Logan Rogers from Cloakroom Comics got in touch with us to tell us all about the Tales From The Cloakroom Vol 2, an upcoming Kickstarter that should be releasing in May. We sat down with them and fellow editor Jason Holtzman for a chat about the project, how the team got together over Scott Snyders' Our Best Jackett substack and the upcoming appearances they have at C2E2. We then created a pirate DJ who was ready to dominate the seas with their beats, all the while wearing a comedy ship as a head in a similar form to Deadmau5. Jorin has been doing improv since 1991 and Chris had the opportunity to take two classes with him at the Robin Hood International Improv festival in Nottingham in September 2022. Nathan and Chris got inspired by the chat and figured out what the relationship would be between a tiny crow punk and a gentle alien plumber.

Gem Sheldrake, is an artist, comic creator, graphic designer for 2000AD and small press enthusiast. We accidentally hit on Gem's love for Arthur Morgan and traversed the usefulness of gaming to give your brain a break or to inspire you. We also talk about depression, how it's hard only having a small space to differentiate the difference between "work" and "home" and Gem's recent project with old Uni buddy and previous guest Phasechan.

During our creative section, we create a cyberpunk-styled world with our main protagonist filtering through the muck with their extra arms in order to find some space change in the form of some luminous crab. Oh... and there is a monkey! We can't thank Gem enough for her time and involvement with the show.

This is our final chat of the year and we end the year with multi-talented creator Chris Bissette.

In their own words, Chris is a TTRPG designer, writer, vocalist and musician. In 2021 Chris decided that they would go "full-time" into their creative endeavours and things seem to be going okay so far. We spoke to them about the benefits of using a physical device to add tension to RPGs, their music and how there is a huge difference between enjoying writing and enjoying the act of having written something.

All of that was before we created a new made-for-TikTok show featuring influencer "Kid-nap" whose USP is voluntarily being kidnapped by Pirates in order to make awesome content. Confused? You should be.

Kat's illustration work includes a range of cards, invites and even bespoke illustrations. Let's not forget that the Dinos and Dice Rolls Comic Kickstarter surpassed 300% of its funding which has to be declared a success. There is so much more to her work drawing cute dinosaurs going on adventures though.

It was lovely to chat with Kat and then catch her in real life when we met her at Thought Bubble. We hope that she had an excellent convention, we really enjoyed creating a space theatre with her and we can highly recommend checking out her work.

Bristol-based artist Katie Fishlock is celebrating the joy of sexual pleasure and relationship with the self. Both provocative and playful, she is also challenging the boundaries of portraying sexuality in this often-complex world. A former Graduate of Falmouth School of Art (2008), she has worked extensively as a make-up artist and stylist within the fashion industry, including with Boy George and Alexander McQueen.

When we got in touch with Katie we had no idea that she was going to turn the tables on us a bit in order for the interview to work for her current energy levels. Since we encourage things like spontaneity and experimenting with things we thought it would be really hypocritical to say no.

We chatted to Katie about her current work and draw what came into our minds or indeed into our fingers, we would love to see what you draw from this episode. We kick off May with another fantastic artist, illustrator and award-winning comic maker Shazleen Khan.

We took a bit of a whirlwind tour through their history in the comic industry and how they get actual pleasure from the physical act of drawing. Shazleen has been working on their webcomic BUUZA!! since 2019 and is enjoying using actual time as an element and making the reader commit in the long haul.

For our creative section, we come up with a rhythm-based game loosely connected to Pa Rapper the Rapper where the stars of the game are guiding a giant cosmic-friendly bee to a safer place.

Not only did Gustaffo work on the really interesting Quarantine Comic by Jordan Thomas, he also worked on Skrawl: Comix Magazine and drew, funded, and released his own work Puno. We chat to Gustaffo about his really busy year, his work, his incredible use of colour, inspirations and so much more.

We got to chat with another creative across the pond in the form of Cooper Shaw. Cooper is an actor, director and teacher at the well-known Second City training school. Chris got to know her a bit while he was taking the Dialects and Character Voices course that was run by Cooper over Zoom

It was lovely to dip into Cooper's history and work and how encouraging she is when learning to use your voice as an instrument. She has an infectious teaching method which is fun and encouraging so if you are interested in learning more about accents and dialects we would recommend you take a look at the course.

Here we are with our second producer of the occult and spooky material. Here is a chat with T. W. Burgess, a writer and purveyor of horror, especially ghost stories. We had a bit of audio difficulty with this and we hope it does not ruin your listening enjoyment.

We went on a HUGE horror movie tangent and picked up on how important it is to dig into those old folk tales for more material. We dug into the success of the Early Haunts Kickstarter and what is coming up.

We talked to James about how the publishing house came about after he received a rather harsh piece of criticism on a piece of his writing. He also speaks about finding the right audience, the controversy around e-books, his love of the Hammer House of Horror series of films, what Kickstarter has brought into the world and how Peter Cushing was really into his tabletop gaming and a massive nerd.

