Planning Ideas - Plain Text Version

The trick to pagan planning is there is no trick. Quite simply, you look at the various sites that are available and see what you think will be relevant to you.

I suggest you start small with the following:

Moons

• Esbats or Full moons (and their relevant names/energies/astro sign - see sticker printable)
• Dark moons (and their relevant names/energies/astro sign)

Sabbats

• Check your Wheel of the Year for the 8 key points of the year.
• They are mostly on the same dates every year, so fairly easy to add

 NOTE: Equinox times and dates are astrologically based so they vary from year to year. Also if you are SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE, remember your calendar is alternate. While the next date on the Northern calendar is Feb 1/2 Imbolc, in the Southern hemisphere you ’ll be celebrating Lammas.

• Key astrological events and Transits  
  • Even if you’re not ‘into’ astrology there are some things that will be relevant, just like the moon phase. The changing of the sun sign, retrograde personal planets and ‘big’ events for planets you are closely associated with.
• ‘Big Aspects’  
  • For example, if you have Mercury in a key place on your chart, the Retrogrades will be important.
  • If you have a strong Aries/Mars and Sagittarius/Capricorn connection, then the square on the 21st will be important because it is a tense relationship and both planets are exalted. Don’t worry if you’re new to this and don’t understand it. We’re going to look at some of this next week. If you did last year’s class though, you should be able to start pulling out key events in the astrological year.
• Eclipses  
  • Lunar and Solar eclipses happen a lot but if you have one in your sign, conjunct a key point in your chart or a solar eclipse where you live, then you will want to know when that is happening.
  • Remember, just because you’re not ‘into’ astrology, doesn’t mean these aren’t important for other work like shadow work (dark moon), internal reflection (Mercury retrograde) and spell work (there’s a Mars/Aries trine Jupiter/Sagittarius in late January that will be great for kickstarting your Spring cleaning!
• Personal Times  
  • There are certain times in the year you will automatically put in your calendar especially if you ‘celebrate’ them. Birthdays, Anniversaries and so on.
  • Don’t overlook other times of importance such as the anniversary of a loved one’s passing, the time before you start a new job or the weeks before a house move and so on.
  • You can even note things like suggested goal completion dates where you might want to do a tarot reading or spell work.

As you grow in your craft you’ll think of new things to add to your calendar. Planning and harvest times for herbs, the best times to work with chakras and spirit guides and so on. Don’t rush it. Stick to ‘what you need’ rather than ‘everything that’s available’.

If you don’t know how to use it, you don’t need all of it!

Spirit Animals

What animal has always followed you, or have you always loved? It could be a domestic animal that you have always had in your life, a wild animal you have always gravitated toward or a mythological creature you inexplicably 'collect'. They can be any type of animal - mammal, fish, amphibian, reptile, bird - even a specific type or breed.

• Without looking up anything, try to identify how you feel about this animal, why you are drawn to it and what message it might hold.
• Consider writing a conversation between you and your spirit animal. Be open to asking it questions, allow your intuition to give you answers. Imagine it like a scene from a film and describe what is happening.

Totem Animals

Have you noticed the sudden or recent appearance of a particular animal in your life, that keeps turning up. This will normally be very obvious and synchronous. You might finish watching a documentary about the animal only to go on Facebook and a friend has sent you a video of one, for example.

Look up the characteristics of this totem at https://www.spirit-animals.com

• What recent events come to mind that may be connected to this message?
• If nothing comes to mind immediately, consider a situation or person that has recently been 'giving you vibes'. Maybe someone you've met just doesn't seem quite right, or a certain situation keeps calling your attention. Could the message be connected to that?

Look for further references to this animal - quotes that speak to you, songs you recall, even facts you know about these animals. What messages may be hidden in there?

Bear in mind that while a Spirit Animal may be obvious and easily interpretable, Animal Totems can take years to figure out and may only be clear in retrospect.

NOTE: The site mentioned above calls Spirit Animals Totem Animals. It refers to Totem Animals as 'animals that have crossed your path’.

• Look at your word of the year and ask yourself if it embodies a feeling you want to achieve in your life. If it doesn't, what feeling would enable you to have this particular word in your life?
• Look up words that mean the same as your word. How can you do or bring more of these in your life?
• Look up words that mean exactly the opposite. What can you do to minimise these things in your life?
• What does your word mean to you on a physical, emotional, spiritual or mental level?
• How will your life improve if you embody this word in your everyday life?
• What is one thing you can do today to embody your word of the year? Go do it! Start now.

Make a Mind Map of this information, so you can see how it relates to each other, and try to pinpoint some key areas to begin with.

Remember, you have a whole year to work on this! Choose one thing and pledge to work on that for the rest of this month.

Look at your birth chart and see what's important that's coming up this month. There are only 8 potential aspects this month, so even if every single one applies to you, you will still only have 7 (two are on the same day).

If you are a Scorpio, you might want to print your natal-transit chart for your birthday as that is a significant day.

In terms of next month's Book of Shadows work, do bear in mind that you don't have to have one, you don't have to ascribe to being a witch or spiritual practitioner and yes, by all means, if you want to look at it in terms of your own personal beliefs/religion etc you can. If you're open to ideas of how, rather than what, then you can still learn to keep spiritual journals and books whatever you believe or ascribe to.
