What ensued was nothing short of miraculous. Ultimately though, the bread that was provided that day really pointed to Christ, the Bread of Life.

King and Kingdom: Parable of The Dragnet

In the Parable of the Net, our Lord Jesus Christ describes the coming judgment in somewhat terrifying detail. In this particular parable, the kind of net He described was not a casting net, but one that was typically nearly a mile long and anchored to a boat, capturing everything in its path. Once the net was reeled in, all the contents of the net were then sorted good from bad. On the day of judgment all people will similarly be sorted and one's righteousness will be based on nothing else other than whether one is in Christ or not.

Summary:

The Parable of the Weeds is similar in some ways to the Parable of the Sower. Both have a sower, seed, wheat, a harvest, and both are explained by Jesus. However, the Parable of the Weeds brings us face to face with the return of King Jesus and his judgement. If we have ears to hear, we can understand that the judgement of God is part of the good news of the gospel, and can lead us down a road that helps us comprehend the mercy, patience and love of God in Christ.

In the Parable of the Sower, Jesus compares various responses to the gospel (or the message of his kingdom) to various soils as environments for the growth of seeds. The “path” represents the “hard heart”, the “rocky soil” represents the “shallow heart, and the “thorn-infested soil” represents the “self-indulgent heart”. However, the “good soil” represents the heart that receives the word of God immediately, deeply, and exclusively, and reaps a fruitful harvest, which represents the evidence of a life of faith.

How can you ensure that when you hear the Word of the Kingdom, it doesn't just remain on the surface of your heart but penetrates deep within?

Identify areas in your life where worldly concerns and the pursuit of riches may be choking the Word. How can you prioritize the Word over these distractions?

Stories are not just for bedtime or for the television screen. Jesus used storytelling to communicate what his Kingdom is all about. And in Matthew 13, Jesus uses a specific type of story to do this: a parable—a practical story, often framed as a simile, that illustrates a spiritual truth. In order to understand Jesus’ parables we must listen from the original hearer’s perspective, look for the main point, and let the truth change our perception.

What is the responsibility of believers who have been given an understanding of the secrets of the kingdom? How should we respond to this knowledge?

The three gifts points to who Jesus is, with gold representing Jesus' divine nature and grace, frankincense highlighting his sympathetic and perpetual priesthood, and myrrh foretelling his sorrows and triumphant salvation. In the end, what is the hidden gift of Christmas? We are. Giving oneself to God mirrors God’s gift of Christ, embodying the hidden and transformative power of the Advent season.

In Matthew 12:38-50, a central theme emerges: prioritizing a relationship with Jesus over all others, even family ties. The narrative builds towards a crucial decision—putting Christ first. The passage challenges the perception of the "holy family" (Mary and Jesus' brothers), revealing them as outsiders initially. While outside, they express confusion and concern. However, this changes over time. We also see that familial bonds are secondary to the unity of Spirit through faith in Christ. Jesus proclaims that those doing God's will become part of his family. The emphasis is on disciplined action, aligning with God's desires, and putting Jesus first.

In Matthew 11:25-30, we see God’s sovereignty and human responsibility on a collision course. And somehow, in that tension, there is rest to be found in Christ. There are three main realities we discover in this passage: (1) pride is the greatest obstacle in having a relationship with God, (2) He who knows not the Son, knows not God, and (3) he who has the Son has rest.

Questions:

1) C.S. Lewis wrote “Humility is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less”. How might thinking of humility in this way, help us combat pride?

2) Has God ever felt distant? How can knowing Jesus help in this circumstance?

3) In what have you attempted to find rest in the past, and how have these failed? Can you repurpose these energies and desires for the work, and subsequent rest, that God has called you to?

In Matthew 11:1-11, we are reintroduced to John the Baptist who has been imprisoned while Jesus’ministry is flourishing. While imprisoned, John has some doubts about Jesus being the Messiah. His doubts rise from some of the same sources that doubt grows from in our lives; namely, difficult situations, unmet expectations, and limited perception. Jesus’ antidote for John’s doubt is the same for ours: God’s Word, and what Christ has done. While John could only look at the miracles Christ had done, we can look upon the cross, where Christ bore our sin and shame.

