Mike recently caught up with Arnold Schwartzman, RDI, for a brief follow-up to the original RDInsight recording from 2006. Arnold’s career began in the 1960s and spans television and editorial work, photography, branding, book design, and filmmaking, during which he won an Oscar for his documentary Genocide. And in later years, he became something of a favourite on the cruise circuit, giving talks on all manner of creative subjects. Now at 90, Arnold is still working away on new projects.

Ivan Chermayeff

Mike Dempsey is in conversation with the legendary graphic designer Ivan Chermayeff, Honorary RDI (1932 - 2017). Born in Britain, the son of the notable Russian architect Serge Chermayeff, Ivan made his career in the United States, creating many iconic logos, visual identities and design projects around the world. His legacy lies not just in the well-known logos and visual identities we see every day, but in the idea of design as “clear thinking made visible”, elegant, functional, and enriched with intelligence and joy. Teucer Wilson

Mike Dempsey RDI is joined by Teucer Wilson, one of the UK’s leading stone carvers and letter cutters. After studying stonemasonry and carving at Weymouth College, Teucer completed a five-year apprenticeship with the distinguished stone cutter Richard Kindersley, cutting tens of thousands of letters and immersing himself in a tradition tracing back through David Kindersley. Since establishing his Norfolk workshop in 2000, he has created memorials, public artworks, sculptures, and commissions for hospitals, gardens, and civic spaces. His work combines the rigour of craft with a deep sensitivity to form, texture, and material, always mindful of how stone holds memory and meaning.

Graphic designer Ian Cartlidge, co-founder of Cartlidge Levene, one of the UK’s most admired graphic design studios. Ian began his career at Conran Associates before moving on to work on the Habitat catalogue, a formative time that laid the groundwork for what came next. 1987, he teamed up with Adam Levene to establish their own practice. Cartlidge Levene has since built a reputation for thoughtful, award-winning wayfinding and signage, working with clients such as Tate Modern, The Design Museum, the Barbican, V&A Dundee, the Royal College of Art, Selfridges, and The Guardian.

Their work in the cultural sector has helped shape how millions of visitors navigate and experience some of the most iconic institutions in the world.

Perry King

Perry King RDI moved to Italy in 1964 as a consultant to Olivetti, where he worked on a wide range of products, including the classic Valentine Typewriter and the Sistema 45. He later teamed up with the Spanish designer Santiago Miranda, and in 1976, they formed the King Miranda Associati, always working closely together on the many diverse projects they undertook.

David Pearson

Mike is in conversation with the graphic designer David Pearson RDI, who inhabits the highly competitive world of book cover design; he is a self-confessed Typophile, naming his company 'Type As Image' where typography is king. Ironically, one of David's most renowned covers was for George Orwell's 1984, which had all front cover types redacted as a powerful representation of that dystopian tale. When not designing, you'll find him teaching or talking to hungry young students here and abroad. In addition to his RDI mantle, he is a member of the prestigious Alliance Graphic International.

For many, the work of Sir Kenneth Grange RDI would have touched their lives at some point; think the classic TX1 taxi, the ease of taking a photo with a Kodak Instomatic, whipping up a storm in the kitchen with a Kenwood Chef or nodding off while travelling on the sleek lines of the intercity 125, or posting a letter in one of Kenneth's postboxes or writing that masterpiece under the light of the anglepoise adjustable lamp or popping a coin in the very first parking meter or keeping dry while waiting for under a bus shelter all and much more were designed by Kenneth Grange and much more over the past six decades all featured in the recently published book 'Designing the Modern World' Thames & Hudson.

Fernando Gutiérrez

Mike Dempsey RDI interviews graphic designer Fernando Gutiérrez RDI. Gutiérrez's career began in 1986 at CDT Design in London. In 1992, he relocated to Spain and joined Sumer in Barcelona. After briefly returning to London, he formed Studio Graphica in Barcelona with fellow designer Pablo Martin. In 2000, Gutiérrez moved back to the UK as a Pentagram Partner, where he worked for six years. In 2006, he established Studio Fernando Gutiérrez.

Born in London in the 1960s to Spanish parents, Gutiérrez displayed artistic talent from a young age, often drawing and painting on the walls of his room. Despite being initially directed towards a trade job with the London Electricity Board, his art teacher recognized his potential and steered him towards a different path. Gutiérrez’s unique upbringing contributes to his identity as a genuinely European designer, with a unique way of choosing projects and the clients he works with.

