Olav Rokne from the Hugo Book Club joins for this episode on The New Mutants, the final Fox X-Men film. The film, which comes straight from the mind of the director of The Fault in our Stars and one of the writers of Jackass, turns out to be a really tepid last gasp of this franchise with a healthy dose of anti-Indigenous prejudice. The movie literally starts with "there are two bears inside you." From this awful film we have a great discussion on its distinctions from the source material, identity, class, race, and the economics of superhero films.

59 - The Tax Collector: Ride or Die Till The Wheels Fall Off

Love. Honour. Loyalty. Family.

These are the central tenets of David, played by Bobby Soto, and also the didactic opening titles of David Ayer's latest film, The Tax Collector. David and Creeper, played by the magnificent Shia LaBeouf, are tax collectors: middle managers for The Wizard who collect tithes from over forty street gangs in L.A.. When the balance of power in the city shifts, David must make hard choices and question his loyalities in the face of overwhelming odds.

With a 22 Metascore and a seemingly "toxic" filmmaker at the helm, much of the criticism of this film comes from its depiction of Latinx characters and women. Are those critiques warranted? Do those simple good/bad representational critiques driving film criticism mean anything materially, or reflect how mainstream audiences view the film? And finally, is this movie good? I would say yes.

This adaptation of the 2003 DC Comics Elseworlds story is an ideologically-poisoned work and Kino Lefter is the cure.

From Mark Millar, the Michael Bay of comics, and the political scientists at Warner Bros. Animation comes a "revamped" telling of this classic Superman tale that ruins much of what made the original an interesting work.

What if Superman landed in Soviet Ukraine and became a hero of the working class? A neat idea that this adaptation fails to capitalize on. Communism is when things are bad, capitalism = freedom, technocracy rules, and anyone who believes in justice is a fool. We had things to say.