1. How has doubt been a struggle in your own relationship with God? What truths from God's Word were the most difficult to believe in the midst of your doubts?

2. How can difficulties, disappointments, and suffering feed into our doubts?

3. Why is it futile to fight doubt apart from the foundation of God's Word?

There is a popular perception of a comfortable and easygoing Jesus, but Jesus' teachings were often focused on hardship and suffering. In Matthew 10, Jesus commissions His apostles a mission to take the gospel to the lost sheep of Israel, emphasizing the impending suffering and persecution they would face. While their mission had specific characteristics and demands, there are six principles for the gospel mission we are called to: (1) compassion, (2) reaching the least, (3) dependence on giving, (4) commendable character, (5) proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and (6) recognizing the dangerous, yet rewarding nature of the mission. The ultimate motivation for enduring these hardships is the promise of finding true life by surrendering to Christ.

Questions:

1) What mission situations tend to be the most difficult for you? Jesus speaks of being like sheep, snakes, and doves in Matthew 10. How would this apply to your current context?

2) What aspects of being like Christ cause you the most fear and anxiety? What promises in God's Word might bolster your security and joy?

3) What aspects of God's character in Matthew 10 ground our confidence in Christ's mission?

In Matthew 9:35 to 10:4, we see that the kind of risk-taking discipleship that Scripture calls for will not be a reality in our lives until we see the lost as Jesus sees them. At the end of chapter 9, Matthew closes out a section of Jesus’ miracle stories and teach on discipleship by pointing to Jesus’ compassion for those who needed Him. The motive for our mission is compassion. And the means of our mission is prayer and people, but in the end we put our trust in the “Lord of the Harvest” to do what He can only do: save.

Questions:

How can you embody the compassion of Christ in your everyday interactions with others? What practical steps can you take to show kindness and empathy to those you encounter?

Do the massive spiritual needs of the world compel you to action or make you feel helpless? How might Jesus’ call to pray in 9:38 impact your reaction?

Consider the concept of "laborers" in the harvest. In what unexpected places or among unexpected people might God be calling you to share His love and message?

Their miraculous healing spreads awe throughout the region. However, not everyone rejoices; the Pharisees attribute Jesus's work to demonic forces, revealing their spiritual blindness. Jesus emphasizes that His miracles are a manifestation of God's kingdom and invites us to see with spiritual eyes. This passage illustrates the power of faith, the compassion of Christ, and the ongoing battle between belief and skepticism. It reminds us that true sight comes through faith in Jesus, the Son of David, our Savior.

In Matthew 8 and 9 we’ve been getting a picture of Jesus’ authority. And in 9:18-26, the picture we get is even better. Not only does Jesus have the authority to save, and to give us hope in the middle of despair, but also Jesus has authority over death. Specifically, in the death of Christ is the death of our spiritual death (we will be forgiven our sin), and in the resurrection of Christ is the death of our physical death (we will rise again bodily). Since Christ died and rose again, we who are united to him, though we may die, will also rise again to a better life.

1) How does these two miracle stories speak to how Jesus gives us hope in the middle of despair?

2) Reflect on this famous quote by Canadian scientist G. B. Hardy: “When I looked at religion, I said, I have two questions. One, has anybody ever conquered death, and two, if they have, did they make a way for me to conquer death? I checked the tomb of Buddha, and it was occupied, and I checked the tomb of Confucius and it was occupied, and I checked the tomb of Mohammed and it was occupied, and I came to the tomb of Jesus and it was empty. And I said, There is one who conquered death. And I asked the second question, Did he make a way for me to do it? And I opened the Bible and discovered that He said, Because I live, ye shall live also.”

Matthew 8 and 9 are packed with miracle stories. In Matthew 9:9-13, Matthew includes the account of his own calling by Jesus in all of one verse (v. 9). Is this story placed in the narrative amongst the miracles because of mere chronology, or is there something of the miraculous here? Through the sovereign calling of Jesus, salvation comes to Matthew and, sometimes unbeknownst to us, we are presented with yet another miracle and a fantastic summary of our Lord’s mission on earth: Jesus came to call sinners (v. 13).

