Episode 123 - Music : Response

Once again we venture into a mix of lovely old house music.

I tend to do a little bit of planning ahead when it comes to making these episodes. I like to have some kind of a theme or direction in place before I make a start. For this episode however it was a case of "sod it, let's just bung together a bunch of tunes that I like". And that's exactly what we have here.

A good few big names on this episode. A favourite of mine is the Futureshock remix of "Music : Response" by The Chemical Brothers.

Episode 122 - As We Step

Join us as we step into another bout of house music.

Fun little story about the opening track “Bad Things” by Njoi. I bought this back when it came out in 1995 but for some reason I sold it as part of a big clear out prior to moving to Bournemouth in 1999. Fast forward to a year ago, this track randomly popped into my head. I was then immediately kicking myself having sold my copy of it all those years ago. Less than 48 hours later I’m in town with a little time to kill. I pop into a charity shop (I’m obsessed with picking up second hand cd’s) and sitting there in the vinyl rack was this very record. What are the odds? I couldn’t believe it! In excellent condition and only £4. I snapped it straight up. Glad to have it back in my collection.

I was bouncing around the room whilst putting this together. I like how it flips halfway through from a clubby vibe into more disco-edged grooves. AS usual it's mostly retro house jams but there's also a cheeky addition of 'As We Step' by the Audio Bullys, a more recent tune that is dripping with retro vibes.

Episode 121 - Loops of Life

After the love-fest from the previous episode we are back down to clubby business for episode 121 of Retro House Mixtape. Starting off with an acappella combo that I recently discovered by chance, it's a sublime mix between the work of King Unique and the vocal from "Someday" by CeCe Rogers.

It's a clubby first half including "Loops of Life", a favourite of mine that I remember picking up from BangBang record shop in Bristol. From there the mix transitions into funkier territory bouncing between disco vibes and 80's-esque house from Fred Falke. For the final track we end up in the familiar company of the Rhythm Masters as they remix 'Jus' Come' by Cool Jack. Hope you enjoy this one.

Episode 120 - The Word is Love

Seeing as this episode releases over Valentine's weekend I thought I would put together a "love themed" episode. Every track in this 60-minute mix references LOVE in some way or another.

It unexpectedly ended up being a mix that works through various flavours of house. We start in the early 90's with some piano house anthems, drop into some mid-90's epic house, slide into some filtered disco thumpers and then finish on a soulful vocal house tip.

Episode 119 - Bring It On Down

I felt like dipping into more disco-tinged territory for this mixtape after the trance and stompin' house shenanigans of the previous episode. For this mixtape we kick things off with a disco-dub remix by the legendary François Kevorkian. At the same time I also have a bit of fun by playing around with the vocal from "Anytime" by Nu-Birth to create something new and interesting.

From there we flow through some tasty disco house grooves before ending up with the classic "Bring it on Down" by Wildchild. I enjoyed putting this one together. Episode 118 - Back Once Again

Well hello there. It truly has been a while hasn't it? So yeah, I've been away doing a thing with making music (something I've been mucking about with since the late 90's) and that's been a bit of fun. But over the last few months I've had the itch to record a new mixtape and come back to this project.

And so here we are. A new mixtape to kick off a string of new episodes coming out in 2026. This one starts off big and dramatic with an anthem from the rave-era. From there we move through to some classic trance tracks, dip into some melodic late-90's trance and finish up with a stompin' mid-90's house vibe.

The plan is to release a new mixtape every other week, most likely on Fridays. So keep an eye out for when those new episodes go live.

It's been 25 years this week since Norman Cook put out the Fatboy Slim debut album 'Better Living Through Chemistry'. I thought it would be interesting to put together a mix based on the tracks from the album. Not just a normal mix though, I've been diving into the tracks themselves to pull out loops and samples which are sprinkled through this DJ set. It's a little chaotic but then again that seems on theme when you're talking about Fatboy Slim.

Frankie Knuckles once said that House Music was Disco’s Revenge. That statement was the basis for this week’s episode. I wanted to record an episode that runs at a slightly lower tempo and works as a warmup mixtape. The kind of set that would fit perfectly for that late afternoon/early evening slot on a sunny day. This episode starts with an old Royksopp/Incognito bootleg that I made in the early 2000’s (I really should make an updated version) before swerving into a full on disco re-edit session. There are some irresistibly funky jams going on in this episode. I really enjoyed putting this one together. Hope you like it too.

Episode 76 – ‘End of 2019’ Special Extended Episode

Aaaaaaand here it is. The final episode of Retro House Mixtape for 2019. Last year I did an extended ‘Big Fat End of 2018‘ episode and for this year it’s another bumper set of bangers from years gone by that will fire up any Festive/New Years party that you might be having. In other news, Retro House Mixtape is taking a little hiatus for a few months. Yep, after 76 weekly episodes I decided that the end of 2019 was a good time to take a short break from doing the show.

