It is time to uncover a topic that is taboo in many communities and families, as we lift the feelings of shame and guilt that is often associated with it. While accurate information regarding rates and trends on self-mutilation are difficult to come by because the majority of incidents go unreported, the following known facts are alarming: Each year, 1 in 5 females and 1 in 7 males engage in self injury/harm 90 percent of people who engage in self harm begin during their teen or pre-adolescent years Nearly 50 percent of those who engage in self injury activities have been sexually abused Females comprise 60 percent of those who engage in self harm behavior About 50 percent of those who engage in self mutilation begin around age 14 and carry on into their 20s Many of those who self injure report learning how to do so from friends or pro self injury websites Approximately two million cases are reported annually in the U.S. Tune it to learn more about these alarming statistics including many causes, the dangerous effects and how to get help.

Terra Gay: Helping Kids Cope

She is an educator, activist, and entrepreneur and was empowered to publish her first children’s book, If Tomorrow Comes and I Am Gone. She was inspired to write a book that would help families and children, who are or have been battling cancer, understand, adjust, and cope with the diagnosis. The voice of the story’s main character, McKenzie, came to Trent after her own personal breast cancer scare. “Though young and impressionable, children are extremely resilient,” says Trent. “They are able to deconstruct some of the most complex issues, including cancer, and formulate ideas around those issues. However, as adults, we must provide them with the tools to do so.” For Trent, Tomorrow is one of those tools that will help parents and children adjust to and live with the disease. While cancer is a prominent theme of the book, Tomorrow can be used as a resource for families and children who are facing illness of any kind. Trent hopes that readers will be inspired, encouraged, and most importantly uplifted by the messages of family unity, love, and courage that Tomorrow provides. Growing up in a single parent household, Torri faced many adversities adding tremendous devastation to her life emphasizing the fact she needed her father. In 2003, Torri J. Evans decided to follow her heart to restore her family, which meant going in search of the father she had never known. At the end of her search she found her father along with eleven brothers and sisters and seventy-six nieces and nephews. This created an incredible burden within Torri J. Evans. This burden burning on the inside of Torri J. Evans caused her to realize there were others who are growing up fatherless just like her who desire reconciliation with their absent father. Her desire has now turned into a full time mission of “healing the broken places the fatherless experience has created” through her nonprofit, The Fatherless Generation Foundation Inc. Launched in 2009, TFGF is a non-profit organization based in Atlanta, Georgia reuniting fathers and their children by providing the resources and services that strengthen, support, and sustain the commitment to fatherhood and family values. Their services include Husband & Wife Team Mentor Teams, Emergency Financial Assistance, Peer Groups hosted in The Boys & Girls Club of Atlanta, Tutoring, but at the helm of the organization is the mediation process taking place reuniting biological fathers back into the lives of their children! Since TFGF’s conception they have assisted 1300 children through their Peer Groups, mentored 167 fatherless children, and reunited 37 fathers.