What challenges do you face in your belief in the forgiveness of sins, as stated in the Apostles’ Creed?

Did you pursue God, or did God pursue you? Look back into your life for examples of Christ’s calling in your life and give thanks to Him.

How might Jesus' calling of Matthew give us hope for unbelievers we know who seem unreachable with the gospel?

While at first they seem different, the two stories are really both exorcisms of evil, as Jesus reveals his identity as the victorious Son of God. The smaller victories of Matthew 8 point us forward to the ultimate victory of Christ upon the cross.

The “Sermon on the Move” is attracting attention and crowds are beginning to follow Jesus. In Matthew 8:18-27, we see Jesus is looking more for followers than fans. We are given a glimpse into how not to follow Jesus. If we are convinced we must follow Jesus, we must do it without pride (humbly come to him and serve him as Lord), without compromise (he is first; everyone and everything else is a far second), and without fear (courageously trust him).

How would you counsel someone who wanted to follow Jesus as long as they could maintain their current lifestyle?

Explain how Matthew 8 (specifically the scribe and the man that approach Jesus) speaks against the prosperity gospel.

Find areas of “excessive fear” in your life. Confess these, and ask for a courageous faith to combat this.

Three portraits are presented of Jesus and his power to the powerless, as he heals a leper, a Gentile’s slave, and a Jewish woman. The healings are miraculous, but we are drawn into these portraits to see a bigger picture. Jesus' work upon the cross unleashes a powerful gospel that brings sinful outsiders into the kingdom.

1. Jesus heals three unlikely characters in Matthew 8. How might this impact those with whom you seek to share the gospel?

2. How does the account of the leper and the centurion highlight the centrality of faith in our response to Jesus?

Jesus concludes the Sermon on the Mount with two pictures. The first, is that of many people making a profession of faith before Christ, only to hear Jesus say, “I never knew you”. The second, is that of a wise man who builds his house upon the rock and a foolish man who builds his house upon sand. Both of these images tell us that Jesus wants us to walk away from his sermon examining our lives and hungering for a deep obedience that goes beyond mere lip service and the external trappings of a stylized Christian life.

What does “casual and comfortable Christianity” look like, and how does that compare to how Jesus calls his followers to live?

In what areas of your life (finance, work, family, recreation, etc.) would you say that you were more “amazed” at Jesus’s teachings instead of obedient to them? What can you change to be obedient in those areas?

Go back and read the Sermon on the Mount in one sitting. Every time you hear something that convicts you, stop and briefly pray about it.

In Matthew 7:13-14, we come to the beginning of the end of the Sermon on the Mount. Is Jesus looking for applause at the end of his sermon? No. He’s looking for his hearers to make a choice: the wide way which is easy and travelled by many, or the narrow way which is hard and found by few. Paradoxically, the wide way leads to confinement, and eventually death, while the narrow way leads to an expansive freedom, and ultimately life.

What are some expressions of the mountain analogy (many roads, one destination) you have seen in popular culture?

What stands or has stood between you and Jesus? What are some practical things you can do to part with this “luggage”?

Read Psalm 73. How does the psalmist’s realization help us choose the narrow path when it is the more difficult one?

He also goes on to teach that to love others as we love ourselves might mean something altogether different than what we are accustomed to thinking.

1. Acknowledging that we are truly His children, and that we have been living in obedience, have we been asking, seeking, and knocking for what is on our hearts?

2. How can we glorify God in our vocation, our educational pursuits, our business, etc.?

In Matthew 6:19-24 Jesus deals with the subject of our priorities, or in other words, what we treasure. He does so by addressing the heart (vv. 19-21), the soul (vv. 22-23), and the will (v. 24). Our Lord wants us to have the right treasure, the right devotion, and the right master. It is possible, and even a temptation, to have the wrong treasure, to be devoted to the wrong thing, and to serve the wrong master. What we have here are the priorities that the Lord’s Prayer leads us too.

