Andrea is a comic book writer and creator, co-creating and writing (along with his son, Roberto) The Shepherd series. In addition, he is an editor with Scout Comics, Caliber Comics and has also worked with Amigo Comics in this capacity.

The Shepherd is a supernatural thriller comic book series set in the afterlife. Prof. Lawrence Miller falls into a dark vortex of guilt and anger after enduring the tragic death of his teenage son. He cannot shake the sense that his son is now a lost soul, wandering between heaven and earth. Grieving and profoundly disturbed, he pursues his son into the afterlife. 

Once on the other side, he encounters his deceased father and is given a mystical pendant of great power. Unfortunately, in Lawrence’s hands it becomes a weapon that allows him to unleash his fury on those who caused his son’s death, leaving a trail of insanity and chaos in his wake. His existence becomes a terrifying conflict between his unchecked anger and his dawning understanding that he has lost his way.

This week I’m so excited to introduce you to comics writer Markisan Naso!

Markisan is an accomplished author, editor, and podcaster based in Honolulu. He’s the writer of the comic book series BY THE HORNS and VORACIOUS and has written hundreds of features in print and on the web, covering subjects as diverse as EF5 tornadoes, death metal, and Superman. Markisan has also edited dozens of books including The Anatomy of Zur-en-Arrh: Understanding Grant Morrison’s Batman for the Sequart Organization, and revitalized national publications such as Knowledge Quest for the American Library Association. His first short story, “TO MEGA THERION,” was published in Outland Entertainment’s APEX: World of Dinosaurs Anthology in March.

Markisan is also the owner of Skull Fracture Records, which began releasing music based on story and myth in 2021. (Some of his stories even have accompanying music!). He loves spoiling his cat, Zoso, and talking heavy metal every month as a host on the METALHEADS Podcast.

This week I am losing-my-mind excited to chat with Leslye Headland.

Leslye Headland is an Emmy-nominated writer, producer, and director. She began her career writing and directing the SEVEN DEADLY PLAYS series, including Bachelorette and Assistance, which both had successful runs in New York. Bachelorette was the basis for her directorial film debut starring Kirsten Dunst, Isla Fisher, and Rebel Wilson. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2012. 

Most recently, Leslye served as writer, director, and showrunner for Netflix’s acclaimed series RUSSIAN DOLL (co-created by Natasha Lyonne and Amy Poehler), which was nominated for three Primetime Emmy Awards and nine Creative Arts Emmy Awards, the latter of which it won three. 

Leslye is currently working on the STAR WARS series THE ACOLYTE for Disney+ and serves as writer, executive producer, and showrunner. She is also currently directing and executive producing the Freeform pilot, SINGLE DRUNK FEMALE written by Simone Finch, executive produced by Jenni Konner, and starring Sofia Black-D’Elia, Ally Sheedy, Rebecca Henderson, Sasha Compère, Lily Mae Harrington, and Garrick Bernard. In addition to Star Wars and Single Drunk Female, Leslye has signed a multi-year, overall deal with Fox 21 Television Studios to create, develop and direct series for network, cable and streaming platforms.

Sidewalk Furniture is an angry nerd-rock band based in Durham NC. Their first full album, “Reimagined Thrill,” released just about a year ago in April. The album features a heavy punk sound with simple yet hard-hitting riffs and fun lyrics centered around sci-fi themes that relate to real-life experiences: queer culture, feminism, and relationships.

The heart and soul of Sidewalk Furniture was conceived in 2014 by Riley (vocals), Shelby (bass), and Shante (guitar) while they attended college, and originally started out as a folk band. They were later joined by drummer Lily Fey in 2019, who aided in drastically improving their sound and message. Over the years, they've shared the stage with great bands such as Candy Ambulance, [SiTH] Clan, Crunk Witch, GAMMA GAMMA RAY, and many more.

Jonathan Hedrick is a comic book writer/creator born and raised in Brevard County, Florida. Comics has always been a passion of his, and he recently began self-publishing his own titles. His current work includes the zombie one-shots Freakshow Princess & Freakshow Knight (from Second Sight Publishing), a superhero story called Capable, and the political thriller The Recount (from Scout Comics). In addition to being a writer, Jonathan is an Army veteran and a licensed radiologic technologist. 

In addition to his published comics projects, Jonathan is running a Kickstarter right now! It’s for Issue One of Quicksand:

A mysterious hole forms in the Egyptian desert.  Horrific creatures come pouring out of  the fissure and attack nearby citizens. Soon after, they retreat into the crevice from which they came.

Specialists from all over the world gather to make sense of this unfathomable encounter. It is decided to form Canary One, a team of elite experts from different nations who are sent down into the strange aperture. Their mission is to conduct research, explore, and discover where these otherworldly beasts came from.

This week we’re so excited to chat with Matt Lowery about his new Kickstarter: ThoughtScape Comics #1. ThoughtScape Comics is an anthology series serving up sci-fi action, thrills, and chills in the tradition of 2000 AD, Black Mirror, and The Twilight Zone.

