Todd A. Dos Reis, ASC is a third generation Cape Verdean-American who grew up in a housing project of New Bedford, Massachusetts. Raised by a single mother, he loved going to the local theater. From Disney films to Bruce Lee films to the Blaxploitation Genre of the 70's, Todd escaped to the cinema to fill his imagination.

When not at the movies, Todd could be found at the basketball courts around the city, where he honed his skills to become one of the city's top point guards. When he got to high school, he split his time between the gym and his love of photography and film production where he took every photography class and ran the high school TV studio. When it was time for college, he chose to study cinematography at the University of Southern California.

After graduating with a degree in Cinema-TV Production from USC, an internship at a production company led to a PA job, leading to working as a camera loader and eventually to a 2nd AC position on a feature film. While climbing the camera department and union ladders, Todd was constantly shooting music videos, spec commercials, documentaries and short films.

Working as a Camera Operator, Todd landed his first big break on the pilot ENTOURAGE for HBO. He handheld the 35mm film camera until they moved him up to become their full-time Director of Photography.

Todd has shot critically acclaimed shows like the Peabody Award Winner DAVID MAKES MAN. "Tarrell Alvin McCraney's visually stunning coming-of age drama contemplates identity as fluid, plural, restrictive, and powerful, immersing viewers in the heart- wrenching world of a gifted 14-year-old African American boy growing up in the Miami projects". Other notable series he has shot include COUNCIL OF DADS, LONGMIRE and CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND.

Natalie Jean is a Haitian singer/songwriter that specializes in Americana music. She can sing in English, French, Spanish and Creole. Natalie Jean has been nominated for and won many awards for her music including 6 nominations at the 2021 Josie Music Awards, in which she won “World Artist of The Year” and “Versatile Artist of The Year”. She has also won two gold medals at the Global Music Awards. Natalie is now a voting member in the Recording Academy, the organization that hosts the Grammys each year.

Natalie does not follow any guidelines or rules when she writes her music. She utilizes a vast array of genres when writing, trying to break down the barriers that usually constrict Americana musicians. She stays true to herself writing and singing from her heart and soul, trying to create music that makes a difference, music that people can take to heart and feel connected to.

Some of Natalie Jean’s biggest musical influences are Elvis Presley, Lena Horne, Ella Fitzgerald, Celine Dion, Billie Holiday and Nina Simone.

Natalie released her first of six albums in 2013, a jazz/pop album titled Obsession, and her latest album was released in February 2020 titled, Where Do We Go From Here? Which features the emotional track “I Am.” Natalie Jean’s voice is paired beautifully with a wonderful guitar melody. She delivers a very passionate ballad that provides listeners with a vulnerable look into her life. It is a perfect example of Jean’s songwriting abilities and shows why she has been nominated for so many awards in her career and why she has won so many of those awards.

The first Indian-born jazz composer to premiere work at Carnegie Hall, Charu has been playing the piano since the age of five, and performing since the age of nine. She won an international piano competition at the age of 15.

Her recently-released "Book of Ragas vol. 2" is a completely original sound in jazz, and continues her work done in the first volume. In this new album, which was highlighted by Jazz at Lincoln Center as an August new release, Suri uses her native Carnatic and Hindustani ragas (modal scales) as the basis for jazz piano improvisations, layered by Sufi singing. Her more classic album, "The New American Songbook" has garnered many awards, including a "Band Single of the Year" crystal trophy for her song, Bluesy, awarded by the International Singer-Songwriters Association (ISSA) in 2021.

She was also awarded a gold "Jazz Artist of the Month" record by ISSA. Suri was recommended to join the Recording Academy (GRAMMYs) in 2021.

The trio consists of Charu Suri on the piano, Justin Lee on the double bass, Jay O’Brien and Jesse Gerbasi on the drums, and the vocal talents of Sufi singer Umer Piracha (Falsa) and Songbook vocalist Danielle Erin Rhodes.

