Rockin' Robin est une chanson américaine de Bobby Day écrite et composée par Leon René sous le pseudonyme de Jimmie Thomas et sortie en 1958.

💡 Impact culturel

Elle est aujourd’hui considérée comme un standard du rock 'n' roll des années 50.

Très présente dans les bandes-son de films, publicités et émissions pour enfants.

Elle a été reprise par de nombreux artistes et utilisée dans d’innombrables compilations rétro.

Fait intéressant : « Rockin' Robin » est dans le domaine public , car les propriétaires n'ont jamais renouvelé le droit d'auteur.

La version de Cliff Richard représente une adaptation fidèle mais plus claire et accessible de l’original, incarnant l’esprit du rock ‘n’ roll britanno-européen des tout débuts. Ce sample vintages ajoute une touche funky, accrocheuse, très contrastante avec les paroles modernes

Bonjour et bienvenue dans CPDTL_SAMPLES Episode 94, intitulé "MACHO MAN"

Nous n'allons pas revisiter le tube des Village People, j'ai bien trop de RESPECT !

Ah justement c'est le son interplanétaire intitulé "RESPECT" qui fait l'objet de cette chronique.

Respect... Ce titre mythique d’Aretha Franklin, on le connaît tous comme un hymne féministe. 

Mais saviez-vous qu’à l’origine, c’était une chanson... machiste ?

01 - 1965 - Otis Redding - Respect

En 1965, Otis Redding écrit Respect du point de vue d’un homme qui travaille dur et réclame 

un peu d’obéissance à sa femme. 

02 - 1965 - The Beatles - Drive my car

Derrière le riff funky de Drive My Car des Beatles, il y a... Otis Redding ?

Paul McCartney adore le groove irrésistible de la ligne de basse de RESPECT et veut capturer cette énergie.

Le résultat ? Drive My Car, rend hommage, sans copier, à RESPECT version Otis.

03 - 1966 - Johnny Hallyday - Du respect

Johnny Hallyday reprend trait pour trait la version d'Otis Redding dans laquelle il cherche à s'affirmer en tant que chef de famille qui s'occupe financièrement des siens et qui devrait donc être adulé pour cela.

04 - 1967 - Aretha Franklin - Respect

En 1967, Aretha Franklin reprend le morceau — et le retourne complètement.

Elle en fait une revendication forte, celle d’une femme qui exige du respect, à égalité, sans compromis. 

Elle change les paroles, ajoute le célèbre “R‑E‑S‑P‑E‑C‑T”, et transforme le fond comme la forme.

Le résultat ? Un tube immédiat, mais surtout un symbole. Un cri de ralliement pour les droits des femmes 

et pour la cause afro-américaine. En quelques minutes, Aretha ne reprend pas une chanson : elle la réinvente et en fait un manifeste.

En 2002, Lady Laistee s’associe à Diam’s sur Un Peu De Respect, un morceau urbain qui sample directement le mythique Respect d’Aretha Franklin (1967) 

Ils réutilisent des éléments sonores — notamment la ligne de basse et quelques vocalises de fond — pour ancrer leur création dans la tradition soul tout en y insufflant une énergie hip-hop moderne .

Cette fusion est représentative d’une époque où les rappeuses françaises empruntent aux géantes de la soul américaine pour renforcer leur propos, ici celui — évident — de respect, fil conducteur partagé.

Alors, même si c'est Otis, responsable de cette lignée d'artistes "sampleurs", "adaptateurs" ou "coveristes",

1961 - Patsy Cline - Crazy

La chanson “Crazy” est un classique incontournable du répertoire country américain, Écrite par Willie Nelson, mais c’est bien Patsy Cline qui l’a gravée dans la légende en 1961

Willie Nelson a d'abord essayé de vendre cette chanson avec quelques autres titres au chanteur de country Larry Butler, à dix dollars chacune. Butler a refusé, heureusement pour Patsy Cline qui, malgré le fait de ne pas aimer Crazy initialement, en a fait un énorme succès. Le mari de Cline, Charlie Dick, et son producteur, Owen Bradley, ont adoré la chanson et ont persuadé Patsy Cline de l'enregistrer.

Même si Patsy Cline ne fait pas partie du club des 27, elle aura juste survévu 3 ans de plus.

Le 14 juin 1961, Patsy Cline et son frère ont un accident de voiture.

Elle passe à travers le pare-brise et gardera les cicatrices de l'accident sur son front.

Mais c'est en 1963 qu'elle trouvera la mort dans un accident d'avion avec 3 autres icônes de la musique country. 

Et c'est en se rendant à son enterrement qu'un autre chanteur Jack Anglin se tue au volant de sa voiture.

1962 - Willie Nelson - Crazy

Un an plus tard, Willie Nelson en propose sa propre version, plus brute, plus folk

1977 - Loretta Lynn - Crazy

En 1977, Loretta Lynn reprend "Crazy" dans l’album I Remember Patsy, un hommage à son amie et mentor Patsy Cline, disparue en 1963. Leur lien personnel et professionnel était fort, Cline ayant soutenu les débuts de Lynn à Nashville. Dans sa version, Lynn conserve l’émotion de l’originale tout en y apportant sa propre sensibilité. Cette interprétation rend hommage à Cline et illustre l’évolution de la chanson à travers deux grandes voix de la country.

2005 - Charmaine Clamor - It Don't Mean a Thing (If it Ain't Got that Swing)

Charmaine Clamor est une chanteuse philippino-américaine de jazz et de soul, connue pour fusionner le jazz américain avec la musique traditionnelle philippine (kundiman). Elle est une figure phare du mouvement "jazzipino", qui mêle cultures orientale et occidentale.

2009 - Harry Axt - Cracy

Harry Axt est un producteur berlinois qui propose des paysages sonores techno sombres et captivants.

La version de Harry Axt intitulée "Crazy" est une réinterprétation techno minimale sortie en 2009. Elle s'inspire de l'ambiance de la chanson originale de Willie Nelson, popularisée par Patsy Cline, mais ne contient pas de sample direct identifiable. Cette adaptation se distingue par son approche électronique, transformant la mélancolie de la version originale en une expérience rythmique et immersive propre au genre techno.

2014 - Legitski Syndicates – Crazy Preview 

Un aperçu d'un beat personnalisé incorporant des samples de "Crazy", offrant une ambiance sombre et rythmée.

2023 - Xaolin Monk – KrAzY 

Ce beat instrumental hip-hop utilise des éléments de "Crazy" pour créer une atmosphère mélancolique et introspective.

2024 - Jae Hall - Crazy (Acoustic)