Anything is possible in these taut tales of trauma and transformation, of people pushed past their limits by the gods and monsters they meet—or become—at the edges of reality.

Each issue will run approximately 44 pages and feature both serialized and self-contained stories written by Matt Mair Lowery (Dark Horse Comics’ Lifeformed), and drawn by some of the most compelling artists in indie comics today. Each issue will also have a killer cover from one of Matt’s favorite artists. And gorgeous graphic design/packaging from multimedia artist John Larsen. The series is planned to run eight or more issues (with a Kickstarter for each issue), so make sure you’re following Matt all over the Internet and on Kickstarter!

This week we’re very excited to chat with Sean Chappell about his upcoming Kickstarter game: HIVERNATION.

HIVERNATION is a 2 player abstract strategy game based on the behavior of bees who, just before winter, kick out all the Drone bees so that the majority of the hive can survive the winter and emerge strong in the spring. (Harsh, but true!)

In the game, each player gets a stack of 20 double-sided bee tiles (Workers on one side, Drones on the other) and 3 specialty tiles chosen at random. (For hardcore strategists, each player receives the same kind of specialty tiles.) The Queen Zizi tile goes in the center of the play space and players take turns laying tiles beside her, building the hive. Players continue playing tiles beside Queen Zizi or their own bee tiles until the two sides meet. Once they do, players can start converting their opponents tiles to their own by sandwiching their opponents tiles between their own and flipping over those caught in the middle. Also, players can use their specialty tiles to change game play by either flipping tiles in a ring, preventing tiles from being flipped or removing them from the game all together.

Ultimately, the player with the most tiles face up is the winner. Will it be Drones or Workers? There's only one way to find out, and that’s by backing the HIVERNATION Kickstarter on April 13.

If you’re looking for a fast-paced challenge, this game is not for you. If you’re looking for a calm distraction where you can casually redecorate your home and pick up sea shells, Animal Crossing: New Horizons may be your new favorite thing.

This is a strange time to celebrate things, but it also feels important to take a moment to acknowledge good and exciting moments as they happen.

Liz and I are so thankful for every single person who has allowed The Sartorial Geek to be what it is. This is a community that we’re proud of, that we learn from, and that genuinely supports each other (and us). Thank you.

So without further ado, here are some of the things we’re most proud that have happened over the past 100 episodes:

1. Our seasonal fashion challenge. Thank you, Alice and Nina, for being the best co-hosts on the planet for the #SgFashionFix challenge. It’s happening right now, and it happens every season, and it’s genuinely the most positive fashion challenge either of us have ever seen. It’s a great way to make friends and a great excuse to put together the geekiest OOTDs. Plus you can win prizes!

2. Our magazine. How is this even possible? We’re about to release Issue 010 of The Sartorial Geek magazine, and like… how? How does it look so good, how are there so many incredible articles, how have we gotten to interview so many cool people? Well, the answer is we’re lucky enough to work with truly wonderful humans. Shout out to Studio Bueno for being the greatest designers and to all of our writers and artists and interviewees and readers.

3. Our Discord. If you haven’t joined yet, you should! It’s free! This online hang is super new, and it’s already one of my favorite places on the internet. AND we even have a monthly book club thanks to Kristin/SuperSpaceChick!

4. Our Patreon. This is the engine that keeps SG going. It’s 99% of the funding that we receive to pay for the print magazine, pay some of our staff writers (which we’d love to increase), pay for our podcast hosting and editing, and maybe someday pay ourselves. We hope we’re bringing value to all of you as you support us. If you’d like to join the party, please please do.

And then to finish off the celebration, we took a page from the My Favorite Murder ladies and ended with some personal “Fucking Hoorays.”

If you buy a coat with tails, there may be a thread in the shape of an “X” keeping them together. That thread is not supposed to be there! I’ve been fortunate enough to rarely have to leave my house during this pandemic, which means I’ve been able to dress basically however I want. Because you all know how I feel about fashion, I honestly expected this to be the season of sweatpants and old tees. While I’ve definitely had my fair share of days I just don’t care about getting dressed (as I type this in lounge pants and a comfy t-shirt), I have learned something new in this time of honestly being able to wear whatever I want.

I actually kind of like putting thought into what I wear. And it takes a lot less time and energy than I tell myself it does.

Putting in earrings takes 5 seconds. Tossing on a necklace takes 5 seconds. Wearing a skirt or dress instead of sweats doesn’t actually take any extra time, most of the time. And I tend to feel a lot better all day if I do.

Thanks to you, our spring fashion challenge was a wild success. You all looked amazing, and I haven’t crunched the final numbers, but I’m pretty sure more people entered than ever before. We’re working to get all of your photos up on the site and get all of your prizes out in the mail.

