankets, and carpeting to reduce reverb. We weren’t joking when we said build a pillow fort.

Hopefully you can take even just one bit of this advice onto your next recording and improve the listening experience for your audience.