Particular favourites of mine include the opening track, a Gui Boratto remix of Massive Attack and a Shadow Child remix of ‘Strong’ by London Grammar. Despite the deeper tone I still manage to squeeze in a couple of bangers towards the end. I just can’t resist the pull of tunes that make me want to dance like a nutter.

It’s a slight change of pace this week on the Retro House Mixtape as we dip into a selection of tunes from the early 2000’s. It’s a clubby & chunky set with a few acapellas dropped in to create some pretty cool sounding moments. I particularly like how the acapella from Bump’s ‘I’m Rushing’ works with ‘That Piano Track’. Also of note is ‘Pump It Up’ by Danzell, a mid-2000’s tune that lifts the same ‘Black and White Brothers’ sample as the current club banger by Endor.

This week’s episode is a 60 minute journey of Retro House that takes you from the Beach to the Main Room. There is a funky summer style in the beginning including an all time classic from Frankie Knuckles (happy Frankie Knuckles day btw if you’re reading this on August 25th).

The second half of the mix takes a turn into bigger, more club based territory and features a replay of one of my all time favourites, ‘Help Me Make It’ by Huff and Puff (originally played in Episode 7 of Retro House Mixtape, do check that one out also).

Fun fact: Frankie’s old ‘Def-Mix’ buddy Satoshi Tomiie also makes his debut on Retro House Mixtape with TWO tracks in this episode.

There’s the dub take on ‘Sweetest Day of May’ by Joe T Vanelli and Marlon D’s deep house monster ‘Jesus Creates Sounds’ also gets an airing.

There’s always room for a banger or two though as Dave Spoon delivers a cracking remix of ‘Right Before My Eyes’ by Southside Hustlers.

It’s sometimes funny how these episodes come about. A lot of the time it’s as simple as thinking of that first track and building from there. I had this opening track by Eve Gallagher pencilled in as an opener for weeks now with the intention of building it into a melodic, clubby set that climaxed with some big epic tunes. Instead this set starts off on that same clubby vibe but by the end it steers into a more ‘ravey’ direction but hey, it works for me so that’s all good.

I wanted to do something a little different for Episode 20 of Retro House Mixtape and as luck would have it something perfect was happening on the same day as this episode. One of my all time favourite bands, The Prodigy, were releasing their latest album ‘No Tourists’. I’ve been lucky enough to catch them live on three separate occasions and every time they have torn the roof off the place. It’s not often that a new Prodigy album comes around so I couldn’t resist putting a mix together to mark the occasion.

After last weeks mix of garage rhythms and big fat basslines it seemed like a good idea to follow it with a different vibe. I guess you could call this mix ‘progressive’, it’s very synth-based and melodic with a fair few vocal tracks to boot. The opening track by The Beloved is a long time favourite of mine, the backing vocals are so good on that track. There’s also a rare U2 remix in there by house music legends Pete Heller and Terry Farley that is bursting with juicy old school house vibes.

Episode 11 - The Speed Garage Mixtape

I thought I’d switch things up this week by putting together set based solely around one genre of house music. I’ve enjoyed dropping the more bass heavy tracks in the previous episodes. I figured it would be fun to do a whole episode based around ‘Speed Garage’. These days it’s probably more known as ‘UK Garage’ but I’m a stickler for old habits. The tag ‘Speed Garage’ takes me back to digging through the racks at records shops for those elusive bootlegs.

There’s a little smattering of the funky ‘London-vibed’ vocal stuff at the start of this mix but it’s not long before the bass bin bangers start to drop. I tried to avoid the huge anthems (Spin Spin Sugar, Gunman etc) so I could make room for more lesser known tracks, I did get a request for Ripgroove however so I’ve dropped in a remix to keep things fresh.

This episode almost nearly didn’t happen. A few short hours ago a couple of free tickets to Bestival were placed into my hands, talk about a jammy piece of luck! I’ve had to turn this episode out super quick at the last minute whilst frantically packing for a weekend of camping and festival shenanigans. It starts off on an old school house music vibe but by the end it’s properly chugging along.

There are a few choice cuts in there this week. ‘At Night’ by Shakedown is having a huge resurgence thanks to some excellent new remixes by Purple Disco Machine and Peggy Gou, I thought I’d throw in the Kid Creme mix which still sounds great today. There’s also the superb remix of ‘Show Me Love’ by Todd Edwards where he takes an all time classic tune and totally reworks it into something brilliant. Finally I also wanted to get the Hardfloor remix of ‘Blue Monday’ by New Order in there somewhere as it’s having a mini revival here in the U.K. thanks to a TV advert.
