Introduction

Most of us carry some kind of longing, even during Christmas time. For some, it’s a longing for peace—because life has been noisy and heavy. For others, it’s a longing for healing, direction, forgiveness, or simply rest. Even in a season full of lights and songs, we can feel that something is still missing. So, we long for that “something” even during Christmas time.

That longing is not a weakness. It’s a clue. It reminds us that we were made for more than what this world can give.

In Luke 2:22-40, we see two old people longing for God to keep His promise. They’ve been waiting a long time. One day in the temple, they discovered something life-changing: the answer to their longing was right there in front of them—a six-week-old baby named Jesus.

Tonight we can say this with confidence: Jesus is the hope of the world. Why? Our longings are not answered by ideas or rituals—but by a Person.

Two Reasons

1. Jesus lived the life we could not live (vv.22-24, 39-40).

Explanation: From the very beginning, Jesus walked in perfect obedience to God—what we could never fully do on our own. That’s why His righteousness has become our righteousness by grace through faith. He obeyed where we failed—so that His obedience could be credited to us.

Application: When you trust in Jesus, you no longer need to be afraid of failing God. There is now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus.

2. Jesus gives the life we long to live (vv.25-38).

Explanation: Jesus is God’s salvation—hope, peace, and light—not just promised, but present and personal, and not just for Israel, but for the whole world. Simeon didn’t see a program or a political solution—he saw a Person.

Application: By faith in Jesus, we can experience the life that is truly life. He now lives in us through the Holy Spirit to experience the God-kind of life.

Conclusion

Jesus lived the life we could not live. Jesus gives the life we long to live.

This is why Christmas is the perfect time to tell people (and ourselves): “Jesus is the hope of the world.”

Tonight, Jesus is not just the hope of the world—He can be your hope.

Have you ever felt like you’re in a battle that you cannot overcome? Maybe it’s anxiety that keeps coming back. A temptation you thought you’d overcome. A broken relationship. Or a prayer that remains unanswered. You try to fight, but the battle feels overwhelming. Some of us are tired. Some have given up. Others are wounded, and the scars are still fresh. Maybe people close to you—family, friends, even churchmates—have been casualties of these spiritual struggles.

How do we win our battles? Let’s turn to Ephesians 6:10–20...

THREE REMINDERS

1. OUR BATTLE BELONGS TO THE LORD

(Ephesians 6:10–13) - Paul says: “Be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.” Notice he doesn’t say, “Be strong in yourself.” That’s good news. Because we often try to fight in our own strength—only to fall short. The armor we’re told to put on is God’s armor. He is the true warrior. In the Old Testament, God is repeatedly portrayed as fighting for His people—delivering Israel, defeating their enemies, and protecting the helpless. This isn’t just poetic. It’s our spiritual reality.

2. OUR ARMOR MUST COME FROM THE LORD

(Ephesians 6:14–17) - Paul then describes the armor of God: the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit (the word of God). These aren’t just symbolic—they represent the essential elements of our relationship with God. They’re not tools we manufacture. They are gifts of grace.

3. OUR VICTORY MUST BE FOR THE LORD

(Ephesians 6:18–20) - Finally, Paul tells us to pray—“on all occasions with all kinds of prayers.” Prayer isn’t just another weapon—it’s the atmosphere of the battle. It’s how we stay connected to our Commander. And what’s the purpose of this victory? Not just for our comfort. Not just to survive another week. But for God’s mission to advance.

CONCLUSION

Our battles must be God’s battles fought in God’s way.

Many people say, “I believe in God” or “I believe in Jesus,” but are these just beliefs or deep convictions? Beliefs can be learned or repeated, but true convictions are deeply held, tested truths that shape how we live—even what we’d be willing to die for. In Romans 8:31-39, Paul expresses deep conviction about God’s love through faith in Jesus.

How to Grow from Beliefs to Convictions:

1. Think deeply about Christ’s work (Romans 8:31–34): Christ’s sacrifice and resurrection assure us that we are secure before God. His ongoing intercession means no accusation or opposition can defeat us. Reflecting on this strengthens our confidence and courage in life’s challenges.
2. Trust fully in Christ’s love (Romans 8:35–39): Nothing—no hardship, fear, or spiritual force—can separate us from Christ’s love. His love is constant and sustaining. Trusting fully in His love helps us rely on Him completely through every situation.

Conclusion: If your faith feels fragile, that’s okay; deep convictions take time. God wants to transform shallow beliefs into strong convictions through the Holy Spirit. By thinking deeply about Christ’s work and trusting fully in His love, we can stand firm no matter what happens.

Application: Take a moment now to ask yourself where you need to move from belief to conviction—whether it’s about your identity, future, worth, or God’s faithfulness. Pray for the Holy Spirit to deepen your faith into unshakable conviction.

Closing Prayer: Lord, help us grow from shallow faith into deep conviction by Your love and power. In Jesus' name. Amen.

The promise of resurrection gives hope for the future, but how do we live for God now amid struggles, guilt, and temptation? Romans 8:1–11 offers a message of hope and freedom through Jesus Christ, addressing three major problems that hold us back and showing how we can live free today.

Three Big Problems Resolved

1. No Longer Condemned (Romans 8:1–4) - Through Jesus, believers are no longer judged guilty or condemned. Jesus lived a sinless life, died for our sins, and rose again, freeing us from sin and death. The law could not save because people always fail it, but Jesus fulfilled it perfectly and took our punishment. This brings forgiveness, grace, and full acceptance as God’s children instead of rejection. The question is: Are you still carrying guilt that Jesus already removed? It’s time to live free in Christ.
2. No Longer Bound to Fail (Romans 8:5–8) - Focusing only on selfish desires leads to choices that separate us from God and cause failure. But living by the Spirit changes our focus, bringing life, peace, and the ability to please God. Before knowing Jesus, our minds were controlled by selfish thoughts causing disobedience. Now, with the Holy Spirit in us, we receive new desires and strength to live in ways that honor God. The challenge: How are you setting your mind on the Spirit this week? By doing so, you can please God.
3. No Longer Powerless (Romans 8:9–11) - Believers are God’s temple where the Holy Spirit lives, giving daily strength to change and live for God. Though our bodies are mortal and face death, the same Spirit who raised Jesus empowers us to face life’s challenges. Having the Spirit means we belong to Jesus and will one day be raised like Him. For now, God’s Spirit guides and empowers us every day. Reflect: Where do you get your strength to live for God daily? In Christ, through the Spirit, we experience God’s power and presence.

Conclusion

Because of Jesus’ good news, we are freed from guilt, failure, and the weight of past mistakes. Our minds are renewed as we focus on the Holy Spirit living in us, giving strength to obey God confidently despite an imperfect world. In Jesus, freedom is available to live fully today.