We had a remote chat with Improvisor, Radio producer and Podcaster Lloydie James Lloyd. Chris has been delving into what Lloydie has been up to with his Improv Chronicle Podcast, not something everyone might enjoy but if you are interested in Improv then we would certainly recommend it for a very consumable deep dive into some very interesting topics.

Lloydie was slightly reserved about the drawing section of our show but I do feel that he enjoyed creating a planet that was being run by two mobsters who have a certain penchant for musicals. We persuaded him to draw with us and love his depiction of "Lil Larry", check out the drawings via our social media.

For February we bring you the first of two scheduled episodes. We managed to grab some time with the owner of Buy Small Press an Indie marketplace, Aaron Rackley.

We can't thank Aaron enough for his time. He spoke to us about his day job as a Scrum Master and being a sometime developer. The publishing house that he set up to try and provide books for all ages, the charity he runs, typography and more about how Buy Small Press came about. Aaron spoke openly about mental health without us asking him and we appreciate his openness about that. We dig a bit more into his plans for the Indie Marketplace and then get him creating with us.

As promised we set up and had a great chat with Andy Perry the writer of the Reanimator Incorporated Graphic Novel. Having already spoken to the artist Lyndon White.

We dive into his writing process a fair bit and how he wanted the whole process to be collaborative with Lyndon. He does mention just how valuable the editing process was and how it reformed the story. We talk a little about a writing retreat that he went on with Arvon and as a writer just how much that improved his ways of giving and receiving feedback.

We loved chatting with Andy and thanked him for being patient with our technical difficulties, turns out it all worked out. You can grab a copy of the graphic novel via Backerkit. We are eagerly awaiting the release of Volume 2.

Art Nine Two

Fantastic independent artists and comic book creators Damian and Helena make up Art Nine Two and for us, it was a huge amount of fun to sit and chat with them.

Damian's recent comic GGA (Galaxy Grappling Alliance) is a huge homage to the early days of the WWE. He has a passion for wrestling and movies and runs his own podcast called Omen to That. Helena is a portrait artist but has also an amazing talent for pet portraits. Over the lockdown, she has put a lot of time and energy into the Patreon to supply some really good art tutorial videos. These are really affordable for people who want to see how she puts her work together and even shows you her mistakes.

We met Joe at Thought Bubble 2019 and Chris loved his watercolour-style comic The Fox, The Wolf and The Woodsman but we didn't get much of a chance to chat with him. So it was interesting to dig into Joe's history and learn how he grew into web design. Making MySpace (remember that?) pages for some UK-based celebrities to name a few things that he has turned his hand to. He still takes on design projects both for web and physical if he has the time, space and clients but would much rather spend a lot more time working on comics.

Welcome back for a rather chilled episode with the wonderful Graham Johnson. Graham is a producer, improviser and illustrator to name a few things. We chat to Graham about his early influences like the webcomics Questionable Content and Dresden Codac. It's really interesting to hear Graham talk about how these "Slice of Life" style comics appealed to him more than the superhero/fantasy style.

We dive into being able to work with the fantastic Kid Carpet and his current projects which include drawing an entire tarot deck of Cute Squishy Boys. All that and some tangents skip through Musical Theatre, the works of Nicholas Cage and a Lloyds Bank commercial.

We arrange a chat with creative problem solver Mat Roff. Sadly, we had a little issue with our audio on this episode but Mat's audio is great and after all, it is all about our guest and not us.

Mat helped us in a bit of a deep dive into why fan art can be so important in any artist's journey. He told us how everything for him is classed as some sort of collaboration and how that keeps his work fun and interesting for him and his clients. His openness is something we applaud, it's not always about the final product, and sometimes the journey is much more important.

Professor Lucy Rogers (PhD) is an inventor with a sense of fun. She is a Royal Academy of Engineers visiting Professor of Engineering: Creativity and Communication at Brunel University, London, a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and she is adept at bringing ideas to life, from robot dinosaurs to mini-mannequins and even a "fartometer" for IBM! Chris had the pleasure of meeting Lucy at an improve intensive weekend with The Maydays and just knew we had to get her on the podcast.

Lucy has turned her hand to a plethora of things in her personal and professional life and virtually all of them have some form of creativity in them. It was really interesting to talk to her about her experience at the intensive weekend and the more recent release of Season 3 of The Design Spark podcast that she does with Bec Hill and Harriet Briane.

We sat down with Director and all-round awesome human being Melanie Light way back in February before the lockdown was put in place and now we finally bring it to you.

Melanie not only writes and directs her own films but she is also a huge part of the Women In Horror month putting on amazing horror showcases. If that was not enough and is a huge advocate and voice for female representation in the film industry, especially in the horror scene.

Her short film The Herd won several awards including Best Horror Short at the London Independent Film Festival (UK) but don't judge Mel by the hard-hitting nature of the film. We talk a lot about her history, work, and the challenges that faced not just as a director but all women in the film industry. We do of course get Mel drawing with us and I love what we come up with.