We had so much fun this time and heard from so many of you that it was a welcome distraction, that we decided to keep a smaller version of this challenge going year-round! We’ll post a weekly prompt on Instagram and in our new Discord. Enter as often or as randomly as you like. This week’s episode features maybe the most fangirl smiling (from me) yet. I am so pleased to introduce you to Kerry Frances, fangirl and actor in Rian Johnson’s Knives Out.

So, I freaking loved Knives out. It truly felt like it was made just for me: a whodunnit murder mystery, directed by one of my faves, starring Chris Evans. If you took everything that holds a special place in my heart and carefully placed it in one film, this is what you would get. When I realized that I know someone who was in the movie, I lost my dang mind.

Kerry and I met somehow on the wild world of the Internet, probably through an online business class we both took. Hearing Kerry’s story of how she got started, her first acting/theater roles, and Knives Out being her first movie is so inspiring and wonderful.

PLUS she shares some fun stories of how magical it was to be on set with this incredible cast (including a lovely moment with Disney-loving Cap) and how welcoming and supportive everyone was to a newcomer.

We’re so excited to introduce you to real life magical lady Kitty Yeung.

Kitty Yeung is a physicist, artist, maker, fashion designer and musician based in Silicon Valley, California. While working on quantum computing in her day job, Kitty is passionate about integrating technology, science, design and art. Her fashion brand, Art by Physicist (shop.kittyyeung.com) creates unique and timeless science- and nature-themed clothing and accessories. Using her paintings printed on fabrics through eco-friendly processes and 3D printing on-demand production to achieve sustainable and STEAM fashion.

Kitty's early career had been conducting research in condensed matter physics while pursuing artistic endeavors through painting, music and graphic novel creations. She received her Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Harvard University (thesis: Engineering Plasmonic Circuits in 2-Dimensional Electron Systems) and a M.Sci., B.A. and M.A. in Natural Sciences from University of Cambridge. After grad school, Kitty worked as a research scientist, hardware engineer and user experience designer at Intel, and Manager of the Microsoft Garage program in Silicon Valley. She now works at Microsoft Quantum Systems on quantum computing education.

• Hit 10k followers on Instagram.
• Hit a very exciting Patreon goal that let us hire paid staff for sartorialgeek.com.
• Created The Sartorial Geek Boutique.
• Put on our first fashion panel at NYCC.

Holy hell, that is a lot. And we’re not planning to slow down for 2020…

• We’re working on a geeky resource guide! It’s slowly growing, and we would love to add your suggestions as you have them.
• We’d love to hire more staff writers for The Sartorial Geek as our Patreon grows.
• Speaking of Patreon, we added two wild new goals that we’re beyond excited about. One is that we’d love to release a special Sartorial Geek publication that only features our lovely Patrons! And the big, big goal is to have everyone who works on SG get paid. What a dream.
• We’re also revamping our Patreon rewards! If you’ve checked it out in the past and didn’t see anything you loved, check again.
• And finally, we’re hoping to have everything run more smoothly. We’re two years in, and we’ve learned a lot and set up a lot behind the scenes and hopefully will be able to enjoy a little bit of that hard work pay off this year.

Okay Sci-Fi fans, this episode is for you.

I am so excited to introduce you to Dr. Erin Macdonald: an astrophysicist, science fiction consultant, aerospace engineer, and host of the online series "Dr Erin Explains the Universe". Her specialty is in general relativity, having previously worked in the LIGO Scientific Collaboration searching for gravitational waves. She has since found her home in science fiction, consulting with writers, teaching STEM through popular culture, and fulfilling her life goal of becoming a warp drive expert.

It was such a treat to talk to Dr. Erin about the journey her career has taken, how she uses her nerdy interests and science knowledge to impact the future of Sci-Fi, and the way she’s making science accessible (with things like her new Audible Original The Science of Sci-Fi, which I downloaded immediately after this recording and learned so so much).

When you’re getting ready for any comic con, make sure to leave space in your bag! Artist alley and the exhibitor hall are amazing, and as you walk the show floor you’ll likely end up picking up a few things. If you’re carrying a backpack, leave a little extra space or put an extra tote or two in there. If you’re planning to buy art or get celebrity photos, you can bring a folder or hard case to carry them around in. If you’re traveling with suitcases, don’t pack them to the edge of your weight limit so you have space to get new goodies home.

Pack at least two pairs of shoes! Packing for cons is hard, fitting everything you need into your luggage is a struggle, but this is one thing you will never regret. Bringing at least one pair of backup shoes, and planning your outfits so that you don’t have to wear the same shoes two days in a row, is my number one convention tip.

This year we were so excited to chat with one of our favorite humans, the lovely Sam Maggs.

If you don’t know Sam from her best-selling books like The Fangirl’s Guide to the Galaxy and Wonder Women, or her videos on Nerdist, or her work with video games, or her Fangirl Galaxy collection with Jordandené, you may know her from her new job writing Captain Freaking Marvel! And a few other super cool characters. Sam has a lot up her sleeve, and it’s all very exciting!