During the pandemic, she composed the "Book of Ragas vol. 2" that taps into the beauty of morning ragas, as well as several Songbook singles including "A Little Joy" and "Keep Dreaming."

She has started live gigs and completed tours recently in Miami, and is planning a big multi-city tour in India in 2022.

CVRC SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE reaches $50,000 goal.

The Cape Verdean Recognition Scholarship Committee is celebrating its 17th year of the accomplishments of 32 outstanding scholars from the Greater New Bedford area, and will be awarding over $50,000. Due to the pandemic, the ceremony will be held at the New Bedford High School Parking Lot on June 26, 2021. The committee applauds the graduates for being determined to proudly graduate under very stressful conditions. We wish them much success, and hope that they will return and make a difference in our city someday.

The committee has awarded over $495,000 to 453 recipients in the past 16 years. Our milestone was to reach $50,000 this year and we have succeeded in accomplishing this goal. In its 17th year of raising funds, the Cape Verdean Recognition Scholarship Committee has assisted young adults to attend universities and colleges such as UMASS Dartmouth, Bristol Community College, Boston University, Bridgewater State University, Howard University, Berklee College of Music, and Northeastern University to name a few.

As in the past, the success of the efforts of this committee has largely been due to the contributions of their sponsors, organizations, businesses and individuals who have gone out of their way to give financial support to this important endeavor. Every year the money raised has been donated to the cause of increasing awareness, and the importance of educations and leadership for our young adults.

The scholarships are open to all graduating seniors from the Greater New Bedford area regardless of race, color or creed. The scholarships are awarded on the basis of financial need, scholastic standing, extracurricular civic activities, letters of recommendation and leadership skills.

The committee has a 501©3 status, and all contributions are tax deductible. The committee hopes for continued support in order that we can continue to assist our promising graduates.

During Mike’s time with the Hilltoppers, Durfee lost just eight times in 104 games with him leading the way to consecutive state titles in 1988 and 1989. As a sophomore, Herren set the single-season mark for points scored (533), breaking Ernie Fleming’s mark of 475 set during the 1966-67 season. In that same season, he also led the team in scoring (22.2 ppg.), rebounds (212), assists (130) and steals (62). Herren also scored a school-record 51 points in three quarters in a 107-64 win at Somerset, eclipsing the school total of 50 set by Fleming and Manny Papoula. He graduated as the Hilltoppers’ highest scorer in school history with 1,967 points and sat out three games his senior season, missing out on the chance to become the school’s first 2,000-point scorer. Herren was named Gatorade New England and Massachusetts Player of the Year in 1988 and 1989 and earned a scholarship to play at Boston College.

Since riding in a bike-a-thon at 8 years old to his current status of unofficial “Mayor of Cape Cod”, Jonathan Thompson has been a force in his community. From performing in a local R&B group as a teen to creating the popular social media show “JT Chronicles”, he has captured the hearts of Cape Cod residents and beyond.

In the early 90’s, after his performing career came to an end, Thompson decided to begin a new chapter and teamed up with lifelong friend, Tim Lus (who he met on that bike-a-thon ride as a kid) as well as others and began a journey which has provided entertainment in several forms to the community that he loves for over 25 years. Under the name Incognito Entertainment which was later changed to Ayboi Entertainment, the group produced hundreds of events including dances, concerts, tournaments and parties. Thompson and Lus created “The Real…” a local video show which included interviews and performances by major recording artists and other types of performers. “The Real…” brand was later expanded to include a radio show (The Real… Radio) and used a format similar to the video show.

Over the next several years, JT continued to be involved in the production and promotion of events and services of all types including concerts, youth dances, theme parties, fundraisers, youth career days, tournaments, blood drives, event hosting and more.

Two years ago, on the heels of his growing popularity and infectious personality, Thompson posted a video documenting an inconveniencing knee injury, the day of doctor’s visits and the comedy of errors that followed. The single video created a refreshing take on his everyday life and JT’s Chronicles was born. In the ensuing months he began creating a phenomenon that has grown to over 30,000 followers across multiple social media platforms. The daily series of video blogs include the “Morning Bus Ride with Bob”, many cameo appearances from members of the community (as well as an occasional celebrity), trivia, raffles and an overall message of positivity, usually with a twist of humor. Thompson opens almost every video entry with a “Good morning…. you are watching the Chronicles” and ends with an “I Love you”.