Samuel George London

We met Sam at True Believers (2020) and invested in his Milford Green comic books. It's amazing that Sam had never even written a major fictional story until he wrote Milford Green. He did so with the help of a structure laid out by Dan Harmon called the Story Circle and drawn by ace Finnish artist Mikael Hankonen. Sam talks about his experience with Kickstarter, how he found Mikael, delivering the final part of Milford Green, his love of a Museum in Baisingstoke and his upcoming projects which we are looking forward to.

On top of that, we make up a wonderful story that we are sure Marvel will be all over if they have any sense.

Arthole

This episode was recorded at the beginning of March. Elliot and Kay collectively known as Arthole joined us after a full day at the Bristol art fair Shake. We fed them and plied them with tea to find out more about their own art fair, style, interests, influences and whatnot.

Of course, we also made them roll some dice and invent something on the spot and they did not let us down. How Kay managed to draw a whole page of a comic in such a short space of time is beyond us.

Matt Emeny

Welcome to our April episode where most of the world seems to be in some sort of lockdown (including the UK). We hope that you are well and employing some sort of social distancing.

We had this interview with Matt Emeny already recorded and obviously, we want to bring it to you so that you can check out his work. Matt makes his own theatre productions, acts and would love to direct his own movies. Chris has been working with Matt for the past few months as part of the theatre training that Matt provides with The Natural Theatre Company on some devised theatre. Matt's work in ranges from fun children's theatre the Father Christmas Workshop (2019) to the more Back Page that explores human trafficking in the West Country.

Matt talks about the challenges and stereotypes that are associated with Dyslexia. He has certainly found ways to dispel them and make his condition work for him to be a more natural performer.

We took a trip in early Feb to Cheltenham to check out True Believers Comic Festival. There we caught up with a multi-talented creative CB. We first bumped into CB at Cardiff comic con and we were compelled to have them on the Podcast as soon as we could. It took a while to set up but we got there in the end.

CB has produced two awesome comics; ThirteeN, the adult erotic demon zine about a former witch who is thrown into a life of servitude in the fiery pits of the underworld and Avery Chase a Sci-fi action-adventure extravaganza. CB also draws awesome illustrations some of which are more sensual than others. We hope that you take some time to check out their work and spread the word.

2019 in review and plans for 2020

Happy new year from both of us. We had recorded a whole episode with the amazing Katy Shutte but due to technical difficulties, we don't have any of that audio. We will say that if you have the chance to check out any of Katy's work then please do so. We would like to also thank the Bristol Improv Theatre for giving us space and time to record with Katy. We will fix the technical issues and have a back up for this year.

So this episode is just a bit of a look back on our first year of podcasting and a look into the future. We cover some listening stats, Chris sets a challenge to our listeners with a mystery prize, we talk about the fantastic book How To Think When You Draw by The Etherington Brothers (sorry for the mis-pronounciation of your name) and the fabulous art by Chris Barker. We fill you in on the ongoing work by our first podcast guest Sophie Iles who has had a busy year despite having some horrible things happen in her personal life.

We hope to talk to more amazing talents this throughout 2020. Thanks for listening and if you could one thing for us and just tell someone about this podcast we would greatly appreciate it.

Sarah Millman - Part 2

In this section we get Sarah rolling a whole bunch of dice in which she gets what is known in D&D as a critical fail! Sarah Millman - Part 1

Sarah is a writer and artist that we found at Cardiff MCM. It was because her comic involved tea which Chris drinks a lot of and because our initial chat with her just felt so natural we really wanted to get her in for a chat and we are so glad she said yes. We had to split this into two parts because there was just so much that we covered. In this part, we dig a bit into Sarah's history and how she feels about people believing in her work. Sarah is also a DM for a D&D group that she runs over Skype and I can only imagine how much fun it is to be in one of her sessions. If ever she needs a guest character I am sure that Nathan and Chris will be only too happy to join in.

We are honoured to have the wonderful improviser and sketch comedy performer/writer Ros Beeson join us. As much as this might sound like clickbait you would not believe what ends up being rolled by the dice when we get to it. Seriously we did NOT plan this.

Ros is a great performer and we had no idea before we spoke to her that she had recently taken back up drawing. We dig into Ros' past a little and she explains how she got together with fellow university people to form the sketch-based comedy group Up The Antics and now that she fronts the Bish Bash Bosh that you can see at the Bristol Improv Theatre.

Ros spills the beans on how prop cigarettes work and teases us with talk about the upcoming show she is working on called Level Up in coordination with the Unscripted Players. You can catch this on the 15th & 16th November 2019 at the Bristol Improv Theatre, see their website for more details.

This month we get spooky a little early with the talents of Gwdihoo (aka Goody Who). She is an awesome creative who has just become an art fair dad with the SUMMER SCREAM event. There is space in the world for spooky art fairs and so she set up the Ghoul Gang Collective along with her buddy Fruit & Bone. We get Goody to tell us what goes into having a tattoo apprenticeship and her influences. We go off on some pretty big tangents that take us through Christopher Robin as a horror movie, the works of Jan Svankmajer, Grace Neutral, Ryu Murakami and his book In The Miso Soup and one particular bit of work by the amazing Junji Ito.