We return to one of the earliest RDInsight recordings, with the illustrator and writer Sara Fanelli Hon RDI, recorded in 2006.

Mike Dempsey RDI caught up with Sara recently. She has devoted a great deal of her time to homeschooling her daughter Flora but has also ventured into the world of architecture with commissions from Thomas Heatherwick, for whom she created illustrations of science, art, and literature embossed into the concrete walls of the new Learning Hub at the Nanyang Technological University. For Ab Rogers, she produced illustrations of butterflies to stencil into terracotta along with hand-painted designs decorating the windows of The Royal Marsden Maggie's Centre. And after a decade, she is planning a new book, her first since 'The Onion's Great Escape'.

This recording from the RDI Sound Archive with Royal Designer David Gentleman was made in 2010 during his 80th year.

Since then, he has had three new books published, three exhibitions of his work and in 2022, Royal Mail issued a set of six stamps commemorating his work.

Now, at 93, you will still find him around London or in Suffolk with pen and watercolours capturing the world around him. Speaking recently, interviewer Mike Dempsey RDI, learned that David was hunkered down working on a new book with a looming deadline to meet.

Margaret Howell

In 2020 Margaret Howell RDI celebrated her five decades in the world of fashion design. Throughout those years, Margaret has kept to her abiding principles of creating elegant, classic and understated fashion through her love of tweeds, corduroys, linen, wool and cotton, all carefully selected to develop her sense of Englishness with her passion for muted natural colours and patterns.

Mike Dempsey RDI recorded this conversation in 2007 in a rather busy and, at times, a little noisy space. Today Margaret has 94 stores across Japan, where her work is much loved.

And her enduring championing of mid-20th-century industrial design has seen her collaborate with products from Ercol furniture and Anglepoise with her special editions of the classic Type 75 range of lamps.

Derek Birdsall

In 2018 Mike Dempsey, RDI, interviewed one of the titans of British graphic design and typography, Derek Birdsall RDI.

A few years before that conversation, Derek walked into his Islington studio at the back of his house, where he was about to start work on a new book commissioned by a regular client. Looking down for some time at the manuscript and the accompanying pile of photographs on his Desk, Derek suddenly decided he’d had enough of solving other people's problems, something he'd been doing for six decades. And without a party or farewell wishes, he sold his house and studio and moved to the Kent coast within sight and sound of the sea, where he has remained happily ever since. But Derek's influence on graphics and typography still spreads far and wide. And his story is a fascinating one.

Peter Brookes

Nine years after this 2008 interview with The Times, political cartoonist Peter Brookes RDI was awarded a CBE in the 2017 New Year's Honours List. Gone is his original tiny triangular Times office with the smallest window imaginable and its view of a red brick wall, to a desk boasting a magnificent view of London's skyline with the Shard centre stage. From this vantage point, Peter will produce his daily creation with acerbic wit, making the paper's readers laugh out loud or be infuriated in equal measure. As Mike Dempsey RDI discovered, the RAF's loss of Brookes was the creative world's gain.

Alison Brooks

Canadian-born Alison Brooks RDI is one of Britain's most highly acclaimed architects. She moved to London in 1988 and founded her practice in 1996. She has produced a range of seminal works, from urban design and housing to major arts and higher education buildings; to temporary pavilions and private houses. She is the only architect to have won all three of the UK's most prestigious architectural awards: the RIBA Stirling Prize, the Manser (twice) Medal and the Stephen Lawrence Prize. Roger Law RDI was one half of Luck and Flaw (with Peter Fluck), together creators of the classic 80s TV satire show ‘Spitting Image'. In the early noughties Roger lived in Australia creating large ceramic works and supervised their making in China. He eventually returned to the UK, and in 2020 he was back in the world of television as executive producer of a new series of ‘Spitting Image’, streamed on Britbox, with UK, US and German editions. This month sees a West End stage production of the show. Mike Dempsey RDI, recorded this interview with Roger for RDInsights in 2009.

Margaret Calvert

Margaret Calvert RDI OBE is best known for her groundbreaking work with Jock Kinneir on the design of Britain’s road and motorway signing system introduced in 1965. She was also Head of Graphics at the Royal College of Art in London where she encouraged the rigour to design that she believes in. Still today you'll find her in her North London studio working on her lifelong passion for letterforms.