The sixth and final petition of the Lord’s Prayer transitions us from the fifth petition about forgiveness for sins in the past to the vulnerability to sins beyond today and into tomorrow. Acknowledging that temptation is necessary for our spiritual growth, we must pray that God will keep us from temptations that would destroy us. We must empty ourselves of all spiritual hubris and pride. We must also pray acknowledging that victory over Satan can come only through God's power as we truly depend on him. Being willing and able to authentically pray, "Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one" is a key to spiritual health.

Can you think of a test or trial that has nurtured your spiritual growth? How might this affect how you pray about temptation going forward?

Do you view yourself as impervious to certain temptations? What spiritual unhealth might this reveal in your life?

Which faulty approach to evil do you tend toward: (1) head in the sand (2) perspective dominated by evil (3) self-righteously attacking evil. How can praying the sixth petition help you guard against this?

The fifth petition in the Lord's Prayer brings us to forgiveness. It is an explicit prayer for forgiveness ("Forgive us our debts"), and it is also an implicit prayer for a forgiving spirit ("as we also have forgiven our debtors"). Praying this helps us to monitor our own spiritual health. Are we healthy, forgiving people? Also, we are continually reminded that we are "debtors", whose debt was paid by Christ. And we are invited to have a fresh understanding and experience of his grace and forgiveness every day.

The first three petitions of the Lord’s Prayer lift our gaze upward to the glory of God. The fourth petition, “Give us this day our daily bread”, bring us inward to our physical needs. Our Father in heaven wants us to know that provision comes from his hand and wants us to pray specifically for it. This petition also stretches us outward, as implicit within it is a commitment to be used by God to be answer of this prayer for others. We are also ask for trust that God will provide for us tomorrow and we are given Jesus himself, the “bread of tomorrow”.

In order to pray the Lord's Prayer effectively we have to put His kingdom and will ahead of ours. When we think about the kingdom, we recognize that it had started with 120 followers at the time of the ascension of our Lord. Today, we can see that the kingdom has grown exponentially as the Lord said it would. When we think about His will, we recognize that to obey His commands and precepts is to properly submit to His will. Ultimately the greatest example of adherence to the Father's will is that of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Although we live in a world that idolizes self, the first petition of the Lord’s Prayer (hallowed be Your name) reorients us toward the ultimate purpose of the universe: to glorify God. While the fact that God is our Father is the foundational awareness of our prayers, the hallowing of God’s name is the foundational petition of our prayers. God’s name cannot be separated from his character and his character is that of a perfect Father. To hallow his name is to (1) take great care with how we use God’s name, (2) revere him with private and public worship, (3) ensure our beliefs about him are worthy of him, and (4) live a life that displays that he is our Father.

The Lord’s Prayer is the greatest prayer the church has. It is important for us not to just “say” the Lord’s Prayer, but to actually pray it. To understand the depth of its meaning and how it gives us a lens through which we can look at everything. Jesus begins with the declaration that God is “our Father in heaven”. Three words give us a window into who God is and who we are in Christ. (1) “our”: we are not rogue individuals, but rather part of the family of God, with brothers and sisters in Christ to whom we have a responsibility. (2) “Father”: God is our Abba (Dear Father) who is near to us, loves us, and who we can approach with confidence. (3)”heaven”: while we are free to engage with God intimately, we do so always with honor, reverence, awe, wonder, and respect, as he is the transcendent, perfect and holy King.

When we put our trust in Christ as our Savior and Lord, his righteousness that we receive is the ground, or root, of our salvation. This leads to an expressive righteousness in how we live, which is the fruit of our salvation. In Matthew chapter 5, Jesus has explained how that righteousness is expressed in the life of the citizens of the Kingdom in relation to anger, lust, marriage, oaths, retaliation, and love. In Matthew chapter 6, Jesus warns his followers not to veer into hypocrisy as they strive to express this righteousness in three spiritual disciplines: giving, praying, and fasting.
