It's the P & W Holiday Special!

There's a small foreword where I jabber some personal lore and propose to the 10 listeners of Hiatus Peaks, y'all know how to find me ;)

Then, I read from Bagombo Snuff Box, another collection of Uncle Kurt's short stories, a little gem called, "A Present for Big Saint Nick". In which an obnoxious, manipulative, petty blowhard throws his annual hostage situation- er- Christmas party and it's one no one will ever forget.

I close it out with one of my poems for the end of the year. We made it, babies! We're here.

May we all receive what we deserve in this season of reckoning.

Thank you for allowing me into your life, for spending your time with me, for letting me play. I love you. Merry Happy Winter Observations to all.

To define self, one must first be able to have the breathing room to distinguish the forest from the trees. As the spaces around letters tell us how to read them and the negative space around art gives us context for an image, so can creation gifts us opportunity for expansion and clarity. Elisheva and I turn over every card in the deck and then make up a few of our own in the damn near 3 HOUR conversation and I wouldn't trade a damn second.

Breaking down boundaries is the name of game. Why do we insist on separating our heads from our bodies? The mind is not better than our animal selves and doesn't know more. We are consistently being told who we are, what we should be doing, and whom we should be doing it for. Fuck that. Growth happens when we expand and accept all parts of ourselves, as people and in community. Resist against those who preach division and fear. Content does not exist, there is only art and effort and there is no real failure in art. Lean into the discomfort, that is also home. This world is ours to make, and revise.

Season 3 is gonna kick so much ass.

So we meet again! Is anyone else as surprised as I am? All right. Hi, babies. This is Michael, and this whole thing is my fault. If you found Poems & Whiskey during the hiatus, things are about to change. Long form, rambling, mostly (?) sober conversations are back in about two weeks. I've got so many awesome artists lined up. Oh, God. I'm almost as nervous as I was in season one.

I do have a couple of announcements.

Third Wednesdays with Kurt will now be a regular segment. Third Wednesdays with Kurt are where I read something of Kurt Vonnegut's Dramatically. Because I want to, because I love him. And everybody should hear, at least something of Kurt Vonnegut in their lives. The show will still be bimonthly, but every third episode will be that dramatic reading of something of Kurt's, likely not to exceed an hour. We'll see how it goes. So if that's your jam, please come and hang out with me. Kurt Vonnegut is amazing, and he will change your life.

Last announcement is, look at my cover art for this season! I'm so fucking proud of my album dupes for these upcoming seasons. Oh, look at my works! Behold! I have up to season five made so no one tell me what happens in the third act. Cool? Cool. We'll see if I can make it to season five.

I don't know if y'all remember, but when I started this whole thing, I was like, well, let's see if I can make it to. If I could do one year. If I do one year, I'll make it to three years. If I do three years. Let's see what I can do after that. Um, so, uh, here we are at three years. We'll see what happens, right? Okay, that's that's enough, that's enough, that's enough. I love you all. And I will see you in season three.

Happy Halloween Y'all! Trick or Treat!

What is the maddest thing a man can do? No. Not die. It's releasing an unedited podcast episode! Duh. The Horror!!!

This special is even more chaotic than usual, if you can imagine. It is 3 hours of pure, undiluted, unedited poetical puddle jumping but I don't think we actually got around to talking about poetry. We are pretty funny. Figures lol I guess the Spotify Genre Sibyls were right about me after all. I do cry at the end, so you have that to look forward to. It is tempting to identify with what we make, but what we produce is not the sum of our parts. We must to allow what galvanizes, to strike and use it for what we will. We are the "imperfect blessings" of creator and creature locked in the same body. Every creative act does something terrible and wonderful and it is up to us to decide what that means.

In fairy tales orphaned children often must attempt a task multiple times until they get it just right to get the magic to let them go. The children must be tested though, or they won't be strong enough to actually break the spell. Which is just a long way of saying, to every time there is a season. Which is just a snotty way of saying, chill, you're fine. This is how it goes. Richard and I talk about our creations and how they earn their way through the forest of the subconscious to become what we hope them to be and we get into his book a little too!

Francesca and I dig into the tender, wet, smelly, underbelly of creation and poke at it until it squeals. (Which is how writing is made, children.) You have to have a special sort of courage (or dumbassery) to create anything real for yourself, much less create something real for other people. You have to be willing to puncture...you know what? This metaphor's getting too gross.

Let's pivot into love, similarly tender and unctuous. When you were a kid, what did you love doing more than anything? How did you play? Where do you get to play now? Did you know you're still allowed?

When I break from interviewing this winter, I still want to create something with all y'all. Enter The Hiatus Zone!

What do you need to do to join? Simple! Pick horror, spec, or surrealist poetry or flash fiction you like, or that you've written, record yourself reading it (or send me the text and I'll happily read it for you) and I'll edit them together into 15 to 30 minute episodes. Clearly this is based on the Twilight Zone so use that for your base if you're unclear about themes.

I said I was gonna do it and I did by damn! In the second TWK, I read the first two chapters from the 50th Anniversary edition of Slaughterhouse-Five : The Children's Crusade released by Modern Library a division of Penguin Random House LLC. I do alright for the most part. My German accent is very silly and my English one is sorta Irish. I do not regret it though. I had a nice time and that's nothing to sniff at.

I of course own nothing and make no profit from this little venture. In fact, I lose money every month on this road to no where, so put that in your pipe and smoke it.

and then there's me...sorry bit of a let down after Kurt but hey...

Caroline and I talk and talk and talk and generally have a merry old time. We discuss finding the people to support us and our goals and how, cliché as it may sound, all things do happen in their own time. We hit on the dreaded fallow times of low creation and ways to cope. She highly recommends hiring John Compton and I concur lol. But in all seriousness it it all comes back to the community you create and support and connecting with yourself. Remember, while the hard times are harding and good times aren't gooding, you are still growing and changing more into yourself. Meet yourself with compassion, yes even that gross bit you don't want anyone to see. You can do more things than you could ever imagine because life will sure as fuck will find a way to make sure they do.

Topic? What topic? Was there supposed to be topic in the episode because I certainly cant find it!! At least...not in this first part. That's right Void-of-My-Heart, this the first two-parter! Seo and I have so much to share with each other and I didn't want a bit of it lost (also a storm knocked us off recording the first night, so we did this two nights in a row). We get deep into our personal inspirations of spirit and form, other wise known as television and movies.