He is now known as the go-to guy when the community needs a leader at a vigil or an MC for an event. When there are plans to hold a fundraiser, it’s JT they always want (and need) involved. Recently, facing stiff competition and a 3 month long voting process he was named “Mayor of cape Cod” at the Art Westfall Foundation’s Bartenders Ball.

Whether it is a word of encouragement, a rally for prayers and support for local families experiencing hard times, promotion of local businesses or just to make his followers laugh, JT Chronicles is a uniquely crafted outlet by a man who has his finger on the pulse of the people. Hannah was only 11 months old when her parents rushed her to the ER very late one night, unsure of what was wrong with their daughter. It was then and there that she was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and their fear and confusion instantly turned to shock and disbelief. With their lives turned upside down, they struggled with the new reality of learning how to keep their toddler daughter alive. What they didn’t realize at the time was that Hannah had the tenacity and strength that would cause her to strive, not just survive.

As she grew from infancy to childhood, Hannah displayed a determination to do whatever she set her heart and mind to do, and typically no one was going to tell her otherwise. Hannah’s father often told her she would be a “CEO” or “entrepreneur” some day, as long as she, as he put it, used her powers for good.

On New Year’s Eve day 2016, as the family was traveling to Hannah’s favorite health and beauty store, her father turned to her and gave her a challenge. He said that he bet she could make the same products she wanted to buy in the store and even sell them herself. Challenge accepted!

That same day Hannah was researching the necessary ingredients and later that week she was making her first bath bombs (her favorite health and beauty product). Within a few weeks her products were selling in a local gift shop, and to date they are sold online and in retail outlets . She has donated over $5000 to various charities, and has committed to donate 20% of all web sales to JDRF.

Hannah calls her brand, BeYOUtifulbecause she believes that being beautiful means being yourself, no matter what challenges you endure. At just 13 years old Hannah is proving that she can do all that she sets her mind to do, and nothing, not even T1D, can stop her.

Born and raised in New Bedford, Massachusetts, “Candida Rose” Baptista is a 2nd generation American-born Cape Verdean. She is a vocalist, song-writer, entertainer, music and cultural educator, as well as a mother and grandmother.

Her 10-song debut CD entitled “KabuMerikana: The Sum of Me”, combines her Cape Verdean musical roots with her American (primarily jazz) influences, a mixture she calls “KabuJazz”. She is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth where she graduated “Summa Cum Laude” with a Bachelor of Arts – Music Degree, specializing in African-American/World music performance, with a minor in African-American Studies.

In addition, she recently graduated from UMASS Boston with a Masters of Science Degree in Transnational, Cultural, and Community Studies (now known as Critical Ethnic and Community Studies). As a working performer, in addition to her work with various jazz, R&B, and Cape Verdean musical groups, through her company Golden Rose Music, Candida spends her days traveling the SouthCoast region of Massachusetts and Rhode Island as a Life Enrichment Entertainer singing for Nursing Home, Assisted Living and Adult Day Care facilities, as well as for various senior groups and associations. A 2005 graduate of Temple University, Lynsey Grace returns as an assistant coach for the 2008 season. Grace spent last season as the assistant softball coach at New Bedford High School, where she primarily instructed the hitters and outfielders. In 2006, Grace was a member of the Philadelphia Force professional softball team and in 2005 was drafted by the Harlem Diamonds professional team. A four-year member of the Owl Softball team, Grace was a two-time Atlantic 10 All-Conference selection (2002, 2004) and was named to the 2002 A-10 All-Tournament Team. A multiple A-10 Player Of The Week honoree, Grace was also twice voted to the North Carolina All-Tournament Team. Grace is currently ranked second on the all time career home run list with 13.
